Apparently Karl Urban was so good at playing Bones that it made Leonard Nimoy tear up because it reminded him of his friend DeForest Kelley who originally played Bones.
Rest in peace Anton Yelchin, who plays Checkov in this movie. He was an upcoming movie star and was taken far too early. :( I miss his version of Chekov, I'd loved to have seen more of it.
Just after I saw this film, I started watching the tv show Criminal Minds on cable, and Anton was the guest star in a season two episode. My first reaction was, “Hey, it’s Chekov!” He was fantastic as a high school kid who is exhibiting potential serial killer tendencies.
Oh, and he has one of my favorite line readings in this film, when he beams Sulu and Kirk from their free fall and yells a Russian swear in celebration. Apparently, it always got a huge response when the movie was shown in Russia.
RIP Leonard Nimoy, a legend of the genre of science fiction. He's a good example of when an actor goes from dreading being associated with just one character to appreciating the fandom's strong response and praise. Where would the world be without Spock?
Shatner came around eventually too. Seems a lot of these folks mellow and come to terms with this stuff later in life. I absolutely love how Mark Hamill is revered today when in the eighties and early nineties he was written off as not having any talent.
@@deadmeat1240 I get it, when you're in the prime of your career you're going to dread being type-cast and losing opportunities as a result, that's a sane response to the situation. You wouldn't go far in the industry if you were happy just to play one popular character and call it quits. But as you reach your older years and the past is what it is, I think a lot of actors find a great deal of comfort and happiness knowing how much their main "big" character influenced lives and generations.
@@deadmeat1240 - not true in a way, as Mark Hamill has been doing voice overs since the late 1970, and he became actually quite good at it. So in a way his interests were also connected with voice acting in a way, a bit before something like Star Wars. Hence for some people he may have been some guy without any talent or connected only with Star Wars, but the guy always knew what he was doing - and was simply pursuing his interests, not caring what other people are (or has been) saying. Leonard Nimoy is the guy who played future/older Spock. He's also the original actor from the original show. When he showed up in this movie, it was so awesome. Also Zachary Quinto (young Spock) absolutely killed it. The whole cast was spot on. Hoping you do Into Darkness soon. Favorite quote: "Your father was Captain of the starship for twelve minutes. He saved eight hundred lives. I dare you to do better."
The third guy on the skydiving team that died instantly is a callback to the original series, where a red-shirt crew member (usually with little or no dialogue) was always the first to die. After the original Trek series, the term "red shirt" became a popular term for bit-part characters on the side of the protagonist who die early in a film or show. They are basically the good-guy equivalent of storm troopers.
For me the original series films are superior stories to these reboots though I do enjoy this first one (and a few of the older films are not great). I’d actually say the earlier films are less burdened by continuity than this film due to the timeline weirdness.
@@shallowgal462 It would probably be a worthwhile effort to compile a list of necessary episodes and viewing order for films to provide new viewers with the best experience. I think they did something like that for the Star Wars shows (Clone Wars arcs, etc.) so there should be something like that for ST. For all I know, it might already exist.
Is SpaceX this timeline`s version of The Federation ? SpaceX stands for Space Exploration.... i`m reckoning SpaceX Star Ships could be repurposed to build a ship like NCC-1701 in orbit and other technologies catch up...

SpaceEx would be a bit more akin to Starfleet, the military and scientific branch of the Federation, or even the Utopia Planetia shipyards (where they build the starships). The federation is something far more vast and complex. The United Federation of Planets is the Union of hundreds of planets all focusing on the ideas of peaceful coexistence and discovery. Planets like Earth and Vulcan were of the first to form the Federation and many more planets followed suit as the years decades and even centuries passed. Captain Benjamin Sisko put it best: “We are explorers. We explore our lives day by day, and we explore the Galaxy expanding the boundaries of our knowledge.”
I'm just realizing that the destruction of Romulus was more tragic than just Spock's failure. Admiral Picard was simultaneously trying to organize an evacuation with thousands of ships until Mars was destroyed.
the timeline "Old Spock" is from is the original shows and movies. i like how JJ Abrams managed to reboot the franchise while keeping the original storyline in a position of importance, because without all the events of that series we wouldn't have "Old Spock" helping kirk and spock work things out in the new timeline.
One of the smartest "reboot" concepts i've seen. The original series etc is still all canon and this isnt a prequel or a rehash it's an alternate timeline
As a classic Trek fan, I loved this fresh pass when it came out. And yes, it’s great entry level for the classic stuff. The classic Trek movies are pretty good, especially 2, 3, 4 and 6. I would suggest checking them out and the original 60s series. Perhaps a bit dated, but it’s still entertaining. Whatever choice made going forward, I’m thrilled you started.

There's none of the principles, philosophy, concept of the improvement of human kind. And what is especially bad is COMPLETELY ignoring canon. For instance, you CANNOT beam to a ship at warp at that distance away. It is established in every series and movie. They are not true to the established story. They are nearly Trek in name only.

This has more lens flares than the number of brain cells it took to come up with this.. Here's some of my issues with JJ Trek. What does the villain do in the intervening years between their arrival and that of future Spock? Hide out and play a couple of million rounds of cards?? 🤣 Also why is his mining ship the dumbest and most impractical design imaginable? Because it looks cool? 🙄😳 Kirk, not even made it through the academy and made first officer ( Yeah there captain's prerogative and all that, But seriously? ) The team sent to destroy the drill. Why was the biggest idiot ( The one who gets them selves killed ), The one entrusted with ALL the demo charges?? Surely they all would be carrying some? 😂 Talk about jeopardizing the mission and indeed the entire planets population 😳. And at the end, Kirk says to the extraordinarily dumb villain, That there's no way for him to escape destruction by the black hole that's been created and that the enterprise is offering to rescue his crew. When the villain declines the offer, Why does Kirk feel the need for the enterprise to stay so to close to fire the torpedoes??, Getting the ship so nearly ripped apart and having to eject the warp core in a hail mary attempt blast the ship to safety, Captain Kirk hero of the day? Ha, More like Captain Burk who nearly got everyone killed 😲🤤😖.. To me it's a sad way for Star Trek to end up, Swapping substance for explosions and lens flares 😯😖
"It's gonna take out the bridge isn't it?" My wife makes the same comment any time a movie shows San Francisco. They always trash the bridge. She was pleasantly surprised here too. Star Trek is one of the OG science fiction properties. It's had some rough patches, but overall it's an amazingly well done series of shows and movies. All a lot of fun, even when not at their best. It's a different sort of vision of the future. For the most part the peoples of the galaxy have agreed to more or less just live in peace. There's still bad people out there and things happen, but overall people are doing pretty good. For the most part people have enough and plenty and just live their lives. Highly recomment all of Star Trek. The friendships and bonds that grow between the original crew are something special among all of television and film history. They showed us a better future and a better humanity. And it has been very hard over the years to see them leave us for other adventures. Each new crew has been the same. And the ship... like family as well. The Enterprise has one hell of a history. The first Space Shuttle was named Enterprise in honor of this show. The Navy named an aircraft carrier Enterprise, again for this show. The name has taken on a meaning and suggestion of exploration and aid and protection all of its own. And it's one hell of a cool looking ship. In all of its many forms and iterations as it got destroyed, rebuilt, upgraded, etc over the decades. Pike would have died eventually. They were trying to get him to give up the codes and frequencies for Star Fleet defenses and ship communications. Which he would refuse until he died or as long as he was able to.
I was probably in the perfect position when I first watched this. I'd seen some episodes of the original series, so I was already familiar with Kirk and Spock's friendship and Vulcan's philosophy on logic vs. emotion. But I hadn't seen any of the older movies yet, which I'd agree aren't the best intro to the franchise. Fun fact, the "Space: The final frontier...where no one has gone before" speech at the end, goes way back to the original series. But it was originally "where no (hu)man has gone before." I like that this movie changed "no man" to "no one" because now it applies to aliens like Vulcans and Romulans, which makes more sense in the story.
Yay! This "sideways" reboot was a wonderful treat for those of us who grew up with the original cast. There's two more in this revived series, and of course a billion hours of other Trek for you to watch. I liked the "parallel timeline" introduced by this film, it freed the writers from having to strictly follow the original series' continuity (from the 1960s, and the later films of the 70s, 80s and 90s), although there are little nods here and there to events in the original Trek timeline. The young cast killed it, for the most part. I think my favorite was Karl Urban as the crusty Dr "Bones" McCoy, very much of a piece with the role as originated by the late DeForest Kelley.
This is by far one my most favourite quotes of any sci fi show or film: 'Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before!' It's makes me tear up thinking about all the adventures the different iterations of Enterprise has had, in dealing new aliens, foreign powers, new planets and solar systems. And what the Enterprise and the Federation stand for. I'd highly recommend to watch the earlier films, as you don't need much of a introduction and background info now you've come to familiarise yourself with the main body of the crew. One thing I will mention is that there isn't as much action in the other OG films as in this film, but it is much more philosophical and makes you think more.
Can you even imagine starting down this wormhole in 2023? So many of Addie's comments made me laugh, having seen everything from the original season 1. Great reaction, welcome to this culture changing series!
I really like the new Star Trek movies. The cool thing to me is how the new cast played their characters to mirror the originals. Speech patterns, movements, and a lot of characteristics. It made it so much fun.
I’m not sure if anyone said this in any of the other comments but Romulans and Vulcans share the same ancestry that’s why they look so much alike in both appearance and their shared green blood. They evolved quite differently though and both societies are polar opposites… in the TV show from 2001 called Star Trek Enterprise it actually is a prequel to the Original Series where they show how the Federation would become what it was in the Original series..which was really fascinating and really well done in my opinion. Vulcans were the ones to help humanity develop their warp technology further..but relations between the two species were very tense for at least 50-100 years before the Federation was born. On Vulcan, humans are seen as weak and volatile because they have not learned to control their emotions so that’s why Spock’s mother was treated and seen poorly in Vulcan society!

You said several times that the Enterprise looked bigger than you expected. That’s funny because the Enterprise in this movie is larger than the Enterprise seen in the Original Series and the Original movies. It was a side effect of the Kelvin’s destruction at the hands of Nero. Starfleet determined that because of the great and unknown threats that might lurk in the galaxy they should be better prepared and began building ships larger and meaner than was done before. From the destruction of the Kelvin onwards, that timeline/alternate reality is known as the Kelvin timeline.
Other franchises would've simply made a remake of the original story, creating an alternative version of it without saying anything about that. But for star trek, where everything needs to be logical, they of course made this version with a time travel event, giving us actually a reasonable explanation why there are two different timelimes now. This is what I always appreciated about star trek.
36:01 Fun fact: Leonard Nimoy was given the final say during casting for Spock in the new timeline movie, and he personally selected Zachary Quinto to carry the mantle forward. Since Nimoy's death, his estate, while not officially holding that specific power, was consulted for the casting of Spock during Star Trek: Discovery/Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to once again ensure that the original portrayal is respected while also trying out new things with new Spocks.
Almost 15 years on and two things are still as vivid as when I first saw this in cinemas: 1) Nimoy's closing narration hits all of the feels. All of them. Probably my second favourite version of that after Undiscovered Country. 2) I know this design has its fans but every *single* time I see the Abrams Enterprise I can't help but shudder. Doesn't come close to the movie Constitution class and it's such a shame as the potential's clearly there. Just goes a bit... weird from the neck back. Film itself still holds up pretty well. Nero gets short changed but with so much world building going on that's not surprising. Core cast is really solid with the main trinity in particular being superb shouts.
Glad you enjoyed. I would definitely recommend the movies starring the original cast from the series. They're great stories and that should be just enough for you to sense the sentimentality this movie meant to convey. This movie represents the beginning some old friendships, on the screen and in real-life.
The only thing about going with these first is you are hit with a lot of stuff that's contextual to the original. Like Bones declaring he likes Spock (they have a very contentious relationship because Spock is all logic, McCoy emotion), knowing exactly what's coming with the Kobayashi Maru, Admiral Archers beagle, Sulu saying his combat training is in fencing, Chekov struggling to make a V sound, etc. They obviously didn't diminish your enjoyment of the movie, they didn't want people to need to know the property to watch this one. Just that there's a lot of small details and nods thrown in there that flesh it out that much more. The good news is that it will also work the other way around to a degree.
Love to see you getting into the Star Trek world. Honestly I watched the original movies before I saw the original series and I followed just fine. Really hope we get to see you react to the originals eventually. II, IV, and VI are incredible!

The best way to dive in if not by watching the original series would be to watch the first movies based on the original series, these are... kind of fun but certainly not reflecting the way as more mature characters would behave.
This movie has one of the most intense opening sequences ever, IMO. I absolutely love it. Great reaction, Addie! I hope you are planning to watch the other two movies in this timeline too!

My uncles loved Star Trek which meant that as a kid I grew up with Star Trek. The Wrath of Khan, Generations, The Undiscovered Country, Into Darkness and First Contact being my favorites!
I grew up with the original series and original movies. I enjoyed these right from the start! I'm sure you're going to be told about Bones McCoy and how you've seen him before. I cannot wait for that reaction!! Take care, Addie!

In a way, this kind of prepares you for doing so, since the characters are older and at a different stage in their lives in the old movies. It might also interest you to know that the original movies and TV series all take place in the timeline Old Spock came from--the one where Kirk did know his father and had quite a different life.
Btw... Future Spock .. the actors name is Lenard Nimoy..he played Spock in the 1960's TV series and the 6 original Star Trek Motion pictures, which ran mostly in the 1980s
I’ve been a Star Trek fan almost all my life. Congratulations for venturing in. Some backstory is different from the series, but this movie carries some callbacks to it. The flavor is the same. Nice introduction to the characters and their relationships.
So the specs for the original series Enterprise are as follows Length: 288.6 meters Width: 127.1 meters Height: 72.6 meters Mass: 190,000 metric tons As well as 23 decks and a crew of 430. the specs for the Enterprise of this movie are different the length is 762 meters the width is 335.28 meters the height is 190.5 meters the mass is 4,950,000 36 decks crew of 1,100 people so comes to show how much bigger the ship is compared to the original Enterprise. ( i know all of this because i grew up watching star trek)

Some comments while I'm still watching the video: - the Kobayashi Maru is famous in Star Trek lore, although it changed through the years/series exactly because of Jim Kirk. He was the first to survive the test because he hacked it, since he doesn't believe in no-win scenarios. - there are some traditions in the franchise, and this one is specially true for The Original Series (and the Kelvin Timeline): you wear a red shirt, your life expectancy will be very, very short. 😅 - where do I sign for Addie doing a Star Trek cosplay with the The Original Series costumes? 😉 Live Long And Prosper! 🖖
Okay, you just got a new sub. :) As a person who has loved Star Trek all his life, I can empathize with you - it is not the most accessible franchise to dig into. They really did a great job in this movie of making Trek accessible to a complete Trek neophyte but at the same time giving us trekkies so much good stuff to sink our teeth into again. Welcome to what trekkies call the Kelvin (from the USS Kelvin that got destroyed in the beginning) Timeline. This was intended as a reboot of the franchise. I recommend, like others, once you get done with the Kelvin Timeline movies Into Darkness and Beyond (which I am assuming you will do) that you go back and hit the original movies starting with The Motion Picture from '79. Some of the movies are kind of difficult to get through, especially with our current perspectives, but over 70% of the content in those movies as a whole is so, so good. Who knows, you may even start watching a series here and there. Be careful of the world you are stepping into. It's a magical place, but many have become entrapped by the franchise. :) It's a fun ride. This was such a great reaction, it was fun to watch the movie through your eyes.
As a fan of the original Star Trek tv series, this movie blew me away. The casting of all the main characters was spot on, completely building off their 60's counterparts. It was especially a huge surprise to see Leonard Nimoy reprise the character he was so well known for.
I LOVE Star Trek in all its forms so it's great to see you getting into it. I'd say go for the TOS movies first, just keep in mind that The Motion Picture is... not well regarded. But Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, Voyage Home, and Undiscovered Country form a self contained story arc that is most excellent.
Yeah I think this was a good place to start, but jumping directly to Wrath Of Khan would be a good next step, then maybe alternating new ones & old ones. Khan is the only one that later films refer back to in an important way.
How refreshing! To see someone react to a Star Trek movie without all of the baggage of decades of Star Trek knowledge. You didn't know what a Vulcan was or how they behaved and got to discover it first hand.
For the original movies, while it is nice to have a background from the TV show so that you already know the main characters, it's not necessary. Only the 2nd movie follows directly from one of the episodes. Even then, they do a reasonable job of providing the backstory within the movie.
A little tale to the party, but wanted to share a quick bit of trivia about one of the actors. At the very beginning of the film there is an extra in a brown uniform who says the line "Captian we have visual", his name is Randy Pausch, he was a University Professor and lifelong Star Trek fan who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is the coauthor of the book The Last Lecture which is a written account of the final Lecture he gave at the university before his death. The video is available online if you would like to see it, he was a remarkable man and seeing him at the beginning of the movie always chokes me up.
Nice you enjoyed it. I wish you could feel the emotional impact the long time fans had seeing old Spock again and also experiencing the relationships between the crew members at their starting point after having this long history of a 79 Episodes TV show, 6 full length movies and several cameos in many other star trek content. The emotional bond to these characters is strong and even if some fans consider these "reboot/alternate timeline movies" not as good as the originals, they really nailed the recreation of the characters i think. And i think you can watch the older movies without having the knowledge of the TV show, but keep in mind the pacing is much, much slower compared to this "reboot" and the effects are totally outdated. Especially true for the first motion picture. It is more about going on to this journey with the beloved characters than watching an epic blockbuster with amazing fx.
I recall that Uhura's roommate with whom Kirk has a liaison, is played by a relative of Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura in the original series and its follow-up movies.
I was really happy with this movie (still am actually). As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I felt they were gentle enough with the canon to include this story and the ones that follow. Respect to Leonard Nemoy and Anton Yelchin. They can never be replaced.
My first experience with Trek was the fourth film The Voyage Home. With no prior knowledge of Trek I followed the plot without issue and encouraged me to check out the other original films and The Next Generation TV series which was airing for the first time in the UK. Loved Star Trek ever since. I can imagine it's daunting to know where to start now with 8 live action shows, 13 films & 3 animated series. Trek 09 is ok, brilliant cast & design but forgets the ideals of Trek & trys to more action packed like Star Wars.
I grew up watching the original Star Trek series when it aired and then watching it again over endless reruns. My dad took me to hear Leonard Nimoy speak in my hometown of Orlando, FL. when I was about 12 years old. I followed the movies and the TNG rebirth and all of the ancillary series. Star Trek was so ahead of its time and still is. I hope you dig deeper.
Addie, great reaction, so glad you started with this movie. It’s a great origin story for the characters, which you really don’t get from the originals series, and all the actors do a fantastic job portraying them. Also, the writers finding a way to create a reboot while using time travel to keep it in the same universe as the original was amazing. My recommendation form here is to find a list of important episodes from the original series. There are several lists out there that tell you which episodes contain origin stories and stories that come into play for the later films. You can probably catch all the important storylines in about a dozen episodes. Then you can move on to the original cast films. I think most of them are much better than the sequels to this film, this first one was by far the best. So happy you’re getting into Star Trek, I hope you enjoy it however you choose to proceed!
Each and every one of the main characters: Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov were well known and beloved by the fanbase. Just imagine what it was like for them when this movie came out. I was fanboying :)
I grew up on the TV series. You were right in watching this movie first. The original theatrical releases were heavy on having a history from the series. They did a great job on these movies, my mom would have loved them.
Hi Addy, I'm super glad that you decided to dive into one of the most beloved science-fiction universes of all time! In my opinion the greatest science-fiction franchise ever made! The three latest reboot movies, starting with this one, are great fun for sure, but most of the other Star Trek properties, beginning with TOS (The Original Series) from 1966, are more noted for their story lines dealing with the social commentaries of their time, but also tackling large philosophical topics and ideas, that humanity has been asking since we first looked up towards the stars, concepts like are we alone in the universe, what do we do when we encounter new alien life, how do we deal with artificial intelligence, as well as genetic engineering, what constitutes sentient intelligence, what do we consider as a life form, how responsible are we when great power is thrust onto us, where do we draw the line if at all with the development of new technology. These are just some of the questions Star Trek has tackled over the years, and if you're going down that rabbit, I'll be there for the journey!
We have lost two important Star Trak actors and we will remember them for their telling us the story. The film was fun and extraordinary story, I enjoy watching this movie 🎦
I'm an old fashioned Trekker. I watched Kirk in reruns and every new Trek since 1987 when I was 7. It's not boring, but can be slow and tedious. Humor can be a bit nuanced and nerdy. Deep Space Nine has really brilliant writing and acting, but still very nerdy because it has a very long storyline going through all 7 years instead of being episodic like most of the other Treks. When this came out in 2009, I will admit it was refreshing and exciting. Just a new take on an old story. I loved it. Music, effects, the action. The 2 sequels after it, were overly ambitious and worsened in each iteration. If anyone listens to the directors commentary for this movie, every damn scene is JJ Abrams favorite scene. He tells you so. Blech!
DS9 is still my all-time favorite, followed closely now by Lower Decks. I smoke weed and I have an artist brain, so i could never see myself on a starship, but I'd absolutely open up an art shop on the Promenade, and make an arms-length friendship with Quark. Maybe permanently rent out one of his holosuites and retrofit it for my novels. Quark would probably know the corners of the station i can toke in and not set off an alarm. And smuggle in cannabis, in general. 🤣🤣 But Lower Decks fricken SPEAKS TO ME, though. Like, i can absolutely see myself on that damn ship. 🤣🤣
I saw the DVD commentary for this movie and all Director JJ Abrams talked about was Star Wars. There's a lot of homages in this movie to Star Wars. In which case, JJ Abrams later directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Rise Of Skywalker.
I have to say something about this. I know you said you weren't familiar with the Star Trek series from 1966 (from which each of these characters originated). Scotty's line "I'm giving her all she got!" is iconic. Its one of the great Montgomery Scott lines from the original series, as "I am a doctor, not a physicist." is one of McCoy's iconic line (he'd say, "I'm a doctor, not a...." often when called upon to do things outside his area of expertise). Its one of the reasons old hand fans like myself loved this reboot. Also, the music during the end credits, begins with "To Boldly Go", the theme song of the original series from 1966. It was enough geek love to bring really hardcore fans to tears.
well, these movies do rely on the older movies, so....if you don't know the order of something, going chronological is always the best way to go. (JFYI: The "old" spock was played by leonard nimoy, who played spock in the old films and the 60s tv series. The original Spock). The mentioned Beagle from captain archer can be experienced in the series "enterprise" (from about 2001 which plays before the original series (TOS)
The notion of a hyper-emotional people with a nearly fanatical religion based around logic and detachment (which led to slight, psychic abilities) was groundbreaking Sci-fi when this series premiered in the '60's. And you can see the idea is still intriguing and a great literary device for plot complications.
'One' of the older films is based on 'one' of the episodes of the original series, but I dont think most people had any memory of it at the time, just the general vibe.
This was actually Chris Hemsworth's first American role; before this, he'd only worked in his native Australia and done guest roles on TV and a long-running role on a soap. He was going to return for the fourth movie in this Star Trek series, but then both he and Chris Pine dropped out, and that movie has apparently been cancelled.
Ideally you end up watching some of the older stuff and then come back to this movie where another layer of humour makes the experience even better. it's the little things that can make you chuckle. Like when McCoy reacts to the first meeting of Spock at the trial with "I like him!!" Once you see enough of the older stuff you'll get the humour of that line. The Blue girl, the weird alien monster battle, the foolish over cocky paraglider dude, there are so many tips of the hat to the original series. Enjoy the journey back.
My dad took me to the Star Trek movies when I was a kid although I never watched the show - I loved all of them and followed them into adulthood. You can absolutely enjoy the movies without watching the series. However I will say it's really cool to see a reaction from someone who is absolutely innocent of all Star Trek lore.
Hey Addie, as an old-time Trek fan (as a little kid, I watched the original series during its original airing on tv) you did a good job on this reaction! Without having any emotional attachment to the old shows some of the key moments in this movie likely didn't have the same impact on you as it did a lot of us, but you definitely caught on to the spirit of the whole Trek universe. At some point it would be worth your while to watch a handful of old episodes to get a sense of what those are like, but watching the whole series would take too long. Maybe it would be worth watching a few Trek reaction channel videos here on RUclips? The guys at Target Audience have just finished up season 2 of the original series, and they've been having a lot of fun discovering why Star Trek has such a devoted fan base.
I grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation when I was in high school and college and I have seen all of the original series plus a couple original movies. I think this trilogy did a really good job and I love them.
If you're interested in watching some really great episodes from the original series and its successors, just to learn what Star Trek is really about, let us know. I'm sure people are already compiling lists in their heads.
I enjoyed your reaction. The original series ran for 3 years 1966-69 then was cancelled. But after the moon landing, the public became interested in space travel so the series started rerunning in the 1970s. When NASA announced its space shuttle program; they were overrun with letters from across the U.S. naming what the 1st shuttle should be called - Enterprise.
As far as the older movies go it's really only The Wrath of Khan (the second movie) that requires some prior knowledge, but then it actually doesn't require any more knowledge than the sequel to this movie (Star Trek Into Darkness) requires, in fact this sequel makes references back to Wrath of Khan which you won't get without having seen that movie. I assure you that, even taking Wrath of Khan into consideration, you could watch those original 5 movies without any prior knowledge of the tv series and without much fear of getting too lost in what's happening. In saying that I also don't think this movie is a bad way to dip your toe into the Trek universe.
This trilogy is a great entry point, that's how I did it: I grew up a star wars kid, and never really watched trek until these came out, and it compelled me to check out everything else! Now I've seen it all except for the first motion picture; star trek has some ups and downs but the ups are incredible and worth it!
I hope you do make it to The Motion Picture, it's slow and cerebral, but beautifully shot and well directed. It was my introduction to Trek (when it was in first run: I was 10).
Fun fact about Captain Pike - he was Kirk's mentor in TOS, but wasn't seen except the pilot. We never got more of him until Discovery Season 2 and Strange New Worlds... but he is absolutely KILLING it there!
@@Caseytify I'm gonna disagree about Discovery. Season 1, in particular, is a brilliant subversion of Hard Man Military Sci-Fi with the moral that morality isn't a luxury to be sacrificed in war. The rest isn't bad either.

Glad you took on this movie. Most O.G. Star Wars fans were Star Trek fans beforehand. It's an equally deep rabbit hole that I think you'd enjoy. Give the O.G. series a look (on your own time,....? although Star Trek would offer a LOT of content for your channel). So many storylines to follow, there's no WAY you'd get bored. Why do I get the feeling you'd absolutely nail the "original series" uniform......Tricorder and all. I see you as a science officer (in the blue uniforms). Great vid as usual!
Apparently Karl Urban was so good at playing Bones that it made Leonard Nimoy tear up because it reminded him of his friend DeForest Kelley who originally played Bones.
Rest in peace Anton Yelchin, who plays Checkov in this movie. He was an upcoming movie star and was taken far too early. :( I miss his version of Chekov, I'd loved to have seen more of it.

I was sad the second I saw him. Such a loss, he seemed like a cool guy. He was fantastic in Green Room with Patrick Stewart.
Just after I saw this film, I started watching the tv show Criminal Minds on cable, and Anton was the guest star in a season two episode. My first reaction was, “Hey, it’s Chekov!” He was fantastic as a high school kid who is exhibiting potential serial killer tendencies.
Oh, and he has one of my favorite line readings in this film, when he beams Sulu and Kirk from their free fall and yells a Russian swear in celebration. Apparently, it always got a huge response when the movie was shown in Russia.

RIP Leonard Nimoy, a legend of the genre of science fiction. He's a good example of when an actor goes from dreading being associated with just one character to appreciating the fandom's strong response and praise. Where would the world be without Spock?
Shatner came around eventually too. Seems a lot of these folks mellow and come to terms with this stuff later in life. I absolutely love how Mark Hamill is revered today when in the eighties and early nineties he was written off as not having any talent.
@@deadmeat1240 I get it, when you're in the prime of your career you're going to dread being type-cast and losing opportunities as a result, that's a sane response to the situation. You wouldn't go far in the industry if you were happy just to play one popular character and call it quits. But as you reach your older years and the past is what it is, I think a lot of actors find a great deal of comfort and happiness knowing how much their main "big" character influenced lives and generations.
@@deadmeat1240 - not true in a way, as Mark Hamill has been doing voice overs since the late 1970, and he became actually quite good at it. So in a way his interests were also connected with voice acting in a way, a bit before something like Star Wars.
Hence for some people he may have been some guy without any talent or connected only with Star Wars, but the guy always knew what he was doing - and was simply pursuing his interests, not caring what other people are (or has been) saying. And good for him.

Leonard Nimoy is the guy who played future/older Spock. He's also the original actor from the original show. When he showed up in this movie, it was so awesome. Also Zachary Quinto (young Spock) absolutely killed it. The whole cast was spot on. Hoping you do Into Darkness soon.

The third guy on the skydiving team that died instantly is a callback to the original series, where a red-shirt crew member (usually with little or no dialogue) was always the first to die. After the original Trek series, the term "red shirt" became a popular term for bit-part characters on the side of the protagonist who die early in a film or show. They are basically the good-guy equivalent of storm troopers.
I honestly think the older films are fine to watch without much prior knowledge. You should definitely dip your toe in and see what you think.
In which case, ST:TMP is not where her toes should land, but rather STII.
For me the original series films are superior stories to these reboots though I do enjoy this first one (and a few of the older films are not great). I’d actually say the earlier films are less burdened by continuity than this film due to the timeline weirdness.

Is SpaceX this timeline`s version of The Federation ? SpaceX stands for Space Exploration.... i`m reckoning SpaceX Star Ships could be repurposed to build a ship like NCC-1701 in orbit and other technologies catch up...

SpaceEx would be a bit more akin to Starfleet, the military and scientific branch of the Federation, or even the Utopia Planetia shipyards (where they build the starships). The federation is something far more vast and complex. The United Federation of Planets is the Union of hundreds of planets all focusing on the ideas of peaceful coexistence and discovery. Planets like Earth and Vulcan were of the first to form the Federation and many more planets followed suit as the years decades and even centuries passed. Captain Benjamin Sisko put it best:
“We are explorers. We explore our lives day by day, and we explore the Galaxy expanding the boundaries of our knowledge.”
I'm just realizing that the destruction of Romulus was more tragic than just Spock's failure. Admiral Picard was simultaneously trying to organize an evacuation with thousands of ships until Mars was destroyed.
the timeline "Old Spock" is from is the original shows and movies. i like how JJ Abrams managed to reboot the franchise while keeping the original storyline in a position of importance, because without all the events of that series we wouldn't have "Old Spock" helping kirk and spock work things out in the new timeline.
One of the smartest "reboot" concepts i've seen. The original series etc is still all canon and this isnt a prequel or a rehash it's an alternate timeline

As a classic Trek fan, I loved this fresh pass when it came out. And yes, it’s great entry level for the classic stuff. The classic Trek movies are pretty good, especially 2, 3, 4 and 6. I would suggest checking them out and the original 60s series. Perhaps a bit dated, but it’s still entertaining. Whatever choice made going forward, I’m thrilled you started.

There's none of the principles, philosophy, concept of the improvement of human kind. And what is especially bad is COMPLETELY ignoring canon. For instance, you CANNOT beam to a ship at warp at that distance away. It is established in every series and movie. They are not true to the established story. They are nearly Trek in name only.

What does the villain do in the intervening years between their arrival and that of future Spock? Hide out and play a couple of million rounds of cards?? 🤣 Also why is his mining ship the dumbest and most impractical design imaginable? Because it looks cool? 🙄😳

The team sent to destroy the drill. Why was the biggest idiot ( The one who gets them selves killed ), The one entrusted with ALL the demo charges?? Surely they all would be carrying some? 😂 Talk about jeopardizing the mission and indeed the entire planets population 😳.
And at the end, Kirk says to the extraordinarily dumb villain, That there's no way for him to escape destruction by the black hole that's been created and that the enterprise is offering to rescue his crew. When the villain declines the offer, Why does Kirk feel the need for the enterprise to stay so to close to fire the torpedoes??, Getting the ship so nearly ripped apart and having to eject the warp core in a hail mary attempt blast the ship to safety, Captain Kirk hero of the day? Ha, More like Captain Burk who nearly got everyone killed 😲🤤😖..
To me it's a sad way for Star Trek to end up, Swapping substance for explosions and lens flares 😯😖
"It's gonna take out the bridge isn't it?" My wife makes the same comment any time a movie shows San Francisco. They always trash the bridge. She was pleasantly surprised here too. Star Trek is one of the OG science fiction properties. It's had some rough patches, but overall it's an amazingly well done series of shows and movies. All a lot of fun, even when not at their best. It's a different sort of vision of the future. For the most part the peoples of the galaxy have agreed to more or less just live in peace. There's still bad people out there and things happen, but overall people are doing pretty good. For the most part people have enough and plenty and just live their lives. Highly recomment all of Star Trek. The friendships and bonds that grow between the original crew are something special among all of television and film history. They showed us a better future and a better humanity. And it has been very hard over the years to see them leave us for other adventures. Each new crew has been the same. And the ship... like family as well. The Enterprise has one hell of a history. The first Space Shuttle was named Enterprise in honor of this show. The Navy named an aircraft carrier Enterprise, again for this show. The name has taken on a meaning and suggestion of exploration and aid and protection all of its own. And it's one hell of a cool looking ship. In all of its many forms and iterations as it got destroyed, rebuilt, upgraded, etc over the decades.
Pike would have died eventually. They were trying to get him to give up the codes and frequencies for Star Fleet defenses and ship communications. Which he would refuse until he died or as long as he was able to.
I was probably in the perfect position when I first watched this. I'd seen some episodes of the original series, so I was already familiar with Kirk and Spock's friendship and Vulcan's philosophy on logic vs. emotion. But I hadn't seen any of the older movies yet, which I'd agree aren't the best intro to the franchise.
Fun fact, the "Space: The final frontier...where no one has gone before" speech at the end, goes way back to the original series. But it was originally "where no (hu)man has gone before." I like that this movie changed "no man" to "no one" because now it applies to aliens like Vulcans and Romulans, which makes more sense in the story.
Yay! This "sideways" reboot was a wonderful treat for those of us who grew up with the original cast. There's two more in this revived series, and of course a billion hours of other Trek for you to watch. I liked the "parallel timeline" introduced by this film, it freed the writers from having to strictly follow the original series' continuity (from the 1960s, and the later films of the 70s, 80s and 90s), although there are little nods here and there to events in the original Trek timeline. The young cast killed it, for the most part. I think my favorite was Karl Urban as the crusty Dr "Bones" McCoy, very much of a piece with the role as originated by the late DeForest Kelley.
This is by far one my most favourite quotes of any sci fi show or film:
'Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before!'
It's makes me tear up thinking about all the adventures the different iterations of Enterprise has had, in dealing new aliens, foreign powers, new planets and solar systems. And what the Enterprise and the Federation stand for. I'd highly recommend to watch the earlier films, as you don't need much of a introduction and background info now you've come to familiarise yourself with the main body of the crew. One thing I will mention is that there isn't as much action in the other OG films as in this film, but it is much more philosophical and makes you think more.
Can you even imagine starting down this wormhole in 2023? So many of Addie's comments made me laugh, having seen everything from the original season 1. Great reaction, welcome to this culture changing series!

I really like the new Star Trek movies.
The cool thing to me is how the new cast played their characters to mirror the originals. Speech patterns, movements, and a lot of characteristics. It made it so much fun.
Except for Zoe Saldana, but I don't worry about it.
I’m not sure if anyone said this in any of the other comments but Romulans and Vulcans share the same ancestry that’s why they look so much alike in both appearance and their shared green blood. They evolved quite differently though and both societies are polar opposites… in the TV show from 2001 called Star Trek Enterprise it actually is a prequel to the Original Series where they show how the Federation would become what it was in the Original series..which was really fascinating and really well done in my opinion. Vulcans were the ones to help humanity develop their warp technology further..but relations between the two species were very tense for at least 50-100 years before the Federation was born. On Vulcan, humans are seen as weak and volatile because they have not learned to control their emotions so that’s why Spock’s mother was treated and seen poorly in Vulcan society!

You said several times that the Enterprise looked bigger than you expected. That’s funny because the Enterprise in this movie is larger than the Enterprise seen in the Original Series and the Original movies. It was a side effect of the Kelvin’s destruction at the hands of Nero. Starfleet determined that because of the great and unknown threats that might lurk in the galaxy they should be better prepared and began building ships larger and meaner than was done before. From the destruction of the Kelvin onwards, that timeline/alternate reality is known as the Kelvin timeline.
the TV shows are so amazing, i started watching next generation when i was 7 or 8, moved on to voyager, and so on, i love the universe.
Other franchises would've simply made a remake of the original story, creating an alternative version of it without saying anything about that.
But for star trek, where everything needs to be logical, they of course made this version with a time travel event, giving us actually a reasonable explanation why there are two different timelimes now. This is what I always appreciated about star trek.
JJ understood Trek far more than he did Star Wars and it shows in these movies/

Since Nimoy's death, his estate, while not officially holding that specific power, was consulted for the casting of Spock during Star Trek: Discovery/Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to once again ensure that the original portrayal is respected while also trying out new things with new Spocks.
Almost 15 years on and two things are still as vivid as when I first saw this in cinemas:
1) Nimoy's closing narration hits all of the feels. All of them. Probably my second favourite version of that after Undiscovered Country.
2) I know this design has its fans but every *single* time I see the Abrams Enterprise I can't help but shudder. Doesn't come close to the movie Constitution class and it's such a shame as the potential's clearly there. Just goes a bit... weird from the neck back.
Film itself still holds up pretty well. Nero gets short changed but with so much world building going on that's not surprising. Core cast is really solid with the main trinity in particular being superb shouts.
Star Trek is one of the most beloved series along with Doctor Who, Star Wars, James Bond, Harry Potter and all the others.

Glad you enjoyed. I would definitely recommend the movies starring the original cast from the series. They're great stories and that should be just enough for you to sense the sentimentality this movie meant to convey. This movie represents the beginning some old friendships, on the screen and in real-life.
The only thing about going with these first is you are hit with a lot of stuff that's contextual to the original. Like Bones declaring he likes Spock (they have a very contentious relationship because Spock is all logic, McCoy emotion), knowing exactly what's coming with the Kobayashi Maru, Admiral Archers beagle, Sulu saying his combat training is in fencing, Chekov struggling to make a V sound, etc.
They obviously didn't diminish your enjoyment of the movie, they didn't want people to need to know the property to watch this one. Just that there's a lot of small details and nods thrown in there that flesh it out that much more. The good news is that it will also work the other way around to a degree.
Love to see you getting into the Star Trek world. Honestly I watched the original movies before I saw the original series and I followed just fine. Really hope we get to see you react to the originals eventually. II, IV, and VI are incredible!

The best way to dive in if not by watching the original series would be to watch the first movies based on the original series, these are... kind of fun but certainly not reflecting the way as more mature characters would behave.
This movie has one of the most intense opening sequences ever, IMO. I absolutely love it.

My uncles loved Star Trek which meant that as a kid I grew up with Star Trek. The Wrath of Khan, Generations, The Undiscovered Country, Into Darkness and First Contact being my favorites!
I grew up with the original series and original movies. I enjoyed these right from the start! I'm sure you're going to be told about Bones McCoy and how you've seen him before. I cannot wait for that reaction!!

You could absolutely check out the original movies. In a way, this kind of prepares you for doing so, since the characters are older and at a different stage in their lives in the old movies. It might also interest you to know that the original movies and TV series all take place in the timeline Old Spock came from--the one where Kirk did know his father and had quite a different life.
Btw... Future Spock .. the actors name is Lenard Nimoy..he played Spock in the 1960's TV series and the 6 original Star Trek Motion pictures, which ran mostly in the 1980s

- the Kobayashi Maru is famous in Star Trek lore, although it changed through the years/series exactly because of Jim Kirk. He was the first to survive the test because he hacked it, since he doesn't believe in no-win scenarios.
- there are some traditions in the franchise, and this one is specially true for The Original Series (and the Kelvin Timeline): you wear a red shirt, your life expectancy will be very, very short. 😅

Okay, you just got a new sub. :) As a person who has loved Star Trek all his life, I can empathize with you - it is not the most accessible franchise to dig into. They really did a great job in this movie of making Trek accessible to a complete Trek neophyte but at the same time giving us trekkies so much good stuff to sink our teeth into again.
Welcome to what trekkies call the Kelvin (from the USS Kelvin that got destroyed in the beginning) Timeline. This was intended as a reboot of the franchise. I recommend, like others, once you get done with the Kelvin Timeline movies Into Darkness and Beyond (which I am assuming you will do) that you go back and hit the original movies starting with The Motion Picture from '79. Some of the movies are kind of difficult to get through, especially with our current perspectives, but over 70% of the content in those movies as a whole is so, so good. Who knows, you may even start watching a series here and there.
Be careful of the world you are stepping into. It's a magical place, but many have become entrapped by the franchise. :) It's a fun ride. This was such a great reaction, it was fun to watch the movie through your eyes.
As a fan of the original Star Trek tv series, this movie blew me away. The casting of all the main characters was spot on, completely building off their 60's counterparts. It was especially a huge surprise to see Leonard Nimoy reprise the character he was so well known for.

I LOVE Star Trek in all its forms so it's great to see you getting into it. I'd say go for the TOS movies first, just keep in mind that The Motion Picture is... not well regarded. But Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, Voyage Home, and Undiscovered Country form a self contained story arc that is most excellent.
Yeah I think this was a good place to start, but jumping directly to Wrath Of Khan would be a good next step, then maybe alternating new ones & old ones. Khan is the only one that later films refer back to in an important way.

How refreshing! To see someone react to a Star Trek movie without all of the baggage of decades of Star Trek knowledge. You didn't know what a Vulcan was or how they behaved and got to discover it first hand.
For the original movies, while it is nice to have a background from the TV show so that you already know the main characters, it's not necessary. Only the 2nd movie follows directly from one of the episodes. Even then, they do a reasonable job of providing the backstory within the movie.
A little tale to the party, but wanted to share a quick bit of trivia about one of the actors. At the very beginning of the film there is an extra in a brown uniform who says the line "Captian we have visual", his name is Randy Pausch, he was a University Professor and lifelong Star Trek fan who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is the coauthor of the book The Last Lecture which is a written account of the final Lecture he gave at the university before his death. The video is available online if you would like to see it, he was a remarkable man and seeing him at the beginning of the movie always chokes me up.
Kirk and Spock is such a legendary friendship. I love that this movie pays much respect to it. ♥
Nice you enjoyed it. I wish you could feel the emotional impact the long time fans had seeing old Spock again and also experiencing the relationships between the crew members at their starting point after having this long history of a 79 Episodes TV show, 6 full length movies and several cameos in many other star trek content. The emotional bond to these characters is strong and even if some fans consider these "reboot/alternate timeline movies" not as good as the originals, they really nailed the recreation of the characters i think. And i think you can watch the older movies without having the knowledge of the TV show, but keep in mind the pacing is much, much slower compared to this "reboot" and the effects are totally outdated. Especially true for the first motion picture. It is more about going on to this journey with the beloved characters than watching an epic blockbuster with amazing fx.
I recall that Uhura's roommate with whom Kirk has a liaison, is played by a relative of Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura in the original series and its follow-up movies.
Question: are you sure that they're related..? Because underneath that green makeup, Rachel is White...and Nichelle (R.I.P.) was Black.

I was really happy with this movie (still am actually). As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I felt they were gentle enough with the canon to include this story and the ones that follow. Respect to Leonard Nemoy and Anton Yelchin. They can never be replaced.
My first experience with Trek was the fourth film The Voyage Home. With no prior knowledge of Trek I followed the plot without issue and encouraged me to check out the other original films and The Next Generation TV series which was airing for the first time in the UK. Loved Star Trek ever since. I can imagine it's daunting to know where to start now with 8 live action shows, 13 films & 3 animated series. Trek 09 is ok, brilliant cast & design but forgets the ideals of Trek & trys to more action packed like Star Wars.
I'm not a trekkie by any means, but these movies definitely got me into the franchise. Thanks for reacting to them!
I grew up watching the original Star Trek series when it aired and then watching it again over endless reruns. My dad took me to hear Leonard Nimoy speak in my hometown of Orlando, FL. when I was about 12 years old. I followed the movies and the TNG rebirth and all of the ancillary series. Star Trek was so ahead of its time and still is. I hope you dig deeper.

The beginning of the movie is one of most emotional scenes with great soundtrack.
Addie, great reaction, so glad you started with this movie. It’s a great origin story for the characters, which you really don’t get from the originals series, and all the actors do a fantastic job portraying them. Also, the writers finding a way to create a reboot while using time travel to keep it in the same universe as the original was amazing.
My recommendation form here is to find a list of important episodes from the original series. There are several lists out there that tell you which episodes contain origin stories and stories that come into play for the later films. You can probably catch all the important storylines in about a dozen episodes. Then you can move on to the original cast films. I think most of them are much better than the sequels to this film, this first one was by far the best.
So happy you’re getting into Star Trek, I hope you enjoy it however you choose to proceed!
Each and every one of the main characters: Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov were well known and beloved by the fanbase. Just imagine what it was like for them when this movie came out. I was fanboying :)

The three latest reboot movies, starting with this one, are great fun for sure, but most of the other Star Trek properties, beginning with TOS (The Original Series) from 1966, are more noted for their story lines dealing with the social commentaries of their time, but also tackling large philosophical topics and ideas, that humanity has been asking since we first looked up towards the stars, concepts like are we alone in the universe, what do we do when we encounter new alien life, how do we deal with artificial intelligence, as well as genetic engineering, what constitutes sentient intelligence, what do we consider as a life form, how responsible are we when great power is thrust onto us, where do we draw the line if at all with the development of new technology. These are just some of the questions Star Trek has tackled over the years, and if you're going down that rabbit, I'll be there for the journey!

We have lost two important Star Trak actors and we will remember them for their telling us the story. The film was fun and extraordinary story, I enjoy watching this movie 🎦

I'm an old fashioned Trekker. I watched Kirk in reruns and every new Trek since 1987 when I was 7.
It's not boring, but can be slow and tedious. Humor can be a bit nuanced and nerdy. Deep Space Nine has really brilliant writing and acting, but still very nerdy because it has a very long storyline going through all 7 years instead of being episodic like most of the other Treks.
When this came out in 2009, I will admit it was refreshing and exciting. Just a new take on an old story. I loved it. Music, effects, the action.
The 2 sequels after it, were overly ambitious and worsened in each iteration.
If anyone listens to the directors commentary for this movie, every damn scene is JJ Abrams favorite scene. He tells you so. Blech!
DS9 is still my all-time favorite, followed closely now by Lower Decks.
I smoke weed and I have an artist brain, so i could never see myself on a starship, but I'd absolutely open up an art shop on the Promenade, and make an arms-length friendship with Quark. Maybe permanently rent out one of his holosuites and retrofit it for my novels. Quark would probably know the corners of the station i can toke in and not set off an alarm. And smuggle in cannabis, in general. 🤣🤣
But Lower Decks fricken SPEAKS TO ME, though. Like, i can absolutely see myself on that damn ship. 🤣🤣
I saw the DVD commentary for this movie and all Director JJ Abrams talked about was Star Wars. There's a lot of homages in this movie to Star Wars.
In which case, JJ Abrams later directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Rise Of Skywalker.
I have to say something about this. I know you said you weren't familiar with the Star Trek series from 1966 (from which each of these characters originated). Scotty's line "I'm giving her all she got!" is iconic. Its one of the great Montgomery Scott lines from the original series, as "I am a doctor, not a physicist." is one of McCoy's iconic line (he'd say, "I'm a doctor, not a...." often when called upon to do things outside his area of expertise). Its one of the reasons old hand fans like myself loved this reboot.
Also, the music during the end credits, begins with "To Boldly Go", the theme song of the original series from 1966. It was enough geek love to bring really hardcore fans to tears.
well, these movies do rely on the older movies, so....if you don't know the order of something, going chronological is always the best way to go. (JFYI: The "old" spock was played by leonard nimoy, who played spock in the old films and the 60s tv series. The original Spock). The mentioned Beagle from captain archer can be experienced in the series "enterprise" (from about 2001 which plays before the original series (TOS)
Wrath of Khan is perfectly fine to watch without having seen anything prior and it is a heck of a movie.
The notion of a hyper-emotional people with a nearly fanatical religion based around logic and detachment (which led to slight, psychic abilities) was groundbreaking Sci-fi when this series premiered in the '60's. And you can see the idea is still intriguing and a great literary device for plot complications.

'One' of the older films is based on 'one' of the episodes of the original series, but I dont think most people had any memory of it at the time, just the general vibe.

This was actually Chris Hemsworth's first American role; before this, he'd only worked in his native Australia and done guest roles on TV and a long-running role on a soap. He was going to return for the fourth movie in this Star Trek series, but then both he and Chris Pine dropped out, and that movie has apparently been cancelled.
Very interesting to see someone start with the modern Trek, but every movie could potentially be someone's first. Glad you liked it!
Ideally you end up watching some of the older stuff and then come back to this movie where another layer of humour makes the experience even better. it's the little things that can make you chuckle. Like when McCoy reacts to the first meeting of Spock at the trial with "I like him!!" Once you see enough of the older stuff you'll get the humour of that line. The Blue girl, the weird alien monster battle, the foolish over cocky paraglider dude, there are so many tips of the hat to the original series. Enjoy the journey back.

My dad took me to the Star Trek movies when I was a kid although I never watched the show - I loved all of them and followed them into adulthood. You can absolutely enjoy the movies without watching the series. However I will say it's really cool to see a reaction from someone who is absolutely innocent of all Star Trek lore.
Hey Addie, as an old-time Trek fan (as a little kid, I watched the original series during its original airing on tv) you did a good job on this reaction! Without having any emotional attachment to the old shows some of the key moments in this movie likely didn't have the same impact on you as it did a lot of us, but you definitely caught on to the spirit of the whole Trek universe. At some point it would be worth your while to watch a handful of old episodes to get a sense of what those are like, but watching the whole series would take too long. Maybe it would be worth watching a few Trek reaction channel videos here on RUclips? The guys at Target Audience have just finished up season 2 of the original series, and they've been having a lot of fun discovering why Star Trek has such a devoted fan base.
You have entered a great universe Addie, hopefully you continue your journey with the other films.
I grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation when I was in high school and college and I have seen all of the original series plus a couple original movies. I think this trilogy did a really good job and I love them.
I enjoyed the series as a kid and I like these movies,because the actors literally look like a younger versions of the actors in the series.
If you're interested in watching some really great episodes from the original series and its successors, just to learn what Star Trek is really about, let us know. I'm sure people are already compiling lists in their heads.
I enjoyed your reaction. The original series ran for 3 years 1966-69 then was cancelled. But after the moon landing, the public became interested in space travel so the series started rerunning in the 1970s. When NASA announced its space shuttle program; they were overrun with letters from across the U.S. naming what the 1st shuttle should be called - Enterprise.
As far as the older movies go it's really only The Wrath of Khan (the second movie) that requires some prior knowledge, but then it actually doesn't require any more knowledge than the sequel to this movie (Star Trek Into Darkness) requires, in fact this sequel makes references back to Wrath of Khan which you won't get without having seen that movie. I assure you that, even taking Wrath of Khan into consideration, you could watch those original 5 movies without any prior knowledge of the tv series and without much fear of getting too lost in what's happening.
In saying that I also don't think this movie is a bad way to dip your toe into the Trek universe.
This trilogy is a great entry point, that's how I did it: I grew up a star wars kid, and never really watched trek until these came out, and it compelled me to check out everything else! Now I've seen it all except for the first motion picture; star trek has some ups and downs but the ups are incredible and worth it!
I hope you do make it to The Motion Picture, it's slow and cerebral, but beautifully shot and well directed. It was my introduction to Trek (when it was in first run: I was 10).
Fun fact about Captain Pike - he was Kirk's mentor in TOS, but wasn't seen except the pilot. We never got more of him until Discovery Season 2 and Strange New Worlds... but he is absolutely KILLING it there!
Star Trek: Discovery (STD) is drek. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is pretty good.
@@Caseytify I'm gonna disagree about Discovery. Season 1, in particular, is a brilliant subversion of Hard Man Military Sci-Fi with the moral that morality isn't a luxury to be sacrificed in war. The rest isn't bad either.

You are absolutely correct, the new Star Trek movies are a good introduction to the Star Trek universe. 2nd and 3rd movies are a good watch as well.
