At one point she considered leaving the show, but was strongly encouraged by Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr to stick with it, because she was one of the very first black women to be portrayed as a major character on TV who wasn't a maid or slave or servant type, but as an equal. She went on to work with NASA on minority recruitment, and was a direct inspiration to Dr. Mae Jameson, the first black female astronaut. Mae Jameson also had a cameo as a crew member in an Episode of Star trek: The Next Generation. So happy that you love this film! :D
The Star Trek fandom is ancient and massive, so naturally there are a lot of opinions about each series and film iterations. A lot of warring passionate opinions in the comments, I'm sure.
Personally, I love that you started with the AOS films! While I understand many of the reasons why old trek fans have beef with these films, I don't share them and I love both TOS and AOS for very different reasons. I love that they went the "alternate universe" route with the time travel, because that separates the stories of these characters from the original series in a neat way, and now we can have multiple versions of these characters I love without making unnecessary comparisons! It's a win-win!
The AOS films and all the fan content they inspired definitely have a special place in my heart.
Also, love that you immediately became so invested in Spock, his dual nature and his and Kirk's friendship, when those are pretty much the driving forces of why the original series has always been so loved :D
I whole-heartedly recommend that you keep watching these films!

Hey Jen, Star Trek and Sci-Fi in general are such a great conduit to postulate on human emotions and interactions in the future. Humans react the same way to unknown environments and circumstances since the dawn of time. With fear and trepidation. Since the future is unknown, the palette for world-building is infinite when it's come to sci-fi. Then place likable characters in that environment with dramatic circumstances and we get a very compelling storyline.

Hey Jen, welcome to the Star Trek universe. There are those who are lovers of all things Star Trek (a.k.a. "Trekkies") and those who are Star Wars lovers (a.k.a. "Warsies"). I am a great lover of both.
I definitely and highly recommend watching the other two Trek films along with some of the original series/movies as well. People on your social media and RUclips handles will give you the appropriate suggestions on which to watch to help move you along accordingly.
    Some facts about the Enterprise:
"The Enterprise was originally going to be named Yorktown, but creator Eugene "Gene" Roddenberry was fascinated by the aircraft carrier Enterprise and had 'always been proud of that ship and wanted to use the name.' The NCC-1701 registry stems from NC being one of the international aircraft registration codes assigned to the United States. The second C was added because Soviet aircraft used Cs, and creator Matt Jefferies believed a venture into space would be a joint operation by the United States and Russia. Jefferies rejected the numbers 3, 6, 8, and 9 as 'too easily confused' on (television) screen; he eventually reasoned the Enterprise was the first vessel of Starfleet's 17th starship design, hence 1701. "The Making of Star Trek" explains that USS means 'United Space Ship' and that "Enterprise is a member of the Starship Class". Licensed texts, on-screen graphics, and dialogue later describe the ship as a Constitution-class vessel."
I look forward to the next Trek reaction(s)! 📽❤️🚀

This trilogy is the perfect intro for Star Wars fans looking to get into Star Trek, mostly because JJ Abrams(who directed the first two) is a Star Wars fan and directed these movies as such. The creators of this trilogy were also nice enough to set this all in an alternate timeline, a lesson I wish most modern Trek would learn from.
I know you're unlikely to see this but I recommend checking out Old Trek and the order that I think is most understandable for newbies(which is always contested by some Trek hardliners) is watching it all in-universe chronological order. Which in my opinion goes like this:
    -Star Trek: First Contact(movie)
    -Star Trek: Enterprise(series)
-Star Trek: The Original Series(series)(I recommend finding a "best of" or "must watch" episode list for this one)
-Star Trek: The Original Series movies(there are 6)
    -Star Trek: The Next Generation(series)
-The first 3 Next Generation movies(you can skip First Contact here since it was the first thing on this list[there's time-travel involved so just trust me if this seems confusing here])
    -Star Trek: Deep Space 9(series)
    -Star Trek: Voyager(series)
    -Star Trek: Nemesis(movie)
I would avoid any modern Trek, they don't really hold to past lore or Canon, and are honestly not up to par with classic Trek. And of course finish this trilogy out before anything, the third is my personal favorite. LLAP 🖖

And I've watched every Star Trek up through Star Trek Enterprise. So I'm biased. I have two things to say. When it comes to the order to watch these in, don't listen to us. Do what feels right. Because whatever order you watch them in IS the "correct" order.
And two, speaking as someone with over half a century worth of watching, seeing you stepping into this universe and reacting to it (no matter where you enter the saga) is a delight. Since I've discovered your channel I have greatly enjoyed watching your reactions. The fact that you give old movies a chance, like starting your James Bond journey at the very beginning, is really awesome and it seems you can just enjoy them regardless whether they are a bit dated or not. I grew up in the 60’s watching the original Star Trek series and have watched every series and movie, and have even attended Star Trek conventions… so, I think you’d call me a true Trekkie. Lol
I’m very happy that you have started to discover the amazing Star Trek universe that I’ve loved for so long, BUT, I’m disappointed that you’ve started with the reboot. Don’t get me wrong, I like the new movies, but fans weren’t thrilled that everything they’ve known and loved for the past 60 years was wiped out with a new timeline, or the fact that they rehash and change plots and characters from the original shows.
You would have enjoyed this movie much more if you’d seen the original series and movies first by watching the friendships, personalities and characters develop over the many years. Seeing Spock and McCoy bickering at every chance has been a delight for me over the years.

🖖 OLD TREK. Fantastic Jen! You must continue your Trek. Like others, I strongly recommend watching the first six films next, then returning to "Into Darkness" and "Beyond". The main reason being that "Star Trek: Into Darkness" heavily homages "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan". You don't necessarily need to watch the original TV series as "Star Trek: The Motion Picture(1979)" is an excellent jumping on point. It is a much slower paced film though. The middle four films, or "Next Generation" films; Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis do require at least watching a dozen or so key episodes of that series to fully appreciate. They don't do as good a job giving the full cast proper spotlight and feature only two characters fully. Live long and prosper.

Awesome reaction, Jen! And yes, you definitely need to watch old Trek! If you do, you’re in for a real treat.
After watching the first film “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”, I’d recommend watching The Original Series Episode 22, titled “Space Seed” before watching the 2nd film “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” to get a good backstory that’ll help you understand the plot of the movie better. The first 6 films are with the cast from the Original Series and the remaining films are with the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”.
The JJ Abrams films follow what is referred to as “The Kelvin Timeline” which altered the history and origins of how the characters became part of the Star Trek universe.

Yeah, that would be awesome to see a reactor give the original series a go, even if Jen only does a small selection of fan-favorite episodes (like a top 10, perhaps) to start with if she doesn't want to commit to watching every single episode. Of course, the ideal way would still be to just watch all of the original series first so that she gets to see the great dynamic between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy and grows to love them as characters. But if the time investment for that is too much, I'd love to see her at least react to a couple episodes.

OLD TREK. Keep in mind this movie and the next two after it are set in the Kelvin Timeline, which is a different reality from all the other Star Trek properties (movies, television shows, etc.). So there is a lot of references/homages to actual Star Trek in this that you would appreciate more if you watched them, but there are serious differences as well (as you noted). However, this movie is still a good intro to the franchise for some one completely new to it (unless you started just watching the Original Series television show). I would highly suggest that before you watch ST: Into Darkness, you watch ST: The Motion Picture and then ST: The Wrath of Khan. That will help you contrast both this movie and Edge of Darkness better.

Congrats, Jen, on hopping aboard the "Wagon Train to the Stars"... which is the term Gene Roddenberry used to pitch Star Trek to the Big Three American television networks back in 1964. Westerns ruled TV in those days. You are in that special class where your introduction to Trek is the 2009 film set in The Kelvin Timeline without any prior knowledge of the original series/films events. As far as continuing your journey with Star Trek, I would recommend watching OLD TREK before watching the 2013 and 2016 sequels. I'm not saying to watch the entirety of the TOS(The Original Series) era, but watch a few episodes to familiarize with the characters...the main characters, the Enterprise ship, the adversaries(Klingons, Romulans), get to know the story that Roddenberry wanted to tell. Then begin with the films. The Motion Picture(1979), The Wrath of Khan(1982)

A-MAZ-ING! Great reaction, Jen. Just so you know, you are now obligated to watch at least the other two 'Kelvin Timeline' movies - Into Darkness and Beyond. Star Trek is a MUCH wider and deeper universe than anything I think you may have come across before. This movie probably touches on a lot of lore - it's kind of setup as a reboot/alternate timeline for the TV series Star Trek that aired back in the 60s for three seasons. In that show, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura went on their adventures with the USS Enterprise. Yes, Lenoard Nimoy played Spock in The Original Series (TOS) as well as older Spock in this movie. This movie touches a lot of things from TOS - Kirk and Spock's (and McCoy's) friendship being at the top of the list. Spock was actually the favored over Kirk by many viewers throughout the run of the show and it's many years in syndication. You can (and should) watch TOS if you liked these characters. I think you may be a closet trekkie without even knowing it from your reaction to them. I will also say one of the things that impressed me the most about this movie is the new visualiztion of these characters by new actors. All of them just nailed the feel of these characters from TOS.
Probably after you finish the Kelvin Timeline movies (you will finish them, yeah? :)) , the next logical thing to watch would be the the older films starting with The Motion Picture from 1979. Please, please be aware that some of these movies (and all of Star Trek really) are hit and miss - there are some that are really, really good, and some not so much. But generally, just like Star Wars, fans love them all.
Also know that there are 13 movies all told and 6 multi season TV shows that have all been completed, plus another 5 more tv series that are currently in production with at least a season for each, and there are probably more in development. There is a LOT of Star Trek content out there, and be careful about falling down the rabbit hole - unless you have already fallen down it, and in that case, just sit back and enjoy the ride, and react to what you can so that we can take the journey with you.
Again, great job, and whatever you choose to do for us, I will be very, very happy.

Jan if you will go back to when Scotty beams aboard Kirk,Pike, and Spock simultaneously look at his Transporter Asst. His name is Chris Doohan. James Doohans son. He also plays Scotty in the Fan Web made videos called 'Star Trek Continues' and he not only favors his father but does a fantastic Scottish accent like his father. No disrespect to Simon Pegg but had Chris Doohan been a younger man then he would have been the better choice to play his father's role. Thank you Jan for your reaction Podcasts!❤

Hey Jen, it's been a while still watching just haven't commented in a while. But I'm a Star Trek guy cuz I'm old and I remember the originals. You don't have to post them or you can. I'm glad you enjoyed this. But you need to watch some of the original series. There are so many inside jokes. Character references. Pop culture phrases. And relationship dynamic that you didn't get. This is basically an origin story. Understanding who kirk, spock, checkof, Sulo, basically the whole crew. One of the things that you will get which is amazing about this movie. Is how all the characters really nailed the speech patterns and quirkiness of their personalities. Love you Jen love your channel you're awesome. Before you watch the next movie. Please, please, watch a few episodes of the first season of the original and it'll make the movies much better. ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦

Lifelong Trekkie here! I actually think this movie is a great place to start for new fans. It has modern sensibilities while sticking to the core emotional resonance of the original characters, and even though it’s full of Easter eggs, a new person doesn’t need to have seen any of the previous TV shows or movies to understand it.
You should definitely finish this movie series before moving on to the original, because this trilogy is its own thing. But once you’re done here, if you want to know more, there are many places to start.
The original Star Trek aired in the late 1960s, and while its special effects haven’t aged well, it is still full of many great stories, and introduced the original versions of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, Chekhov, etc. You wouldn’t need to watch the full series, though. There are many “Essential Episode” guides out there to follow.
After the original series came an animated show and a series of 6 movies starring the original cast. Towards the end of the movies, a new TV series (Star Trek: The Next Generation) was launched, with all new characters on an all-new Enterprise, set roughly 100 years after the original series. That series eventually got its own movies, too, AND spawned two spin-off TV series - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.
All of those series ran for 6+ seasons.
Then came a prequel series called Star Trek: Enterprise, set 100 years BEFORE the original show.
And now (whew), there are currently 5 - yes, 5! - brand new Star Trek shows running: Discovery, Picard, Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds. All of them have some connection to the original shows, and even explore new genres for Star Trek (animated kids’ show with Prodigy, and animated adult comedy with Lower Decks).
Needless to say, there is A LOT of Star Trek out there. I love all of it, but some fans prefer the classics over the new stuff.
Either way, it’s a heck of a good time. I believe that Star Trek at its worst is still better than most other shows. It’s stayed true to its guiding vision of IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations) for 50+ years, and that’s not something most other franchises can claim.
Live long & prosper, and welcome to the Trek family!

@@jenmurrayxo You’re welcome! I don’t like fans who try to gatekeep like that. Star Trek is for everyone, always has been. Any media that brings new fans to Trek is a good thing IMO, and it’s the job of the old guard like me to welcome them to the bridge.

The Next Generation is my personal favorite, but I haven’t come across a Trek show I don’t like in some way. If you are looking at the old Trek. If I recall correctly, the first big block buster Star Trek movie, The Wrath of Khan. The studio did a one-time airing of the Old TV series episode it was based on call Space Seed. I think the idea was that most of the audience would have some familiarity with the characters and have a better understanding of the background behind the story.

James T. Kirk's name was "James R. Kirk" in the episode Where No Man Has Gone Before. A young Spock was beaten up by Vulcan boys in the animated Star Trek episode Yesteryear(1973). The Chris Pine Kirk is "Maverick meets Han Solo". This is the first Star Trek movie in the "Kelvin timeline".

I certainly hope you venture into the original movies. They are worth watching and you don't really need to watch any of the original episodes for them (Space Seed is one that you will get recommended a lot before watching Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan). If you do venture into the four "Next Generation" movies, it is highly recommended watching a few of the TNG episodes prior to the movies.
Also, if you loved the music in this movie, you'll love James Horner's score in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.

This one and the next are pretty good. But I think you'd get more from them if you had already seen the original movies. The even number Treks are typically the good ones.
I think you won't like the originals as much if this is what your expectation is when you watch Star Trek.

Though, to be fair, only 5 was truly horrible.
1 is important and truly beautiful, just really overly drawn out and slow. But it did give us one of the best musical tracks ever, the Klingon Battle Theme. Not to mention the possible origin of the Borg.
3 gave us Christopher Loyd as a Klingon and the most gut wrenching death scene in all of Trek... you know the one I mean 😢

Oh there is a ester egg in this film from Star Wars. ILM did the special effects on this film and they snuck R2D2 in to it. If you play the scene where the Enterprise arrives at Vulcan super slow R2 can be seen in on the view screen in all the wreckage.

This is a fun movie by itself.
What rubbed a lot of Star Trek fans the wrong way was that the plot of this movie goes back to a time pre-Kirk and restarts the timeline. What that means is that according to this movie, nothing in the history of Star Trek TV-shows or movies ever happened. It completely erased everything that Trek-fans had loved over a period of around 50 years, and said that these movies are the only Star Trek that exists now.
You could argue against that idea, but that is certainly how I felt when I stood up out of my seat at the end of the movie when I saw it in the theater.
By itself, though, it's a likable movie.
The main differences between these movies and the Trek TV-shows are:
    1) Action (The new movies are mostly action at a frenetic pace. The TV-shows have very little action.)
    2) Ideas (The movies are mostly plots as an excuse for action. The TV-shows are mostly examination of an idea. Like, an episode will start with something happening that will raise a moral or philosophical question, which then gets examined through the plot & discussion.)
Neither approach is better than the other, but there is an argument to be made that these new movies are not very Star Trekkian. Not to say that you shouldn't enjoy the new movies. They're fine. But if you do go on to watch some of the original series (series'?, series's?, How do you pluralize series? :P), they will be different in tone.
    Either way, enjoy. :)
