In the lead up before they released this one, JJ Abrams said that one of his goals was to make it more like Star Wars. Which annoyed me, as a fan of both franchises; at their best (or maybe even at their average) they're both deeper than anything Abrams ever touched.

So, after you watch the rest of the movies in this timeline, you have multiple Star Trek shows and movies to watch! I started watching Star Trek somewhere in the mid to late 70s, when it was in syndication, so I've gotten to see the concept grow and expand. Love watching new people join that universe.

I don't know who told you Star Trek is similar to Star Wars, but to me they're totally the opposite. Star Wars it's a fantasy tale with just a sci-fi skin. Star Trek is pure sci-fi. In The Star Trek lore, everything is scientifically plausible. You have the earth, the proper time and the real galaxies, which in Star Wars are not present.
Anyway, Star Trek was born has a series in late 1960, named as TOS (the original series) and has a lot of stories that make you think. There are also sequel series, also vbery good to me, and of course the movies.
This movie uses the character of TOS. The actor who plays the older Spock in this movie is the same who played Spock in the original series.

The young guy who played Chekov, Anton Yelchin, was killed in a freak accident when filming Star Trek Beyond. His car rolled down the hill of his driveway and crushed him against the gates pillar. That movie was dedicated to him and the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy. They said they would not recast Anton's role as Chekov in any future Star Trek films.

I used to own all of the Star Trek television shows and movies from the original series to Voyager on DVDs. By watching the behind the scenes footage for the original series I understand that Gene Rodenberry went to the television executives and asked if he could add some color to the bridge. The television executives granted his request thinking that he would paint the walls or something. Instead Nichelle Nickels (sorry if I misspelled her name) joined the crew as the communications officer (or whatever was her official title) and history was made by having the first African descendant to be shown on an American television show as being a member of the bridge on a starship. Before the original Star Trek television show aired it is my understanding that all of the American sci fi television shows featured only white people living and traveling in outer space. 🪐

Its extremely satisfying for a Trekkie like me that yall compare this movie to Star Wars. The new Star Trek films and some of the shows really have a typical sci fi action film vibe like Star Wars. But Star Trek used to be and sometimes still today is different. Its more serious and more about the messege and about mirroring and overcoming our societies and personalities flaws. Its more philosophical and ethical dilemma is way more important than space fights and speacial effects. This movie on the other hand. The filming used to be different too. Longer scenes, more dialogue, less music

It's kind of a shame you guys aren't so familiar with the Star Treks that came before; knowing the Star Trek universe and character history adds a layer of enjoyment that makes the 'reboot' more enjoyable.
That being said, I think it's kind of genius to reboot Star Trek as a change of timeline that makes an entirely new universe possible, utilizing characters and organizations we are already familiar with. It's dropping people we 'know' into new situations with new stresses to test how far those things will stretch them into different people.

@@DaKidsReact I was speaking more to the different TV series.
I've been following since the very first series with Shatner and Nimoy in the 1960s and on into "Next Generation", "Voyager", and "Deep Space Nine". By then the franchise had jumped to film adaption.
I lost interest in Scott Bakula's "Enterprise", but I have to say I wish I had cable to watch more recent extensions of the TV franchise.
The original 1960s series set canon and iconic characters, as well as basic policy that keeps alive the liberal ideals of the 1960s; those ideals have become policy i how the Federation functions.
Beyond that, the original series was sloppy and not well-developed, but who knew the franchise would have such a demanding fanbase that it would endure over 60 years? And as it endured, the writing, the science, the acting, and ALL the production values would improve.
There was a time when Star Trek was a silly series on TV, a comic book for nerds, but it's moved to being fine theater with depth. Science fiction was always a kind of morality play, using aliens to give us enough disconnect to allow us to honestly evaluate our unintended and intended injustices.
      But back to my point:
Not having the backstory of the original 1960s context does leave you missing some of the fun. There will be references that will sail right over your heads. But the Star Trek universe is now so rich that it does not diminish the enjoyment of the reboot films. Please next watch "Star Trek: Into Darkness" and then "Star Trek: Beyond".

Good to see people still get into Star Trek.
For a lot of original Trek fans the so called Kelvin timeline is way different from how things gone down before, but because it is an entirely different timeline, I think it is a good entry point for present day audiences.
The following movies continue with the same crew. If you wrap up with these, that is fine, but it may get you interested in older Trek. The Next Generation movies, or the original crew's adventures.
The further back in time you go in the release dates, the slower the action gets, and more nerdy the story is.
But it sure was nice to have the OG Spock interact with the young crew here.

Star Trek and Star Wars are NOT the same thing.
Star Trek was SOCIALLY advanced, Star Wars was TECHNOLOGY advanced.
Star Trek was the FIRST television Sci-Fi series to tackle social issues including the VERY FIRST interracial kiss on T.V. back in the day when racial tensions were still high, and interracial relations were still HIGHLY Taboo. They covered many social issues, and did it AS ENTERTAINMENT. Most people never realized they were being TAUGHT about living together.
Star Wars was TECHNOLOGICALLY advanced in that it created many new ways to create realistic scenes and created the birth of CGI. Lucas created many new ways to shoot scenes that far surpassed the "green screen" era of filming. While Star Wars still covered similar lessons, it did it in a HIGHLY technologically advanced method of filming that made REALISM a new way of viewing entertainment.
BOTH are historically, and socially significant in their own way, but they are NOT the same... The ONLY similarity is the Sci-Fi space genre they both existed in.

It got middling reviews, but Star Trek: Beyond (the 3rd in this particular Star Trek series) is REALLY good. The second is ok, but is far too much like the original Star Trek 2. Overall, if you go down the ST rabbit hole, particularly with movies, you'll be entertained much more often than not.

Want to add from my other comment, the future, older Spock was played by the late, Leonard Nimoy. He was the OG, ORIGINAL Spock from the original, late 1960's TV show that inspired the later, more recent TV shows and movies. If you want to watch more of these movies with THIS cast (Chris Pine as Captain Kirk) - there are three movies with Chris Pine - and in my opinion, these are the best and most fun of all the Star Trek movies. Others will disagree - and that's fine! I do think some of the shows and movies with Patrick Stewart - playing a new, captain - Captain Picard are good - but I really love Chris Pine's charm and humor as Captain Kirk. ❤

Loved your reaction and so glad you enjoyed it so much. I love this reboot of the Star Trek movies (the 2nd one with *mostly the same cast is very good as well). There are "Trekkies" and Star Wars fans. I like both, but lean toward Star Wars (mostly the original, early movies). Anyway, it's too bad you never saw any of the late 1960's Star Trek TV shows because this movie has so many hilarious references that you just don't know - but still enjoyable anyway without knowing the lore. Love your reactions. 🙌🏽 ❤ You should watch at least ONE of the original, 1960's Star Trek TV shows just so you can see where this came from. It will look really corny to you, but you might find it really fun.

Not just a great reboot but one the best sci-fi movies ever. You'll love the two sequels with the same cast - "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Star Trek Beyond". Wish they'd made at least a couple more. I find these films better than the new Star Wars movies. Loved your reaction as always! Specially the "centipede in the brain" bit, LMAO!!

Just ran across your video. So you will know, Star Trek has nothing to do with Star Wars. Star Wars is set in a time long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Star Trek (The Original Series) is set in the future and takes place in this galaxy, our galaxy. Star Trek came first with the original series premier in 1966. Star Wars hit the big screen in 1976. Star Trek , since 1966, has become the biggest television franchise in history😮😊

Both Star Trek and Star Wars would be classified as Sci Fi movies. However you are mistaken when you make the assumption that a Sci Fi movie or book has to be set in outer space. A perfect example of this is one of the first books ever written that could be classified as being Sci Fi and that is Jules Verne’s book Around The World In Eighty Days. If you are interested in watching more Sci Fi movies you will find that there is a vast selection to choose available today. I will just recommend three of them which have very little or nothing to do with outer space. Two of the movies star the actor Charlton Heston but playing different characters in each movie. The first movie came out in the late 1960s and is called Planet of the Apes. They remade this movie sometime in the past 15 to 20 years. The other movie he made came out in the early 1970s and is called Soylent Green. The third movie also came out in the early to mid 1970s and is called Logan’s Run and stars Michael York. As far as I know they have not made any remakes for either Soylent Green or Logan’s Run.

The Star Trek movies made after this one have the same cast & a couple of new caritors, and the movies made before this one have the original cast playing the same roles, (Kirk, Spock, Ohura, Mc Coy & Scotty)

you know, it didn't register on me the first time, but the way he chuckles at "enlist" there is important because you don't get to be captain of a ship as an enlisted man, unless through exemplary service meriting a field recommendation by an officer.
if you were to enlist in Starfleet, you'd be posted in and out of starships or stations, wherever you'd be required.
if you were to join the academy to be an officer, you'd be *_joining_* Starfleet, for life potentially, living ON your assigned ship.
Pike here is telling him "leave all of this and come with me", and Kirk of course is like "You're trippin', man."

Great reaction. This is a reboot from the original series. The cast is great and copies a lot of the mannerisms of the original cast. For the previous movies:
Star Trek The Motion Picture - it’s decent but very slow.
2 Wrath of Khan is excellent
3 Search for Spock is better than avg
4 The Voyage Home is great
    5 Final Frontier is average
6 Undiscovered Country is good and the last one with the full original cast
Then come the four Next Generation movies. Some of them were good others avg.
Then the reboots which this one is the first.

It is, IMHO, the greatest television series of all time. 79 episodes of intelligent science fiction.
