Not only is this a modern retelling that is faithful to the original series, it’s one of the best sci fi movies out there. It feels real. Especially the scene on the drilling rig. Wow!
Faithful and carefully crafted, but in an alternate timeline in which Kirk's personality is completely different and Vulcan will no longer be much of a player, since they're almost all dead.
I've been a Trekkie since I was a kid in the 70's. A lifetime of conventions and all. I love the reboot and agree it's a great intro. Hope you continue with Trek, it's a great universe with a whole lot of lore.
Vulcans are actually very passionate. The overwhelming majority just choose and train to repress their emotions in favor of Vulcan logic, which led their society out of a dark period.
Yeah people often mistake Vulcans as being devoid of emotion, when really, they're even more emotional than we are and suppressing that is a means of survival physically, mentally and spiritually.
Specifically, Vulcan went through a phase best described as 'Mad Max with Psionic Warlords' and Surak's philosophy of logic and truth brought peace. Also, I want a movie or six set in 'Mad Max with Psionic Warlords' Vulcan.
Though a child of the 60's, I love this iteration of Star Trek. The casting was outstanding, as was the SFX and character dynamics. Great to see a 'Trekkie virgin'. I enjoyed your insight & appraisal immensely. ; )
This film was a sequel (it was the 11th film in the Trek series), a prequel (introduced the characters and how they teamed up), and a reboot (time travel which spawned and alternate reality split from the prime universe).
I have to admit, they introduced the audience to something new but also something that already existed, it was a smart move specially for the alternate universe thing
Pretty impressive that Vkunia was able to catch that the Red Shirt was going to die with no prior knowledge about Star Trek. 😆 (On the original series, in almost every episode when a character would die it would be a Security Officer, which would use the red uniform. Yellow is Command, blue is Medical & Sciences.)
In TOS it might even be the same red shirt. Curly haired dude died a few times I believe... Also in the Star Trek 25th Anniversary game if you decided to do something dangerous your red shirt would jump in "allow me to move that rock, Captain" and die for you.
I'm so glad they not only got Leonard Nimoy for this, but also that he was the voice to state "Space... the final frontier..." at the end! These were really good movies, I'm sad that they've only made the three of them.
33:13 “Something tells me that was unscripted” yeah, no. The opposite. “Fascinating” is basically Spock’s catchphrase, always has been. It’s exceedingly scripted fanservice
Yeah... not sure who told her this was an "introduction" to the Trek universe. It's basically the opposite. It's a tribute to it and pays a LOT of fan-service and references back to the original series.
Everyone: Okay, so that's Kirk. Yay... that's Uhura! OMG, that's Bones!! Vicki: Oooh, it's Chris Pine. Hey, it's Zoe Saldana! Wait... is that Karl Urban?!? It actually pains me to watch someone that gets none of the characters, references, or even grasps the plot... and is more interested in the actors than what's going on.
@@Mr.Ekshin kinda felt the same. Don’t so much mind her not getting the Trek references - if you don’t know, you just don’t know, and that’s fair - but so many reactors spend forever going “omg [some actor] is in this?!” Yes, actors tend to be in movies, calm tf down. Fine to acknowledge it, but then watch the actor work, instead of just the actor? I saw someone miss half the plot of something because they couldn’t get over Mark Hamill being in it. He’s on the cast list, it’s not a miracle.
@Mr.Ekshin It's very self-contained - the film tells you everything you need to know to get its story - and drops enough lore that its world is understandable. That's what makes it a solid introduction to Trek for newcomers. Yes, there's lots of easter eggs for us old hands, but understanding them isn't necessary to enjoy the film. We all have our personal list of 'introductory episodes' for newcomers, but Trek 2009 requires no scene-setting. You don't have to explain 'okay, watch this from TOS; then this from TNG, which is set nearly 100 years after that one you just watched; then this from DS9 which is set around the same time but with a totally different crew, unless its series 4 onwards...' - you can just let them watch it, and it tells its story. Then you can say 'okay, now you have a general idea of what Trek is, you can either start at the beginning or I can give you some episodes I think you might like' and go from there.
Leanard Nimoy was the original Spock from the original series. So he is from the prior timeline. Young Spock (Zachary Quinto) is from the Kelvin Timeline. 😂
@@carlosfer2201In "Wrath of Khan," Kirk is eating an apple while he tells the story of how he cheated the Kobayashi Maru back when he was in the Academy.
@@carlosfer2201 We are told Kirk actually got a commendation for original thinking when he reprogrammed the simulation, haha, so its quite different from how things played out in the Kelvin timeline. Also, it wasn't just an anecdote either, The Wrath of Khan opens with the Kobiyashi Maru test while the topic of death and facing a no-win situation is the major theme throughout the whole film.
I had never thought about it that way, but this really is a very good entry point for new fans! You get a condensed introduction to all the key characters in 2 hours. Perfect!
That was the reason why they made the movie. I’m really happy it worked. I always hated how mean some of my fellow Trek fans are towards this part of the franchise. It’s not my favorite film, but I had fun. It helped revitalize my beloved Star Trek, so I’m grateful for its existence.
Life long Trekker here. I’ve been watching trek reactors for years. I’ve been watching you for years now & you are one of my top 5 favorite reactors in general. YES !!!!! Now you are doing some Star Trek. Welcome 🎉 It is all good, old school, new school, the original series thru Strange New Worlds. I look forward to your discovery of all of this 🖖
The mission statement of the Enterprise at the end is literally the summation of Star Trek as a franchise, that tells you everything you need to know about the franchise in one statement. :D
I'd not thought of starting with the movie before - but it does give a good "crash course" in the Trek universe. And, you're aware already that it's an alternate timeline, so as you see other films and series over time, you wont be surprised by the differences! Glad you enjoyed it! it's an amazing thing to explore, but i have one bit of advice - while Gene Roddenberry had a tremendous influence on all parts of the franchise, each group of movies and TV series have different tones. Don't let that change your enjoyment of all of them. Keep up the great work, and look forward to many more Star Trek reactions!
This movie's not great (not bad, just stupid but charming fun), but I'll forever love it for getting so many people into the rest of Trek. It seems like half the people I find online reacting to, reviewing or otherwise talking about Star Trek started with this movie and liked it enough to go back and watch the earlier stuff and often keep going into the current shows.
The mistake that Pike makes: he says that "the Federation is a peacekeeping humanitarian armada"... nope. That's Starfleet. The Federation is the civilization that Starfleet protects.
I've been a Trekkie since the early 80's and whilst I have a list of 'starter' episodes to introduce new people to the franchise, Star Trek 2009 is a very good self-contained introduction for newer audiences, despite some of the more... vocal elements of the Trek fanbase. It tells its own, self-contained story and gives enough lore for an understanding of that world without being overbearing. It does what it intended well enough, despite some logical inconsistencies, and tends to create an interest in the older shows and movies, which is always good imho. I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I hope you continue to explore the strange new worlds of Trek.
Vicky after this could check out the first show from 1966(If you like watching classic tv) and the first 5 movies because I guarantee her to be blown away especially Wrath of Khan
All 3 movies are so good for this cast of actors. In the second film of this series Benedict Cumberbauch became one of my favorite actors. Just the way he portrayed Khan was so good. Loved all his work since this film
The whole thing about Uhura not having a first name isn't just a thing the movie does for fun: when Spock calls her "Nyota," it's the first time she's ever HAD a first name. (Fans proposed several; of those ideas, "Nyota" was the one original showrunner Gene Roddenberry and original Uhura actress Nichelle Nichols wanted to get onto the screen.) It's a wink to long-term fans. Fortunately, they also managed to make it work as a gag in its own right. As someone who has been watching Star Trek since the 80s, there are only two things I would mention. The first is that the TV shows are a lot slower than this movie but also a lot more profound. This movie, for all its strengths -- it helped rejuvenate the franchise; we wouldn't have the TV shows we do today if it weren't for JJ Abrams -- is basically just an action movie that happens to use Star Trek characters. Meanwhile, the TV shows will stop and think about things like loss, racism, morality, forgiveness, the cost of war, the question of whether the ends justify the means. Heck, there are elements of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" that are basically a Holocaust allegory! The other is that this franchise is HUGE: Eight shows that reached a series finale, two more that were canceled halfway, one show that's still going on, at least two shows in development, and 13 movies with two more in the works, one of them starring Michelle Yeoh. You're not going to like everything. And that's okay!: you don't have to! There's room in this franchise for everyone. And we're always glad to welcome another Trekkie!
Nichelle was a talented singer, dancer and actress. She was once tempted to leave the series to take a role on Broadway, however, a conversation with Martin Luther King Jr. changed her mind. He told her he was a big fan of the show and urged her to continue on as a role model.
As a Star Trek fan since the beginning, I had almost the same response to this movie as you did. I had not really thought of it as a starting place for a noob. It is actually awesome in that role. Nearly every theme of Star Trek is brought in to play. Great reaction.
I'm a trekkie from way back and I, too, loved this reboot. Personally, though, I found Into Darkness to be pretty awful on a number of levels. Star Trek: Beyond, though, was a big improvement.
As this is the 23rd Century, "paperwork" doesn't exist. The term is still used, but it mostly refers to digital documentation. Much of which gets filled out almost automatically since EVERY Citizen on Earth is entered into a Global Database; which is accessible by the Federation, which itself has several dozen Worlds as members. So Kirk's Starfleet processing is likely automated once he's AT the Academy.
@@ChrissonatorOFL Tell me do you feel good about being SMUG, wise guy?? Star Trek The Next Generation is in the 24th Century. THIS timeline in is the 23rd Century. Here's the proof smart ass. A bit of fun trivia: The Romulan at the end who says ' that'll ignite the red matter' wasn't the actor on screen, the line is spoken by Wil Wheaton, who played Wesley Crusher is Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Not where I would have suggested starting, but it is an entertaining film. Glad you liked it. The TV show ran 3 years in the mid to late 1960s. The cast came back to lend their voices to the animated series in the eaely 1970s. Then there were several reunion films, and then new series featuring different characters. It is a very extensive franchise. I would like to mention that while the previous film and TV entrys had action sequences, this "Kelvin Timeline" series definitely stepped up the action and special effects. Previous Trek was more thoughtful and philosophical, made on much smaller budgets. Good luck on your continuing journey with the Star Trek franchise.
No hate from this Trekkie for starting with the "Kelvin Timeline" reboot. Just like I've never hated on anyone who started the franchise with TNG or DS9. There may be parts of the franchise you like more or less, (much less), than other parts, (I'm looking at you Star Trek: The Animated Series from the '70s), but there are enough options to appeal to a variety of preferences. (I personally enjoyed Voyager and Enterprise just as much as TNG, which had some stellar episodes.)
I grew up with random episodes of the entire TNG era but Voyager stuck with me because Spike TV would have them on after school and my Dad would be watching it. Thanks to Netflix I go introduced Enterprise and loved it (I still got Faith :P ). As you said it doesn't matter where you get introduced just sit back and enjoy.
Glad to see a nuanced and calm take after all the hate comments! I started with the reboot and then TNG. I liked most of it and can calmly say to the "old and true Trekkies" that TOS was not that great just nostalgia. The reboot is fine and you can skip it after the first watch if it bothers you
*Fun fact: the transpoter officer sitting next to Simon Pegg when he beams Kirk, Spock and Pike back to the Enterprise is Christopher Doohan, James Doohan's son. James Doohan played "Scotty" in the original tv shows and movies in the prime timeline.
So happy to see this one getting some love. It's a fantastic movie, and a great intro to the really dense universe of Star Trek. Great thing is, it introduces so much foundational lore in a short time, like a crash course, without actually altering or taking away from the old timeline. Highly recommend the more recent shows as well, like Strange New Worlds. Also one hill that I'll absolutely die on is that this film did Warp Speed better than anyone else (disregarding the science of it lol). Never felt more power behind the jump to warp, and it's incredible at the end, seeing the warp bubble straining against the gravity of the black hole. Chills every time.
@@ChrissonatorOFL Very true. When I said foundational lore I meant the basic stuff; warp travel, different alien races, Vulcans actually having feelings in addition to their logic, core principles of the Federation, etc. All of which is relevant for the other pieces of media, including SNW, even if the story itself, which is obviously an alternate timeline, is not
Nero's ship is a combination of a mining ship and stolen Borg technology. You'll meet the Borg in the original timeline. Kirk in this movie is very much the meme version of the character - womanizing brash maverick - rather than the one we actually got in the show and films. Which is explained by living a different life.
"Is the parking brake on??" in a sarcastic tone was in fact the joke of the scene. Pike turned to look at Spock before asking the question in a casual joking manner. Being Vulcan and not accustomed to humor, Spock hears it, scans the situation and formally asks if Sulu forgot to disengage the external inertial dampener. Listen to that phrase again. The external inertial dampener or... loosely translated as "the outside device that stops inertia or the ship to drift/float around" is active. The dampener really is the ship's parking brake. 🤣🤣🤣 Pike knew exactly what stopped his ship from going to warp. Rather than directly say so, he wanted to see if Sulu would figure it out until Spock decides to just be upfront about it. Look at his relaxed posture when Sulu preps the ship for warp a second time. He's not angry or disappointed. He's casually having a small moment of Captain's fun, helping a colleague instead of directly ordering him; all the while watching Sulu try to fix the problem.
Lifelong Trekkie here. I never got to see the original series as a kid, so the first movie (Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)) was my intro to the whole Trek Universe. I think Star Trek 2009 is a perfectly fine place to begin your journey, for all the reasons you yourself articulated. The new cast obviously poured their heart and souls into recreating the characters we all know and love. My personal favorite is Karl Urban as Dr "Bones" McCoy, who serves as an important counterpoise to Spock's logic in the dramatic triad of Kirk/Spock/McCoy. Urban nailed McCoy first time out of the gate. I hope you check out the OG cast (TOS, for "The Original Series", and the first six theatrical films), it will make you appreciate this movie even more.
Top 5 things about Kelvin timeline: 1-Bruce Greenwood as Pike. 2-The Engine Room, its actually the brewery in Anheizer Bush. 3-Eric Bana- An evil Ham & Cheese sandwich 4-Composer Michael Guccino, stellar work. 5- Mr. Leonard Nimoy 💯🖖
Don't let the so called "true trekkies " bully you. I started off on these movies as a kid and it's what got me to watch the older movies and shows, if you want to start on the reboot movies go ahead. Live long and prosper 🖖
17:00 According to the tie-in comics, the Narada was a regular mining ship, but the reason why it looks like that is because it was retrofitted with Borg technology by the Tal Shiar shortly before being lost in the black hole. You'll meet the Borg later (*The Next Generation* 2x16 et al) Why is it that big? No definitive answer, but I think its so the mining ship can reach around asteroids and mine them really fast, and bring home a lot of material under normal mining operation. Out of universe its because it looks cool. 35:13 It is well into interstellar space, that is exactly why Spock took the Jellyfish to warp immediately after destroying the drill, so the black hole WOULDN'T show up next to earth. Great plan!
I love the quiet vitriol with which he tells the gatekeepers of the Vulcan Science Academy "Live long and prosper". It's the Vulcan version of "Well bless your heart" for those who are in the know. The Vulcan nerve pinch or Vulcan neck pinch as some call it, I refer to as "Spock lock".
I was born in 1966, and Star Trek was the first American TV I ever saw. I have been a fan ever since. Vulcans have emotion, but they choose logic as a way of life. They appear stoic, but contain great emotion.
Tyler Perry is a self-confessed "Trekker/Trekkie". Ultra-fan of Star Trek. As a longtime Trekker, I adored this "reboot". It's an alternate-timeline. The "Kelvin-Timeline".
The comic that is a pre-cursor to this states that the Narada (Nero's Ship) was heavily upgraded by the Tal Shiar (Romulan KGB essentially) with heavy Borg tech (Borg are a species of cybernetic humanoids - nasty lot. Extremely advanced tech and antagonists through out the various series and films). Hence why a mining ship from the future looks like some sort of Eldritch nightmare with a massive cache of weapons.
When I was a kid in the late seventies, My Dad, my sister and I would watch syndicated reruns of the original show. My Sis had the biggest crush on Spock. My Dad built amazingly detailed models of ships, planes, trains and other cool stuff and of course he had a model of the Enterprise. From when the first Star Trek movie came out in 1980 all the way through to today I have watched and loved every Star Trek series and film. They aren't perfect, some of them are pretty flawed but I never cared. When this movie came out I absolutely loved it. I thought exactly what you said, that even though this is a later film it's a great two hour primer for somebody that has never seen Star Trek. This is probably my favorite Sci-Fi franchise, though sometimes I claim it's Star Wars or Babylon Five but Star Trek has by far the best and most hopeful vision of our future and I love that it aspires to be so much better than we often are. This movie and the others in the JJ Abrams series are more for pure entertainment, but a lot of Star Trek tackles and examines the issues that have tested our society for generations, prejudice, war, love, consequences of actions. There are just as many chapters that focus on science and the amazing possibilities of space travel. But in reality it always comes back to the people, the characters, the bonds that they form and the relationships between them as they grow and evolve. That's what Star Trek more often than not gets right. That's why it endures.
This series really woke up the fan base and breathed fresh air into story possibilities. As a 13 year old original Trecker (1966) I highly approved. The audience was filled with older fans and you could feel anticipation and dread of past disappointments, but there was a huge sigh of release when the opening punched us between the eyes. One of those film openings you see in the theater several times (I did)
these movies are set in a alternative timeline called kelvin universe and the original spock we see in the movie is from the original star trek from the 60 set in what fans call prime timeline where he is freind with kirk and the original uhura wich just pased away and bones and scotty and sulu and chekov
Glad you picked up on the guy in Red dying on the drop scene. A Long time running gag in Star Trek is "Red Shirts" dying on away missions. Happened all the time on the original series. 🤣
5:48 in the context of the film, the car is actually Kirk’s father’s. His step-dad, or current boyfriend of their mom, was selling it to make money for himself. Hence why young Kirk looks so emotional.
Hello Vicky!😊 Happy Thanksgiving!🦃 I have watched Star Trek since the original series. No judgement here. You have to start somewhere. The original Spock, Leonard Nimoy approved of Zachary Quinto being cast as the new Spock. Yep, it is the "Vulcan Neck Pinch", Vicky. J.J. Abrahams made it an alternate timeline as to not offend the fans of the original series. Vulcans have emotions. Karl Urban does a very good impersonation of the actor that originally play Dr. Leonard McCoy (Bones). They have just learned how to suppress them over many generations. Great reactions to your first Star Trek film, Vicky!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The casting of this movie was on point, and the primary reason this works. Highly recommend diving into the various iterations of Star Trek, although there is a lot of it.
Knowing Spock, none of us old-school fans would necessarily have shipped them either, but from Uhura's side, there are some TOS episodes that might be viewed differently in retrospect.
Anywhere you start Trek and find something you like, it’s the right place to start. I discovered this crew through the original movies and the show Star Trek: The Next Generation, later got into Star Trek: Voyager. These movies, the Kelvin alternate timeline, are fine representations of the original crew. You’ll miss out on some details and nods to the old show and movies (what you called an ad lib where Spock says, “Fascinating,” for example is a scripted call back as he says that often in the original series), but the experience will still be a fun journey for you. Welcome to the Federation, enjoy exploring the strange new worlds with us!
I think this is a perfectly fine movie! I think it fails to capture the ethos of the Star Trek series as a whole, but as a standalone film it’s not bad.
Exactly. It is great for what it is, a JJ Abrams Star Wars action film with Star Trek characters and ships. Nothing deep like TOS. Of course, if they didn't have so many flare lights, they would have had enough power to easily escape the black hole.
18:13 You have no idea how spot on you are. In the TV show, on away missions, it was always the guy in the red shirt that dies. So when you picked him and said “red” I thought for a second you were gonna say shirt, but flag works. 👍🏼
Id disagree there, it IS a great movie but it feels so different to the rest of the Trek universe that its not the best intro to it :) some folks get faaaar too carried away though Ill grant ;)
This was my first exposure to Star Trek and I quickly fell in love with the franchise. Like you said, I really enjoyed the character development and motivations of each character. That dare by Captain Pike still makes me tear up a little, so does the opening scene.
Man, people are so rude these days. People who tell you that starting Star Trek with the reboot series is "a bad idea" are just plain rude. People, let new fans enjoy the new movies if they want. Good video!
I really like this series, and have no problem with anyone watching it. But it IS still a bad idea, because the "old Spock" storyline carries much less weight when you don't know who the character is. It's not a "seniority" thing, it's a storyline/continuity thing.
It's simply because the reboots took the character depth and life lessons of Star Trek and traded them for Star Wars action and lens flare. They aren't bad in any way, but they are pale imitations of why Star Trek has been so beloved since the '60s. You don't boil down one of the most important and hopeful sci-fi IPs to ever exist into a popcorn flick comparable to The Transformers without irritating every fan. Still, I don't expect many reactors (who, let's face it, do this for a job) to spend the amount of time needed to catch up on the IP. TNG and DS9 combined encompass more than 300 episodes (178 for TNG and 173 for DS9). That's a lot of watching for a casual reactor and probably won't carry the views needed to be competitive in this entertainment genre.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY THIS MAKES ME! this movie was my introduction to the star trek universe and still remains one of my fav movie trilogies! And please react to the next two star trek movies with chris pine: into darkness (my fav) and beyond!!!❤🎉
And don't let anyone accuse you of being rude for saying that. This is the original. This is where friendship feel real. Where there is breathing room for the characters. Where the plots are often thought provoking. Yes, the original is older and has less spectacular camera. Less spectacle overall. It is far more meaningful though.
Star Trek is the gift that keeps on giving. With about a thousand TV episodes and about a dozen movies you could keep your channel filled with content for years on Trek alone. Rest assured there are plenty of entry points. Your also correct in saying Trek has one of the most die hard fanbases around. Not only do i think your going to love this franchise, i think your going to fit right in.
There are a lot of great moments in this film, but what I really love was how freaking spot on the actors nailed their original characters. Pine was James T. Kirk. Quinto was Spock. Just on down the line. I particularly loved Urban's McCoy, and it made me just shake my head and smile when I saw it in theaters.
Such a fun reaction! As a veteran Star Trek fan, it’s always exciting to see someone’s first exposure to the franchise. I would recommend (respectfully), that you watch Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan with the original cast before you watch the sequel to this movie. There are parallels between the two that you will appreciate more if you have seen Wrath of Kahn. “Let’s see what’s out there!”
Good points you made at the beginning, great entry point into introducing the universe. The movies are much more traditional action films, the shows (particularly Next Generation imo) are incredibly thoughtful episodic series, much less focused on action and more so on morality. Star Trek is meant to be a utopian vision of the future, there's no hunger, disease, inequality etc. very idealistic and hopeful, and masterfully tackles political and social issues without beating you over the head with it. The newer shows seem to forget that, but the classics are well worth the watch, for the casual viewer I recommend looking up "abridged" episode lists, as this was back when shows had 20-30 episode seasons and there are some weaker ones that can be skipped if your just looking for the strongest stories.
Beware trek bullies. Reactor "Movies With Mary" watched these movies and was inundated with rude idiots shouting that she'd watched the "wrong" ones and she felt very discouraged from exploring the Trek universe after that. So pls ignore any losers who are mean. We sane trek fans welcome all newcomers and are happy when you're having a good time.
I've seen a lot of reactors jump in with this one, and then the floodgates open saying "watch the other movies first!" and I will agree with all that! The original 6 and then the 4 Next Gen ones are all great AND lead to this. Yes it's a great jumping on point, but it's also a huge disservice to the priors which honestly, are worth watching anyway so you may as well :)
If V is going to watch all the new Star Trek movies, she could watch Star Trek 2 (of the original cast) first for the obvious reason. But no spoilers here...
@@vinnycordeiro Even just the fact that in this one, Spock comes from the priors, so it makes sense (as someone reacting to stuff unseen) to watch them too, may as well (plus, they are worth it!)
Thanks, Vicki - One of the best "new to Trek" reactions I've seen. Glad you enjoyed it. There are some great characters and stories in this Universe. And as a long-time fan of Trek, I was very impressed and pleased with this film when I saw it at the cinema.
In lieu of requesting you watch the original TV show from the 60s, I highly recommend Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It’s a modern show that I think effectively captures the utopic and adventurous spirit of this franchise.
Agree. And there are far fewer episodes from each year, only 10 each year. If you would like to watch two original series episodes from the 60s City on the Edge of Forever and Amok Time are consider one the better episodes.

More power to you, but everything done with Star Trek after this movie was less meaningful, dumbed down, aggroed up, tone deaf and miserable to me.
I love how Spock delivers the most logical and polite sounding "F*CK YOU" with his "Live Long and Prosper" line at 7:53 it's fantastic.
Vulcans are actually very passionate. The overwhelming majority just choose and train to repress their emotions in favor of Vulcan logic, which led their society out of a dark period.
Makes me want to watch ST:Enterprise again, especially Azati Prime & In a Mirror Darkly.
@@pershing3346 Who didn't love T'pol?
Yeah people often mistake Vulcans as being devoid of emotion, when really, they're even more emotional than we are and suppressing that is a means of survival physically, mentally and spiritually.
@@beetlebob4675 Even the writers on occasion, which can be annoying.
I enjoyed your insight & appraisal immensely. ; )
You're a sellout! Don't even comment! Stop even trying to justify this stupid reboot! Shame on you!
Well, there were episodes where a red shirt didn't die. In thise cases, Shatner-Kirk had his shirt ripped off instead.
Red is not only Security but also Engineering. TNG and later series switched Red and Yellow.
@@isaackellogg3493 I knew I was forgetting something (Engineering in this case), thanks.
In TOS it might even be the same red shirt. Curly haired dude died a few times I believe... Also in the Star Trek 25th Anniversary game if you decided to do something dangerous your red shirt would jump in "allow me to move that rock, Captain" and die for you.
Stromtrooper misses every shot, red shirt dies anyway.

We all float down here. Oh, sorry… different franchise. I’ll let myself out…
This movie's not great (not bad, just stupid but charming fun), but I'll forever love it for getting so many people into the rest of Trek. It seems like half the people I find online reacting to, reviewing or otherwise talking about Star Trek started with this movie and liked it enough to go back and watch the earlier stuff and often keep going into the current shows.
Its not. Its not even part of the same universe! How dare you!

If I remember correctly from the novelization, the car belonged to his father. He didn’t want his stepfather to have it.
I just like that Thor and Cameron From House made us cry like babies at the start of the film.
I honestly loved this reboot of the series! No one can make me hate it. And yes I even liked Into Darkness! Hope to see you watch the next two!

Well, SNW is not the same universe as this, so lore, etc. is different than these movies. haha

Pike knew exactly what stopped his ship from going to warp.
Yes, exactly! Gives us a bit of insight to Pike's demeanor - the lighter side, not the "dare you to do better" side.

Great plan!

I just don’t understand what’s so unbelievable to her that he is in the movie
The comic that is a pre-cursor to this states that the Narada (Nero's Ship) was heavily upgraded by the Tal Shiar (Romulan KGB essentially) with heavy Borg tech (Borg are a species of cybernetic humanoids - nasty lot. Extremely advanced tech and antagonists through out the various series and films). Hence why a mining ship from the future looks like some sort of Eldritch nightmare with a massive cache of weapons.
Tyler Perry and many other actors and actresses make cameos in the Star Trek Universe because they are big fans of Star Trek.

When you see some of the original cast movies in episodes you'll see how truly amazing this casting and acting was at matching their characteristics.
I think the most popular one is number 2 The Wrath of Khan. An absolute must see.
Meh
@@sean---the-other-one Haha! There's always gotta be one. Or, excuse me, the OTHER one. 😆

🤣
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY THIS MAKES ME! this movie was my introduction to the star trek universe and still remains one of my fav movie trilogies! And please react to the next two star trek movies with chris pine: into darkness (my fav) and beyond!!!❤🎉
Well, as long as it gets you into the universe, I suppose it`s a start. But nothing is better than Trek 1966-2005.
There is no way they'd hand over command to a dude one week out of the academy. Insane.
Kirk has the academic rizz
It's Nu Trek. Professionalism isn't something they do anymore. It's all narssism, insubordination and crying about their fefes!
Technically 'they' (Captain Pike) gave command to Spock. Having said that; Spock was also pretty fresh out of the academy...
I have no problem with starting here, because it now peaks your interest and what a journey the Star Trek universe is.
i'm in a mental health facility, seeing someone like my favorite thing really helped my mood today
That away!
7:48 Some of you may not realize it but on Vulcan that was the greatest Yo Mamma joke in the last 1000 years.
After the reboot trilogy you must take the journey through TOS and TNG!
Poor Mary
Shut up and quit bitching
Thanks, Vicki - One of the best "new to Trek" reactions I've seen. Glad you enjoyed it. There are some great characters and stories in this Universe. And as a long-time fan of Trek, I was very impressed and pleased with this film when I saw it at the cinema.
I think you’re right. This is a great introduction to the whole Star Trek thing.
Great reaction Vicky! This is probably my favorite Star Trek movie. You showed the same emotions I did when watching it the first time. 👍👸❤
New subscriber because of Star Trek. 🥰👍
I love that this whole timeline is named after a river in Glasgow 😀
In lieu of requesting you watch the original TV show from the 60s, I highly recommend Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It’s a modern show that I think effectively captures the utopic and adventurous spirit of this franchise.

Agree. And there are far fewer episodes from each year, only 10 each year. If you would like to watch two original series episodes from the 60s City on the Edge of Forever and Amok Time are consider one the better episodes.
