Funfact: In the starting sequence you see Randy Pausch running through the video before the screen goes live. He held one of the most famous lectures in the world most likely: The Last Lecture....look it up. Oh and yeah..I named my son Tiberius because I want him to take 1 thing to heart: I dont believe in a no win scenario.
As Scotty was raving how he was able to beam people from two places at one time the man sitting next to him at the controls was Chris Doohan, son of James Doohan, the original Mr. Scott. Chris starred as Montgomery Scott in the widely acclaimed fan series Star Trek Continues which you can find here on RUclips. It's just like watching the original series.
The crew member who said "Captain, we have visual" was Randy Pausch. He was a Star Trek fan and Professor at Carnegie Mellon. He wrote a book, called the Last Lecture during his battle with pancreatic cancer. I read this book in middle school. He went on a book tour during his fight to promote the book. He was able to make a cameo in this film, and he donated his money to charity. Sadly he passed away, but his memory lives on in the film and in life.
Bruce Greenwood is terrific, but he is now my second favorite Captain Pike. Anson Mount is just too damn good in the role on Strange New Worlds-he’s become my second favorite Star Trek captain behind only Patrick Stewart.
Cassie said after watching Nemesis (paraphrasing) ''I'm going to take a break from Star Trek now''. lol That was only 10 days ago. She's becoming a full blown Trekkie. To which I say WELCOME TO THE CLUB!
Deep Space Nine, is arguably the best written series as a whole. A couple of bumpy spots in the beginning, but they developed their characters for good and ill. Lower Decks is also a surprisingly moving series, wrapped in jokes and hijinks.
Low-er decks! Lo-wer decks! And as much as I like the show, she needs a bit more watching to fully grasp it fully. The next to most recent episode had cameos from characters in 3 different Trek series that she hasn't seen, for example.
- Personally I was never a really big fan of DS9, I really liked some of the characters like Worf, Dax, Odo, Quark and O'Brian but I didn't overly enjoy the general storyline, I found it kind of boring that as a space station they rarely went anywhere other than the station and was not a big fan of Sisko.
My college GF was very much into literature and poetry, but we started watching TNG with a group of friends when it first aired, and she loved it. It doesn't surprise me at all that you enjoy the relationships of the crews.
The Kelvin-timeline is entirely alternate reality, from the moment the Kelvin is destroyed onwards. The supernova in the prime timeline occurs in 2387, which is 8 years after Nemesis, which takes place in 2379. So thankfully they found a way to do the new trilogy without really interfering with any of classic trek, which still exists in the original timeline.
It'd have to be a bit before, given that Kirk was (in Prime) born in Iowa- so something needed to happen prior to the Kelvin incident to keep Winona Kirk from being in Iowa (and it doesn't look like the Narada's incursion was too close to Earth)
Congratulations to your extreme commitment of watching so much Star Trek ahead of this for your personal internal goal to appreciate and "earn" the lore. As much as so many have been telling you to "watch this and watch that" I think you've done an incredible thing here Cassie and if you take a break after it all that's totally understandable. I'll just suggest on any of your Star Trek posts that to finish off TNG, consider ONLY season 3 of Picard as I'm sure you've heard dozens of times. You won't be disappointed.
- I don't know if she actually watched it or not, I have a bad memory, BUT if she is going to plump up some of her Trek knowledge "All Good Things" is definitely a must watch, one of my favorite episodes.
100% agree. It's a different take which is needed otherwise it's just recycled unoriginal content. I would really like them to start expanding though and move past the next generation era into a new one.
My problem with this is mostly the villain. He’s too over the top. He’d make an average superhero movie villain say “wtf” with his scene-chewing evil. The movie could’ve been better even while keeping the more action style Abrams was going for.
If you want Federation Expanded Story, you got "DS9". If you want Adventures then i recommend "Voyager". If you want Federation backstory/history, then you got "Enterprise". The next film is also very good.
I saw this at the Hollywood Bowl the day after Anton Yelchin's passing. These was nothing as beautiful as watching this under the beautiful stars with a live orchestra. So glad that you enjoyed it.
This was Chris Hemworth big screen debut, so that's why he has such a small role. I think it was also in 2009 that he was cast as Thor, which debut in cinemas two years later.
Although it is a prequel, it's an alternate timeline from the moment Nero appeared. Johnathan Archer was the first captain of the NX-01 USS Enterprise (The series, Enterprise). He had a beagle on board with him. Evidently, Scotty had an incident with it in this timeline.
Some said only Shatner could play Kirk. This was an interesting way of explaining WHY every character is - different. Some by a little, some by more. And it echoes back to an Original episode, where Kirk etc. were back in 1930s. They "had to" let asomeone die, or the Enterprise would no longer exist.
Easter Egg: R2D2 can be seen as one of the floating debris after the Enterprise arrives in the aftermath of the Romulan attack on the Federation fleet.
I grew up on reruns of the original. I was in high school, when Fox became a major network, becoming the fourth, adding to the original 3, CBS,ABC,NBC from the 50's. Cops and Star Trek The Next Generation were the 2 flagship shows. I very much enjoyed Star Trek Voyager from the 90's. The story line was really cool.
In the normal timeline, when the Kelvin wasn't attacked, George Kirk's wife didn't go into labor until they got back to Earth. And George lived long enough to see his son become captain of the Enterprise. The prime timeline Kirk, having grown up with his father, was a much more disciplined person, rather than this one who grew up without a father and ended up a delinquent.
Simon Pegg’s wife is Scottish. That’s why his accent is so on point! Anton Yelchin’s (RIP) first language was Russian. The Russians do not actually pronounce V’s like W’s (I don’t know why they did that in TOS), so Anton really had to adjust his performance to make that happen!
I stood right next to Chris Pine’s dad and didn’t recognize him for the longest time because he was shorter than I imagined, frail had a beard and long hair. Looked nothing like on CHIPS
Robert Pine was great as Sgt. Getraer on CHiPs. I’m seeing him listed in various places as either 5’9” or 5’10”, but I’m sure he’s gotten shorter w age. He’s 83 now.
When Simon Pegg (Scotty) was in the transporter room, the man sitting next to him in the red shirt is Chris Doohan, the son of James Doohan, the OG Scotty.
As a lifelong Star Trek fan whose parents wouldn't allow him to watch TOS on its original run, this reboot series is a worthy successor. Live long and prosper, everyone!
Fans said they felt Kirk should die on the bridge. The producers just didn't realize we didn't mean THAT kind of bridge! We meant the Enterprise Bridge! D'oh!
The older Spock came from the original Star Trek universe in 2387 (eight years after Star Trek Nemesis), he traveled 129 years into the past (2258) but it was the new alternate timeline created when Nero’s ship arrived in 2233.
@@JavierSoto-t6z Op has seen both and enjoyed both. Most people who hate on the new ones dislike it because of how different it is from the original series. To have watched the original series, especially when it aired, you'd have to be considerably old. Adding their age in this context makes sense imo
@JavierSoto-t6z none. I'm not saying that their age adds more weight to their opinion; neither did they. I'm just noting that it makes sense for them to include the fact that they were old enough to have seen the original series when it aired, because people tend to assume that fans of the reboots have never seen TOS.
19:44 "Is the parking brake on?" is actually a clever prank from Captain Pike. When he asks Sulu the question, this prompts Spock to ask if the external inertial dampener is engaged; or loosely translated, "the outside device that stops the ship from moving/drifting." It really is the parking brake of the ship. Pike knew exactly what stopped his ship from going to warp. Rather than directly say so, he wanted to see if Sulu would figure it out until Spock decides to just be upfront about it. Look at his relaxed posture when Sulu preps the ship for warp a second time. He's not angry or disappointed. He's casually having a small moment of Captain's fun, helping a colleague instead of directly ordering him; all the while watching Sulu try to fix the problem. It's also worth mentioning, if Sulu hadn't forgotten to disengage the parking brake, the Enterprise would have arrived at Vulcan at the same time as the rest of the fleet and possibly would have gotten destroyed.

Unfortunately Karl Urban is why they've never gotten around to a next episode which we really really need in order for many of us to get closure on the tragic loss of Anton Yelchin.
@@davidrichards6509 We all know why there hasn't been another, and isn't because of Urban! Into Darkness was a disaster and Beyond was commercial flop!
Believe that this is one of the "best remake movies" in the series of Star Trek..it literally reintroduce us to most of all the OG characters but with all new casting which is done very well along with all new storyline but it still has elements of pass movies which actually relates all the way back to te OG TV series..this one has so much better special effects than all of the earlier movie versions of Star Trek..the next two that actually follows this one just seem to get even better with both storyline and even more great casting with new characters.
Just to note, special effects are not the same as visual effects. Special effects are all the practical effects that are present during principal filming (e.g.: squibs, wirework, and stunts). Visual effects are shots that are composited during postproduction (models, matte paintings, and CGI).
I remember in a livestream unboxing when I and couple others suggested Star trek in the comments and Cassie said she wanted to watch this film. She knew nothing really about the franchise apart from the usual pop culture stuff and her vague memories of her father watching tng episodes when she was growing up. Thankfully for us she embraced the advice of her trusted Trekkie patreons and in search of a little context, she did a huge deep dive which I hope she's found really rewarding. 3rd Dec 2023 Cassie brought star trek to the channel. Her Rocky and Bond series were wonderful and so I knew we were in for a treat with this too. We're over a year into this journey and it'll be all over very soon. Well said. I 100% concur. This has been a wonderful ride, re-experiencing Trek through Cassie's eyes and watching her evolve from a novice to a full-on Trek fan. She picks up on all the references, she knows the quotes, and she loves the characters deeply. Just like us. There is a reason she is my favorite reaction channel. @@peterkazmir I'm guessing ds9 and voyager are off the table but Picard is a different matter because of Cassie's affinity for her Captain. It will probably be a very long time in the future though
You're not cheating. This isn't really a reboot. This is a fork in time that hard-core Trek fans can't argue with because of how it was done. It splits the timelines cleanly in a way that opens up the new universe. Enjoy the ride.
When redstone investments split and Star Trek went to CBS, it was picked up by Bad Robot and JJ "Sabotage" Abrams for this. Feels like Star Trek by 12 year olds after they ate a 2 pound bag of candy but, yeah if you just take it as some film, a "portion of entertainment"....not bad.
Everyone when I was a kid always called Star Trek 'the losers saga' and you were mocked for liking it. Until this movie came out. Some of the old fanboys may not like this movie, but it did bring a ton of new fans to the series.
I saw this at the theater and was blown away by the casting too. My favourite cast member spent about a minute on screen. In 2013 I was covering the Tribeca Film Festival as a red carpet photographer, when I met an actress promoting a film called "Raze". My buddy and I interviewed and photographed the cast and producer, and were subsequently invited to the wrap party by the producer. I got a chance to talk for some time with her, and I told her I was a big fan of her sci-fi series "Continuum", and told her that I remembered her from her first TV starring role in a series called "The Inside". She was incredibly sweet and gracious, and posed for a photo with me (I got my buddy to use my camera) - probably my favourite photo I ever took with an actress. It wasn't until 2 or 3 years later that I realized that she, , was the green girl that Kirk was making out with in Uhura's room! A year later we interviewed Patrick Stewart and I got a photo with him, too!
I love this movie. This was my first experience of Star Trek. Starfleet, and the Star Trek vision of a post-hate, post-scarcity future is so beautiful.
Vulcans have strict cultural taboos about non-familial physical touching (which makes sense on a planet of touch telepaths) so no, they don’t really do that.😂
I appreciate that they did this reboot while still respecting the original series by not just saying it never happened or that the canon didn’t matter. They just say “This is different and a different take and these are the reasons why”. The next movie is… not my favorite, but I like this one and the third one 😅
When this first came out I was doubtful they could reinvent such loved iconic characters but they did it! Eric Bana as the evil enemy was excellent, and of course Leonard Nimoy returning for a chat with his younger self was lovely to see.
Meh, we took it because we all know why they made it. They refused them to make a real starter film so they made the kelvin timeline. It is an appetizer movie.
Anton lived in Los Angeles, California, until his death on the evening of June 19, 2016, outside his LA home, when his parked Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backward on his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick pillar and security fence. This was due to badly designed shifter that indicated park when it was in neutral. This death, along with reports of other near-misses, resulted in a recall of that model.
The recall came very late. A number of people had been injured or killed under similar circumstances, and the auto company blew them off until there was a high profile victim.
"Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one." - Fight Club

@@unropednope4644because he went back in time and had plenty of time to WARN ROMULUS so they had 129 years to do something about it.

Anton Yelchin, the actor that played Chekov, died in 2016 when his SUV smashed him into a driveway gate.
Very sad😢

Anton's parents won a wrongful death suit against Jeep in 2018 as a result of the flawed transmission design. It also lead to new regulations making all new cars shift to park automatically when the driver door is opened.
William Shatner actually congratulated Chris Pine on his portrayal of Kirk.
Interestingly, Chris Pine seemed to channel Shatner during an interrogation scene in the first "Wonder Woman" movie.

Cassie: Your face when Spock and Uhura kiss; 😮😮
She's been wanting a lot more kissing and romance in Trek since the beginning lol.
When Spock turned down admittance into the Vulcan Science Academy, he managed to make "Live long and prosper" come off as "F You"
Don't you give me that sarcastic Vulcan salute!
I'm sure it's been said before, but I'm glad you built up to this rather than jumping right in. Get it!!
The casting in this movie was spectacular! Chris Pine NAILS the young, cocky Kirk!
Love Bruce Greenwood as Admiral Pike
The wheelchair was a nice touch, too!
I like the newer Star Trek films, no matter what others say. And I've been a Star Trek fan for over 30 years.
Hi, I completely agree with you, and I go all the way back as well. I predict Cassie will absolutely LOVE these movies. - Thomas
@@maxducoudray”hi Christopher I’m Nero” is my favourite delivery of any villain line ever.

Watch the series Heroes, that’s where I first saw this Spock’s actor.
This movie was such a mind trip. A Trek, one could say...
Ah, but was it the same beagle?
Star Trek Voyager was the series I fell in love with and remains my favorite. I hope you get there one day!
Yes, Edith Keeler . . .
"Oh it's a prequel" no it's worse 😂😂😂😂 it's an alternative timeline 😂😂😂
Simon Pegg’s wife is Scottish. That’s why his accent is so on point!
Anton Yelchin’s (RIP) first language was Russian. The Russians do not actually pronounce V’s like W’s (I don’t know why they did that in TOS), so Anton really had to adjust his performance to make that happen!
I stood right next to Chris Pine’s dad and didn’t recognize him for the longest time because he was shorter than I imagined, frail had a beard and long hair. Looked nothing like on CHIPS
Not to mention the old late-night classical music infomercials.
Not to mention Robert Pine was also in Star Trek Voyager and Enterprise
Robert Pine was great as Sgt. Getraer on CHiPs. I’m seeing him listed in various places as either 5’9” or 5’10”, but I’m sure he’s gotten shorter w age. He’s 83 now.

As a lifelong Star Trek fan whose parents wouldn't allow him to watch TOS on its original run, this reboot series is a worthy successor. Live long and prosper, everyone!
CASSIE, try VOYAGER, female captain and I'm sure a trekker out there will clue you in to the important episodes just like you did with TNG.
I love that Simon Pegg as Scotty wasn't spoiled for you, I think we were all waiting to see what your reaction would be.
Hey Generations, did you see that? Now that's how you kill off a Kirk.
Not only is Simon Pegg IN Star Trek he also co-wrote Star Trek Beyond/Pine 3 one of the best in the franchise that VERY much has a TOS episode vibe
Simon Pegg also appeared in Star Wars Episode 7

Just bc you’re old doesn’t mean your opinion has more weight .
@@JavierSoto-t6z
Op has seen both and enjoyed both. Most people who hate on the new ones dislike it because of how different it is from the original series. To have watched the original series, especially when it aired, you'd have to be considerably old. Adding their age in this context makes sense imo
@saltysyd99 what difference does it make when you watch it ?
@JavierSoto-t6z none. I'm not saying that their age adds more weight to their opinion; neither did they. I'm just noting that it makes sense for them to include the fact that they were old enough to have seen the original series when it aired, because people tend to assume that fans of the reboots have never seen TOS.

Young Spock is Zachary Quinto. Prior to this he was known for the show Heroes
RIP Anton Yelchin aka Chekov.
This movie is a lot of fun. I loved the cast, especially Karl Urban as Bones. He nails the character so well.
You can't TEASE deep space nine if you aren't serious you're gonna break my heart 😢
The actor playing Spock in this was also an excellent villain in the TV show Hereos. A series you definitely should watch

Believe that this is one of the "best remake movies" in the series of Star Trek..it literally reintroduce us to most of all the OG characters but with all new casting which is done very well along with all new storyline but it still has elements of pass movies which actually relates all the way back to te OG TV series..this one has so much better special effects than all of the earlier movie versions of Star Trek..the next two that actually follows this one just seem to get even better with both storyline and even more great casting with new characters.
same I loved this too
Just to note, special effects are not the same as visual effects. Special effects are all the practical effects that are present during principal filming (e.g.: squibs, wirework, and stunts). Visual effects are shots that are composited during postproduction (models, matte paintings, and CGI).
As a person who had the love of my life send a message earlier today - she's 25 years shoulda woulda. I'll admit I'm emotionally comprised.
For all those subscribers that aren't really invested in the Star trek franchise, I can't imagine how you've put up with us hijacking the channel for so long so thank you guys so much 😂😉

I love it when Jim Kirk slaps Spock on the shoulder. It's such an "Earth" kind of thing. I don't think they do that on Vulcan. - Thomas

They just say “This is different and a different take and these are the reasons why”. The next movie is… not my favorite, but I like this one and the third one 😅
Into Darkness, indeed...
(Literally saw it before release at Paramount Studios- and was so disappointed when I walked off the lot...)
When this first came out I was doubtful they could reinvent such loved iconic characters but they did it! Eric Bana as the evil enemy was excellent, and of course Leonard Nimoy returning for a chat with his younger self was lovely to see.

To everyone who thinks this film is not Star Trek: always remember the Vulcan philosophy IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations).🖖
Good performances. Bad plot. Overall fun, but not a top tier Star Trek because of ignoring the soul of Trek.
Well, with that kind of reasoning you can slap the Star Trek label onto virtually anything.

If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one."
