In the original comic, The Mask was much more violent and nihilistic, it was Jim Carrey and the director Chuck Russell who brought in the homages to classic Looney Tunes…

Fun fact: the comic book this was loosely based on... it was R-rated. Like, _really_ R-rated. People getting dismembered and stuff. It was a really interesting take on a pretty easy concept, and the movie was nothing like it. It could've failed miserably since it's not even close to the source material, but it became an instant classic.

I’d say the most important distinction is that The Mask in comics is more a dark horror comic than a comedic one where the actions have often shocking consequences whereas the movie takes the basic premise and turns it into a Jim Carey movie. Both valid but very different

"Can't make the scene if you don't have the green, I better make a little stop." "Waste not, want not." "Look Ma, I'm road kill, Ha Ha Haa!" "It's party time, P-A-R-T-Why? Because I gotta!" This is a very well done film that mixes both serious and comedy. This film shows the whole breadth of Jim Carreys talent. Also, note the great Ben Stein plays the psychiatrist in the film. Stein was an icon appearing in films in the 1990s. He began with "Bueller, Bueller". 1994 was a big year for Carrey. He also did Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura. You should definitely see him in another serious role "The Majestic" a great 2001 drama where he plays a Blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter in 1951 California, who lost his memory. A great romantic drama. He stars with "Walking Dead's Laurie Holden, along with the late David Ogden Stires, the late Martin Landau, the late James Whitmore and the late Hal Holbrook. A wonderfully written film from Frank Darabont, who directed "Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile". Thank you for the reactions Cassie.

01:51: Yes, it was. Good Bad Flicks has an "Exploring" video on this movie. The production was looking for the right actress, found model Cameron Diaz, everyone knew she was absolutely perfect, they offered her the role. . . and she said no. She wasn't really interested in moving from modeling to acting. They had to work hard to convince her to take the role, then to convince the studio to hire her. The rest, as they say, is history.
14:35: "I was hoping we'd have a cool dance number!"
Oh, hold on to your hat, sister!
24:22: That's, I think the, greatest concept in the movie. The idea of masks, wearing metaphorical masks to present the person we think will serve us best among others, and how wearing a literal mask can free us to be ourselves, because we hide our faces. Stanley's kind of a goofy guy, so the Mask unleashes all of that, and he becomes a Looney Tune. Dorian is a monster, so the Mask turns him into a monster.

There is a sequel to this film starring Jamie Kennedy that was made a decade later. It’s really weird, Jamie Kennedy finds the mask and gets his wife pregnant while wearing it and the child is born with the mask’s powers. Alan Cumming plays Loki who is looking for the mask and his father Odin is played by Bob Hoskins (who was Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit). The only returning actor from the first one is Ben Stein who was the guy that Stanley visited to get his professional expertise on the mask.

This movie introduced me to Richard Jeni (Stanley’s best friend), a hilarious stand up who unfortunately passed away in 2007 due to suicide. If you’ve never watched or listened to his standup, you should. I haven’t listened for a while so I don’t know how well it holds up but I used to play one of his specials on repeat as a teen and I could probably recite most of it from memory with a little prompting.

The source material for this movie is A LOT darker. In the original comics, the mask is evil. There are several wearers through the series and most of them start out using it for more or less altruistic reasons but after a while they basically just become serial killers that make cartoony jokes out of their victims. I much prefer the way the Jim Carrey version went.
