Look out for the Centauri (they got that right by season 3) ... and it would be interesting to know what you think of the "main plotline", because IMO it "applies to you" ... kinda. (And the source of destruction of western society.)

When people laid eyes on Cameron Diaz for the first time in this film, it was essentially the same effect as when they had first laid eyes on Geena Davis twelve years earlier in "Tootsie" (1982). Everybody just understandably assumed that there was no way that this person could possibly NOT go on to become a big star, regardless of her acting ability. 🤔 Well, at least every GUY certainly assumed that.😜👍

I watched this in the theater 7 times when I was 17 years old. Today I'm 47, and I still watch Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry, Tex Avery classics, etc. You don't have to be a kid to appreciate cartoons as well as The Mask, you just have to have some kid in your heart.

    • @Armaldo468

Well said. Can’t beat the old school classic cartoons, man. Cannot. I’m 30 (a couple months from 31 as of this writing), by the way. This movie is almost exactly my age. Some of those cartoons are almost three times my age (and even slightly more than three times, in the case of the OG Disney stuff-Mickey Mouse is friggin’ 96 this year!), and I’d genuinely argue that the art and heart of the classic ‘toons can’t be matched by most of the tryhard crap out there these days. Granted, drastically different styles and types cannot truly be accurately compared, but I’m still going to show my bias anyway. There’s something about watching someone step on a rake or shovel and whack themself in the face (and end up with a ridiculous imprint of said rake or shovel) that is simply timeless. Cheesy memes and forced narratives expire; pure physical comedy and all forms of irony do not. Elmer Fudd quietly imploring the audience to “be vewy vewy quiet” as he’s “hunting wabbits” before very loudly giggling about it like a lunatic is priceless 60+ years later. Bubbles of the PowerPuff Girls randomly morphing her face into an internet meme that had already been extinct for several years should have never even made it to the drawing board. (To be clear, the *original* PowerPuff Girls was incredible; the reboot or whatever in the mid-2010’s was an atrocity. One clip of cute little Bubbles pulling that hideous “me gusta” meme face and screaming “no me gusta!” told me all I needed to know. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, consider yourself lucky. God I’m sick of nostalgia junkies getting all *sad* about things not being around anymore and begging for them to be brought back/remade. It’s ALWAYS a disaster-especially since the original heart and vision of a past project cannot be recreated or recaptured. Know what else you get when you try to bring back dead things without the proper recipe? Zombies. Ugly, shambling, mindless walking corpses. Same concept.)

    "Ooh, somebody stop me!"
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Cameron Diaz.
Music Enthusiast Fact: The producers hated the "Cuban Pete" musical number and wanted it gone. They insisted that it was too long, not funny and dragged, but test audiences loved it so much that they kept it in.
Lost In Adaptation Fact: Based on a Dark Horse comic book series of the same name, which frequently comprised very dark horror stories on how the mask would murder people with cartoon antics. Chuck Russell has said that the movie script started off in that tone before being transformed as a vehicle for Jim Carrey's unique comedy.
Live Action Cartoon Fact: Chuck Russell revealed that a lot of money was saved on special effects after Jim Carrey was cast. Carrey's body movements were so flexible and cartoonish, they didn't see the need to enhance them digitally. As befits Stanley's obsession with cartoons, The Mask acts like various cartoon characters, most notably the Tasmanian Devil (traveling as a tornado), Pepe Le Pew (romancing Tina (Cameron Diaz) in the park), Bugs Bunny ("dying" in the gangster's arms), and Tex Avery's Wolf (seeing Tina in the nightclub).
Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Charlie's (Richard Jeni) car is a 1970 Cadillac DeVille Convertible [68367F]. Eddie's (Denis Forest) car is a 1990 Lincoln Continental. Kelloway's (Peter Riegert) car is a 1986 Ford LTD Crown Victoria. The loaner car from the mechanic is a Studebaker. Two different models are used: the car that Stanley (Jim Carrey) picks it up is a Studebaker Commander State 4-door sedan (1951) and in the bridge scene the car that falls apart is a Studebaker Land Cruiser (1950); the difference is noticeable in the bullet nose fitting and the grille.

As an adult, the Stanley Ipkiss character is my favourite and seems a lot more like who Jim Carrey is or was back then when he's not having to constantly perform for people in public. The character is a lot more interesting. He's still funny, but he's more human and I think that was his audition for more serious roles like The Truman Show, The Majestic and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (my favourite). He also had a highly underrated turn as the narrator in the fantastic movie Simon Birch, about a kid with a terminal illness and his friend. He plays the kid's friend as an adult.

This is based on a comicbook series & they where originally more darker, grim & violent.
It wasn't only Stanley Ipkiss who wore the mask, but different people also, such as Lt. Kellaway (who would basically become the main character because after his experience wearing the mask he goes on a search trying to find it & end it, but there's always a new person who gets its hand on it).
The Mask has the personality of Dorian, but with a more twisted humor & not Looney Tunes cartoon humor. He looks like the Jim Carrey version, but with a larger head. He's not even called The Mask, instead he's called The Big Head Killer.
If they ever decide to reboot The Mask, I would actually wanna see a direct adaptation of the original comics. Done right, of course.
After the movie they made a cartoon show based of the movie. It got 3 seasons & it was actually really good.
And like you mentioned earlier, Peggy actually becomes one of the main protagonists in the show. The only character not showing up is Cameron Diaz's character.

I first became aware of Jim Carrey in a comedy variety show from the late '80's called _In Living Color._ I think this did the lion's share of the work needed to bring him to national attention in time for the movie _Ace Ventura: Pet Detective._ His performances on both of these platforms went a long way to cement him in place, nationally, as a _comedic_ figure where he lived quite comfortably through _The Mask,_ _Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls,_ and _Liar Liar._
In '98, though, he started to expand his range a little. _The Truman Show_ is a movie with a _few_ funny parts, but mainly, it's a drama. _Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind_ is a sci-fi romance. In each case, Jim Carrey slips into the part naturally. He's an actor with range.

Well, I mean, as far as anyone else is concerned, the guy's just an eccentric who likes to wear a mask when he dances. People are prepared to forgive a _lot_ when a guy knows his way around the dance floor.

Natalie the Red looking very beautiful as always!🌹 I think you ladies would appreciate a Jim Carrey film where special effects and CGI weren't used as heavily. You might appreciate his physical humor more in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" (1994). Great reactions to this Jim Carrey comedy, Ladies!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

This was before the marvel movies. Loki as the trickster, used to mess with the other gods and at one point had a blind god kill another with an arrow of Hawthorne, and Tor hunted Loki for a long time before the catch and punishment. Bound by dwarven chains, with a serpent’s venom dripping on his face, but Loki,’s wife held a bowl to catch the drops, and the reason we get earthquakes is his thrashing when she has to go and empty the bowl. Folklore.

Over the top but what a great film, showcasing the talent Jim Carrey has...his third best role to me. For a first big role Cameron pulled it off effortlessly. (In my opinion, Jim did some of his best work in “The Majestic”, my favorite film of his)
