My mom just met Shelley Duvall at a gas station around her home town in Texas a couple months ago. My mom saw her in her car packed with stuff as if she was living out of her car. She didn't recognize her at first and gave her $20. Once she recognized her, Shelley Duvall asked if my mom wanted her money back and she declined. I really feel for this woman. She was so great as Olive Oyl in the live action Popeye movie with Robin Williams. The shit she's had to go through just breaks my heart.

Unfortunately, since making of The Shining, Shelley has had major psychological issues. Kubrick treated her very badly, even urging everyone on set to do the same, which constantly left her on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Kubrick went too far and Shelley ended up temporarily in a psychiatric hospital.

The Shining is a masterpiece of filmmaking. As you noticed, it's scary even during scenes when nothing is happening. Some of it is the cinematography, and some of it is the sound. Stanley Kubrick really knew how to manipulate the audience.
Edit: "Here's Johnny" is a reference to The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. It was a late night talk show that was on every weekday for almost 30 years. The announcer would always introduce him at the start of the show with the words, "Heeeerrrrrre's Johnny!" Everyone in the U.S. at the time knew about this, but since Johnny Carson left the show in 1992, younger people don't get the reference.

The Overlook Hotel in the book is inspired by The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado where Stephen King stayed on vacation. He heard about the supposedly haunted guestroom and its history and that inspired him to write The Shining. In the movie, Kubrick shot the daylight exteriors at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon. The interiors were on a sound stage in England and modeled after the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite Park in California. The two lodges do not line up architecturally and so that adds to the uneasiness of the Overlook.

All of this is urban legend. And even some of the lies are mixed up here.
-Scatman had to do the kitchen scene with Danny 127 times. Why? Because Scatman came to set without learning his lines.
-The bat scene was shot a lot of times, around 100, but that was over three weeks of shooting time. If they worked 7-days a week, that's less than 5 takes per day. She was never 'out of the loop' regarding production...she made suggestions, gave her opinion, and watched every take just after shooting it to give her input. Also, being filmed is an actors job. What's the problem with a large number of takes?
-At one point Kubrick did tell the crew to ignore her. She complained that she caught her hair on the window frame in the bathroom set, and pulled out 'hunks of hair'. She lied...and told Kubrick lying like that 'helps her'. He told them to ignore her complaint so they didn't try and fix the non-existent problem with the window.
-Shelly knew what was going to happen with the axe, how do you think they would have rehearsed the scene otherwise? Or the multiple takes? That just doesn't make sense.
These are all unsubstantiated lies about a person who is dead, and so can't defend himself. Watch the behind the scenes documentary and you can see all the claims fade away.

This movie along with The Exorcist, Pet Cemetery and The Omen are the cornerstones of horror movies. This movie is so amazing, the hotel itself is a character and it is what enhances Danny's ability. Also in the book Jack Torrence also shines, the movie doesn't really goes into it but at least we se the scenes in the ballroom and the one where the hotel opens up the door for him. I highly recommend the documentary Room 237. Its a great behind the scene look at the movie plus it goes over several theories and meanings behind certain things, all very interesting stuff.

The trick to get out of EVERY maze is to follow along ONE wall _(doesn't matter if it's the one to your right or to your left - just be consistent)._
No matter how many turns and corners the maze may have - simply follow one wall and you'll get out eventually.

One of the iconic Horror films. You dont really get the full understanding of the movie until the last scene with the picture of Jack at the hotel in July 4 1921. He was the re=incarnated hotel caretaker. The demon Grady possessed him again.

the way they were shooting danny riding around on his big wheel (and many other shots as well) was the steadicam. the camera was attached to a harness that the camera operator wore, and moved with them, though without any shaking or blurriness. (before to achieve movement you had to put a camera on a large and cumbersome dolly, which would have been impossible for many of the shots in the shining, or shoot handheld, which was rarely used in big-time film production because of its supposedly amateurish look.) it was a fairly new technology at the time, and the shining was one of the first films to make extensive use of it, though now it's just a standard film technique you'll see constantly.

Personally I liked the sequel but it bombed big time in theaters. Interestingly, Stephen King HATED Kubrick's version of "The Shining" and it has become a classic in the horror genre, while he LOVED "Doctor Sleep" and it bombed. Ewan McGregor is excellent in everything he does, and the supporting cast was pretty good too. I say everyone who likes Kubrick's "The Shining" should watch "Doctor Sleep" at least once to see how it sits with them. I never read _The Shining_ nor _Doctor Sleep_ so maybe that's why I liked it.

The director tormented Shelly Duvall(Wendy) during filming because he wanted her to be highly emotional and he even instructed the crew to never console her when she was upset, she said in a recent interview that she had days where she cried for 24 hours. People think making this movie triggered her mental health issues that caused her to walk away from her successful movie career and she now lives in poverty. They were also made to film scenes over and over like the stair scene that was filmed 125 times.
Conspiracy theorists believe that there are a lot of clues in this movie that prove that Kubrick helped the U.S government fake the moon landing, people believe Kubrick directed it and that things like Danny’s Apollo 11 sweater were clues that it’s true. There is a documentary on RUclips that points out everything in this movie that are clues Kubrick put in.
The here’s Johnny line is a reference to an old late night talk show that was hosted by Johnny Carson, at the start of the show the announcer would say and here’s Johnny.

    1. Joe Turkel/Lloyd plays Tyrell in the original Bladerunner (Hint Hint)
    2. "Here's Johnny" was adlib by Nickelson.
    3. It took 117 takes for Jack to chop through the door. He used his voluntary firefighting skills to get through all the takes.
    4. The reason King didn't like this adaptation of the movie is because he didn't like the changes Kubrick made. This thing was remade just for King and although the remake was more in line with the book IMVHO it wasn't as good as this one. He has recently taken all the bad things he said about this back.
    5. Nichelson and Scatman worked together before in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
    6. Shelly Duvall said making this movie was the worst experience in her life. She was harassed on and off screen.
    7. GOOF: They would have made more than enough money to keep the roads open if they had it open for skiing.
    8. The real villain is the hotel itself.
    9. If you like Stephen King the adaptation hole is very deep. A good place to start is "Misery" with Oscar winning Cathy Bates as the over the top Wack job.
    10. Watch Dr. Sleep. Danny is an adult and many of the loose ends well be cleared up.

Mazes _can_ be overwhelming, but a lot _less_ so if you've got a method. I mean a _map's_ handy, but failing that, you can make due with just a method.
Just make it a point, with every junction you come to, to take the right-most option. Turn right if you have the _option_ to turn right. If you _have_ no such option, then go straight. If you have no such option, _then,_ and _only_ then, turn left.
_Or,_ make it a point, with every junction, to take the _left-most_ option. Turn left if you have the _option_ to turn left. If you _don't_ have such an option, then go straight. If you have no such option to do _that,_ _then,_ and _only_ then, turn right.
You've got to _pick_ one, though. You've got to pick _one_ of these and _stick_ with it, all the way from entrance to exit to make sure you don't go in circles.

Even though we see him in horrible scenes, it didn't feel like it during filming and the whole time the director and crew acted as if they were filming an adventure suspense movie. The various bloody or tense scenes were filmed without any child actors (including the little girls - they were only in the scene where they stand in the hallway, the lying bodies were dummies).

Steven King usually takes a motif and runs with it with a strange fantastic element. This book / movie is just a simple examination of an abusive parent / spouse. Everything Jack does is what abusive partners do. They trap you, they try to get you to stop communicating with others, they hurt you, and they try to kill you.
They never take responsibility for hurting those they hurt, like Jack denied being frankly insane throughout most of the story, driving his wife to terror, and hurting his kid when the kid was a baby and threw his papers around, as babies do.

There are many film analyses of this film, which will just show you HOW great it is beyond the first look at the movie. It has Easter Eggs every where in the film and weird sex symbols, indian symbols and film symbols throughout the film that ties it together perfectly.
