    Anthony Hopkins only has around 20 mins of screentime but he won an Oscar for it. If that doesn't tell you how great he is at acting nothing will.

    The over-arching sense you are coming away with is pure terror and suspense, but dear lord, you've got to admit that those performances by Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster were otherworldly. Jonathan Demme deserves some credit for what he was able to pull together as well. I've read the Thomas Harris trilogy and Demme nailed it!

    • @RDRussell2
      @RDRussell2 Год назад +1

      Agree about Jonathan Demme, but hey, come on, he DID get more than "some" credit, including winning the Best Director Oscar for this film. This is one of only three movies to ever win "the Big 5" Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. This is also the only "horror" movie to ever win Best Picture, So Demme DOES deserve some credit, but also I'd say he got it.
      The other two movies to take the top 5 Oscars? "It Happened One Night" from 1934, and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" from 1975. I haven't seen "It Happened One Night" in so long I can barely remember if I liked it or not. But "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is a contemporary classic, and still relevant today. Nominally it's about people locked up in a psych ward, but it's true meaning is man versus man, with the antagonist taking the form of oppressive institutionalization. It's about holding on to your individual worth and values, even in the face of those who would suggest your individuality is a problem.

    Another excellent psychological thriller is based on a true story called "Citizen-X," about a serial killer in the Soviet Union, where a single detective tried to find a killer of more than 50 women and children, between 1978 and 1990. In what was then the USSR, the investigation was opposed by bureaucracy, incompetence and those in power, who insisted that the USSR could not have serial killers. In some ways, it's similar to this movie, but it has more to do with how this single detective eventually gained the respect of the police he worked with and how he worked with a psychiatrist to help find the murderer. It looks like it's available on RUclips if you would like to see it. It's a very well done movie. The story is based on the capture of the mass-murderer Andrei Chikatilo - Андрій Романович Чикатило.

  • @Smokie_666
    @Smokie_666 2 года назад +6

    This movie is such a masterpiece in so many aspects. There is a lot that is happening in many scenes that the viewer generally is not aware of but creates a distinct reaction. Such as the first time we see Lecter in his cell. Unlike most people, he stands completely straight with hands resting at his side with an expression of calm pleasantness on his face. Not only is this unusual compared to the other inmates, but to most people in general. His posture and demeanor convey almost no body language at all. That is why it's unnerving, because we pick up on visuals subconsciously before a person speaks, but there is almost nothing to read from Lecter minus a polite smile. As a matter of fact, the lack of anything to read in itself sends a powerful message and creates unease in a person. When people write this movie off as a simple "Mystery horror movie" or the like, I feel as though they miss part of the experience in the film. Much like other movies such as The Shining and The Thing.

The part where Bill struggles with the couch to get her to help him was also inspired Ted Bundy who would pretend to have a broken arm and struggle to get something in his car to get the woman he wanted to help him and he would hit her over the head and push her into his car.

    Clarice is a titan of a badass character. A few times during the movie. Clarice is surrounded by much bigger men. In the elevator at the start in Quantico. At the postmortem exam in the small town funder parlor. It is meant to show how she is a female in a male-dominated world of law enforcement. Especially back in the 80's when the movie was based.
    At the time only one woman had graduated from the FBI training program. The officers at the funeral parlor watch her with consternation.
    What are you gonna do, little lady that we can't do? We're the big bad lawmen in this town.

    Something that stuck with me is how she wasn't afraid of Lecter after having lied to him. Than it became more obvious why. When upon reaching Hannibals cell she gauged his reaction to see if he'd even be willing to continue talking (which he did), if he had lost all respect for her he would likely have just dismissed her rudely as he has done with all the previous fbi agents.
    I don't think Lecter cares about people in general but he admired that she took a stand for what she believes in (a chance to save a girl) and took on the potential hate of one of the most dangerous people in the world (by lying to his face about an offer to a better prison).

    Arguably the best Thomas Harris adaptation out there. Red Dragon was tried twice with Manhunter and Red Dragon respectively. And of course Hannibal, an okay book with a decent movie that most people love to hate.
    And in the book they let you see from Hannibal's perspective, the cops in charge in Memphis don't understand him like Barney (the orderly) does. Strength and machismo itself can be easily outsmarted.

    The piano music that plays before and after he kills the two officers is J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations. Before, it's the 'Aria' and after was one of the variations. The Goldberg Variations have featured in at least Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising. I'm not sure about Red Dragon or Manhunter, but I wouldn't be surprised.

    I would like to provide a short explanation of the Hannibal Lecter franchise, if I may.
    There have been 11 installments in the franchise so far: 4 books, 5 films, and 2 TV shows.
    The writer Thomas Harris wrote the 1st book “Red Dragon” which came out in 1981.
    The novel Red Dragon was adapted into the movie Manhunter, directed by Michael Mann, which came out in 1986. Manhunter cost about $14 or $15 million (about $37 to $39 million in 2022 dollars), but it grossed less than $9 million (about $23 million in 2022 dollars) in the USA. It got mixed reviews at the time, but it has gotten better reviews in recent years. It currently has 93% from all critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 100% from top critics.
    Thomas Harris then wrote the 2nd novel “The Silence of the Lambs” which came out in 1988, which is a sequel to the 1st book Red Dragon.
    The film “The Silence of the Lambs” then came out in 1991, directed by Jonathan Demme. Jodie Foster played Clarice Starling and Anthony Hopkins (now Sir Anthony Hopkins as of 1993) played Dr. Hannibal Lecter. It could be argued that the film “The Silence of the Lambs” is a sequel to the film “Manhunter” but this is not the usual understanding.
    Thomas Harris then wrote the 3rd book “Hannibal” which came out in 1999, which is a sequel to the 2nd novel The Silence of the Lambs.
    The novel “Hannibal” was then adapted into the film “Hannibal” in 2001. Unlike the questionable relationship between the first 2 movies (Manhunter and The Silence of the Lambs), the film “Hannibal” is unquestionably a direct sequel to the film The Silence of the Lambs. Sir Anthony Hopkins returned to play Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the film Hannibal. Jodie Foster unfortunately did not return to play Clarice Starling in Hannibal, but I can’t say why until after you see it, if you choose to.
    It was then decided to adapt again the original book Red Dragon in 2002 into the film Red Dragon, directed by Brett Ratner and starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The 2002 film Red Dragon is unquestionably a direct prequel to the film The Silence of the Lambs.
    Thomas Harris then wrote the 4th book “Hannibal Rising” which came out in 2006, which is a prequel to the 1st book Red Dragon. It starts with Hannibal Lecter as a child in Europe during World War 2.
    The book Hannibal Rising was then adapted into the film Hannibal Rising in 2007, directed by Peter Webber, as a prequel to the film Red Dragon.
    The TV show “Hannibal” was then created in 2013. It ran for 3 seasons until 2015.
    The final installment, so far, has been the TV show “Clarise” which only ran for 1 season in 2021.

      I would also like to briefly note the success of the film The Silence of the Lambs and its 2 stars.
      The great Jodie Foster earned her first Oscar nomination at the age of only 12 in the 1976 film Taxi Driver.
      In 1987, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second appointed Anthony Hopkins (who is actually British) to the prestigious rank of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which is abbreviated as CBE, thus transforming Anthony Hopkins into Anthony Hopkins CBE.
      In 1988, Jodie Foster starred in the film “The Accused” earning her the Oscar for Best Actress.
      The film “The Silence of the Lambs” cost about $19 million to make (about in $40 million in 2022) and grossed about $273 million (about $576 million in 2022).
      At the Academy Awards in 1992, The Silence of the Lambs won Oscars in all 5 major categories: Best Picture, Best Directing to Jonathan Demme, Best Actress to Jodie Foster, Best Actor to Anthony Hopkins, and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) to Ted Tally. Only 2 other movies have ever won in all 5 major categories. The Silence of the Lambs is also one of only 6 horror films to be nominated for Best Picture, and the only horror film ever to win Best Picture.
      In 1993, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth knighted Anthony Hopkins CBE, thus transforming Anthony Hopkins CBE into Sir Anthony Hopkins CBE.
