Showed a friend an ep of The Avengers and she asked, "Are you showing me this because of the X-Men?"
      "Huh?" I answered.
She then pulled from her huge comic collection the X-Men bits of Jean Grey becoming Phoenix. The comic book was a scene-for-scene copy (inspiration?) from the exact Avengers ep we were watching.

That line is actually a reference to the 1970 film BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, which - weird fact - was written by the great critic Roger Ebert.
Also, from Ebert's review of AUSTIN POWERS:
"The movie, written by Myers and directed by Jay Roach, is smart enough to know the 1960s are funny without being exaggerated. In one sequence, a fashion photographer shoots '60s fashions, and the clothes, which look like outlandish science-fiction fantasies, are in fact identical to costumes worn during posing sessions in Antonioni's BLOW UP (1967)..."

I don’t know if you’ve ever watched Saturday Night Live, but on it they had a skit called Wayne’s World where Mike Myers (Austin Powers here) plays the lead character. They eventually made made a movie out of it in 1992 and is hilarious. I’m sure if you looked up SNL Wayne’s World here on RUclips you could see some of the skits and get an idea of what it’s all about before watching the movie if you so choose.

I love the Austin Powers movies. They are very funny parodies of the old Spy/action films of the 1960s/70s such as the old James Bond films that starred Sean Connery and Roger Moore.

@@nsasupporter7557 That IS fun. It reminds me of how Edna Mode from The Incredible was...cast? I forget who was supposed to play her originally, but when asked what the character was supposed to sound like, Brad Bird did an impression of how he visualized her voice and the woman said, 'that was perfect, what do you need me for?' So Brad Bird just voiced her himself.

And since someone already spotted the Avengers ‘67/Emma Peel reference, I’ll point out that the references to “Ming Tea”, and the fembots’ bullet-bikinis, are both references to “The 10th Victim”, a groovy 60’s Italian spy spoof about two competing assassins, that’s as much of a recognizable cult-classic as the better known spy spoofs: ruclips.net/video/VXc-Dl2ojtM/видео.html
