80s action movies are great, but great action movies are timeless. The relationship between Riggs and Murtaugh is why this movie works. The whole franchise is great because of the chemistry between these two actors. You should watch them all, on or off camera, either way. This movie is similar to The Last Boyscout, in that it is another buddy action comedy where the two leads work so well with eachother.

You've previously seen Lucia Naff, the actress who plays Dixie, in Total Recall. She played the three-boobed hooker.
Murtaugh wasn't talking about the tree lot shootout when he heard about Riggs' stunt. I think you're watching a cut version; there's another scene in the full version with Riggs, before he and Murtaugh are assigned to work together, in which a gunman was holed up at a school with a sniper rifle. Riggs walks out into the field of fire drawing the gunman's attention and killing him.
This movie pretty much DEFINED the "Buddy Cop" film in the 80s, and is still influencing the genre today.

The director of this movie, Richard Donner, made many fun movies, including “Superman,” “Ladyhawke,” “The Goonies,” and “Scrooged.” His first big movie was actually a horror/thriller that had a huge cultural impact: “The Omen.”
The underlying theme of this movie, about what happened to Vietnam veterans after the war and how they used what they learned in that war, is a very common one in 80s movies. This one is a bit uncommon in that it has two sets of veterans (Riggs and Murtaugh on one side, and the General and his people on the other) as opposing examples; often there’s just the “good” veteran who’s using his war skills to help someone in trouble, or the “bad/crazy” veteran who’s using them *on* the person in trouble.
The soundtrack to this movie series is unbelievable: score composed by Michael Kamen, featuring him on keyboards, David Sanborn on saxophone, and Eric Clapton on guitar. There was a throwaway title track in this one by a no-name band, but the sequels include original songs by The Beach Boys, George Harrison, Elton John, and Sting.
3:21 You’re right; the term often used for detectives is “plainclothesmen” to distinguish them from the police who wear uniforms.
16:09 If you’re going to watch this series, pause the video before you take a drink - the zingers come out of nowhere, and you’ll choke on your coffee/tea if you’re not careful.

Speaking of martial arts, "Lethal Weapon" was the American general public's introduction to Gracie jiu jitsu (called Brazilian jiu jitsu in the credits)and the much more obscure martial art of jailhouse rock (which is purported to be fighting techniques developed by prison inmates for surviving surprise attacks in confined spaces).

You're right, size doesn't matter. The large post that Joshua was swinging around takes a lot of space to use, whereas the side-handled baton Riggs had is ideally suited for close-quarters defense. During the time of this movie, the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) outfitted their Patrol Officers with the PR-24 baton. It could be used for climbing, deflection, takedowns, etc. Not too many departments use this these days, preferring to go to an ASP style baton which easily fits on a duty belt.

Watching Dasha take a drink knowing that the "Thin's my middle name."/"You're wife's cooking, I'm not surprised." line was next was so great! I was just waiting for her to spit her drink everywhere, LOL!!! Definitely watch Lethal Weapon 2, 3, and 4. Just wait until Joe Pesci shows up in Lethal Weapon 2. Hilarious!!!

hhaah GREAt reactions @dasha MEL GIbson was born in USA but grew up in AUSTralia when his dad moved there, THE WILd hand slap he did is a tribute to a 3 person comedy team called the 3 stooges from 1930's - that filmed short 15- 20 min nutty wild situations where they used physical humor and sometimes PIE throwin which to kids growing up was hilarious

Consider watching “The Colour Purple.” Here Danny Glover plays a completely different kind of character. Oprah Winfrey also acts in it.

Good job Dasha. Riggs is who John Rambo might have turned out if things were just a little different. There are sequels and they are also worth seeing. Joe Pesci adds his brand of humor. There's a nice Billy Crystal buddy cop movie "running scared ". Danny Glover and Gary Busey. "Predator II". Not as good as the original but was worth my time. Hasta la vista baby.
