Max von Sydow, the "old priest", was 43 at the time of the movie. They used prosthetics to make him look older. Unlike so many actors before or after him, he actually looked like this when he got older. Dick Smith, the make up artist, was a genius.

Very much true. In addition to the old age makeup on Von Sydow which goes unnoticed by many, Smith’s work on this film stretches across the whole film, and shows the devastation of the other characters. It’s extremely subtle and real.

I really liked the fact that Regan's possession was gradual instead of instantaneous. Not to mention the fact that this movie was made in the 70s. Made the movie even more realistic because it relied more on good acting than CGI. Would you believe that Linda Blair had to spend some time in a mental institution in order to learn how to act crazy during her possessed scenes. I mean the sheer thought of what Linda Blair had to go through in order to make the character realistic would make anybody's head do a 360.

In case no one mentioned this, the "spider walk" down the stairs was not in the original because the wires were visible and they had no way of removing them back in 72.
I saw this at the Ziegfeld theater in NYC opening week. This was the first movie, that I know of, that dealt with exorcism. The book was based on a real life exorcism which the author changes several details. Because they didn't want to offend the Catholic church, they had priests to consult on the Rite of Exorcism and possession to be as authentic as possible.

    • @darkamora5123

First off I am Catholic so I have a vested interest in believing in God and demons, but while this is based on the real exorcism of a young boy from St Louis the truth of his possession (amongst those who believe in such things) is in doubt.
Whilst restrained none of the bruising or scratches that had appeared prior recurred. Also after a long bout of unsuccessful exorcisms the demon suddenly left when, in the boy's presence, they mentioned if it was once again unsuccessful he'd be placed in an asylum and given treatments like ECT. Too many things that spoke of fakery were observed, even for people who believe in the reality of the supernatural, to find it credible today.

Dasha, "The Exorcist" is based on a novel of the same name, written by William Peter Blatty. However, the novel was based on a true story, of an exorcism performed on a 14-year-old boy (in Maryland), in 1949. If you feel up to it, you should see, at some point, "Exorcist 3". Part 3 is considered the real sequel to the first film, not "Exorcist 2", which was panned by the critics. Part 3 is based, again, on a book by William Peter Blatty called "Legion" and is a worthy sequel to the first film. You did a great job with your reaction! You really got this film, and it is a difficult film to watch, for the first time. Thank you!

Halfway through the movie they stopped it and turned on all the lights and announced over the speaker system that everyone was to remain in their cars because an ambulance was coming in because someone had had a heart attack. "This is the same demon.". That is absolutely correct. The demon was exorcized years ago by father merrin (earlier, the head priests commented that it took months and nearly killed him). Decades later, the demon manipulated events to draw merrin to it for a "rematch." (Hence, the demon naming merrin in the recording-"fear the priest" and screaming his name when he arrived at the house) In the end, the demon was initially dumbstruck when a weak heart killed merrin and later, was giddy about it. The demon did take hold of karras once he openly invited the demon inside (symbolized by the tearing off of karras' saint christopher necklace) but vacated his body just before karras jumped out the window. What ultimately frightened people (besides the slow burn, the effects, and the language) was that evil seemingly won over good and that the devil was more powerful than God.

    • @PaulSchober
      @PaulSchober Год назад +6

I disagree that the demon "vacated Karras' body" before he jumped through the window. IMO Karras was able to momentarily take control/suppress the demon and then jumped, taking it "with him", hoping that in death the demon would have no earthly vessel.

And just to add another twist, in Exorcist 3, we learn that the Devil allows the soul of a serial killer to enter Karras, effectively sharing the body. He somehow survives, crawls from the cheap coffin and grave, and eventually winds up in an insane asylum for years, where eventually the inhabiting soul of the serial killer begins possessing invalids and forcing them to commit murder. The same cop from the original eventually kills Karras/The Gemini Killer and ends the possession.

In the 1950s my uncle, Fr. Angelo Caserta - who was a relatively young priest who had studied for his PhD in Theology in Rome - was the exorcist for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. That is a very difficult assignment for a priest, and it affected him greatly. He wouldn't speak of it until my mother (who was not to be denied information) cornered him, her brother-in-law, in the late 1950s, and asked him about the experience. What he described - which Mom related to me 20 years or so before this movie was ever made - was pretty much what you saw here: things flying through the air, moving on their own, freezing cold in the room, etc. I'm making no judgements or statements of belief. I'm skeptical at best. But I know my uncle was a profoundly loving, intelligent, and truthful man. This is a great mystery for me, a religious skeptic at best. Two facts about the film's story:
1 - the ppint of Reagan's possesdion is not the girl itself but for the devil to cause desperation on the adults around her. Reagan's corruption is but a means for the devil to assault others's spirits and cause them to dispair. In that regard the devil partially wins. While Resgan was saved, at least 3 people died, two of them legitimate good men devoted to good and who would had done a lot of good work if they had lived longer lives. Not to mention the sadness of having witnessed such horrors on all those who survived.
2 - the statuette found in the diggint in North Iraq depicts the ancient mesopotanean devil Pazuzu, the lord of flies. In ancient mesopotamia people would call upon Pazuzu (by bribing him with offering) for protection against other demons. Ence why the line in the movie "evil against evil". Pazuzu was a legitimate evil demon but he took side with the humans against other devils but not because of good intentions on his part. Ancient mesopotamia religion was quite fatalistic, ancient mesopotamians didnt believe there was pure good in the world but they were certain true evil existed.

Fun fact about behind the scenes of the exorcist in the end after father Charis killed himself. The priest who came to him crying the actor was actually crying he wasn’t acting well I mean technically he was but at the same time he was actually crying because the Director William Friedkin pulled him aside before the camera started rolling and smacked him in the face and then the camera started rolling and then shoved him into the scene. Basically the Director did things to get genuine reactions from the actors I mean the things he did was a little over the top but it’s genius filmmaking at the same time the Director did all kinds of crazy things.

Father Merrin was the true target of the demon. Father Merrin faced this demon before and the dig in Iraq was a sign that he was fated to clash with the demon again. Father Karras, though a good man, did not have the power of faith to defeat the demon. He had to sacrifice himself physically to the demon, but could not defeat the demon on a spiritual level. Father Karras was easy pickings for the demon. Unfortunately, Merrin's massive heart attack prevented him from his triumph over the demon.

When this movie came out it was insane, people were like passing out and I heard someone had a heart attack but that could just be made up. I do know that my grandfather and his brother went to see it in theaters and couldn't sleep for days! It was the scariest movie of the time, partly because of the AMAZING work on the special effects, and it's still a relevant movie today, people still watch it and love it and talk about it and there are still references to it in media today. So glad you loved it, it's such a good one!

Great take. I wanted to give you some insight. As a kid in the 70s I distinctly remember adults talking about this movie. It was THE nation sensation at the time. It wasn't an exaggeration that people had heart attacks, nervous breakdowns, fainted, vomited, ran from theaters, etc. I heard my parents and their friends, my adult relatives talking about how there were warning signs at movie theaters NOT to watch the movie if they were pregnant, had heart conditions, bad nerves, etc. They eventually did documentaries at the time about The Exorcist, complete footage of the day.

@@nightfall902 Indeed. And I think at that period of time people were still accustomed to movies like The Ten Commandments, King Of Kings, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and such to were in the movies demons or the Devil wasn't really portrayed. And if so, they were promptly vanquished without much of a fight. Evil entities didn't graphically brutalized people especially a child in those movies (or any movie back then). Also, I think back then the majority of Americans identified as Christian. So seeing the imagery (most scenarios of which had never been done in a movie) shocked the public. And I only mention the public mainly back then identifying as Christian to point out it was common back then to admonish kids to behave or the Devil would get them; pastors preached "fire and brimstone" sermons warning adults to serve God or the Devil would get them. So The Exorcist played brilliantly on people's fear of Satan and their superstitions.

It is a truly frightening film because of the evil that is inhabiting the young girl, and the movie does a great job of telling the story. Exorcism is a scary theme at any time, and this one was really emotional! The ending is sad and happy at the same time, happy for the young girl and sad for the men who gave their lives to save her. You do a wonderful job with all your reactions and I have always enjoyed watching each one of them!! Thank you so much!!! The technician was probably rewinding the tape through the speaker, and he noticed it sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks. That's how he realized it was backwards English. Either that, or he was just used to how it sounded (it wasn't that unusual in the '70s to play records backwards in order to hear a secret message, as back-masking was a common gimmick used in the recording industry at the time).

GREAT reaction, Dasha, I've been loving many of them but this one is special. A few things you might like to know. The actor who plays the older exorcist, Father Merrin, is named Max Von Sydow and he was never "big box office," anything like that, but he was a true star. He appeared in a movie called The Seventh Seal as a knight, returning from the Crusades, who plays a game of chess with Death himself. Just to look at him and listen to him, people thought "This is a knight." Even when he sometimes played villains, we still thought of him as a knight. The younger priest has a beautiful name, Damien, but we've ruined that name over the years. It first belonged to a priest who ran a leper colony in Hawaii, and the character of Father Damien Karras in the movie is a kind of tribute to that. To save the girl, he takes the demon upon himself and then dies. Unfortunately (I think), a later horror movie came out called The Omen, in which a little boy named Damien Thorn was the Antichrist. It's an entertaining movie but not as strong and serious as The Exorcist and now, when we hear the name Damien, we just think "Antichrist." I think it's a bit tragic. Finally, it helps to take yourself back to 1973 to understand the impact this movie had. Some people were beginning to question authority and rebel against society -- think about that movie that the mother stars in -- and I'm not sure much came of that, but it freaked out a lot of other people and they started to worry "Oh no, nothing is sacred anymore, our society is coming apart." So the movie was very much of its time, because it was as if the demon had waited until 1973 to test how strong our faith still was. Nowadays we joke about this movie, but back in 1973 it really "got under the skin" of many of us. I loved some ideas of yours, like the mother buying her daughter a ranch. Thank you!

When I went to see this movie was when it came out in theatres. We were seven in our group; most of my brothers, one sister-in-law, one of my sisters and a close family friend. My eldest brother was 25 years old at the time and he sat in the aisle seat. At one point during the movie he jumped out of his seat and landed in the aisle. When he recovered he got up and left the theatre and never came back.
The nervous tension was very real in the theatres! The hype from all the stories we had heard was with us. My friend had seen the movie the week before me and said someone sitting in her row had had a heart attack. So before we even went into the theatre we were jittery and scared. Being in the dark with all that nervous tension all around us did not help, but enhanced the scariness of the movie. Also, being Catholics we understood the importance of the exorcism and we also knew this movies is BASED ON A TRUE EXORCISM that had occurred in the 1940s in Maryland to a 14 year old boy.
All of this helped to make The Exorcist a very scary movie for all of us. After all these years it is STILL my favourite scary movie of all time!

One thing I kinda wish they hadn’t changed from the novel is that in the book when Fr. Merrin has his heart attack Regan is absolutely furious, ranting about how they would have won this time. It solidifies the idea that whatever is inside Regan is the thing Merrin fought years before, and it makes it clear that Merrin’s heart gave out (a lot of folks think the demon killed him, not realizing that the pills Merrin was taking were nitroglycerin tabs).

Inasmuch as this film is explicitly Christian, it is the very opposite of Lovecraftian. The latter is existential horror because the characters discover that there is no God - only inconceivably powerful entities that do not care about humanity - and the horror comes from learning of one's insignificance.
In contrast, the Exorcist is predicated on the existence of God, in particular, the one true God in three hypostases, as well as the devil. Moreover both God and the devil are active in the world and have a great deal of interest in Man as well as each individual person. There is good, there is evil, and the battlefield is men's souls. Humanity is supremely important in this, and the horror comes from people encountering the preternatural events and works of the devil that impose on their heretofore normal lives. In Lovecraftian horror, there is no good or evil, and arguably no souls afterlife or spiritual warfare; Man does not matter - we are but a single short-lived species amongst countless others that will play no important role in the universe. The horror comes from the shattering of a world view that holds that life has meaning - it is atheistic horror.

My dog was asleep beside me on the couch. I was listening in headphones, so I was totally immersed in the sound, and actually screamed aloud at a jump-scare I wasn't expecting. The dog startled awake, and sat up to see if I was ok - but I started to laugh because the movie had "gotcha'd" me. The dog all but shook her head, jumped down, and went off to bed in the next room. For my part, I first saw this in the worst possible circumstances, as a freshman at Georgetown University in Wash. DC. it was shown on campus, and as all the film's outdoor scenes were filmed at Georgetown U (where the book author went to school) and in Georgetown, at the beginning it was more screams when somebody's dorm came into view, than for any horror effects. As a freshman, I lived in the building where the actress filmed her speech scene, and in my second year, across the street from where the house and the stairs were. I went to Mass in the chapel where the desecration took place (filmed somewhere else). My third year I lived in the same building where Father Karras supposedly lived. That upside down spider walk that Reagan does down the staircase was not in the original 1973 theatrical release of The Exorcist, or the original VHS release and cable TV and Network TV airings. It was a deleted scene that was put back into the special collectors edition directors cut of The Exorcist that came out in 1999. It was originally removed from the movie because the wires holding up actress Linda Blair were too visible on camera, and it wasn't until the advent of CGI that those wires could be digitally erased from the scene.

"The Exorcist" made such a big cultural splash back in 1973 that it led many people to believe demonic possession was an actual phenomena -- to the point where the Catholic Church had to dust off the old books and train priests in the ritual. Since then the practice has spread to other denominations for better and for worse. Just last year a 3-year old girl was killed during an exorcism in a small Pentecostal church in San Jose, California. At any rate, Lee J. Cobb, the actor who played the police detective, played the heavy in the classic films "On the Waterfront" (1954) and "12 Angry Men" (1957). He also played Fyodor Karamazov in "The Brothers Karamazov" (1958). Check out those films when you can.

CAn remember people laughing nervously at the beginning for nobody knew what to expect. Then, once all the demonic stuff starts happening: popcorn flying through the air, people screaming, people actually fainting, people actually praying out loud, people actually running for the doors, people actually vomiting, and other crazy stuff. For a 10-year-old not really understanding what the impact of the movie was having on the audience, must say that their reactions were way more entertaining than the movie. Looks like you viewed the extended/directors cut which have purchased and seen more out of curiosity as to what was cut out/added - just does not seem as scary as the theatrical version where that version seems to not give the viewer any time to breath or get their thoughts straight.
