It's perfectly okay to not know Malcolm is dead all along and only find out at the end. That's how the director intended it, and that's how it works best for the viewer. And then it's wonderful to watch the film again, now knowing that we've been watching a ghost all along, and noticing all the things that go with it. Realizing that nobody sees Malcolm except Cole. Realizing that Malcolm's wife's sadness at the restaurant and the one and only meal ordered isn't because he's late, but because she's celebrating a sad anniversary without her husband. To realize why she's on the antidepressants, or why she's not avoiding a potential new relationship. The film is wonderfully thought out and one enjoys it every time - though of course the first experience, when one finds out the amazing twist at the end, is the best.

My two favorite things in this movie are the conversation in the car about Grandma and the bumblebee pendant... and the way our perception of Malcolm's wife changes as soon as we find out that Malcolm is dead.
I really didn't like her. I found her cold. I felt she had abandoned him.
The second I found out that Malcolm was dead, in one second, I completely and correctly re-evaluated her as simply a woman who was grieving the loss of her husband. It's like I instantly re-evaluated the ENTIRE movie. What a great movie experience.

We're like the ghosts, we only see what we want to see. I was always mentally explaining away why nobody was talking to Malcolm - his wife was mad at him, Cole's mother had just finished a lengthy discussion with him when Cole came home from school, there were a lot of people at the funeral, and they just assumed he was a friend of the family they hadn't met before, etc. I just wanted to see what happened next with him and Cole, and didn't stop to consider the odd details.

The only people I know who guessed he was dead were people that are familiar with how psychologists operate in America. It would be very unusual for a psychologist to follow a patient around in the community, introduce himself to a child with no parent present (except in a school or residential treatment facility), make house calls, etc. Malcolm did not work like a (living) psychologist.

@@mike888_ca2Funny thing is every time I read a comment like this on reactions to this movie I laugh because I did have someone like that growing up. They're called Therapy Support Staff. Yes, during an introductory meeting the parent would probably be present, but after that it was just me and the TSS person. They would go with me to school sometimes, summer day camps, museums, etc. I guess they're not psychologists per se, but their purpose was very much similar.

This is one of the best twist ending movies ever, and in retrospect it is played out so perfectly. Malcolm is always in scenes with other people, but there's never any direct interaction going on. And you just don't realize it or what it means until the ending. This was M. Night Shyamalan's finest effort because it was his first so we had nothing at all for expectations watching this movie. Everything was done so well and everyone in the cast was amazing and did an amazing job at acting their roles. Cole was a brilliant character given real life and depth by someone who would be considered too young to be able to take a role of that depth and give it that life. Cole's mom was brilliantly done, and Malcolm's -wife- widow was too. But Bruce Willis did an amazing job too, though in some ways he had the easiest role of all. I still tear up watching this movie. It is so emotive and so emotional in ways that just aren't done anymore. But at least we have movies like this to show how great writing, acting, and directing work to make a masterpiece.
And though I'm really good at predicting twists, this one I missed completely. I missed it so badly that I had to go back and rewatch the movie again right after and catalogue every time Bruce was in a scene with someone else and realize that only Cole ever interacted with him.

I enjoy that they allow you to understand ghosts in here, their perspective makes sense. Some of them seem to be a bit more confused about the state they are in, as he says, they don't know they are dead. The little girl seemed to be a little more lucid and understood why she was drawn there. It's different than a lot of other ghost movies where the ghost is often just spiteful and evil for the sake of being spiteful and evil.

In this movie, whenever you see the colour red, a ghost is nearby. There are little hints that Willis' character is dead throughout the movie - the red doorknob, the red tint of the buttons on Cole's jacket, etc.
Some of M. Night Shyamalan's other movies are also worth checking out: SIGNS and UNBREAKABLE (also starring Bruce Willis)

@@brianthom6798 No I couldn't. But another good twist for me came at the end of the movie "Fallen", when you realize the story was being narrated by the demon as opposed to Denzell's character.

      @brianthom6798 2 года назад +1

@@gordonduke8812 That was a pretty good twist, but it always left a bad taste in my mouth: With the reveal that Azazel could inhabit animals, it turned out it was basically impossible that Denzel could win anyway; so it retroactively made it so there were essentially no stakes in the movie.

I have a story related to this film ...
Some 20 years ago, I had sinus surgery to correct a deviated septum (a very minor condition). They had me on the operating table, and had administered a general anesthetic. They asked me to count down from ten, which is normal. You're usually unconscious by the time you hit 3.
Now I had plenned this, and kept my concentration long enough that as I lost consciousness, I said:
    "I see dead people."
I dopped-off to the sound of the surgical staff laughing.

I thought for sure that he was going to become the next Leonardo DiCaprio, but he made a surprising few movies after this and that was that. The director, M. Night, has the misfortunate of making his best movie first and never quite being able to equal that in any of his other movies.
