Paul trying to switch from Misery to a different type of novel, like he did with the book Annie burned, mirrors something Stephen King experienced. He had written horror books for a while and suddenly switched to fantasy and wrote a story called "Eyes of the Dragon" that his horror fans HATED. The negative feedback he got on that with terms like "just stick to horror like we love!" were part of the inspiration for some of Misery. So yes, good call by Dasha, this movie/novel are 100% a commentary by Stephen King on his own fans. Well, some of them. :D

So, here's something about the book: In the original novel, Annie Wilkes doesn't break his ankles. She chops off his foot with an ax, and cauterizes the wound with a blowtorch.
That scene was a big reason why screenwriter William Goldman wanted to write the movie - and when they changed the scene, he was *mad*. Eventually, however, he realized that they were right to do so - that (to paraphrase) "if they'd done what I wanted, it would have been too much," that the audience would have hated Annie "and, in time, hated us."

When King originally conceived the idea of MISERY, he thought it would be a short story: A writer is trapped in the house of his Number One Fan, Annie, and "Annie would demand that Paul write another novel about his plucky continuing character, Misery Chastain, one just for her. After first demurring, Paul would of course agree (a psychotic nurse, I thought, could be very persuasive.) Annie would tell him she intended to sacrifice her beloved pig, Misery, to this project. MISERY'S RETURN would, she'd say, consist of but one copy: a holographic manuscript bound in pigskin!
"Here we'd fade out, I thought, and return to Annie's remote Colorado retreat six or eight months later for the surprise ending.
"Paul is gone, his sickroom turned into a shrine to Misery Chastain, but Misery the pig is still very much in evidence, grunting serenely away in her sty beside the barn. On the walls of the 'Misery Room' are book covers, stills from the Misery movies, pictures of Paul Sheldon, perhaps a newspaper headline reading 'FAMED ROMANCE NOVELIST STILL MISSING'. In the center of the room, carefully spotlighted, is a single book on a small table [...] It is the Annie Wilkes edition of MISERY'S RETURN. The binding is beautiful, and it should be: it is the skin of Paul Sheldon. And Paul himself? His bones might have been buried behind the barn, but I thought it likely that the pig would have eaten the tasty parts."
However, once he started writing it, he found that "Paul Sheldon turned out to be a good deal more resourceful than I initially thought, and his efforts to play Scheherazade and save his life gave me a chance to say some things about the redemptive power of writing that I had long felt but never articulated." He also felt that "Anne turned out to be more complex than I'd first imagined her," was "great fun to write about", and that "[i]n the end, I felt that Annie was almost as much to be pitied as to be feared."

That wasn't easy to look at!! So that wasn't easy to look at when his legs were badly bruised at the beginning!!
Wonder what Dasha will be doing when the hobbling scene happens???

Dasha thanks for noticing how it’s born easy to pick a lock, especially with a hair pin. I’m a locksmith & show up to lockouts & people think it takes two seconds because of movies!

Years before this movie came out I read the book and believe me the book is much more gruesome. He's called the KING of horror for a reason........On a side note, I've been watching your (Dasha) channel for awhile now and I can't help but notice how much your English has improved. Far better than my Spanish! :)

Fun fact many of Stephen King's novels are based on nightmares that he's had. Being a writer himself I have to think that this must be one of them.

Another claustrophobic thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat and where the protagonist is confined inside a room is WAIT UNTIL DARK. With the lovely Audrey Hepburn. You’ll feel her helplessness, her being trapped.
Through a series of events in the prologue, a doll ends up in a blind woman’s basement apartment. It is stuffed with heroin and three crooks want it. What starts as a hustle gradually evolved into a nail biting battle of wits. And there is a jump scare in the climax; makes your heart leap out of your chest like Misery.
