You are indeed correct, Dasha! That young guy in the jail cell is indeed Giancarlo Esposito, who was the chicken man in Breaking Bad. He's an immensely talented actor, and has been in many other films, such as Do the Right Thing, The Usual Suspects, The Mandalorian, etc.

Fun fact: Don Ameche (Mortimer) was an actual gentleman in real life. During filming, he hated that his character would be cussing, so when the scripted had him say, “You really believe I'd have a n****r run out business?”, or shouting “F**k him!”, he didn’t know how to respond. Director John Landis and Eddie Murphy convinced him that it was just one take and that’s it.

My mom was an extra in this movie! She was a theater actress in the Philadelphia area at this point in time and heard about extra casting for this film. She ended up being one of the party goers in the Duke and Duke Christmas party scene. And is visible over the shoulders of the main cast for the shots where they're chatting out in the party area. She was also there for the following scene in the same location where Winthorp runs In with the gun and jumps up on the table threatening them. She got a chance to meet all the leads for that sequence, Dan, Eddie, Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche (The Dukes) and said they were all very pleasant to work with. Of the two Duke brother actors (Who were nice in real life, unlike their characters), Ralph Bellamy was very gregarious and friendly to all, and Don was friendly, but quieter apparently. Yes a number of people who were or would be well known later were in this in small parts. Frank Oz, the puppeteer and voice of Yoda is the cop who finds the drugs in Withorp's pocket, Giancarlo Esposito is indeed in the cell with Eddie Murphy early on, and famous musician Bo Diddley is the pawn broker who sells

As a side note one of the baggage handlers was played by Al Franken at the time a writer and sometimes performer on early SNL. He was later an activist and was elected a US Senator (D-MN) until cancelled a few years ago.

The Duke Brothers were played by famous screen actors Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy. Most of their films were made in the 40's, 50's and 60's. Don Ameche was in a Ron Howard film titled "Cocoon" a fantasy about senior citizens discovering a youthful life.

Excellent review. The actor who played Coleman the Butler also played Marcus Brody in the Indiana Jones movies.

There is only one "Trading Places" there's no sequel, but there is a huge cult reference to this movie in Eddie Murphy's "Coming to America" which you should watch next.

"The Prince and the Pauper" by Mark Twain is the origin of this type of "trading places" story. Twain's idea may have been conceived as variation upon the "Man in the Iron Mask" story, told by Dumas.

Coleman, played by Denholm Elliott, is one of the under-rated gems of this movie. The three main stars are all brilliant, as are the Duke Brothers (classic film stars Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy). But Coleman has so many just tiny, subtle moments that say so much about his character. The interaction at the front door when he has to pretend to not know Winthorpe- there is a flinch of pity on Coleman's face just before he closes the door. His former boss may have been a jerk, but Coleman still hates to treat him that way. And my favorite line: "Eggnog??" SO much class-warfare infused into that single word. Brilliant.
