The demon is Pazuzu - the king of the demons of wind. He would offer protection from other demons which is why Merrin says "Evil against Evil". Also, very cool nearly imperceptible cinematic touch - when Merrin pulls the statute head of Pazuzu from that hole at the base of the mound - there is a small gust of wind.

The ''coin'' is a St. Joseph, or St. Christopher medal. The possessed Regan tore it from Fr, Karras' neck, while he was struggling with her. I've heard it stated as long as the medal was on his person, the demon couldn't possess him. As it is, the chain broke, the demon entered Fr. Karras, and you've seen the rest.

    1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱
    2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣
    3. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release.
    4. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for our benefit.
    5. Father Merrin and the demon had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis.
    6. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually her coccyx was fractured when the demon makes her hard fall.
    7. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter.
    8. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her.
9 Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith

☺️I was watching some of the classic game shows from the 60’s and their prize was a carton of cigarette!
☝🏽 All the Celeb’s would smoke during the game show. Once they realized the hazards people slowly stopped.
♥️ I was little when I saw this. People were fainting, throwing up, crying & horrified watching this movie.
♥️ Watching it with so many breaks, I feel it’s hard to really tap into the true horror of this movie…even tho it was the 70’s

The "coin" is a St. Joseph's medal that was found in the dig and Merrin commented "not the same period". It's a Catholic religion piece/symbol and yet buried with old civilization relics in Iraq, no less. Total mystery. It's seen again in Father Karras' dream and it's falling, in slow motion until it lands on steps (a premonition of his own death). If you look super close to the slow motion of the falling chain and medal, you can make out the pattern on the rug in Regan's bedroom, matching up when she rips it off his neck in their battle. The medal is not evil and I don't get how people now, assume that. In the original theatrical release version, Chris hands the medal to Father Dyer as she feels that he would want it since both he and Karras were close friends. In the 2000 re-release "The Version You Never Saw", Father Dyer hands it back to Chris and tells her to keep it. I liked the original theatrical cut of this film. All the exrraa added for the 2000 release were unnecessary and just pandering to a more modern, shortened attention span and slower audience as they needed all the character and plot exposition and CGI touches possible to dare watch an old film. We, who saw it in the 1979's, didn't need the gimmicky assistance. We got our movies back then and any ambiguities, made our brains create a more richer movie watching experience 😂👍

The intro tells us that the demon existed during the primordial times. In fact Fr. Merin has faced this demon before during his previous exorcisms.
The coins or medallions are a Catholic thing. Made by Saints or Holy Men these icons were intended as channels or reminders and direct the faithful to God. During the Iraq scene these medallions were present because faithful has used them as protection.
This movie actually doesnot need a sequel but if you wish please skip PART 2 and instead watch PART 3 which is a direct sequel.

It went right over my head the first couple times I saw this movie that when she turned her head backwards and said in a British accent, "You know what she did? Your c*unting daughter," that she was referring to her killing Burke Dennings. The head spinning during the exorcism, I believe, was a psychological attack, as Merrin warned Damien about. Otherwise, I don't see how the child would be living in the end.

Growing up, we were always told the film was based on an actual case (true), the child was male (true), and it occurred in Europe (false). The young man actually went on to have a long and very successful career as a NASA Engineer, working on the Apollo missions and even the Shuttle. He lived his life however in fear his identity would be discovered, in particular by his NASA colleagues. It was not, instead being revealed in the yr after he passed. I’ve been intrigued and even impressed by the filmmakers’ subtle nod to the young man via the Astronaut at the party ever since.. Who knew?!! It’s quite amazing he was able to remain anonymous as the priests involved kept copious amounts of notes across 2 states (the family moved) and only changed the young man’s first name by flipping 2 letters. They used Doe as his last. He did tell one individual with whom he was particularly close- I was never possessed; I was at times a rather naughty and very mischievous boy. So- there’s that lol In today’s world & climate- it is highly unlikely (if not flat out impossible) that such anonymity would or could remain intact- certainly not for 47-48yrs!!! His name is easily discovered with a simple engine search; I simply choose to not personally declare it.
We’ll never know of course, but one does wonder w the long term success he went on to have as an aerospace engineer, his attention to detail & clear love of order, might he have been at a very high functioning level of the spectrum? Regardless- had to be incredibly difficult- both the childhood experience & then the hiding as an adult. I’m so glad he was able to at least live in the anonymity he desired, sharing only w a very few trusted individuals. Still- 😔
Great reaction & thorough analysis. SUBSCRIBED😊

I think his professional life was rewarding, but his personal a constant burden for him😔 Just very sad… in my opinion of course!!! But again- Agree w you/glad he was able to remain anonymous & have a nothing short of impressive tenure at NASA!!

None of the supernatural stuff portrayed in the movie actually happened. This much has been admitted. I've personally witnessed people having psychotic breaks where they begin acting crazy and even animalistic, etc.. It was once believed that people with epilepsy were possessed by demons. The director, William Friedkin was into filming documentaries and liked to incorporate as realistic elements in to his films, as he did in The French Connection with that famous car chase scene.
He teamed up with the author, William Blatty, of the book "The Exorcist" who based that novel on a real event and told it from the standpoint of a priest.
So Mr. Friedkin stuck as close to the book as possible and considered the movie a highly spiritual one.
After seeing this movie a few times it dawned on me that its underlying theme was faith in crisis.
The demon possessed Reagan, but its main targets was not just its old enemy Father Merrin, but also Karris, the priest whose faith was in weakened. Too much of an opportunity for it to pass up, to revel in undermining the faith of one of God's servants.
So at the end it resulted in the death of both of them.
    2 for 1.
"What a nice day for an exorcist"....

Dietz appears in many of the scenes (especially ones in which the actions/gestures would have been suspect if demanded of a 12-year old), though I think it remains debated how many she appears in (and which ones). It was added years later in the enhanced version, along with Regan's very long first visit to the doctor, and the talk between the priest and the detective at the end. They also added a couple more demon faces than were in the original cut. I prefer the original version. The added scenes don't do much for the movie except make it longer. That doctor office scene goes on forever, and it makes the beginning much too long.
