Agree that there was an Indiana Jones feel to the movie. There was also a healthy dose of comedy, which I enjoyed, such as Evie's trouble with the bookshelves at the beginning.

The Mythbusters proved that the trick with the mirrors and light CAN actually work to illuminate a dark room, though not to that extent. The problem is the sun MOVES during the day, so it would only work for so long.
Beni was SO cruel when he tormented Burns just before his death.
If you watch the first scene with the curator when Evie and Jonathan show him the map, you can tell he burned it deliberately, setting up the reveal he's part of the Medjai.

Imhotep did not literally take their organs. Well yeah, he took their organs (essences from its), but he didn't exactly get their organs he just formed his own/original ones from them (i.e. regenerated). So he hadn't Burns' eyes but he had his own eyes (he needed the organs of others for his own formation to his original body). In short, Imhotep has his own eyes. ;)

The removal of the vital organs in ancient Egyptian burial practices was very common - and the organs were, yes, placed in canopic jars and buried with the mummy. Removal of the organs helped with preserving the body. Keeping them with the body was a method of not losing the unity of the body.

1:10 Fun fact about Patricia Velasquez here: she initially rose to fame as a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. She gets a bit of a meatier role in The Mummy Returns (which you should definitely watch if you enjoyed this one), and let's just say I don't think anyone expected her to be this good an actress.

Your comparison with Indiana Jones is apt. I read that this was originally going to be more of a horror-style remake of the original Mummy monster movie from the 1930s, but it wasn't getting any traction that way. The movie only got made after the writer said, "We need to make this like Indiana Jones" and re-wrote the script in a new style!

In the hanging scene, that is Brendan Fraser getting strangled unconscious for real. The crew thought he was only acting.

Great job Dasha. If you want another Brandon Fraiser movie I recommend Airheads. It also has Steve Buscemi (Donnie from The Big Lebowski) and a lot of other actors you might recognize. I still hope you'll react to Red Heat someday. Keep up the great work.

I've read that the creators intended the Mummy to be the successor of Indiana Jones as at that point they thought there will never be another Indy movie.

One thing I will say if you are the slightest bit interested in ancient Egypt, I have one strong recommendation:
If you ever have the chance to view the Tutankhamun treasures discovered by Howard Carter on an expedition funded by Lord Carnarvon in 1922, do not hesitate - they are mind-blowing!
They are too valuable to leave their home in Egypt now, so it would need another visit (unless you were lucky enough to see them on the visit you referred to with your parents) but I was fortunate enough to see them on the world exhibition tour when it was shown for a period at The British Museum in 1972, and a reproduction of the exhibits is still on display there, accurate enough that they are used as illustrations in books and in documentary films in preference to the originals, which are too valuable for such casual use.
The workmanship in such incredible intricacy and detail, all in gold and inlaid with every precious stone imaginable is completely beyond valuation and is absolutely stunning.
No modern art or treasure comes within miles of what was found in that tomb - the only undisturbed tomb of a Pharoah even found, and priceless does not even begin to describe it.
It is disappointing that the world does not get the chance to see the originals without travelling to Egypt now, but completely understandable, and is in the best interest of their preservation.

this franchise nearly killed him because his body physically couldn't take the beating it was getting

Fun fact: Vision issues weren't really documented until around 350BC, and corrective lenses for nearsightedness weren't a thing until the 15th century. So even if the mummy needed glasses, that thought would have never crossed his mind.

This and I think Titanic were the first movies I watched at a local drive-in theater as a kid.
I hardly get creeped out by movies, but the thought of getting locked in that tomb and getting eaten alive by those beatles kinda freaked me out as a kid.
Kinda sad that there aren't hardly any drive-in theaters in America anymore. Glad I at least got to experience it a few times.

Vosloo turned up on Chuck in its second season, playing a recurring villain that fans called Agent Imhotep, both in reference to this movie, and because in practically every appearance he apparently died only to turn up again.
