This was Alan Rickman's film debut. He was Hans Gruber and was fantastic as in every film he was in. Rest in Peace Mr. Rickman. He is missed.

Such a shame, that Alan Rickman died. His character, Hans Gruber, was among the greatest movie villains in history.
I wonder, if he was a vegan? Many vegans, such as Steve Jobs, die of pancreatic cancer or colon cancer, because vegetables tend to overwork the GI tract. They're 3 or 4 times more difficult to digest than meat, and without the higher nutrition density of meat, a vegan has to eat many more vegetables to make up the deficiency, which works the GI tract even harder.
Of course, people can die of different cancers for many different known and unknown reasons, through no fault of their own, so in any case we lost a terrific actor and by all accounts a great person, way too soon.
"Yippee ki-yay" is an old cowboy expression. Means like "yeehaw" or some other expression of joy and excitement.
Derives from ‘yippee yi yo kayah", a 1930s song. So 19th century western United states. An expression of joy
Lethal Weapon is another great 80s action film that's set at Christmas.

Leathal Weapon IS the reason Die Hard is set st Christmas. Shane Black sets all of his movies (even Iron Man 3) at Christmas time... and Joel Silver (producer of both series) liked the idea so much he added it to Die Hard.

We have that in English too! We say "tough nut" and it can be a stubborn person or a difficult task. Especially if it's something a lot of people have tried and failed at, we call it a "tough nut to crack"

Up here in Canada, when one of your friends kicks his friend (who is another guy, hopefully) in the mid-section, we say, with a grimace, "Ooh, he just got kicked in the nuts!" Lmao! ( :E
She meant to say "tough" nut but ended up using the word for "strong" instead. Basically, Russian also has the phrase "tough nut to crack".

Fun Fact: Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career.
And the wife of the director (or maybe one of the producers, I can't remember) apparently hated the idea of having Alan play that part and fought hard to have him removed. Luckily she was not successful! When Hans falls from the window, that was shot with the real actor onto a green screen mat (so it could be removed later). The director told Alan that they would drop him "on three" but he told the stunt coordinator to drop Alan on TWO instead, which is why he has that look on his face. Alan was reportedly not happy about that but the results were great!

John tells his pal “just call me Roy,” because Hans was comparing him to a cowboy, specifically a movie cowboy. Roy Rogers was a famous Hollywood cowboy actor. And “Yippy-ki-yay” is old cowboy (in movies and old television) talk. In grade school, we learned a song that went, “Yippy ki ya yay! Get along little doggies.”
When moving cattle, they'd make noises like "yip! yip!" behind them -- and that turned into "yippy ki yay" through campfire songs and Hollywood westerns.
An FYI for Dasha ... a doggie is a motherless calf
I always think of Jim Stafford's song "Cow Patty". Though technically that was yippy aye yay. (Like in Ghost Riders In The Sky)

@@LexyThomas134 upon reflection, the old song from elementary school might have been, “Whoopie ti yi yo,” but you can see they’re speaking the same language.
The party John was attending that the company held was the Christmas Party. It was his reason for being there, as well as potentially seeing his kids for the holiday season. It was after the end of the workday, the employees were at their party, security was more lax, which is the exact reason Hans took control of the building. Christmas is at this movie’s core. 😂🎄
Also, it has a strong Family Reconciliation through-line, which is a core part of a lot of Christmas movies, lol
Fun fact: it was a real accident when the stuntman fell down that ventilator shaft. It looks so good the director kept it in.

@ The shaft is a set, it only goes down twenty feet or so and then there's a crash-mat with a *big photograph* of the rest of the shaft sitting on top of it.
The editor didn't know that and, like us, assumed that if the stuntman fell, he would die, and for an instant thought he was going to. Then he had a surreal moment when the stuntman safely stopped falling and made *reality crinkle* like it was the Matrix or something before he realized what he was seeing. It was that editor who decided to cut in the "bad" take because it looked so convincing and scary that it fooled him.
When Gruber compares McClane to John Wayne (an old cowboy actor) the hero replies that he always preferred Roy Rogers because of his sequined shirts. Roy Rogers was an old-time singing-cowboy with a guitar and a horse called Trigger. Yippee Ki Yay was a bit in his song 'I'm an Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande'. It became a catchphrase of his.
I think Disney's Goofy sings it too in a cowboy comical episode.
I think Tom Hanks sings it in Joe Vs the Volcano.

I'm surprised by how Dasha seems to "get" every movie she reacts to. Every other RUclips reactor I've watched has made me roll my eyes at their lack of comprehension at least a few times, but that's never happened when watching Dasha's reactions.

Dasha never makes fun of the movie. She takes it as it is, whether old, new, funny hair, funny clothes she just sees the movie. She has a knack of getting down to the core of a movie, the feel of it, dare I say aesthetic? And like you said she 'gets' it.
And the fact that she does it all in her “2nd” language makes it even more impressive. What an extremely sharp and intelligent young lady.
I agree 100% I love watching as Dasha figures out the meaning and plot twists of the movies she watches. She is VERY intuitive and intelligent! and she's as cute as can be!!! 😘

Of, course it is, besides a Christmas party, Die Hard even has a Christmas Miracle in it, after all people say "It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls off the Nakatomi Plaza" And it has a whole "family reconciliation" through-line like all good Christmas movies.
Time's Square should do a Christmas Eve countdown like they do on New Year's. Only instead of a ball dropping, it's a light-up Hans Gruber.
I have a t shirt that says that with the accompanying shot of him about to fall.

@27:35, during the early to mid 1980’s there were a number of terrorist hijackings/hostage situations around the world. The bad guys would hold people hostage for a few days issue a statement then let them go.
So Ellis (despite being an idiot) was probably thinking this was a similar situation.
This blasé attitude among the public stayed in place until the attacks of 9/11. Now people assume if they are in a terrorist situation especially on a plane that it is a worst case scenario.
I do give Ellis credit for not giving up Holly while pulling such a reckless and doomed stunt.

That's the phrase dubbed when any of the Die Hard films are shown on broadcast TV.
34:45 On set, Alan Rickman was told they'll drop him after counting 1, 2, 3. But when the cameras rolled, they just dropped him straight away. So his "WTF??" face was real.

Bruce Willis was in a tv series called Moonlighting when he got this role. He's also a good singer.
What great about the movie is the very smart writing that moves the plot along. Holly using her maiden name. Holly placing the family photo face down in her office. Both of which delay Hans from finding out about John and Holly being married. The scene when the gunman find the couple having sex in the office and then going into Holly's office and seeing John's clothes lying about and they think it was just another couple having sex so they don't make the connection immediately. Hans faking the accent pretending to be a hostage. John making the connection about Hans being on the roof and needing the detonators. Using the FBI to complete their goal. Great writing that you never see anymore.
The actor to plays Karl is Alexander Godunov who was born in the Soviet Union in 1949 and became a ballet dancer becoming a lead member of the Bolshoi Ballet in 1971. In 1979 while the Bolshoi was touring in New York City he defected to the US. He danced with American Ballet Theatre and acted in a few movies. Unfortunately he was an alcoholic and died in 1995 at the age of 45.

I want to add a trivia note i just now realized today:
"Bill Clay." The bad guys memorized ONE office person's name and identity to assume after they blow the roof.
I used to wonder WHY Hans remembered to call himself "Bill Clay," a person on staff at the tower.
Then I realized that after they blow the roof and escape in an ambulance, if questioned, they can give the name of a "hostage," so they wont be detained by the authorities, if their ambulance gets stopped.
With ALL the hostages killed on the roof, no one will be able to verify their fake identities.
That is great writing that didnt even need explaining....they simply fleshed out the plan.

Yeah, they nailed the basics of story-telling in this movie. Characters, situations, themes all working together to tell a satisfying story.
It's kind of amazing that after a zillion action movies, this one still stands out, because you care about the characters and everything that happens MATTERS.
John’s not some super badass that takes on 20 dudes at once and comes out with out a scratch
The cop played in Family Matters. You'll need to watch that show to understand why we all love his character!

Dasha, I forgot to let you in my previous comment about the actor who played Karl that you might find interesting! Alexander Borisovich Godunov was a Russian-American ballet dancer and film actor. A member of the Bolshoi Ballet, he became the troupe's Premier danseur. In 1979, he defected to the United States.

Fun Fact- Frank Sinatra ( yes ,that Frank Sinatra)- had to be offered the role 1st, - Die Hard novel was sequel to Sinatra's 68' " The Detective '"which he played Det. Joe Leland. Producers knew Frank 's too old & would turn it down - & Joe Leland became John McLane for Bruce Willis.
This is ABSOLUTELY a Christmas movie. Not only is it taking place at Christmas, it's a story about the reconciliation and reunion of a family during the holidays, catalyzed by a shared trauma, as they both have a chance to show how much they really care about each other when all the chips are down. The fact that it's a kickass action movie is just an amazing bonus.

You have to look at why this is a Christmas movie John McClane needed a miracle to get back together with his wife he needed a miracle to get past all the terrorist to get save his wife and the hostages plus he brought a Christmas present the big teddy bear for his wife or daughter! He got that Christmas miracle at the end all miracles come in different forms this is still one of the best action movies of all time which the director took a chance on Bruce Willis who was a comedian at the time in itself was a miracle because in the end it had 4 more Die Hard movies afterwards! Miracles All Around Dasha Christmas is full of Miracles!!

fun fact - the look of shock/surprise on Hans Gruber's face (the late, great Alan Rickman) as he started to fall was REAL ... the stunt crew played a trick on him when he said he would do the stunt himself, releasing him into the fall before he was prepared for it (it was a 40ft drop backwards onto some crash pads).

Ellis' only redeeming feature is that he didn't tell Hans about Holly.
It was an 80's thing in movies and tv to show upper "management" of police departments as stupid, incompetent, arrogant or corrupt. The regular cops were usually shown as good guys who had to find some way to do their jobs despite guys like Deputy Chief Dwayne Robinson.

Best action movie of all time. It's so great since the hero is not just some invincible god. He gets hurt badly, and still prevails. Amazing humor too. "I read about them in Time magazine" used to crack me up so hard.
Karl, the tall blonde bad guy, was played by Alexander Godunov ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Godunov ). He was member of the Bolshoi Ballet and defected in the late 1970s, acted in a few movies in late 80s & early 90s. He sadly passed away in 1995.
People say “he’s talking to himself” when shit first goes down, but it never struck me as strange. I talk to myself in an overly stressful situation. Sometimes you need to hear things out loud.

It was his first movie _at all,_ I believe. Before this he hadn't been in a film before, he was a stage actor. What an amazing actor to become one of the most iconic action villains ever on his very first film?
I have watched Die Hard in 1989, and in my opinion it`s one of the best action movies, I`ve ever seen.

I tink part of the reason people love this as an xmas movie is we all need a break from the usual sappy movies.
As always, your reaction is amazing. Fun fact, when they dropped the actor playing Hans (Alan Rickman), they told him they were going to drop him on the count of 3. They dropped him on 2 so the terror on his face is legit. Another fun fact, Bruce Willis started doing comedy, this was his action break out role.
Bruce Willis(John McLain), was currently in a comedy, drama, romance TV series called Moonlighting. With Cybil Shepherd during the making of this film. They were running a Private Investigator Agency together.
That series is where I first saw Bruce Willis.
This is among my favorite Christmas movies.
Karl was played by Alexander Godunov, a classical ballet dancer who defected from the Soviet Union in 1979. He also has a part in a movie staring Harrison Ford, that I think you will enjoy, Witness (1985).
He was also in "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks and he did a wonderful job playing a comedic role.
Hey Dasha, when you mentioned that the Russian translation of "Die Hard" was "Strong Nut", it reminded me of the Japanese alternative title for this movie which was, appropriately, "The Reluctant Hero", considering that's exactly what Bruce Willis' character in this movie is, a Reluctant Hero

‘Roy Rogers was a Western movie star and singer in the 1940s. He had a song called ‘I’m an Old Cowhand’ and one of the repeated lyrics was ‘ Yippy O Ki Ay, Yippy O Ki Ay’.
Another 40s song was re done by Johnny Cash. ‘Ghost Riders in the Sky’ which had a similar lyric, “yippie yi o, yippie yi yay”
Following the theme of referencing these classic westerns the lyric was misquoted a bit and was in John’s memorable catchphrase ‘yippie ki yay…’
1:30 Dasha's cute resoonse to seeing the Teddy bear reminds me that, when 'Die Hard, ' first came out, one of the reviewers described Reginald VelJohnson's character , Al Powell, as "the Teddy-bear-like cop."
The guy with the long blond hair who survived in the end is Russian. His name is Alexander Godunov and he is a former ballet dancer :)

Great movie. I was not a fan of Bruce Willis at the time but a friend of mine strongly encouraged me to see it so I did and I'm glad. Well written, acted and directed. When Hans (RIP Alan Rickman) falls from the window, that was shot with the real actor onto a green screen mat (so it could be removed later). My favorite Christmas movie! So many great scenes. Now we can do anything with computers. 80s & early 90s movies didn't have that luxury. What they could do was build tension and Die Hard NAILS that. That combined with generally shorter running times kept the pacing quick and cut out most of the filler.
I love this movie. I watch it every Christsmas. Alan Rickman is just perfect in his role. If you watch Die Hard 2 it happens at Christmas too and ends on the same song as the credits roll. And if you watch Die Hard 3 there is a call back to this one in there. Also when Hans falls at the end Rickman's expression is genuine because he was let go on 2 instead of 3, in the countdown.
Edit: If you like quick funny comeback lines then check out The Last Boy Scout (1991). Bruce Willis is hilarious in that one with Damon Wayans. Merry Christmas

Some movie trivia for you, in the scene where Hanz fell to his demise Alan Rickman had on a harness with a short-ish fall and a set time for the release but unbeknownst to him the crew released a few seconds early. The 80’s had several buddy cop movies. They are the best! Die Hard 2 & 3 are both good, along with the four Lethal Weapon movies. Merry Christmas to you as well!
"Yippee-ki-yay" is an old fashioned cowboy call. The classic black-and-white T.V. cowboy that they just mentioned, Roy Rogers, sang a song called "I'm An Old Cowhand From The Rio Grande" that included the lyric "Yippie-yi-yo-ki-yay." He sang another called "Git Along Little Dogies" with the lyric "Whoopie-ti-yi-yo." (You can find videos of these on RUclips.) Apparently, he also said, "Yippee-ki-yay, kids," on his T.V. show, so that's where John's line comes from.

I think you're the first person I've seen react to die Hard who didn't suddenly shout "Snape!" when Alan rickman first appeared on screen.

Hey Dasha, love your vids! One of the things that you may not have gotten is at the end when John & Hans face off and John starts laughing hysterically while hiding a gun behind him is that John was laughing at Hans’ accent when he says “mother” (you know what). Hans phonetically says “Mad-da Fah-ka” and that gets John going
I believe that there is no better ambassador for United States-Russian relationships than Dasha. I always leave her videos thinking how sweet and warm the Russian people can be.

I think the initial part of the fall was on a sound stage. The actual “fall” was done onsite with a stuntman.

A tribute to the writing is that whenever Dasha asks a question about what is happening the movie almost always shows the answer quickly. Often they even use the same phrase she does.

Karl, was played by Alexander Godunov who was a Russian Ballet dancer who defected to the United States in 1979.
Glad you finally got to see the movie that made Bruce Willis a larger than life hero. William Atherton, who played the annoying news man also was in Ghostbusters. Alexander Godunov, who played Karl was also in The Money Pit with Tom Hanks and in Witness with Harrison Ford. Alexander sadly passed away in 1995 of "natural causes". Our computer guru Theo was played by Clarence Gilyard of Walker Texas Ranger (Chuck Norris). Of course we all know who Alan Rickman is. Directed by John McTiernan, he then did The Hunt For Red October in 1990 then Medicine Man in 1992, both with Sean Connery. I highly recommend both of those movies.
Huh. I never made the connection between Theo and Ranger Trivette before, but it's really obvious now that you mention it. I guess that goes to show how well a good actor's performance can make them seem like a totally different person :)
McTiernan also directed Predator in the previous year, which Dasha would probably enjoy, given that she liked the Terminator and Alien movies :)
Clarence was also on the last season of "CHIPS" and "Matlock".

fun fact: the terrorist who steals the chocolate bar is Al Leong, who was in almost every good action movie in the 1980's. He like a human "Wilhelm Scream" of 80's bad guys. :)

Nice choice! This was as groundbreaking an action movie in its day as The Matrix and John Wick were when those movies were first released - mainly because Die Hard featured a protagonist would could get killed or injured, rather than the heroes of action movies before, who were basically killing machines who could kill anyone they came across.
Also, most of the terrorists were played by models, which is why they are so good looking.

In Germany the title of the movie is "Stirb langsam" which means "Die slowly" in english.

Dasha, did you know that one of the actors was a former dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet? The long-haired blond man ("Karl") who got hung on a chain towards the end was Alexander Godunov, who was born on Sahalin Island and made a career in ballet and now acting. He was a good friend of Mikhail Baryshnikov, and died in 1995.

It was still a blast a couple of years ago when I last got the opportunity to watch it in a theatre. It comes up every now and then here and if I notice, I tend to catch it.
