There's some interesting backstory if you read between the lines (and pay attention to the dialogue). Pretty much all the men in the movie are survivors of WW1, and it's changed them in various individual ways. Jonathan's a cynic who doesn't care about anything but Evie and himself, Rick fights for any cause he feels he can stomach, Beni has gone full screw-everyone-else mode, and the old pilot just wanted to join his dead friends but couldn't just shoot himself.

Was 15 when this came out. All the hype was surrounding the Phantom Menace which was coming out soon so I thought "Let me watch this in the meantime." Turns out I loved this film so much more and it has only gotten better with time. To this day, I have a soft spot for nerdy librarians like Evelyn. The whole cast was just right.

I’ve always felt that this is a movie that is elevated by an exceptional cast. It might’ve been a modestly successful B or C level film, but the casting of the individual actors, plus the way they work with each other & their overall chemistry really brings this film up to a higher level than the script may suggest. You just can’t help but root for the characters, even the ones on the morally grey side.
Rachel Weisz is so good in one of her earliest roles, not to mention completely adorable as Evelyn & Brendan Fraser is great. Throw in John Hannah as Evie’s brother, Oded Fehr as the magi & Kevin James O’Conner as Beni & you have the makings of a near perfect starting cast, but even the smaller players fit so well together.

B movie? This movie was a huge block buster that summer. In the top ten grossing movies that year. I saw it on opening night. Apart from the unfortunate (and in my opinion careless) historical errors, this movie was exceptionally well done. Acting, dialogue, practical effects; a modern classic.

I LOVE the chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. So believable and wholesome.
Also there are a couple noteworthy cinematic hanges to REAL asprects of Egyptian history:
Real scarabs aren't flesh eating insects. They're literally just dung beetles and Egyptians would plae scarab amulets inbetween layers of linen wrappings during mummification as a means of proteting the desceased's soul while it's gping through the underworld's trials.
Contrary to its name, the actual Book Of The Dead is a papyrus scroll used during burial, not to resurrect someone from the grave.

We had a cat named SweetPea. We named him that because he had anger issues. He was a large cat: matte black, green eyes, and would actually growl at people. I have no idea what kind of cat he was but he was wild. He loved watching hockey on the big screen (tried to get the puck with his paws), and he was a rocker, would lay right in front of the floor speakers when Metallica or Pantera was playing. You could pet him but he wasnt happy about it.

The thing I liked about this movie is that everyone contributed to the victory, even Johnathan. It was great because both the leads were capable in their realms and were successful even though they had their flaws. Evelyn and Johnathan had the same trait of making bad things happen, but overcoming them. Johnathan lost the book but saved himself with his Imhotep chant. Evie wrecked the library and released the mummy but still kicked butt when needed and used her own skills and knowledge to overcome obstacles. I loved the part where Johnathan's trying to describe the hieroglyph that he can't translate and she's helping him while chained down as the prospective sacrifice. 😀
Arnold Vosloo made a great "villain" in the movie as Imhotep, but by the same token all he was really trying to do was save the woman he loved, just like Rick was in the end. 😀

Stephen Sommers, director, drew inspiration from not only the original 1932 Mummy but called it a cross between "Indiana Jones Meets Jason And The Argonauts or Clash Of The Titans meets The Ten Commandments."
Sommers was picked to make the project happen as Joe Dante, John Landis, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven, George Romero Clive Barker and Mick Garris were considered for directing.
It was Sommers blockbuster hit as his last film, DEEP RISING, bombed at the box office.

    • @snorpenbass4196
      @snorpenbass4196 2 года назад +4

Sommers is really, really good at pulp adventure (literary or movie serial). The Mummy is, as above, then there's Deep Rising, which is a tribute to the Weird Tales pulps (especially the ones by Robert E Howard, who wrote anti-heroes just like Finnegan in Deep Rising). The movie Van Helsing is basically all those "Dracula vs The Wolfman/Frankenstein/etcetera" movies in one big mash-up.

There were 2 Sequels released in 2001 and 2008:
    The Mummy Returns
The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor.
After Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor was released, it received mixed to negative Reviews by Critics and fans.
In 2015, it was revealed they would reboot the series, with Universal Pictures trying to cash in on the MCU.
The Mummy would be remade for 2017, while Frankenstein and Bride Of Frankenstein would be filmed back to back for 2018 and 2019, as well as a Dracula reboot and a Wolf Man reboot being remade, but all of these films would be scrapped as The Mummy 2017 recieved negative Reviews by Critics, with 17% on RT.

Even when you watch the scene with subtitles you can see that when he calls Evie anaksunamun there's a question mark at the end indicating he's questioning who it is, and if you look and listen closely you can sorta see a look of confusion on what's left of his face and hear a slight tone of confusion in his voice

Oddly, they show five canopic jars during mummification, but as far as I know only four were used. Each represented a son of Horus. Lungs were removed and placed in Hapi, the baboon headed jar and was protected by Nephthys. Hapi represented the north. Duamutef (the jackal headed jar) contained the stomach and represented the east and was protected by Neith. Imsety (the human headed jar) contained the liver and represented the south and was protected by Isis. Qebehsenuef (the falcon headed jar) contained the intestines represented the west and was protected by Serqet. The heart was not placed in a jar because it was considered the soul and had to remain in the body. A later tomb was found with six jars, but I believe it was discovered that it was a specific request. It was after the period when regular embalming was being done. Prior to the canopic jars having specific heads, they had plain lids.

I don't know if you've watched any really old films from the first Golden Age of Hollywood on the channel, but this film is a modernized remake of the 1932 film The Mummy, starring Boris Karloff in the title role. Still, it might be fun for you to watch that old classic film and see how it compares to the modern remake.

The British Regular Army soldiers were well trained enough with them that when the German's first ran into them in WW1 they thought they were being fired on by machine guns. With the possible exception of the 1921 Thompson Submachine gun, it would not be definitely surpassed as a military long arm until WW2.

This movie is literally just dumb fun. A guilty pleasure for a lot of people! It tells a good story with characters that have such wonderful chemistry that you don't even care about the historical inaccuracies or the few plot holes. literally the definition of good dumb fun.

This is a classic movie I'd completely forgotten about! I really enjoyed it, and pretty sure I saw it when it came out of DVD or VHS - brings back memories of not only a great movie, but the missed fun of going with my mum and brother to the local video store and finding a movie to borrow. There was something extra bonding about arguing and fighting over what we should watch and mum telling us to knock it off 🤣
But also then getting only 1 or maybe 2 movies to enjoy for a week or a month made it a more special time...not that streaming isn't a bad thing, do love the convenience.
Loved the reaction! Took me a minute to catch onto your Cosplay! You do a fantastic job with every movie and creating some create costumes!
Oh, I didn't see any mention of it in the comments when skimming, but a bit of trivia on the film: I've read a few different accounts, but Brendan did the hanging stunt himself which almost killed him as he was actually being chocked and completely passed out (In fact from the sounds of the way he described it one video, it was probably less a lack of oxygen but actually blood flow restriction which is a lot more dangerous). Rather scary and I can't watch the hanging scene without cringing now

Another good movie with Brendan Fraser is "Airheads". It also stars Steve Buscemi, & Adam Sandler and has a whole bunch of others in smaller roles as well (2 Ghostbusters, Chris Farley, etc). It's about a band using an unconventional method to get their big break (trying to minimize spoilers).

Still such a super-fun movie but I love how Jen said she wasn't a fan of Brendan Fraser in the '90s. She was a toddler at the time so of course she wasn't a fan. ;-) Also, I've seen this film a few times now but had never noticed before how often Rick calls the other group there at Hamunaptra "the Americans" or "our American colleagues." That would insinuate that he is not American. I know Fraser is American (though his parents were Canadian) but I had always assumed Rick was American based on his accent in the film sounding much more American than Canadian. Not important at all really just something I had never noticed. Another great post, Jen. Cheers.

I had a neighbor girl that absolutely loved this movie when I was teen. She looked just like the lead actress.
I crushed on her really hard and we saw the second one in theaters together and started dating. Fond memories.
