@@PurpleLugia Own no-spoilers headcanon is that it's actually tied to Shrek 2 and all this was planned. Except because of Shrek it all went off the rails.
This movie is a satire about disney tropes. This was really refreshing for the time were every fairytale animated movie were almost always the same old tropes.
As everyone has already said, Shrek 2 is a work of art. In terms of sequels It's up there with The Godfather Part ll, Aliens, The Empire Strikes Back, T2: Judgement Day, Spider-Man 2, & The Dark Knight & is the best animated direct sequel of all time imo
Yes the scene in Duloc is making fun of Disneyland. Actually this whole movie is basically a hit piece against Disney in general, the guy who ran Dreamworks had previously been one of the higher ups at Disney and he even based Lord Farquad (Lord F*ckwad) on the guy who forced him out.
Voice actors doing their parts separately and never actually interacting is the norm, when the two main actors from The Road to El Dorado did key scenes together it was a big deal because of how rare it was to do that. It's a lot easier (and sometimes cheaper) for voice actors to not have to accommodate everyone else's schedules, even if it's not necessarily better for the movies.

The mechanical dancing people/song when Shrek and Donkey enter Farquad’s castle is a joke/reference to It’s A Small World, which was a boat ride at Disney World that would take you “around the world” to see different cultures. It was also the song that played during ride (and while you stood in line), so by the time you waited in line and got through the line it had burrowed its way into your cerebral cortex and laid thousands of ear worm eggs.

To this day, Eddie Murphy is the only actor to get a Bafta award nomination for a voice over role for Shrek. The Nutty Professor is one of the funniest movies of all time, in that he played multiple characters with different personalities and the excellent makeup won an Oscar too. There's other gems like Boomerang and his Oscar nominated performance in Dreamgirls with Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson. He may have had a career downturn at first but then Dolemite Is My Name rejuvenated him back. He won an Emmy for returning to SNL as a host and just received the Golden Globe honorary award where he cracked a Will Smith joke and there's a fourth Beverly Hills Cop on the way so he's doing just fine.
The voice cast doing their performances seperately is actually the most common way of doing it when it comes to animated shows and movies. Sometimes they'll have two or three of the voice actors record together, and on a rare occasion they'll get a larger group together in a room, but for the most part each individual member of the voice cast do their performance alone in a recording booth, reading from a script and getting notes and suggestions from the director.
A really cool movie you should review, Ladyhawke about 2 people cursed never to be together (for reasons) with Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick. My first comment on your channel guys, been watching you for months and gotta say that this is my favorite video so far for lots of reasons; Simone's laugh and giggling is just lovely beyond any reason; and George dude I've been thinking this for a while now you're the kind of person that everyone should have as a friend hands down. I love and appreciate what the both of you are doing, thanks for everything and keep up the good work, so much love from Alaska!!
I really should watch that some time. I had a VHS as a kid with the film's last few minutes recorded since the recording was on a timer to catch whatever was on right after it. lol
Fiona's curse states it will end with 'love's true form' not her own true form. She is a human princess, but her kinda ogre-ish personality and mannerisms led to her developing feelings for an ogre and pretty much made her an ogre at heart. So the release of the spell, 'love's true form', was basically just making her outside match her inside.
Excited to see you get to Shrek 2. It improves in almost every way. Better looking animation, better dialogue, funnier jokes, and all the new characters are great.

Shrek 2 is one of those rare sequels that completely blows the first one away. Also it includes one of the best instances of diegetic music in all of film.
There's a theory going around that the reason Shrek pauses before telling Donkey his name was because he'd been on his own so long, he either forgot his name or never had one because his parents were terrible. He may very well have just chosen a name on the spot. That "random-ass name" line from George may have been spot on lol
If you're looking for more Eddie Murphy, it's a bit of an oddball, but "Dolemite is my name" is genuinely one of his best performances. He really seems like he's into it, unlike most of what he did the decade or so before that.
It's more of a back and forth after a time. Like he's have great performances in Shrek and Dreamgirls (mediocre in Bomnerang) but also do crap movies like Norbitt and Dr. Doolittle. Or he'd do Nutty Professor which was fun but then the sequels which were terrible. I never saw Pluto Nash. Dolemite was a recent movie and it was really good.
Honestly, Eddie Murphy's Vampire In Brooklyn was very entertaining (to me, at least), and he played multiple characters in that. But I think that was where it started going downhill - when he started playing off just himself and not really anyone else.
One of my favorite DreamWorks intros was from one from the old Metal of Honor games. Where the boy is fishing but threw it down and put on a WWII US helmet and jumped off with a parachute only for it to get caught on the moon and and while the boy is hanging there he does a little laugh. Fun Fact: Metal of Honor was made by Steven Spielberg and is the only game to have won an Academy Award.
The stage musical based on this movie is one of my favorite shows. As a makeup artist, I have done this show with community theaters, high school theaters, etc- so many I've lost count. They don't use the pop songs from the film; they wrote all new songs, and they're all great. The irreverent sense of humor is all in there. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry. It's a really funny, great show. If you get a chance to see it in your area, I highly recommend.
Disneyland is in California. Disneyland is 2 parks- Disneyland and California Adventure Park. You can visit each park in a day- so would likely only need 2 days to explore both. All of Disneyland can fit inside the parking lot of Disney World- which is in Florida. Disney World is 4 parks- Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. You would need a minimum of 2 days just do see all of Magic Kingdom (3-4 if you want to hit all the rides). But yes- they have weird animatronics and many rides/attractions take photos that you can buy after. I think Fiona stayed an ogre because her true love was an ogre.
Eddie Murphy did The Nutty Professor where he played a bunch of characters, but that was actually really well received. His massive flop was The Adventures of Pluto Nash, a $100M movie that grossed $7M worldwide. After that he stopped being cast in huge movies as the lead but he was still a prominent voice actor and he made some interesting indie films. He never really disappeared.
He played a bunch of characters in Coming to America first. But yes what he did in The Nutty Professor was very well received. It just continued to prove his amazing comedic talent and no one else was able to replicate what he did there.
@@nsasupporter7557 Yes I know. For being a remake, it's a good thing that the Eddie version wasn't a copy of the original at all and stood out well differently.
A couple of the best Eddie Murphy movies you haven't done include Bowfinger, which you mentioned (considered a return to form at the time for both Martin and Murphy after a string of misses), Dolemite is My Name, and the first Nutty Professor (definitely not the sequel, which is more the inspiration for the Jack Black scene in Tropic Thunder even though they both have scenes similar to the one in the fake trailer). Doctor Dolittle is OK. Murphy's actually had a couple of rough patches through his career -- the '90s period that includes stuff like The Distinguished Gentleman and Vampire in Brooklyn was one, and then he had another one in the 2000s, with stuff like Showtime and The Adventures of Pluto Nash. They may have explanations for Fiona's true form in the sequel, but I would say that Simone's interpretation of the ending is true for the filmmakers at the time they were making this movie and not thinking about future movies.
I'd add The Golden Child as a must see. For me, it seemed like there was a break where Murphy went from his older stuff like Beverly Hills Cop (or, even older, his standup routines like Raw) to making kids movies. Some of those movies, like Shrek, were pretty good. But I think I prefer his older stuff.
I always loved Eddie Murphy. And to be truthful, i don't even see him as having a downfall. He just had some fases, was always hilarious, but some movies where more sucessful than others. At some point people just don't go to see another Eddie Murphy movie. Not because they don't like him, but because he already see soo many of him. I think it's just a normal thing. Don't call it a downfall, he just made a lot of movies, for so long, that eventually the thing fase away.
I was in the car with my younger cousin and Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah came on the radio. My cousin nonchalantly says that he preferred the original, and when I asked where he had even heard Leonard Cohen's version he gave me a blank stare before saying, "No, Shrekelujah." Youths, man.

I've always enjoyed the Beverly Hills Cop trilogy. I know Eddie started doing kids movies because of his own kids. He didn't want them knowing their father only doing adult themed comedies or raunchy stuff like his stand-ups. That, IMO, is why in his career slipped up for a while. Tower Heist and A Thousand Words are good movies too.

To answers George question... I think that "Du Loc" is just a reference to Lancelot Du Lac (Lancelot of the Lake), from the Arthurian legend. Plus in front of his castle, if you pay attention to the sign, there is a "Lancelot" parking.
A lot of times they make a comment about the song but they aren't able to play enough of it for us to even know what song they're talking about! It would be very helpful if they sang the songs. Plus, Simone's voice is really good! And George's singing makes me feel better about my own. :)
A tale has circulated that Maurice Tillet was the inspiration for the animated movie character Shrek, based on the resemblance; but there's no evidence for this and it's almost certainly not true. He had a condition called acromegaly which is usually caused by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland leading to bone overgrowth and thickening. It's really just a coincidence that he has similar body proportions to Shrek and married a beautiful woman. He was also a lawyer, he only became a wrestler when he realized that his appearance would probably limit his success in the court room.
8:22 Yes, it was a childhood nursery rhyme. What they say in the movie is literally almost word for word the rhyme. They are just speaking it rather than signing. 👍
Before I saw it in this movie I never knew that this song also existed in English. I only knew it in my native Dutch but recognised it right away. They do sound very similar.
My ex-wife/next door neighbor (long story) worked in the music department for Dreamworks Animation and worked on this film, and most other DW animated films for the next 5-ish years - I think she was the one who pitched "I'm a Believer" for the end, if I remember correctly - so I was saw this at a crew screening long before it came out. I admittedly didn't think it was the second coming of animated films at the time, but definitely recognize its place. Definitely watch the sequel which is the best of the series, but you could technically stop there and not really miss much. I'm sure multiple people have already commented that the Duloc puppet song at the entrance is a take off on the 'It's a Small World' ride at DisneyLAND in CALIFORNIA, and you guys would actually love it, especially now with the amazing Star Wars rides. Also, Universal Studios theme park, a jaunty 15 minute walk down the street from my apartment, has the Shrek 4-D ride/experience/something something and it's fun-ish if you're a fan, but I think most people really visit for Harry Potter World and the new Nintendo World. Come on down and visit in the winter when you need a break from the cold!
There is _so_ much body positivity in this film. It's brilliant. Also, 26:50 brought Cohen to the world's attention. Not that he was unknown before, but he was somewhat niche. The Hallelujah cover had an entire new generation discovering his work, and catapulted him back into mainstream consciousness.
also known as the Drury Lane Dicer, was the first known serial killer in England. His name was Frederic Thomas Lynwood, and he was born in 1563 and died in 1612. In Victorian England, it was common for families to have fresh foods delivered to their homes. A popular morning meal was muffins. The Muffin Man would make his deliveries just like other bakers, but he would lure children away from their homes by playfully tying a string it a muffin and pulling it away from the steps where the parcel lay. The kids, likely thinking this was a fun game, would chase the muffins, which led to The Muffin Man’s bakery, where he would kill the children. But not before torturing them.

I have a theory/headcanon that the witch cursed Fiona to turn into specifically an ogre at night because Fiona probably misbehaved like one as a child, very un-"princess" like- so it was like the curse was a lesson saying "Either act like a proper princess so you can live as a human, or be an ogre for the rest of your life because that's where you belong otherwise (no one else will love you for how you are)."
@@PurpleLugia Own no-spoilers headcanon is that it's actually tied to Shrek 2 and all this was planned. Except because of Shrek it all went off the rails.
@@PurpleLugia It's explained in the second movie why Fiona was cursed. Please watch it, it's amazing!
This movie is a satire about disney tropes. This was really refreshing for the time were every fairytale animated movie were almost always the same old tropes.
Can we talk about the shock on Simone’s face when George told her about “Donkey Shows”? 😂😂😂
It's time to add Clerks 2 to the list, I guess?

Whatever you do, do NOT skip the post-credits scene when you do Shrek 2. It's so good.
Isn't it only the donkey dragons?
Out of all the movies Simone has not previously seen on this channel, this one shocks me the most for some reason 😆
Other non Disney animated movies that were good were…
Ferngully,
Iron Giant,
Quest for Camelot,
Cats Don’t Dance,
Sinbad,
Anastasia,
Prince of Egypt,
Thumbelina,
Swan Princess,
An American Tail
I would add Titan A.E. as an overlooked non-Disney animated movie.
@@beappleby a couple of the ones that I was referring to aren’t necessarily overlooked… some of them were. But yeah, Titan AE is one that’s completely forgotten

Yeah, I heard that they did that for HttYD, too - had the voice actors actually playing off each other. Oh! and wasn't there a story about Mike Meyers recording everything, then deciding that Shrek needed to have that accent, so he had to re-do everything?
as a child, i would ALWAYS start crying at the hallelujah scene and my parents found it so hilarious. im so glad you guys decided to react to this movie. truly one of the best animated movies from the 2000's.

I've never met anyone who likes that ride. It might be the most universally HATED ride at any of the Disney parks! Hell, it might be the most hated ride in the history of EVER!! lol

We need more Simone singing! We need Eddie Murphy in Bowfinger!
Both her and George have pretty good singing voices.
I second Bowfinger! Come to the comments to recommend it!
We need to build George's confidence! He's a tenor for sure!
Bowfinger is great, you must react to this.
Can’t believe you haven’t seen this one Simone. Absolute classic. The perfect fairytale.
I only bring it up because it involves both parties changing into different (you'll see) at dusk n dawn. Kinda like Fiona changing at night
With such an original take on fantasy armor.

I really should watch that some time. I had a VHS as a kid with the film's last few minutes recorded since the recording was on a timer to catch whatever was on right after it. lol
@@gamerbear84 I think its a wonderful Eddie Murphy movie. You will enjoy this I'm sure.
Simone should sing more. She's got a lovely voice.

To me one of the best Eddie Murphy movies will always be Bowfinger! An underrated gem and my favourite comedic performance by Eddie!
YES! Bowfinger is GREAT!
Stop saying underrated!! Why does everybody have to call everything “underrated” on every RUclips video there is?? Since when did “underrated” become everybody’s favorite word??
Much like 'iconic'; often used, seldom accurate.
@@thewonkyembouchure well those words you mentioned aren’t so used inaccurately like “underrated.” That’s the biggest issue… the word “underrated” is misused constantly. Most of what people are referring to aren’t underrated at all

Also, stop telling me which words I'm allowed to use!
In a surprise twist: Simone has a great singing voice.
Great reactions to Shrek, from Simone and George.
Fun Movie Fact: Mike Myers had recorded the whole Shrek movie, in a slightly over the top Canadian accent, when he suddenly realised it would be better if Shrek had a Scottish accent, so re-dubbed the whole movie, before release. :)
They already had done lots of the animation by then, so they had do redo that part, too. But they went with it.

I'm never the commenter to say this but, can't imagine how Simone missed this one! I feel like it'd be impossible to avoid.
I don't believe I've heard you two laugh at a movie more than this!!
Interesting fact about Shrek he was supposed to be voiced by Chris Farley he had a majority of his lines done, and he died shortly after. That's why the movie came out in 2001 and was voiced by Mike myers and not released in 1997

26:50 Wow. Beautiful singing voice on Simone!
"Not my gumdrop buttons!"
Gingie is the best part of Shrek (and the puppet song at Duloc). Shrek 2 is superior on almost everything.
If you're looking for more Eddie Murphy, it's a bit of an oddball, but "Dolemite is my name" is genuinely one of his best performances. He really seems like he's into it, unlike most of what he did the decade or so before that.
He was pretty enjoyable in Bowfinger.
"Meet Dave" is an enjoyable later film with Eddie Murphy also.
Pluto Nash is amazing and you should never ever ever watch it.
It's a time capsule of when Randy Quaid was still sane.

I love how Shrek's voice is just Fat Bastard from The Spy Who Shagged Me.

He’s known for doing that in most of his movies, not just Nutty Professor.
He played a bunch of characters in Coming to America first. But yes what he did in The Nutty Professor was very well received. It just continued to prove his amazing comedic talent and no one else was able to replicate what he did there.
@@navidhudson7065 did you know that Nutty Professor was a remake of the Jerry Lewis movie that came out in 1963?

Distinguished Gentlemen is great.
Murphy was also great in Dreamgirls.
@@dannykent6190 to be fair, I don't have an opinion on them personally, just noting that they were box office bombs at the time.

The third one is the worst in the series but its definetly a good watch if you dont compare it to the others
17:19 I love this line, because once you know how things turn out the meaning changes wonderfully.
You have to watch Shrek 2 - because it’s hilarious, yes, but mostly because I’d so enjoy your reactions!
Also, you simply MUST watch Carl Reiner’s “The Jerk” (1979). It was voted 48th Greatest Comedy of All Time, #20 on Bravo’s 100 Funniest Movies, and The 100 Greatest Performances of All Time was given to Steve Martin in his FIRST starring role in a feature film.

@Ricketik65 oh damn, maybe it originated there? I seriously doubt all these rhymes started in English anyways. 🤷♂️ lol
Her true form does get explained in the second film
also known as the Drury Lane Dicer, was the first known serial killer in England.
"She actually comes from an ogre family" is quite the novel take on Shrek. Kinda changes the meaning of the ending but sure!
