    George, there were a LOT of Vikings who actually settled in Scotland and Northern England during their medieval invasions. Many stayed and permanently integrated into their new home. So historically, a Viking with a Scottish accent is not that weird… though in this historical instance, they probably didn’t have modern Scottish accents. lol

    Here are the fun facts:
    -The animators sat through aerodynamics classes to make the dragons' flights as realistic as possible.
    -Simone, you were right about Toothless being cat-like because they based themselves off the movements of a cat to animate him.
    -His little hesitation when approaching his nose to Hiccup's hand was actually an animation glitch, but they left it because it worked so well.

      The "animation glitch" story is an urban myth, however. There was apparently a glitch in the pre-render of the earlier scene where Toothless is bound - the "camera" passed through his wing. The hesitation before the first touch was deliberate though.
      And yes, there's a fair bit of Stitch in him too - same directors.

      It was just perfect for Toothless. He was the most "catlike" of all of them. And it does so much for that dragon's character! Just a perfect decision by the animators to utilize what they had to work with, in such a way!

    This trilogy is pretty much the standard bearer for family films. Charm, heart, humour, but also enough depth in what the characters go through that you can't just dismiss them as fun popcorn fluff.
    It's amazing just how much more meaningful the flying sequences felt in this compared to Avatar, and there are so many fun relationships between the characters, with great chemistry between Astrid and Hiccup. All the films in the trilogy are fantastic for reasons like that

  • @jaykay3784
    @jaykay3784 Год назад +157

    When dealing with animation, it's usually the voices first because the animators can use idioms and gestures the actors make to create the same feel the voice actor was trying to convey. A lot of Jay Baruchel went into Hiccup.

      _Western_ animation usually records the voices first, then animates to that. Most Asian animation is done animation first, which is why even in their native language Asian voice actors sometimes have to use odd cadences to match the mouth flaps. There are of course exceptions to both.

    • @JohnSmith-wd5ml
      @JohnSmith-wd5ml Год назад +2

      I was gonna say, ive seen a lot of behind the scene for animated stuff and ive always seen voice actors looking at monitors with the actual animation on it while recording.. i guess they were asian animation?

      Which is why I always prefer watching movies and tv in the original language, both live-action and animation. (But I will watch dubbed anime if the dub is very good dubs, i.e. Full Metal Alchemist, Chainsaw Man and Death Note.)

    • @HiddenWindshield
      @HiddenWindshield Год назад +5

      @@JohnSmith-wd5ml I was simplifying just a bit for the sake of being concise. Often the animators will create storyboards or animate keyframes (i.e. at a low frame rate) to help the voice actors understand what's going on around the characters, then come behind them and do the final animation to match the voices. Sometimes the voice actors will just read from scripts or teleprompters, and 100% of the animation will be done after. It just depends on the director.
      Also, animation first was more common in ye olden days, so a lot of e.g. classic Disney stuff was done that way.

    9:22 yup. That's how animation is done most of the time. The actors record their lines first and then the animators bring that performance to life, usually by recording themselves acting out the lines in a reference video.

    John Powell is frickin awesome writing the music for this movie.
    In the "test drive" scene, the first part of the music was Toothless theme. And Hiccup is not piloting the flight as he is still looking at cheat sheet.
    When Hiccup starts to take control and they dive down, it was Hiccup's theme.
    And when they fell bc of the cheat sheet is blown by the wind, it's chaotic and neither one of their theme.
    When Hiccup goes back to Toothless's back and Toothless deploy his wings, it was Toothless theme, Toothless is in control and as if asking Hiccup where are they going.
    And finally when Hiccup threw the cheat sheet, the music is both of their theme combined, as if they are trusting each other and working together to fly around the rocks.
    This movie is awesome!

  • @BaronVonHoovy
    @BaronVonHoovy Год назад +6

    Animation like this is almost always voiced in the original language first, then animated, and then dubbed over in other languages. It's very rare that you'll see otherwise, because it's easier to sync animation to voice lines than vice versa, meaning that this way you get the best performance in the original language with the animation to match it, while with dubs some mismatch between the voice and the animation is expected so there's less pressure to match perfectly.

  • @brianimator

    Vikings invaded different parts of the British Isles, of course because of geography most settlements were located to the east of what today encompasses England and Scotland but they also arrived to Ireland. English as a language have a huge amount of nordic influence (you can look to Jay Foreman's Map Men Episode called 'Why are British place names so hard to pronounce?' for more). The Road to El Dorado is a meme factory, but also just a really good time. DO recommend with disclaimers. It's a little bit ...yeah okay no way around it, there's a bit of a problematic aspect as far as the whole "two white guys (from Spain which... that's another issue) visit a "hidden" civilization and solve problems there" sort of thing, and that's definitely something to bear in mind. But if you work with the premise that the exposition song at the beginning (starts "Our glorious city", ...etc) is LORE and describes accurate history (for the world of the movie), then they become the clueless pawns in the gods' plan who merely nudge things in the direction they need to go, which makes it all make a lot more sense. (See also: Why can they all understand eachother, why does the volcano... Do That, and wtf is up with that armadillo.)
      Also, they are adorable and I love them. A rogue and a bard go on an adventure.

You do understand that the Spanish are Europeans and, as such, have the full range of skin color and hair that any other European country has. The look of people from Latin America comes from most of them being mestizos, a mix of indigenous peoples and Spaniards.
      My grandfather was born and raised in Mexico in the 1880s and 90s (yes 1886 that is not a typo he would have turned 100 the year after i graduated high school but had passed 13 years earlier) and had a lot of status because he was pale with dark blonde hair and blue eyes. In other words he looked like a Spaniard not a mexican.

    30:59 - If the comments haven't been telling you that you *have* to watch the entire trilogy for both Kung Fu Panda and this then they've failed you *SPECTACULARLY.* While the 2nd installment of each is the best, the 3rd ones are still great in their own right.

    most animated movies (especially western ones) are voice acted before detailed character animation
    rough character blocking/movements were probably done while actors were recording (stuff done in storyboards), but most expression & such are done after bc the actors performance heavily informs it

    The magic behind this movie is with 2 names: Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, Director) and Roger Deakins (Fargo, Cinematographer). Between the emotions and cuteness fo the first one and the incredible visuals of the second, there is teh reason why this movie is perfect.
    Also, and you saw it in the end and will see it in the sequels, EVERY DECISION COMES WITH A CONSEQUENCE, SOMETHING HUGE IN A KIDS MOVIE! Definetly recommended to see ALL of them

    Up is my favorite animated movie of all time. This might be the closest second. And it is close. Some of my favorite shots of all animation are in this movie when they are assaulting the dragon nest. The fireball illuminating the cave, the large dragon breaking through the rocks, and then exploding in a fireball as it crashes into the ground. That is one of my favorite shots in ANY movie. I just love it so much.

    To answer Simones question, when it comes to an animated film, the voice work almost always comes first, that way the animators can listen too and are usually given video of the actors performance, then they can get the exact right gesture, timing and inflection correct

    I love this movie. All 3 are just as great. This was the first Dreamworks animated movie that was more than just a goofy comedy with famous voice actor showcases and the first one I really liked. Helps that it's based on a book series though. One of my favourite movies ever. And the soundtrack is spectacular. The piece that plays and builds when Hiccup is navigating Toothless's line maze and goes up to touch him for the first time is a big favourite and on my playlist.
