    Stoic’s funeral and eulogy is one of my favorite pieces of animation. Period. It’s so well put together, and the acting, both from the animators and the voice actors, is just phenomenal. I’ve always said that HTTYD series is the pinnacle of the art of animation.

      Me too. It still chokes me up. My Father is the greatest man I have ever known. He taught me the core pillars of respect, morality and honesty. He is someone that even all my friends look up to and respect. I am glad that he is still in my life. That line of Hiccup's when he says, "I was always afraid of becoming my Dad. Mostly because I thought I never could. How do you become someone that great? That selfless?"
      That is how I have always felt about him. If I manage to become half the man he is, I will consider my life a success.

    I absolutely love this trilogy and I believe it's one of the few times where the sequels are not only improvements to the original, but they feel necessary to the core of what it's trying to tell: a story of life, loss, regret, love, and compassion. I think it's an incredible way to not only make it fun and entertaining by using dragons (and making them cute as hell) as a metaphor for coexistence, but just to show that the actions of just a few people can achieve great things for their community and the world at large. I'm super excited to see you both watch the 3rd one!

  • @AjaofShanghai

    So Drago's Bewilderbeast was captured from a young age and abused and tortured to be the perfect weapon. Dreamworks used references to the horrific training that elephants go through (the bullhook in particular; it's used to hurt the sensitive and vulnerable areas of a creature). This is from the Wiki page: The dark Bewilderbeast's behavior is consistent with that of an abused animal, never acting without its master's command from fear of punishment, and lashing out at anything that approaches as it has learned to associate approach with pain. It is likely that Drago's "dominating" behavior had taught the Bewilderbeast to feel helpless under his command, as even though it is big enough to easily kill him should it turn on him, it nonetheless blindly follows orders and has little, if any, initiative to act on its own.

    • @flowersinapril4952
      @flowersinapril4952 Месяц назад +18

      Poor thing! The animators are insane because you can definitely see the fear in that Bewilderbeast’ eyes :’(((

    • @samuelvincent557
      @samuelvincent557 Месяц назад +11

      And not only that, that Alpha had, probably, never really felt pain, except from Drago. So when Toothless started blasting it and hurting it, it scared it, because it associated pain with punishment from Drago, and that made Toothless superior to him.
      And, I believe, one reason it didn't fight back against all the dragons attacking it was because it, REALLY, didn't want to hurt them. The Alpha, like the Chief's duty is to protect it's own.

    I love how for the first half or so of the movie it sort of leads the viewer down the path of 'Hiccup completely takes after his mother', but Hiccup's eulogy and Valka's little speech during the funeral serves to remind the viewer just how much Hiccup takes after Stoick as well.
    "How do you become someone that great? That brave? That... selfless? I guess... you can only... try."
    "You have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon."
    Hiccup has those same qualities that he admires in his dad. He may not be as big and tough as Stoick, but he's got his father's bravery, his selflessness, his devotion to his people, and he's inherited his values as well.
    Those attributes coupled with Valka's open-mindedness and willingness to challenge the status quo is what makes Hiccup who he is. He's the best of both his parents.

    • @WisteriaDrake
      @WisteriaDrake Месяц назад

      The people who think that Hiccup isn't like his father weren't paying attention in the first movie. Stoick and Hiccup constantly have the same mannerisms, and Gobber keeps snidely remarking that Hiccup is just as stubborn as Stoick. Honestly, the reason that they butted heads so much was BECAUSE they're so alike. They're both stubborn, have strong wills, and will follow what they believe to the end. When they work together, they can't be beaten, but when they disagree, they'll both die on that hill. Valka is the same way, so Hiccup got two doses of stubbornness.

    • @tehdipstick
      @tehdipstick 16 дней назад +1

      @@WisteriaDrake People often only take things at face value, unfortunately, and because this movie starts with Hiccup basically telling Astrid that he's nothing like Stoick, and still searching for who he is, then follows that up with the scene of Valka telling Hiccup "All these years, you took after me!" as well as Stoick commenting to Gobber that "He's just like his mother", those moments are definitely meant to reinforce the idea that Hiccup is more like his mother.
      It's one of the heart-achingly beautiful and tragic parts of Hiccup and Stoick's relationship that Hiccup only comes to understand Stoick's position and viewpoint after his death, realizing that despite their often fundamental differences, he's still his father's son, and his dad raised him to be strong in spirit, brave and devoted to his community, and to share the same values of what it means to be a viking and chief.
      It only dawns on Hiccup exactly how much he admires and looks up to Stoick, and how similar they are, during the funeral. It's a moment of revelation for him, which makes it a moment of revelation for the audience.

    Drago's method of controlling dragons is based on an actual method of breaking in elephants. So... I love this franchise, it might even be my favorite movie franchise ever. However, I am kinda wondering, how does Drago fly Toothless? 🤔 First, he would have to know the controls, I mean, even Hiccup had to use a cheat sheet in the beginning. Second, his foot seems a bit big to fit in the pedal that is made for Hiccup's small prosthetic foot. Oh well 😋

    I did not expect Hiccup's dad to die in this movie, I thought he would get wounded and recover at the end of the movie but he didn't 😭

    the first one is the perfect standalone/introduction movie.
    the second one is the perfect sequel/story since we already know the characters well enough for a deeper plot to work (therefore punching us in the gut with the feels ;-;)
    the third one is the perfect finale.
    i seriously don’t know how they did it, but every single movie in this franchise is top tier in its own way, making it very hard for some people (me) to even build an argument on which one is the best. i say the first one is my personal favorite, but i think nostalgia plays a big part in that (watched all of them in theaters, so i must’ve been 9-10 when i saw the first movie), so that, plus the fact that hiccup and toothless’ first flight scene has the innate power of making me cry 99% of the time - as soon as the score kicks im already :”) are probably the main reasons i consider the first one my favorite. honestly this trilogy is the closest i’ve seen to “perfect” when it comes to a well-rounded, consistent movie franchise/series (not just animation, but overall)
    love your reactions btw!! it always feels really genuine, and it’s fun to watch 🥺

    Fun fact: one of the animators were struggling to animate the elder dragon wakening from the water and have to redo all his work plenty of time. But after he finished his part and looked at final result he was pissed off, that most of the dragon was covered in water and not visible 🫠🫠🫠

    This movie was my first date with my girlfriend after I graduated highschool. Stoic and Valka's reunion had me shifting in my seat feeling everything, then toothless becoming the alpha had me bouncing in my seat. I tried so hard to keep my cool so she wouldn't think I was weird

    Djimon Hounsou has been in some great films - can I recommend:
    Blood Diamond (by the director of Glory, Last Samurai and it may be his best film!)
    Amistad (A Spielberg film IIRC)

    If you havent seen it already, I would really recommend checking out Strange Days from 1995 which will be turning 30 next year and is a forgotten masterpiece from Katherine Bigelow and James Cameron, starring Ralph Fiennes, Angela Basset and Juliet Lewis. Its is an incredible movie, but there just aren't that many reactions out there for it so far.

    I agree it could’ve been clearer, but I think the implication is that when the dark alpha ducked into water to get away from Berk’s dragons attacking it, Drago was still on the alpha so would’ve gotten pulled down into the water with it, so presumably he drowned. As other users have said, the alpha was abused from a young age by Drago so he could control it through fear when it was bigger - I hope that when it realized Drago was gone and couldn’t hurt it anymore that it found peace somewhere far away from any shitty abusive humans
