I love his explanations to chinese movies like kung fu hustle. The funniest joke in the movie is only funny when you understand english and chinese. (The moment when a character says something in english and the other character just asks "can you talk chinese?" Is so funny if you get it.) XD

Kung Fu Panda gets into some deep philosophical ideas for sure. When both warriors looked at the Dragon Scroll. Po said “It’s Blank” and Tai Lung said “It’s nothing” Truly a reflection of both states of mind. When one looks at themselves in the mirror we could see potential or we could see flaws. The stronger person will always find the mirror to be aspirational.

Given the confusion over Tai Lung's name being 'Big Dragon' I wonder if Sifu maybe named him that BECAUSE of the prophecy, expecting him to BE the Dragon Warrior and adding that much more pressure on Tai Lung to begin with.

Speaking as someone who did really well in elementary and high school but burnt out in university, Kung Fu Panda really helped me deal with the recovery process. Tai Lung is a character who really taught me to reflect on my own obsessions and unhealthy fixations.

Definitely watch the other two. The second one was even better than the first, really advancing the characters and connecting them more with the past in perhaps an even more heartfelt manner than the first. It also included even more great fighting set pieces, and Gary Oldman’s villain is surprisingly menacing. The third one felt like a bit of a drop off for me, but it was still fun and enjoyable.
I think Jackie Chan only has around 20 lines in the entire trilogy as Master Monkey. This was Michael Clarke Duncan's last film role prior to his passing. He was the rhino Warden. You'd know him best as John Cofee in The Green Mile. Ian McShane is excellent as Tai Lung, but my favorite villain in the series is in the next movie. "One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it" is a quote from French 18th Century philosopher Jean de la Fontaine.

This is one of my granddaughter's favorite movies--she just turned 8 a couple weeks ago. She loves KP2 and KP3 as well; they're both worth a review IMHO. Others in the comments have recommended the How to Train Your Dragon series--also well worth your time. But, I'd add one more to that list: "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". There will never be another like it.

The first and second movies are SO GOOD! The second has the same qualities as the first but it goes slightly darker. Personally, I think the third one has a problem with humor undermining the emotion way too often (apparently the studio kind of forced it because the second was so dark) but it's not bad. This one balances the two masterfully!
I didn’t realize it till George said the five were the animal forms. When you learn the animal forms you start with the leopard for speed (sifu first student). Crane for defence, snake for precision, tiger for power and finally dragon is the last form because it involves much more mythical kung fu especially qigong. As you progress through the forms and learn to spar, rarely does anyone favour the leopard. So the story kind of represents one’s journey through kung fu training. Even Po’s explanation of why he stayed and took the abuse just so there a chance he might be something more than what he is now. That martial arts gives us a path to better ourselves weather it’s belief in oneself, or not to fear the unknown or even win the acceptance of those around us.
Master Oogway phrases are like Confucious gold nuggets. "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the PRESENT." IF these are not words to live by I don't know what is. Funny side note: Mike Ditka (Legendary American football player and coach) always uses this master Oogway phrase to motivate players and to get them to live in the moment by forgetting past mistakes.
Hey guys and gals, I remember seeing a Mcdonald's commercial where these two kids in the store recreated the dumpling fight scene between PO and Master Shifu. The boys have reached the last chicken McNugget and the epic fight ensues. I love it.
I started watching the opening dream sequence and it took me right back to Samurai Jack, such wondrous artwork and definitely worth a look. You two always give me a smile even when the world doesn't. Whenever people watch this, I always recommend the Jackie Chan movie "Fearless Hyena". It's where they get the battle over the dumpling from, only it's live action. EDIT: As pointed out right after I posted this while watching. XD

Things other people noticed: 22:01 and 23:09 - Callbacks to the training dummy bouncing back when Po hit it. 22:21 - "He's a Panda! What're ya gonna do big guy? *Sit on me?!?"* 19:41 and 22:49 - Both Shifu and Tai Lung react to the scroll being blank the same way, by trying to close and open it again. A subtle mannerism that reference to how Tai Lung was like a son to Shifu.

You caught the chopstick fight as a Jackie Chan. The fight over the bowl of food is from Shaolin vs Lama where it's reversed. The student uses a roast chicken to train with the crotchety old master.
This is honestly one of my favorite movies. The whole series is amazing, to be completely honest, and you very much need to watch the other two. I mean, an animated movie, where Jack Black is an overweight panda working to learn Kung Fu has _no_ place being _this_ amazing, but Po's character journey throughout the trilogy is just... phenomenal.
I have always lived by the saying, "In order to get somewhere new we had to leave something behind." THis is what Shifu must realize with Master Oogway, he had to let Oogway go in order to attain a new master warrior. The Dragon Scroll Warrior using the secret ingredient.
as someone who is built like Po (before his training), i would never have been the Dragon Warrior, after looking at those stairs, i would have quit and set up the cart at the bottom of the stairs and wait for everyone to leave... As animation goes, the "Kung Fu Panda" trilogy might be the single most perfect trilogy of animated films ever made ("Shrek" falls short, only because "Shrek the Third" was hot garbage on a steaming plate). You will not be wasting your time by watching the sequels. In fact, I'd argue that the second film is the best of the bunch (just like "Star Wars")!
Ian McShane is one of those actors that I'll watch anything just for virtue of him being in it. If you guys ever do a Deadwood in a poll, I'll be right on that. He's phenomenal in that.
The Kung Fu Panda Trilogy is, in my opinion, one of only three trilogies (the others being The Lord of the Rings and Back to the Future) that are of consistent high quality across all three entries. Fight me.
Ah man, I need to rewatch this! I saw it at a really trying time and it felt so touching and empowering that I cried for the whole latter half of the movie, more than I've ever cried at any movie. So I've been hesitant to see it again in case it doesn't have that same power. But I'm pretty sure I'll love it again. Thanks for the wholesome reaction!
I always love an underdog hero but I can relate even more to one like the Panda. I get exhausted getting up to my third floor appartement, if I am carrying groceries I even have to take one or two short rests (no, not the D&D kind, a minute will be enough).
This was a great movie for so many reasons. The voice actors are all great actors. The score and background artwork are all amazing, iconic even. The writing is amazing, paying great homage to Chinese Kung Fu movies, and incorporating western humor into it. There was particularly great use of foreshadowing, which is not something that I’ve seen in many Kung Fu movies. You could argue they used too much foreshadowing, but since it’s a kid’s movie, I think it’s just the right amount.
I had the suspicion of the "master master" name because in other movies I heard the word shifu being used as the same of master. This movie is great and your reaction added a lot of good things to it
This movie had no business being this good. It's funny, heartwarming, and really well-written! Does not pander to kids and sends a strong positive message. Please check out How To Train Your Dragon at some point, because it is possibly as visually stunning and as well written as KFP is
Ya gotta love James Hong (Mr. Ping) in this movie. I first saw him as Lo Pan in "Big Trouble in Little China" and have been a fan of his, ever since. I'm so glad he finally got a star on the Hollywood walk of fame!
I like the Furious Five. As you already pointed out, they embody the fighting style in their character. Crane says "You don't belong here." Speaks his opinion but quickly says, " i ..i..mean....in this room...yes, property of Crane." Shows deflection. Passively agressive blocking while attacking. Verses Tigress's aggressively direct attack. " You do not belong here!"
Not sure if it’s a Easter egg but one of the most famous martial arts actor in Hong Kong is named Ti Long. He was Kwan yee in red cliff, and mark’s “brother” in A Better Tomorrow. He always plays someone senior and respected.
Jack Black was really on the top of his game in this movie. It's a shame he kinda felt like he checked out by the third, but there's so many great line deliveries here. 14:19 and 23:05 never fail to crack me up.
I am so happy that you did this film. It's just such a great one. It's an absolutely superb martial arts movie, that just happens to be animated and with animals. Funny, yet also deeply affecting and powerful.

I absolutely love the back and forth between the personalities of Shifu and Oogway. They are the embodiments of Confucianism and Taoism, respectively. They literally argue the main tenants of the two philosophies during the peach tree scene, mirroring a supposedly real event where Confucius got absolutely schooled in a debate with Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism.

Whenever people watch this, I always recommend the Jackie Chan movie "Fearless Hyena". It's where they get the battle over the dumpling from, only it's live action.

Ian McShane is a superb actor, who found fame in the UK tv show Lovejoy, went on to star in Dallas and is now famous for being in the John Wick movies.
What was his role in Dallas? I don't remember that.

The fight over the bowl of food is from Shaolin vs Lama where it's reversed. The student uses a roast chicken to train with the crotchety old master.
This is honestly one of my favorite movies. The whole series is amazing, to be completely honest, and you very much need to watch the other two. I mean, an animated movie, where Jack Black is an overweight panda working to learn Kung Fu has _no_ place being _this_ amazing, but Po's character journey throughout the trilogy is just... phenomenal.
I have always lived by the saying, "In order to get somewhere new we had to leave something behind." THis is what Shifu must realize with Master Oogway, he had to let Oogway go in order to attain a new master warrior. The Dragon Scroll Warrior using the secret ingredient.
This series is one of the best movie trilogies ever done. I can hardly wait for you to watch Kung Fu Panda II.
as someone who is built like Po (before his training), i would never have been the Dragon Warrior, after looking at those stairs, i would have quit and set up the cart at the bottom of the stairs and wait for everyone to leave... Dragon Warrior no, but Noodle selling genius, yes, especially if i set my cart in the middle of the stairs and blocked every way down, except one single file line
As animation goes, the "Kung Fu Panda" trilogy might be the single most perfect trilogy of animated films ever made ("Shrek" falls short, only because "Shrek the Third" was hot garbage on a steaming plate). You will not be wasting your time by watching the sequels. In fact, I'd argue that the second film is the best of the bunch (just like "Star Wars")!
Agreed, Kung Fu Panda 2 is spectacular. Especially Lord Shen.
Shrek is still a pretty good trilogy (1, 2 and 4, 3 isn't real). HTTYD is another contender for top tier trilogies.

The Kung Fu Panda Trilogy is, in my opinion, one of only three trilogies (the others being The Lord of the Rings and Back to the Future) that are of consistent high quality across all three entries. Fight me.

Ah man, I need to rewatch this! I saw it at a really trying time and it felt so touching and empowering that I cried for the whole latter half of the movie, more than I've ever cried at any movie. So I've been hesitant to see it again in case it doesn't have that same power. But I'm pretty sure I'll love it again. Thanks for the wholesome reaction!

I always love an underdog hero but I can relate even more to one like the Panda. I get exhausted getting up to my third floor appartement, if I am carrying groceries I even have to take one or two short rests (no, not the D&D kind, a minute will be enough).
This was a great movie for so many reasons. The voice actors are all great actors. The score and background artwork are all amazing, iconic even. The writing is amazing, paying great homage to Chinese Kung Fu movies, and incorporating western humor into it. There was particularly great use of foreshadowing, which is not something that I’ve seen in many Kung Fu movies. You could argue they used too much foreshadowing, but since it’s a kid’s movie, I think it’s just the right amount.
I had the suspicion of the "master master" name because in other movies I heard the word shifu being used as the same of master.

This movie had no business being this good. It's funny, heartwarming, and really well-written! Does not pander to kids and sends a strong positive message. Please check out How To Train Your Dragon at some point, because it is possibly as visually stunning and as well written as KFP is

I like the Furious Five. As you already pointed out, they embody the fighting style in their character. Crane says "You don't belong here." Speaks his opinion but quickly says, " i ..i..mean....in this room...yes, property of Crane." Shows deflection. Passively agressive blocking while attacking. Verses Tigress's aggressively direct attack. " You do not belong here!"

Not sure if it’s a Easter egg but one of the most famous martial arts actor in Hong Kong is named Ti Long. He was Kwan yee in red cliff, and mark’s “brother” in A Better Tomorrow. He always plays someone senior and respected.

Jack Black was really on the top of his game in this movie. It's a shame he kinda felt like he checked out by the third, but there's so many great line deliveries here. 14:19 and 23:05 never fail to crack me up.

I absolutely love the back and forth between the personalities of Shifu and Oogway. They are the embodiments of Confucianism and Taoism, respectively. They literally argue the main tenants of the two philosophies during the peach tree scene, mirroring a supposedly real event where Confucius got absolutely schooled in a debate with Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism.
Just wait til the secnd one. There's a part that might be the most heartwrenching scene in movie history. I tear up just thinking about it.

The first time I saw Ian McShane(Tai Lung) was in the HBO series Deadwood, later made into a movie(Al Swearengen). He was also in Pirates of the Carribean(Blackbeard), John Wick(Hex Winston). I think he is a Great actor with a very recognizable voice and probably cool as sh*t in person.
You guys are gonna love the second one so much more. It's definitely the strongest one of the trilogy.
