A huge thing I love about death is actually the whistle. When Death is angry, or on the hunt, the whistle has a certain tone. But when Death releases Puss, it has a higher pitch.
Also you can see Death in certain scenes in the background earlier in the movie. AND the death cards when Puss is recalling his past lives with the vet are designed with the wolf.
What’s interesting is that whistle is a common belief in many countries around the world. Never whistle at night or in a funeral because you may never know that death will be knocking at your door.
I'd say Discworld's Death and DC's Death of the Endless are better picks for the title of "best interpretations of Death". Puss in Boots' Death is still absolutely top 5, though.
I love him because he is sinister and frighting but not evil and at the end of the day is just doing his job and I think is exactly how death should be portrayed!
Here's an interesting detail that shows just well written the film is: At some points in the story, both Goldie and Kitty mention "birthday wish rules": that if they reveal what their wishes are before they make them, then their wishes won't come true. Death, Jack, Goldie and Puss all reveal what their desires are before they get to the wishing star: Puss tells Perrito, Jack tells the Crickett, Death tells Puss and Goldie tells the Bears. However, Kitty doesn't reveal what her wish was until she arrives at the wishing star and, fittingly, she's the only character to get exactly what she originally wanted. EDIT: To clear up any confusion, I'm not implying Kitty literally got her wish granted by the wishing star but that, thematically, her 'wish' is the only one that came true with no change in perspective or magic.
@@karlluigi1987 I'm sorry if I didn't explain myself well. Anubis, the Egyptian god of Death, is a bipedal dog/wolf creature. And scythes are common harvesting tools in ancient Egypt. So on a pure visual level, the Big Bad Wolf's design tells you who he is right away. On some level, you know who He is. When it's revealed who he is, the audience never questions it because they were already "told" long before that.

And the thing I loved most is that he's not a bad guy, he's just a force of nature and even when Puss overcomes his fear of him, he reminds Puss that he'll be back. A great message that no one can outlive Death
As a person, Death may have been a little fair-minded, definitely wise and has had self control in order not to eat Puss because he leaned onto a moral code, but he is also cold-hearted, sadistic and a bit arrogant. As for the "valuing life" part, I think that because for mortals it's such a superficial and a philosophical topic that we don't realize that for a supernatural being like Death, valuing life is plain common sense, so we make a big thing out of his character when he's just mostly sadistic because (I believe) of the power he possesses over living people, despite valuing life. That's all from the storyline but in terms of the narrative, yeah, Death was a massive helping tool to bring Puss towards redemption. Without Death, despite him enjoying tormenting Puss, Puss would have just wasted this life as well. All things considered, I still think he is one of the best. He is the embodiment of the "lawful evil" alignment and the "supernatural villain" archetype, which is a villain you cannot defeat, unless he pauses or defeats himself. In this case, Death just changed his mind, he didn't expect Puss to have a change of heart and it ruined his plans on killing him prematurely (which is cheating) and eating him.
Head and shoulders above the first Puss in Boots film. It felt like the end of a trilogy even though it was the sequel. This movie elicited the same sort of surprise that Toy Story 3 and Zootopia did upon release. I don't think people were expecting it to be SO good and emotionally poignant. Another great animated film dealing with identity and death.
So one thing to point out is the reason why puss is so scared of the wolf in the bar is because in the beginning while he was singing he said I have never been touched by a blade and the sickle drew blood meaning that's the first time in his life he's ever been struck by a blade and it caused fear which is why he essentially was running away from the rest of the movie up until he found out he was death...and watch the cat eyes as they talk to each other it will change perspective as well

The representation of Death as the Wolf was one my favorite decisions that film makers have made in any movie. Not just the fact that it's a wolf, but the whistling, the way he acted, the HINTS! Like in the beginning when he said, "Everyone think's they'll be the ones to defeat me." LOVE IT!
This movie is the sole reason why I even started watching movie reaction channels. Shrek 3 isn't terrible, it's just the weakest of the bunch, but still pretty much watchable. You should give it a try, and Shrek 4 as well.
Death is one of the first antagonists in a long time that actually made me feel fear. I just know kids are gonna see him again in their nightmares. And whoever thought of that whistle is a bloody genius.
Amazing art and animation and characters and story. So little unnecessary fluff in this movie. Glad you guys enjoyed it too! Agreed on the wolf being one of the coolest characters ever.
I really am glad they kept the dog as upbeat as he was and there was no crazy twist with him being secretly bad. Same with Little Jack Horner and his role in the movie as a straight villain. With as many characters as they had, they gave a lot of information about each and none were ignored. Honestly brilliant movie and was so surprised when I was hearing good things about it and finally went to watch it. All the Easter eggs from other animated and live-action movies were well done. There was a part at the start that reminded me of some shots in Attack on Titan the way it was directed. I liked all the development of the characters and I definitely think Kitty Softpaws overheard Puss talking about the church and wanting to be there, so she lied and said she wasn't there either being more understanding, because after that she acted differently. Just so much to love about this movie. The magical bag is from Mary Poppins and he kept pulling out magical items from all over other movies. To name a few of the random items from the movie: Poison apple - Snow White, Trident - Little Mermaid, "Eat Me" snack is from Alice in Wonderland that makes Alice grow massive. The grasshopper/cricket was a reference to Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio. He literally says, "let your conscience be your guide." a lot of other ones too.
The art book confirmed that Kitty really didn’t go to the wedding either, which makes her a bit hypocritical. Even when I first saw the film, that kinda baffled me
I believe Kitty didn't came to the church that day. As she said, she knew Puss won't be there because he's too full of himself. Or at least she was afraid of that. And decided to leave him before he can hurt her. Although, at the end she somehow knew he also didn't come and was eager to guilt trip him through the beginning of the movie. But that might be another story.
Love how this movie uses 3 different types of villains: a sympethatic one (Goldie), an irredeemable, unapologetically evil one (Jack Horner) and a menacing, intimidating one (Wolf/Death).
Death is more like the force of nature villain. Like the shark in Jaws or the Cyborg in Terminator. Death being just death. Single minded and unstoppable.
@@ThatSamoanGuy Exactly. Death went out of his way to torment Puss and wanted to break the rules by killing Puss before the cat's time was actually up. That's why there's that exchange in the cave - "That's cheating!" - "Shhh! Don't tell" It's weird how everyone says - "Death is not a villain and he was just doing his job". Yes he is and no he wasn't. He might not be a villain on the average day, but he was clearly a villain to Puss and had it out for him.
This is simply one of my favorite movies ever, animated or otherwise. SO good on SO many levels. Also, Perrito is one of my favorite characters; so fun, so genuine, so wholesome and optimistic. Great reactions, you two!! ❤
Little hidden detail, when puss is taking down the giant and the crowd does the wave together, you can actually spot death to the left watching from the sidelines
I loved this movie. They did an amazing job with the animation but also the story is really heartfelt and wholesome, with a great representation of a panic attack and fear and an awesome display of Death. BTW, the wolf's voice is from a Brazilian actor- Wagner Moura - best known globally as Escobar in Narcos. He nailed this role.
The paradox of the cat lady's house is that as long as Puss stayed here, he was safe from Death. But as soon as he got back to his antics, the wolf came back after him.
The Wolf's voice actor is a Brazilian actor! Wagner Moura and he's awesome. ❤ :) I love watching reactions of this movie to see who gets that he is the reaper right away or not.
Fun fact that i always put on the comments section, there's an very awesome easter egg on wolfs's whistle and is that we already heard that song on another movie and that movie is Shrek 2, at the moment when we see puss for firts time, when he put the cute eyes the background music is the same that wolf whistleing on this movie.
Little Jack horner sat in the corner, extracting cube roots to infinity, a pastime for boys that creates much less noise, and produces a quiet vicinity.
This version of Death and Rattlesnake Jake are by far top 3 animated villians, especially with their fluid presence eating up the screen and giving people chills. On the opposite side Eris from sinbad is a very enjoyable villian 🤣
People might try to tell you that Death isn't a villain, but he is for a short while. Whilst Death is the antagonist to all living things, he is a villain to Puss for a couple of days. He isn't trying to humble Puss, he's trying to kill him, which isn't his job. If Death was trying to humble Puss, he wouldn't be upset when he realised Puss had changed in to a better person/cat.
I think while Kitty had legit doubts (which she listed off to Puss) that she DID she show to the wedding, she was just giving him an out for his guilt. She wouldn't have been so upset with him for not showing up if she didn't show up either. And if she didn't show up, how would she have known that he didn't anyway?
I tend to agree with the prevailing theory that Kitty didn't actually stand Puss up, but only said so to make him feel better after hearing his confession and learning he's changed. Otherwise, her being mad about it or even knowing about it would not have happened. Her issues were of loneliness and trust according to both herself and the map, and though it may have come before Puss showed up in her life, him ditching her at the alter shows how her life became this way. And I'm pretty sure the two Puss movies are meant to take place on opposite sides of the Shrek movies, so she's been alone for a long time at that point. Love the style of fights in this movie, Puss is an Ackerman confirmed. Just the perspective and depth in the giant fight when he's avoiding the bell and then riding it, man it's a treat to the eyes.
If you rewatch the film, there are moments where Death is in the background at some parts. One instance is during the giant fight and the crowd does the wave motion, you can see Death in the back watching Puss. Before the bell falls on him, some have noted seeing very faint but red eyes watching from behind, and the various death cards have 4 corners that look like card diamonds but are actually 4 identical pictures of the wolf with sickles
Death is one of the most metal characters I've ever seen in a movie, let alone an animated film. I remember watching this in the cinema, and that part where Puss is running from Death in the cave (with the background turning blood red as Death appears on the walls) made me go..."Ok, this is actually really fucking disturbing", lol.
Spiderverse started this new normal of animated movies, where instead of presenting a homogeneous world it's now all about presenting exciting visuals by mixing styles. It's really done a lot for the genre.
As a Diablo, I LOVE THAT YOU REFERENCED MALTHAEL. That’s literally death!! But yes this is one of my all time favorite animated movies alongside Megamind, Kung Fu Panda 2, and How To Train Your Dragon.
I really like Death's design. It's very simple, but effective. Black cloak, white skull shaped fur and red piercing eyes. All attributes of death's image. But my favorite are his weapons. Not usual scythe, but sickles. Another tool for reaping a harvest. That also transforms into an Anubis style staf. Very cool and unique idea.
James Steward (1908-1997) is an American actor and military officer who is known for his roles in Its A Wonderful Life, Rope, Vertigo, Rear Window and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
This movie actually does have a retcon that changes something all the way back in the first Shrek movie, where Farquad had the mother bear's fur as a rug in his castle, but it's not that big of a deal considering how well they handle the characters
Knowing Farquad was a douche of a poor taste, someone might've sold him ordinary bear fur with a hat attached at a price of a fairytale bear fur. It's just my head canon now
@@takonaegi2967 maybe, but we saw the bears being sold to him alive, then later in Shrek's swamp, it was only the dad and the baby, and later we see the fur on the floor in his room.
I always interpreted the ending of this as EVERYONE getting exactly what they wanted, and the path to the star was to make them realize what it was they really wanted: Goldie gets her family, the pup gets HIS family, Puss regains ownership of his own life, Kitty gets someone she can trust, Jack Horner gains all the magic in the world (and explodes)--even Death finally gets the respect he wanted/deserved.
There are so many hidden things in this movie. Like sure you have the obvious of the wolf hiding in the crowd, but what about pausing at the Goldi wanted poster? Pause when the 4 faces are on screen for a bit of a spoiler on motivations. Then you have perritos map that has some very dark disturbing things on it hidden behind innocent names. This movie was amazing, hands down my favorite in many years.
I'm very happy with the more whimsical "Spiderverse" direction that animation is headed. Companies have been trying for realism in animation for so long, but as technology advances, these "realistic" animated characters just become part of the uncanny valley sooner or later.
They used this kind of animation for one another movie before "Bad guys" then use it for this movie. So good ! And The Death was amazing, one of the best character.
For the movie Mac N Me the cool thing was they had the lead kid in a wheelchair who was actually disable and it was no big deal. Movies would normally make a big deal out of it, but he was just a normal child and that is what I like as no one treated him like he couldn't do anything.
I remember being put off by the egg too when I first watched the first movie. It was super uncanny and weird, but I was able to push past it. I found the character pretty funny and I was endeared to him by the end. Also of course he isn't here, he SHATTERED into PIECES. He's gone, dude.
Death's portrayal in this movie was simply breath taking. Bc this version of death seems to respect life, rather than just dishing out death. other literation's the reaper we know comes for you and leads you to the other side. We know that meme of death meeting someone and it ends with death saying no you were the best. Or like *spoiler) last action hero death just tapped someone and they later died or he was like he's on my list but you're not you die an old man. some beg not to be taken, some are to young to know what happened, some are to far gone mentally to realize what happening, some are/were suffering, some try to prolong, some sign and accept his hand willingly. But puss squandered and wasted 8/9 lives. It was only when puss cherished/valued his life that death let him go, bc when he looked into his eyes at the end it wasn't a bluff or ego he normally had when they 1st met. They'll meet again, but not yet. Death shouldn't have played with his food and just ended it from the jump.
Not really rare at all. Toy Story 2 & 3, The Incredibles 2 , How to Train Your Dragon 2, Lego Batman, King Fu Panda 2 & 3, Madagascar 2, Cars 3. Really a lot of Pixar sequels and basically every DreamWorks sequel. Then there's universally agreed Across the Spider-verse is one of the greatest films in all of animations. My personal fave is An Extremely Goofy Movie over A Goofy Movie. Honestly I can name more, then there's the ones I haven't seen but a quick Google search can confirm
The voice actor for Lobo Muerte portrayed Pablo Escobar in the Netflix drama series Narcos. Another film starring Antonio Banderas I recommend watching is Desperado
I was part of a focus test for this movie. They asked a million questions about the tv show and if we felt like we needed to watch the show to get this movie
If you take the first letter of each sentence that Goldi opens the book on it says, "You already have it." The ending of the fairy tale is talks about how the protagonist sits on her father's lapå and watches the starts with her family. The issue with having no fear of death is that you have no respect for life either, as shown by Puss wasting his lives in utterly idiotic ways. You need to acknowledge that death is a real thing that serves as an end to life to enjoy the period you are alive. That was the lesson that Puss learned. At the end of the movie, he fears death and accepts the finality it will bring and that's what allows him to enjoy the life he has and treat it with respect. At that point, Death has no reason to harvest him anymore so, he leaves. Death is also neither good nor evil, death just is. The star would have been incapable of wishing Death away as Death is unaffected by its powers, as shown by Death casually walking through the barrier, twice. Puss only had a chance against Death since Death had reduced his power to the level of Puss' to enjoy the game more.
“Just make wish for death go away.” That’s just the thing it WON’T go away no matter you do it’ll be after until you just accept it. It is after DEATH literally
Shrek's fourth installment is definitely worth reacting to, after the dip in quality of the third it bounced back, however it is still a very polirizing moving among critics but I think is because of how different it is from the rest of the series. I consider the second one and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish the best of the whole series. I think a Cinecringe reaction to third one is a good idea.
Just started it but the “OMG” counter hitting 8 the second the Dr. said “That makes 8 Puss” was just perfectly timed.
No notes just perfect.👍

George: "Is he straight up actually death?"
Death: "Straight. Up."

The grasshopper/cricket was a reference to Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio. He literally says, "let your conscience be your guide." a lot of other ones too.
The art book confirmed that Kitty really didn’t go to the wedding either, which makes her a bit hypocritical. Even when I first saw the film, that kinda baffled me
Ahhh okay... I was just trying to think of it deeper I guess. I still like my idea... she lied to spare his feelings haha@@jeffreyquinde6707
I looked at Death as just doing a job, but he ENJOYED his job.
Death is more like the force of nature villain. Like the shark in Jaws or the Cyborg in Terminator. Death being just death. Single minded and unstoppable.
@@captin3149 he wasn't doing his job though.
@@captin3149 He clearly overstepped his boundaries by actively hunting PiB. He said so himself.
@@ThatSamoanGuy Exactly. Death went out of his way to torment Puss and wanted to break the rules by killing Puss before the cat's time was actually up. That's why there's that exchange in the cave - "That's cheating!" - "Shhh! Don't tell"
It's weird how everyone says - "Death is not a villain and he was just doing his job".
Yes he is and no he wasn't. He might not be a villain on the average day, but he was clearly a villain to Puss and had it out for him.
The wolf (death) is played by Brazilian actor Wagner Moura.. he star Tropa de elite (elite squad) is a very good brazilian film
This is simply one of my favorite movies ever, animated or otherwise. SO good on SO many levels. Also, Perrito is one of my favorite characters; so fun, so genuine, so wholesome and optimistic. Great reactions, you two!! ❤
I just love being from Spain so I could underestand Antonio Banderas' references in spanish, what a good character he made with his performance.
20:00 Fun fact: in the original novel he was just called "The talking cricket" and he gets killed by Pinocchio pretty much immediately.
I'm pretty sure he is "Anubis" which is technically also a "fairy tale". Canine god of death. You pay him with coins in your eyes when you die.
Oh wow. I hadn't even considered the fact that he might be Anubis _beyond_ being _just_ plain old personified Death. Very cool.
I don't think I've laughed harder than when Perrito went full-on Joe Pesci on Goldie and the bears' asses XD
Goldie and her family were in complete shock when Perrito was cursing like a sailor was the cherry on top XD
The paradox of the cat lady's house is that as long as Puss stayed here, he was safe from Death. But as soon as he got back to his antics, the wolf came back after him.
"I love that damn egg, how dare you!"
12:29 "Is he straight up just actually Death?" Lol. Exact words.
17:43
Ah yes, the 2 extremes of the Wolf's fandom...
Jiminy Cricket, with a Jimmy Stewart-esque voice, is next level wonder!!!
They NEED to watch It's A Wonderful Life this December.
Watching how quickly you got to the Puss sequel while I side eye my copy of "Kick Ass 2" and sigh ("Some day, they'll get there. Some day")
This and Paddington 2 are two of the greatest movies of this century.
“This is so weird after reading the Pratchett Death books” unexpected Discworld mention! You love to see it
I wonder if they watched any movie of the Discworld? May be they would make a reaction to the Colour of Magic
1:15 I don't know what that little dog is doing
His best. He's doing his best :)
8 OMG's at 8 lives hahaha good timing 5:15
Death is one of the most metal characters I've ever seen in a movie, let alone an animated film. I remember watching this in the cinema, and that part where Puss is running from Death in the cave (with the background turning blood red as Death appears on the walls) made me go..."Ok, this is actually really fucking disturbing", lol.
Spiderverse started this new normal of animated movies, where instead of presenting a homogeneous world it's now all about presenting exciting visuals by mixing styles. It's really done a lot for the genre.
Shrek 3 isn't terrible. It just didn't elevate the franchise compared to the masterpiece that Shrek 2 was. It is a bit weaker but no terrible.
Finally!! someone noticed references to malthael 😈👀☠️
My son and myself just loved and I mean loved this movie. At the time he was 17 years ago, so that is saying something.
This was the movie of the year without a doubt. 😄 It’s crazy how much they upped their game from the first Puss In Boots.
3:26 Very impressive pun made by George there, with Leshy/Leche - I'm assuming he's played his fair share of Inscryption
This movie was amazing, hands down my favorite in many years.
oh, Kitty definitely showed up at the church, why else would she be upset at him if not?
she just lied after finding out that Puss was regretful
My favorite part of the wolf is when he is yelling in Spanish after puss stands up to him, "why do I always play with my food!?!?" 🤣
This movie is just so damn good! Its perfect in every way! And Death... my god! No villain can top that!
I'm very happy with the more whimsical "Spiderverse" direction that animation is headed. Companies have been trying for realism in animation for so long, but as technology advances, these "realistic" animated characters just become part of the uncanny valley sooner or later.
George's such a blizzard buff and he sees no Malthael connection? My eyes almost popped
They used this kind of animation for one another movie before "Bad guys" then use it for this movie. So good ! And The Death was amazing, one of the best character.
This film owes a lot to the Good, the bad and the ugly. Which is a pretty fantastic inspiration.
For the movie Mac N Me the cool thing was they had the lead kid in a wheelchair who was actually disable and it was no big deal. Movies would normally make a big deal out of it, but he was just a normal child and that is what I like as no one treated him like he couldn't do anything.
During the death montage, you can see the Grim Reaper in the corner of every number.
I remember being put off by the egg too when I first watched the first movie.
It was super uncanny and weird, but I was able to push past it. I found the character pretty funny and I was endeared to him by the end.
Also of course he isn't here, he SHATTERED into PIECES. He's gone, dude.
“My compliments to your cobbler. (Nasal breath laugh)”
-El lobo
“(Whistles)”
Paul Rudd used to prank tv talk show hosts with Mac & Me clips for years.
She always says OMG an average of 25 times per movie 😂
19:09 the Book first letters spell: "you already got it"
This movie clearly happens just before whichever shrek movie where Puss meets Shrek. At the end you see Puss's boat arriving in Far Far Away.
The lobo's voice is so scarousing.
One of the best animated movies I've ever seen. It's realy, really rare for sequels to be better than the first movie but Last Wish is a masterpiece.
The cricket with the Jimmy Stewart is hilarious
I was part of a focus test for this movie. They asked a million questions about the tv show and if we felt like we needed to watch the show to get this movie
Best Dreamworks movie since Shrek 2 hands down no doubt. May even be better 🤔
It's funny that Puss' cape clasp is the face of Death.
Puss only had a chance against Death since Death had reduced his power to the level of Puss' to enjoy the game more.
death in this movie is such a good character, maybe the best representation of death i seen in a story
The only time death chases after you is when you fear it
Baby bear: "She is not my sister"
*smack*
Papa bear: "she is"
Death was so fucking cool
“Just make wish for death go away.”
That’s just the thing it WON’T go away no matter you do it’ll be after until you just accept it. It is after DEATH literally
its such a good movie. As for shrek, i'd say give 3 a go and if you can make it through you can pallete cleanse with 4th
To me the Wolf is the best animated villain I've seen in a while.
He can be comparable to 90s Disney villains.
This was by far one of the best movies from this year, so frickin good!
Also, doing Simone dirty with the OMG counter lol
12:22 LOL the whistle is the same pitch as the bleep in that moment
12:28 LMAO
Can we talk about the glow up of the century tho? We went from creepy egg to one of the best representations of the grim reaper in media if not ever
love the OMG counter LOL
The best villains in modern cinema…death from the last wish…and minus one godzilla
It's Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio but he's doing a Jimmy Stewart impression.
