    Great job explaining one of the greatest features of SD3.
    I only got the software for a week now and I'm absolutely amazed by all the in-depth possibilities SD3 covers. This is e-drummer's Heaven!

    Very cool video Mike! Thanks for the update man!! The multiple zone mapping and leveling is really a cool, this would certainly allow for a more realistic sound and feel! That's awesome! Looks like this software has really settled in and is becoming a benchmark in the industry. Thanks for all you do Mike!

      Quick question Mike, I have noticed that the resonate snare side is normally mixed in on the snare triggering. Do you also have control over the resonate snare side mixing? Or is this automatically pre-mixed with the snare sound that you pick? Thanks Mike!

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад +1

      Hey guys, thanks for stopping by. You have full control over the snare bottom mic as well: Level (volume) and even how much bleed you want to have coming through that mic (bass drum, toms or even the whole set). As the guys from Toontrack recorded every single mic, you can mix every track just you would on an acoustic drum set - because, well, it IS an acoustic drum set ;)

    I didn't realize how in-depth they went with e-drum feature support. This is incredible!! I finished the download over the weekend and I have it installed. I'm ITCHING to get into it today after work. Your videos and Luke's have been great so far. Hoping to add some playing demos of my own very soon.

      I can't wait to see and hear you using those stunning sounds, Chris. And I'm really curious to see which snare you gonna pick. I can tell you, it's a hard decision every time. But finally, I think I've picked my core set to start with: The Yamaha Beech kick and toms and the almighty Black Beauty. ;)

    The low velocity sounds are awesome in this sound so much more realistic then previous drum software packages and the Snare CC thing is really cool to add realness. Thanks for the video, this is definately software I will look at getting (I love the adpacks with SD2) to do everything from programming drums to adding to recorded drums to adding to electronic sounds.

    Thanks Mike for this video, I did not have the time to try these things out by my self. I wasn't satisfied about the triggering result I got with SD3 until now. I knew that there was a lot of adjusting to do. I did already some adjustments on my VH12 Hihat, I saved it as a preset. But when I load this preset I have to adjust the Hihat again. For me the Hihat preset close more works fine! I do have to read and experiment a lot I think. I do certainly use this video to help me trough the issues I am struggling with. Thanks Mike very helpful again! 👍🍺🍺

      Hi Rob, thanks for watching my video. As always and though I appreciate when people watch my videos, I highly recommend that you take some time to read the Manual, which is available within the software. Everything's explained very detailed by Toontrack. However, you know that you can always contact me if you have further questions or issues that need to be solved.
      As for the HiHats: This seems to be a common issue for people, it was already on Superior Drummer 2. I've once made a video about it, you may watch this again. Even Toontrack writes in their Manual that's it is very important to set up the whole chain correctly, starting from the correct pedal pressure, the settings within the module, the buffer size ... you name it. The software itself is just the last chain of the whole process.

    • @biekanez1

      I just started using SD3 today and do I have a lot to learn. I've only downloaded the first 2 downloads. The 5th (the very last one - don't think I'm going to use downloads 3 & 4) is going to take another13 hours.
      I'll be going through your tutorial videos so thank you very much for taking the time to produce them.
      I have a question about the 3 zoned snare, does the Rimshot still sound, that would make 4 zones, but did not see you triggering that rim. I want to know that when configuring 3 zones as you did, is the Rimshot given up?
      Thanks.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  6 лет назад

      Hi David, sorry for the delay. The cheapest kit overall? Well, you should look for a drum module that supports a "positional sensing", the best price-value-ratio is probably an used Roland TD-12. Then you need a dual-zone pad ... either you buy one of Roland's pads or build your own.

    Hi Mike, just a really quick question: there are snare zone settings in the "mapping" tab, but also in the dedicated "snare zones" tab. But these are not in sync.
    The ride pos sens tip was a good one. I got the eDRUMin10 and I just tried it with my 75$ LEMON cymbal. I was quite suprised. It's working. Presumably, not like a 600$ Roland digital ride but, yeahheee - I got 2 articulations on the bow now!!!

  • @dmacrt
    @dmacrt 4 года назад

    Mike, why not instead of going to the "Mapping" tab, you go to the Hi-Hat and Snare CC tab (maybe they are split now in the newer dot releases of SD3), click "Select the Snare Zone Control CC(s)" and set the zones like you do with the hi-hat. I do this currently for a TD-12 and also for MegaDrum with optional position sensing.

    Mike - thanks for all of your hard work - figuring this stuff out and presenting it to the rest of the world (drum geeks!) in a simple and easy to understand format is not small task!!! Can you tell us how you connect your module to SD3 - is it an interface? If so, which one and why do you use it? What do you suggest? Thanks in advance. Best, Al

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад

      Hi Al, thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate it. Talking of interfaces - I use a Roland Quad-Capture interface and I am happy with it. However, there are several decent interfaces out there. Fortunately, nowadays you have access to a wide variety of great interfaces without busting the bank. ;)

    Hi Mike
    Many thanks for your continuing video efforts with SD3, I found your Hi-Hat set up video really helpful and I'm happy to report that my TD50 works even a little smoother than my TD30 in the hi-hat department.
    However I'm having a few problems with the multi zone snares and ride. I see it's working perfectly for you on your most excellent video and I've watched it a few times to make sure I've not missed anything, but I can't make it work for me. (Actually you didn't show how you actually set it up as you had done that earlier). I'm able to set up at most 2 zones on the snare for example, edge and snare centre but the dynamics are wrong and it changes from edge to centre at random anywhere positionally. When I try to set up a third zone it just robs one of the other zones. If I try to sort that out SD3 quits "unexpectedly" Perhaps I'm not understanding how to set it up properly with the "learn" function and there's also a 2nd "learn" function for CC info. Should I be using both ? Toontrack suggested I check that TD50 has multi positioning facility turned on and it is. I also understand that the TD50 Digital snare and ride has more positional info than the analogue pads. I have suggested to Toontrack that that there maybe a problem, and also they might consider adding to their really excellent list of tutorial videos with an eDrum specific set up guide on multi zone and mapping to help, of which I'm sure many of us eDrummers are in need of.
    Thanks again for your great efforts and if you do a video before them please let me/us know.
    Kind regards
    Bob

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад

      Hi Bob, first of all: thanks for your kind words that I really appreciate.
      I think your digital snare is the "problem" and for me it's a really interesting insight as I thought about how the new digital pads from Roland will work with this feature.
      Well, of course this new digital triggering not a problem and I don't know exactly how Toontrack developed these multi-zone feature, but I'm convinced they had common trigger technology in mind. For most electronic drum pads, the piezo is in the centre and, depending on the quality, it recognizes where on the snare pad you hit, because the module calculates the amount of vibration happening - which is, of course, right in the middle more than on the side. With the new digital Roland snare, however, it's a different technology as this snare has multiple places to detect your hits. This will cause better trigger results, but it may not correspond correctly with the multi-zone technology Toontrack developed and which I showcased in this video.
      Anyway, I am in contact with the Toontrack guys here and then, I will try to discuss this issue and will do further research.
      Best,
      Mike

    • @bobjenkins4110
      @bobjenkins4110 7 лет назад

      Hi Mike
      Thanks so much for your detailed reply, good thinking on your part, you are probably right about the digital pad situation. I'll contact Toontrack and ask if this is in fact what's happening, alongside your own enquiry.
      I have just tried using a PD128 pad to see if I can make that work zonally and I have failed to get that to work as well, at first I could get "edge" and "mid centre" but edge only triggered at the softest hit and only at the extreme edge of the pad (despite moving the zone adjuster slider to all possible settings) then as soon as I tried to add a third zone I could only get one articulation to trigger and I could not undo this no matter what.
      Just for your knowledge purposes I had a TD30KV and bought the TD50 upgrade pack (14" Snare,18" Ride and TD50 Module) and sold my TD30 module and snare pad. So all my pads apart from new snare and ride are TD30. I'm now starting to regret doing this upgrade as I'm having so many problems. I personally would not recommend the TD50 to anybody for a number of reasons apart from these particular problems as overall it is not as attractive as TD30 regarding sounds and sensitivity. Hope this is useful and helpful to you.
      I also should mention that after consulting with you and doing some research I actually purchased a
      WD 512 GB SSD External drive for £170 and have installed SD3 and my other Libraries on it and it's all working fine.
      f there are any more details that I could help you with regarding any of this stuff then please don't hesitate to ask as it would be a pleasure to assist.
      Best regards
      Bob

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад

      guesswho5150 Sure. Keep in mind that half of the way to a smooth HiHat triggering is done outside the software. The correct settings within your module, for example - or even the correct pressure on the HiHat stand. If your module does not send correct HiHat notes to the software, SD will never be able to trigger smoothly.

    Hey Mike!!! You have great channel!!! Please help me with one problem. How to separate Rimshot and Sidestick or cross stick? we have roland TD 50 with SD 3. the 3 snare zones are working. we selected Roland TD 50 in the e drum inside SD3 but side stick not work when we play on the pad. the pad is the new digital snarePD140DS. I would like to hear the sound of the cross stick or side stick when I rest my hand on the drum head and play cross stick. But It works inside Roland.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  5 лет назад

      I am not sure about the digital snare, to be honest. What you can do: Select the particular articulation in SD3 and allocate this to your snare using the "Learn"-function. When you have both articulations in your module, it's likely to be separate MIDI data that can be translated inside Superior Drummer 3.

  • @biekanez1
    @biekanez1 6 лет назад

    I still have the idea that when I chose another preset I have to adjust always the snare to cc multiple zones. Because when I don't do that the pad where you can adjust the 3 zones is always empty. I would be nice if it was possible to adjust your own E-kit perfectly save it as a main preset. After that when you wanted to load a SD3 preset it would be loading within your main E-kit preset without changing that settings. Because you can't see what is happening with your E-kit settings and the settings of your snare are gone I always have to redo the snare settings. The hi hat settings don't chance. You can see that! Maybe I'm wrong and maybe you know that Mike. 🍺👍😎

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  6 лет назад

      Hi Rob, I don’t know for sure, but I think this is normal, because when choosing another preset, you‘ll have another snare, therefore different sounds. So you have to re-adjust the multiple zones again. But I have no access to my computer and SD3 currently, so I can’t check. I‘ll keep you updated once I‘m at my computer again.

    Hi Mike, thanks for this great video! Very nicely done. I was wondering if you might do one dealing with the Hi Hat. I never got a natural, or even close to a natural response from the Hi Hat either with my former TD10 or now current TD50 with SD2. Maybe this struggle has been addressed in SD3. I will upgrade to SD3 shortly but just want to get ahead of the game a little in case there is a similar issue. I tried all the tweaks that were supposed to help with this, (selected Roland preset, adjusted pedal correction settings, edited the velocity curve, even edited individual articulations). If you could do a similar video to this one I just watched but for HH that would be great. It would be great to see what settings you have all around in SD3 to get a natural response. Thanks in advance!

    What happens when you drag a loop into a track with the edrum preset selected? Will the loop play?

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  4 года назад

      Yes, of course. Depends on the preset then whether all pieces will be played. When your loop contains four toms, but the preset in SD3 just has two toms, it will replace them accordingly. Same goes for cymbals.

    Hi Mike, I’ve just got a VH 14 HiHat and have set the 3 zone settings in midi mapping set up , tip, edge & bell but I don’t seem to have the articulations to support it triggering 3 zones. I’ve just downloaded SD3 so presume I have the latest version but I’m stumped on this problem of not having enough articulations and can’t find any support regarding. Was hoping with your wealth of knowledge that you might know whether it’s something I need to aquire separately. Thanks in advance, love your work ❤

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  Год назад +1

      Hi John, thanks for reaching out. Well, this video you are commenting on is five years old. When I made this one, there was no VH14 on the market. Not all libraries from Toontrack support all articulations. Back then it was the opposite: some libraries have had articulations which the hardware (Roland, Alesis, Yamaha) couldn‘t reproduce or support due to lack of trigger zones. It‘s always hard to tell from a distance, so please treat this as a rough call: hit all zones on your hats (tip, edge and bell) and see if SD3 indicates them properly in the software. If yes, you can assign articulations to those zones in case the software does not support them by just loading the respective preset (in this case: Roland). It‘s a feature called „MIDI learn“, which also allows you to, for example, have a cowbell sound coming from the rim of a floor tom.
      When you download SD3, make sure you have the latest version of Toontrack‘s „Product Manager“ installed, too. Launch it and see if your version of SD3 is the latest. Then pick your respective module (I assume it‘s the TD50 or the TD27, right? As they support the digital pads like the VH14).

      I think thats due to the fact that not all of the kits support Positional sensing in EZ2. Ive tested EZ2 and could only find one or two kits in the SDX packs that support positional sensing that worked for Roland. Where any Superior Drummer kit supports the positional sensing that makes the Roland TD-30 a cut above.

    Hi Mike! I'm a bit ignorant to positional sensing... does the TD-9 support it? Rogue from the Toontrack forum said the 8, 9 AND 10 all support it. But I see conflicting information everywhere. Would I need a specific Roland PD-120/125 etc pad to implement it? I just read the TD-9 does support it. But I'm using a DIY snare with a Roland dual-trigger... thanks for any help, my friend!

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  4 года назад

      Hey Chris! No, the TD-9 does not support positional sensing. I know because I used to have one on my own. 😉 To be able to use that feature you’d just need a stereo pad / dual trigger, which means a pad with two piezos, one for the center and one for the rim/edge.

      Well, in the end it’s a matter of budget, of course. I often recommend a TD20 in mind condition (or even the TD20X, which is even better). It has enough inputs (up to 15), so you can easily expand your kit with more pads if needed. It offers positional sensing and responses very well. Some older ones sometimes have issues with the LCD screen, but not the newer ones. But again, it’s a matter of budget, the size of your kit and your needs.

      I’ve always achieved good positional sensing with my own converted snare and the fabulous trigger system from R-Drums (made in Germany). However, a digital snare will always be better or even more accurate which is simply a question of the superior technology with a digital sensor. Of course you need to be a very good and accurate playing drummer to feel and to use the difference.

      Mike Luke thank you. On the weekend I visited a friend who owns a TD50 to try out the generations pack but also try the positional sensing using the module and also using SD3. I was shocked once again to find that the variation in sound from centre to rim is much more pronounced in SD3 than using TD50 module snare sounds. On a similar topic I have a TD17 which does not have positional sensing but even the TD17 seems to produce many more articulations and sound variation in SD3 than in the module (possibly due to being able to select humanisation options in SD3 which I have done). Perhaps you can comment on this phenomenon and maybe it’s worth a video?

    I like to put completely different cymbals on the edges of my cymbal pads than on the centre - can you show how to do this in Superior Drummer 3 (since you're also a Roland user)? In Superior Drummer 2.0, it worked via the MIDI learn function; now however, this changes the entire cymbal pad to the same note, rather than to e.g. Crash in the centre, China at the edge. 😕 I got it to work by accident on the ride, but I haven't figured out how to map these MIDI notes reliably yet.

    • @MikeLuke

      Right click on the cymbal you want to change ... go to "more" ... then "Stack" ... "Add to" ... chose the articulation you want to change ...pick the cymbal you like to have on that articulation, click on "Stack on Crash", done.

      Mike Luke Thanks, I did it a little differently in the meantime, via the MIDI / E-drum settings - selecting the different types of instruments (in this case "cymbals --> all", and then just assigned all the crashes, splashes and chinas manually to different MIDI notes, making sure there was no overlap. Then I merely had to change the MIDI notes inside the Roland drum module on my User Kit to match these numbers.
      However, stacking seems to offer a lot of versatility for layering drums, so I am certainly going to use that soon! 😉

    Can you please tell me what is the number cc16 means ? Thanks

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  6 лет назад

      CC stands for „continuous controller“, which means that in a single MIDI note several information are transported, such as velocity, or, in the case of the hihat, the level of opening. The number 16 is just for general purpose, often assigned with the snare. CC04, for example, is the foot controller which determines or controls the hihat.

    hi, thx for sharing. I have a question although its not related to snare and rides. Its the hihat. I used the 'Roland" drum preset and the 'More close" hihat preset. However, when im playing a closed hihat in the edrum, it triggers the open hihat sound... Can you help me plz?

    Can the positional sensing work with lower end module that support PS like a td-10 or td-8?

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  5 лет назад

      Hi! The TD-10 supports positional sensing, the TD-8 does not. PS is available on the TD10, 12, 20, 25, 30 & 50.

    I cant get SD3 to recognize the Positional Sensing on my TD25...
    did the Mapping like you... and also i installed the latest driver and stuff.. any ideas?
    thx

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  6 лет назад +1

      Hi York, did you check if Positional Sensing works within your module? SD3 can only use the information that's coming out of the module. So you may check the settings within the TD25 first. And of course you need a dual-zone pad (but I assume you have one when playing the TD-25).

    • @yorkvonsydow3428
      @yorkvonsydow3428 6 лет назад

      Mike Luke yes PS works fine in the module itself...
      Thanks for the reply though!
      I double checked the ps settings in the module as well...

      Well, then I have no idea, to be honest. I'd suggest to seek where the issue is based. In the main window of superior drummer there's this little box an the top where all the articulations per instrument are listed. Click on the snare, open the articulation box and then play your snare at different zones ... actually the different articulations ("center", "mid center", "edge" ..) should be highlighted then. If just the "center" articulation is triggered, you may then check the MIDI/E-Drum settings like I showed in my video.

    how do you do rim-shots on e-drum?

    • @jackgoff4859
      @jackgoff4859 4 года назад

      Same as a real drum. The rims are another trigger and when the snare and rim are hit together it plays rimshots.

    Hey Mike Thank you for this really helpful video. The external hdd MUST be a ssd? Or is a normal ext hdd 3.0 good enough?

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Ralf, well, a SSD is always a better choice. However, you don't need it. The speed of the external drive just determines how fast the samples are loaded into RAM. Once they are loaded into your RAM, all samples are available in real time. But the external hard disk does not influence how smooth the software works. So you probably need more RAM (8GB at minimum, I have 16GB). I have Superior Drummer 3 on an external HDD, connected via Thunderbolt to my iMac, which is fast enough for me. As I own a lot of expansion packs, too, I would have needed a 1TB SSD, which is too expensive for me.

      Mike Luke Thanks you. I have 16 gm Ram. And I don" t Switch the kits. I only need one main rock kit for a gig.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  7 лет назад

      Perfect, 16GB of Ram is enough as long as you don't use ALL internal room mics. But for a gig you usually you just need the direct mics, Overheads and maybe the room. ;) Have fun!
