God bless you ! I never find any instructional tutorial for the e-drummer about SD3, there is just content for mixing, etc. Thank you so much Mike for releasing such content. Your video is very clear, perfect guide.
its great that you can tailor your drums to your own playing style.A bit of a learning curve to actually know how to .But this video is an oasis in the desert for those of us STILL struggling with hi`Hat triggering. thankyou .
I have a TD 30 with a VH13 HH. I've been struggling last few months getting the HH calibrated. I actually was thinking I was having a hardware problem. This worked like a charm~ Thank you...!!
Coming back to these videos to remind myself how to do this stuff since i'm helping someone configure their trigger settings with superior drummer and a Roland TD-50 - You're the man Mike! Your videos have always been the best for this!
Jeez what a great video! Thanks so much. I have been struggling with the combination of TD30 and Superior Drummer for about 4 years! You have solved my problem completely.
Until now I have been recording my hi-hats live as WAV files direct from the TD-30 because I couldn't figure out how to get SD3 to interperet what I was doing. Will be experimenting with this tomorrow, all seems to make sense at last. Hugely helpful video, many many thanks!
Dude! Thank you! Oh my god this is my number one hurdle that I can never get right for the vdrum in my studio. And it's the 1 big problem I have with toontrack that I feel they never made a formal in depth tutorial for. Much appreciated man.
Thank you Mike, from your new pal in New Zealand! My expensive hi hats were ok before. Now I love them. I see you did one for the snare drum too! I hope you get an internet award or something, thanks again.
Wow THANKS, it helped me out a lot with my Hi-Hat setup in SD3, even though my values were different than yours. Nevertheless it helped me understand some setups in tuning. I'll tell ya'... it's been a long winded challenge/journey with a lot of "manual reading" and experimenting to get this stuff right to perfection. With the help of video examples from YOU, Justin, Siren, V-drums and the rest; it has help immensely with the understanding that isn't always picked-up from reading Manuals alone. Thanks a lot - appreciate it a lot!
Mike, thanks again for a fantastic video! I have the TD-50 and finally took your advice and purchased SD3, and it is amazing! I have a vh-11 and was not satisfied completely with the response. Your video really cleared a few things up, so I am looking forward to putting this information to good use. I just want to say thanks again for spending your valuable time making this video for the community. Best regards, Jeffrey
Ive just sarted with a Roland TD-9 and at the stage where using the brain as a sound source, ita all fine ...till i listen to the BFD ...BFD 3 has no mapping preset for TD-9 and the results are far from good . H E L P !! I have to now create a map for the bfd somehow ... wish i could find someone as good as this guy dealing with the BFD 3 . any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
@@peteharman1061 To be honest, it's going to be a not so pleasant experience. You have map EVERYTHING by hand from scratch with midi learn etc.. Setting the gates etc.
@@annekedebruyn7797 thanks for such a quick reply .My brother and i have been making music for many years using conventional instruments . we are players first and technicians a very poor second .. we need to find someone who can help and are willing to pay a fair price for advice that will quicken the point where we are actually playing stuff ..Or would it be easier to change to a different Roland controller ??
@@peteharman1061 Anything midi related (edrums, pianos etc.) will work. You just have to learn the midi editor. I wouldnt waste money on something. Learning it isnt that hard. The process is just tedious.
Great video and cool that you show it with a TD-30, since most people do use this one. However the hi-hat scale is present in many Roland Modules. So the principle is universal. I also like the zoom in and out. Very well made and a great knowledge source.
Thank you, thank you. This is such a helpful video for someone fairly new to electronic kits. I really appreciate the detail and thorough explanations. I think the pacing is good too, I don't feel like I need to watch it again - although I probably will. I've been playing the Yamaha RH-130 high-hat which, considering most of the other e-high-hats I've played, isn't really that terrible, but I ... OK, it's pretty terrible. Ha Ha! Actually, I was able to get it dialed in pretty well, but it's not in the same league as the Roland high-hats. I'm about to spend more money than I should on a TD-50KV and SD3, and I've been watching tutorials and review videos to reassure myself it is going to be a good thing. Your video definitely helped me to feel more confident that I'm going to be happy I make the move. Thanks again.
Great mike. This is the reason I’ll have to buy the 30 or 50. I’m convinced that I’ll have to own Roland hihats and if owning the 50 then having the 18” digital ride. I could use Jobeky or Field for crash cymbals....because they look better with a Jobeky kit
Hi Greg, that's what I did back then, too. There's still no better option on the market than going with Roland, because they provide the best and most accurate feel for a drummer.
Really helpful! Thank you for diving in thoroughly into all the details. I just got my TD-50 setup and I'm struggling with more subtle triggering of my VH-13. Although I don't have Superior Drummer yet, I'm going to try your settings right away.
Thank you Mike, this tutorial will save me some time in configuring the hi-hat within SD3. Please note that turning off Local Control will turn off the sounds within the module. Sometimes when I practice, I don't want to fire up the computer to trigger samples and prefer using Roland's sounds - as bad as they are.
Yea, I knew that you knew that. But thank you for that tip for when I'm triggering sounds to turn that off. I'll just have to remember to turn it back on whenever I'm practicing.
Hey Mike, great tutorial here! Are you sure that it's necessary to turn off local control? I can't tell a bit of difference in latency if my buffer is at 64 samples in my DAW.
I wish it was as easy as this! I have just bought SD3 and it's anything but plug & play! I play the 2Box Drum-It 3 through the Focusrite 18i20 and the sound is magical, with zero latency. Enter SD3 and I now have awful latency of 0.25 SECONDS. It's like listening to a double trigger, but only hearing the 2nd sound! Add to that, my 2Box Drum-It 3 Hi-Hat worked opposite way round in SD3. So this programmed mapping to know manufacturers MIDI map is clearly not working. So as you see, SD3 is just not cutting the mustard when used with 2Box Drum-It 3 and Focusrite 18i20. And you would think two companies from sweden would at least be talking to each other in getting their MIDI mapping right! I'm back to playing without the SD3 altogether now.
Thank you so much for creating this! It’s shocking that both Roland and toontrack haven’t been bothered to make this work better out of the box seeing as both brands are the industry standards that many will use together. I’ve had several Roland kits over the years and the Hihat triggering is terrible without all of these tweaks. It’s also annoying that it takes this much fiddling around just to have a decent feel! The Roland TD30 cost $14,000 in Australia when it came out, imagine spending that much money to have a clunky system out of the box. Anyway I’ve ranted enough, thanks again for this video!
Great tutorial. Thanks for posting. I have finally got my VH-11 triggering smoothly in SD3. One thing I found is that once I'd got all the articulations of openness set where i like them, the only thing still not right was the pedal chick sound was too quiet even if I stamped on the pedal. I fixed this by adjusting the velocity curve for the 'hi-hat closed pedal' articulation. Lastly, doing all this tweaking to your preferred default kit and then overwriting the default project is a must so you don't have to do this all over again the next time you run SD3.
you can simply save all midi settings as your own custom settings.. you can make limitless versions.. and they can be imported as well.. I have different MIDI hihat settings and snare settings, depending on the chosen SD3 kit and depending on the song I am doing... Note: I have now ditched the VH-11 controller as that simply does not work well enough with SD3 samples.. i now use FD-9 but with the VH-11 cymbal mounted on a hihat stand (with removed pedal!).. it does then not move up and down with the pedal, but it does move naturally as I set the feather to very soft.. and the triggering is 200% better regarding transitions between half open to half closed and all in between.. nb: I am demoing this to Roland sometime soon.. within 1-2 months (they requested it and they might do a video of it) so maybe they will use the input.. or not.. who knows.. but just a tip to get the best triggering of samples on a hihat.
I really do appreciate your video and the help it provided. I own a TD-25 and i coupled it to SD3 as well as the sounds that come within the Roland module are really cheap. After struggling for quite a long time i managed to configure both sides really well (the 3 zones on the snares work fine - thanx to one of your vids) ... except for the hi hats for wich cc values are from 0 to 90 on the TD-25 module. The articulations of the hi hats are only available if a note number is assigned to them. The note number for different openness are not available in the module. As i tried everything you explain here, may i ask you what kind of values must be entered here? I guess it must not be linked to the values of the dots in the SD3 monitor...? All my open values sound like openness 6 value although all tips and edges articulations are turned on. I tried everything. Thanks for your eventual answer.
Hey Thomas, as I never owned a TD25 module, I could just guessing. When your module just provides values up to 99, did you try to adjust in SD3 accordingly? Like assigning "Open 6" to the value 99, then "Open 5" to, let's say, 90 and so on? Does that work? Furthermore, you can use the envelope settings on the "Drums" page (found on the right side) to finetune the response.
@@MikeLuke First, a big thank you for your answer, i really do appreciate you take some of your time for that ;-) I did try what you suggest, without good results. I'll try your recommandation regarding the envelope settings. Whether I manage to set it up correctly or not, i'll let you know , I at least owe you that. Have a great day, Mike and keep posting, we like it!
Man, thank you. These tips made instant sense and a notable change in the playability of my setup. TD-27 and annoying as hell VH10 hat. Its not enough to ONLY play with the sliders in SPD3's hihat control, which is exactly what I was doing. After diving into the range numbers on the TD-27 module, at least as a starting reference point, to match up with the SPD3 hihat range numbers made way bigger of a difference than I expected. Again, many many thanks for your time and clear instruction on this one Mike. Maybe now I can hold onto my $1000+ for the comically overpriced digital 14D hihat a little longer eh?
Hello Mike. Compliments for your instruction video's. They are very helpful. I'm using SD3 with the Roland TD30. I am busy with the 'Use the positional sensing pads' feature. For the snare it works perfect but for the other pads i'm struggling. Maybe you have some expert tips? Thanx in advance for any reaction. Cheers, Paul
Hi Paul, thanks for watching und reaching out. Well, the problem is that other pads than the snare do not support positional sensing. It‘s just the snare and the ride that do support this feature. Hope this helps! Cheers, Mike
Mike, great video. Great flow to the information. Question for you: do you see any benefits to connecting your module to your computer using USB instead of a MIDI cable?
I have a TD27 module, so I'm guessing I need to make the same changes to it as well? For example, to make changes to the midi control, midi global, extra?
Hi Mike, Great videos from you and so helpful, thanks a lot! I am daring to ask you for some more general advice as I have just started using SD3 and am a bit desperate. I am using a MacBook - connected via USB with the Roland TD-50 module. I do get the signal into SD3 and can listen to my playing by plugging headphones into the MacBook. But my original thought was, that it should be possible to get the SD3 layered sounds directly into the TD-50. I just don't know how, i.e. which settings I have to use at the TD-50 (tried out anything already). Here’s some details of current settings: - In SD3, it says in the Audio/MIDI-Setup for "Audio Device": Device type: CoreAudio; Output Device: Built-in Output (there are no further options for both than those) - When I change in TD-50 the Driver mode from „Generic“ to „Vendor“, no signal is transmitted anymore to SD3 - TD-50: I have set under MIDI-Setup „Local Control“ to ON (when setting "Off", I don't hear anything anymore in TD-50) - I had recently installed the latest driver from the Roland site Could you please help me and describe how you are doing this? Are you using an additional usb audio interface? What other settings have you used under MIDI Setup (Basic, Sync)? Thanks so much for any advice - also from anyone - and best regards from Frankfurt, Germany! :-) Cheers, Michael
Hi, Mike I have a TD25kv with the VH-11 and i tried all the steps and failed... I can't even use the preset TD25 because all hits on it are open! weird stuff. Someone is having the same problem here?
Mike, new subscriber and new drummer as well. I recently got the TD 17 KV and I’m loving it. As you have loads of experience on this subject, would I better served to invest in a standalone high hat and better cymbals (like the kvx) or get a vst like sd3 or ezdrummer 2? I’m an at home player only and wish to eventually record. Thanks in advance and I enjoy listening to your playing.
Hi, thanks for your question. Well, it all comes down to the quality of your gear. A software like EzDrummer maybe sounds better than the module, but when you have crappy gear that’s not set up correctly or properly, the software won’t respond accordingly. So no matter what HiHat you use, you have to make sure to set it up properly. But in general: the better the gear, the better your results will be, of course.
Mike Luke thanks for input. Yeah I think I will go ahead and get the vh10, and cy 12/13 cymbals as being a newbie I’m pretty content with sounds I’m getting from module. Then later down the road, I’ll get a vst......I’m still learning basics anyhow.
Hi Francis, unfortunately I can't. Simply because I do not have all different Roland VH-series at my disposal to make videos for all different combinations.
@@MikeLuke - Just one question, is it possible to remove any openness levels? For example remove 4 and 5? I find that sometimes the shift between these upper levels can be a little jarring.
Steve Mitchelmore Yes, no problem. On the drums page there’s a little button in top which is called „articulations“. Just click on the hats to highlight them, click on that „articulations“ window, then a list with all articulations for that particular instrument shows up. Just disable the ones you don’t like and you’re ready to go. By the way, using this window gives you even more flexibility. By clicking on one articulation, let’s say „Open 2“, you can then even adjust the volume or trigger setting for that particular articulation without affecting the rest.
This is an unusually thorough and instructive tutorial compared to the normal RUclips faire. Danke shoen mein freunde! Now, maybe others will be challenged or inspired to make a video on a slightly different setup. Although I'm not in crisis, I am frustrated and pissed as fuck that I can't dial in the subtlties of my hi-hat technique. As far as that technique is concerned, I do a lot of what I call 'breathing' where I'm playing 1/8th notes on the hi-hat using wood strokes while releasing pressure of the pedal causing a subtle vacuum of sorts that gives the hi-hat ride texture.
Hello... Great explanation there. One question I have is, I am contemplating to buy the SD3. But my edrums are pretty basic (Carlsbro SC D600). So, would I be able to seamlessly use/exploit superior drummer no matter the make or model of my electronic kit? Meaning, be is a top of the line Roland or the $750 model which I'm possessing, would the sounds generated be the same with both these kits when interfaced or setup properly with the SD3 VST? ( here that I'm ruling out the quality difference of the pads which should surely be evident between the kits and the discomfort of smaller pads on the $750 kit). The crux of the question is, would I be able to bring out the similar sounding grooves or licks from the SD3 VST no matter the kit used?
Yes, it’s true. For triggering those sounds from SD3 it doesn’t matter at all which kit you use. Because after all it’s just a MIDI note you send to the software to trigger a sound and SD3 actually doesn’t care which kit you play. ;) However, as you stated, the difference will be how good and accurate the pads or the kit in general will translate your playing.
@@MikeLuke definitely agree and Thanks a ton for your valued response on the SD VST. Now, that makes me to confidently purchase SD3 vst and invest time on it and carefully tune my Carlsbro ekit to trigger SD3 properly... But like you rightly said, the Kit itself is the player. At least, true with me as this is the only kit that I possess or possessed and I don't have any manual kit or better edrum kit. All that I learn and play is thru this ekit (Carlsbro CS D600- Made in the UK). This kit is their top of the line though. But someone else have to compare their stock sounds with that of a $ 2k Roland or Alesis Module. But as I said I rely on VST. So the module doesn't matter to me. Not to let down the Carlsbro kit completely, it does have great value for money and definitely lives more than it's value but it is still not a perfect kit and has its own cons. Any chance you have tried the CS D600 ekit before and stock module tones of it?
This might be an already replied or stupid comment but when I save this off-sound settings those apply not only to that kit but allof them (am using a td50)... Same for all the sensisitvy trigger settings.. So why the additional kit if I may ask?
Thanks for your comment and tip here. It's just for my own convenience. Never used the TD50. All I remember is that for some older modules you had to save different banks of presets and settings.
@@MikeLuke thanks Mike, it is actually OK, it takes the whole delays and all off, which is great and allow me to plug my headphones on brain and receive SD sounds straight in. I just turned it off and on, so that's good. You have any advice or video for the non real response of pads on SD3? I get some very low and other louder, and the response is kinda weird... Checked the interval levels, all good, but don't manage to represent the hits on SD3...
Great Find! I'm doing a live gig with a drummer and I'm not impressed with the sounds of the TD50X (KV2) I'm thinking my go to here is SD3, can you tell me what i need to connect the units together, should I use a mic pre? I hear rumors that you can control the separate drums sound from SD3 via the sliders on the TD50x Module. sorry for all the questions, but I want to make sure I get on track the first time correctly instead of trial by error. Thank You!
Hi! You can connect the TD50 drum module directly with your laptop which runs SD3 as the module has an internal audio interface. You cannot control SD3 with the faders on the module though.
If you want to use separate outputs with the SD3 sounds, you need an external interface connected with your laptop and the drum module. Then set the individual outputs in SD3 accordingly.
Great video Mike! Do you have (or can you make) a video on setting up the entire TD kit to be properly mapped in SD3 and to have the same "sensitivity" that playing the TD module does? I am definitely not getting the same dynamic response from the SD3 as I get from playing the TD brain... And I don't have the tom rims assigned to anything (TD usually has every triggering surface already set up to a sound). I also have lots of "not loaded". At the very least could you do a video showing how you assign lets say a cowbell to a tom rim, and then maybe delete some kit pieces in SD3 to match your physical setup. I cant find videos on this. I'd like to do drum covers using SD3 but until it can feel as real as the response from the TD, I'll have to keep using the TD as a sound source...
When I read this I thought oh no the king of electronic drum technology has gone back to acoustic because he is tired of all the problems you can only pull your hair out for so long right We have been thinking of moving fro BFD to SD3 after a month of trying to get the hats to work as they do with the module now we now are thinking twice
Set "closed tight" a bit higher in the hi-hat pedal control (10:38) if it's not too much. I had the same issues with my TD1kv. If you have an older drumkit or when you have your current drumkit for a while, make sure there is no dust or other build up between the mechanism at the hi-hat part and/or the pedals itself. My friend had that happening on his VH13's.
Hi Mike Luke, Great lesson! Now I have my ideal setting for my hihat by taking the preset MORE CLOSED. So I adjusted it for my taste. But how do I save this new setting? Thanks.
Hi Mike, Javi again. You’re are using a VH12 model, with the top and bottom pads included. For the hi-hat Roland VH11 model (mine), is this configuration valid/recommeded too? Thanks. My module is the ROLAND TD17.
11:05 this is the secret sauce. I got my kit 6 months ago and watched this video and for some reason did everything but match the numerical values up on both the module and sd3. I guess I missed it the first time or didn’t watch the whole thing.
Hi Mike, Thanks so much for the tutorial, it saved me after a week of not being able to figure it out. Now however, my Roland CY-13R ride pad is not triggering properly. I have a crash in zone 1, bow tip in zone 2, and crash in zone 3 (bell). I have tried to remap it and I'm getting a bell sound but I can't seem to get all three zones sorted....I'd be happy with just bow and bell to be honest but I can't get that to work either. Any chance you could help me figure it out? Cheers and thanks again for all the great videos.
I can just guess here. What I always recommend: check if your ride works properly when using the internal sounds of the module, that way you know at least if the issue occurs on the hardware side of things or within SD3
@@MikeLuke Thanks, yes I should have mentioned that I checked that and it was perfect from my td-9. I've done everything from the HH video, all the settings in the td-9 are right. I am also using the td-9 mapping preset in SD3. In SD3 the bell midi note number is different than the triggered number....like in is 53 and out is 59.
@@MikeLuke I did try that but couldn't get it right. I'll keep working on it. In the hats video you mentioned a setting where the t-30 had to show a number (4) for the hi-hat trigger so that SD3 would know it was a Roland hi-hat. Is it the same for the CY-13 R and if so, what is the correct number? Thanks Mike.
Thank you for the wonderful helpful video. By the way, I have a question ... The sound of the hi-hat is different when it is recorded and when it is played back. Is there a solution? I think it's a symptom peculiar to VH-12 ...
Really helpful, thanks! Do you experience problems with using your hihat with foot only? Mine triggers some additional articulations instead of just one/two (so, foot down = close hihat). TD-50 and VH-13
I never used the VH-13 with the TD-50, but fine tuning the hats really needs some time. Though I know that no one wants to read Manual‘s, in this case I’d recommend it. You can adjust sensitivity, for example
hi, can you help me to set my superior drummer 3 working? I'm using splitter to have extra cymbal and everytime I close the program the sitting resets. i would like to have them saved if it's possible. or you can help me to set it through zoom and i will pay for it. thank you
Hi Lars, once you‘ve assigned everything, you need to save it as a user preset. Doing this will allow you to easily recall your settings next time you open the software. Start SD3, open your user preset and off you go. Hope this helps.
Hi Mike ✌️.... I got all the 6 hi-hat articulations playing really well 👌between the open and close (Actually my hat pad is a 2 zone Hi-Hat, so I must say, I got all 12 articulations of the hi-hat playing properly between the open and close of the pedal, which is really good). But the sad part now is that, I don't get the closed pedal(chic) and the open pedal (splash) sounds when I only open and close the pedal or HH controller 😔(I mean without hitting the Hi-Hat pad here). What must I do? My HH pad is actually mapped to tip trigger and edge trigger articulations of SD3. I think something is going wrong there with the pad mapping. The HH controller is mapped to CC#4 of course and hope that must be right. For me, the Splash is still okay to forgo and I don't bother much even if it sounds or it doesn't. But what about the CLOSED PEDAL sound? I believe that is really needed for the playing. Should I be reassigning the pads to something here? Is mapping the HH pads to Edge Trigger and Tip Trigger fine? Please do let me know. Thank you!!! FYI: Mine is an Alesis DM10 MKII module.
Welche HiHat spielst Du denn?
Thanks for the great video Mike! One question: is it possible to take the Openness 6 articulation 'out of circulation'? For me, I don't know that I would want that level of openness when I take my foot off the pedal. If one can't disable that articulation all together, I suppose the only other option is to physically adjust the HH pedal so that the controller never fully reaches 0. Is that basically it?
Hi, yes, you can do this. Just right-click in the HiHat slot, go in the top right corner to „All articulations“ and just disable the ones you don’t like. By disabling „Open 6“, the software will automatically trigger the one below, in this case „Open 5“.
I am using the VH-11 together with a Roland TD-15 module. This combination sends CC ranges of 0..90 only and there is no way to reconfigure it in the module. So I had to adjust the CC range in Superior Drummer 3, which might be your solution too.
What if you only have a single Hi-Hat not the double (without the clutch) as in TD15 standard kit? It operates great with the internal sounds using foot pedal, so how do I tune it for SD3?
Well, it's basically a similar approach. Get your hats as smooth as it gets in your module, then do the finetuning in SD3 as described. The MIDI information sent from your module are the same as on more expensive hats. SD3 will handle that.
Hello Mike, thanks for a great video - I have a TD27 KV and i am triggering SD3, I have followed your guide however something strange is randomly happening when i am playing 8th notes on the hats when they are open (open 2 and open 3) The sound suddenly goes from an open hat sound to a closed sound as if i have closed the hats. Is there a midi setting on the TD-27 brain i have to adjust to stop this from happening? Thanks!
@@mcn1ff Easiest way to help solve this problem was to add a cut down a hihat felt and place it to the base part - this acts as a cushion to when you are playing the hihat it cannot accidentally fully close (unless you are applying heavy pressure to the pedal) it's not perfect but it sort of fixes the problem until Roland redesign the TD27 hihat
God bless you ! I never find any instructional tutorial for the e-drummer about SD3, there is just content for mixing, etc. Thank you so much Mike for releasing such content. Your video is very clear, perfect guide.

Hi Jeff, thanks for your kind words. I'll do my very best to help and I'm glad this might help you.
Thank you very much, it helps me a lot to setup my VAD503 Hi-Hat with Drummer Sup3 !!
You‘re welcome, thanks for watching
Wonderful spoken English! I learn Italian so I know how hard it is to learn another language.
Thank you!
For BFD3 owners, the guide is similar. Just at different locations in the software.
This video continues to be so incredibly helpful. Thank you.
Cheers! Glad it still helps 😎
Excellent! Thank you for taking the time to do such an informative, well produced video.
Cheers Kevin! I hope it helped
Great video and cool that you show it with a TD-30, since most people do use this one. However the hi-hat scale is present in many Roland Modules. So the principle is universal.
I also like the zoom in and out. Very well made and a great knowledge source.
I realize that HiHat settings are an issue for many people. Thanks for watching, my friend.
Will these same settings be there in Roland TD10?
Thanks for watching and I hoped it helps even with the TD-50.
Hi Sal, yes, I know about the Local Control. But I never use the internal sounds, not even for practicing. ;)
Thank you.
Toontrack should pay you for this great video.
Marcelo Zanuski Haha, no, they don’t need to, I just like to help other drummers and musicians. Thanks for watching!
This was so helpful! Searched forever to find this topic solved. Thanks
You’re welcome, Alan. Glad I could help
such a great video! do you also have a video showing how to optimize the TD-30 snare drum with SD3?
Thank you so much for creating this! It’s shocking that both Roland and toontrack haven’t been bothered to make this work better out of the box seeing as both brands are the industry standards that many will use together. I’ve had several Roland kits over the years and the Hihat triggering is terrible without all of these tweaks. It’s also annoying that it takes this much fiddling around just to have a decent feel! The Roland TD30 cost $14,000 in Australia when it came out, imagine spending that much money to have a clunky system out of the box. Anyway I’ve ranted enough, thanks again for this video!
This was very helpful. Thank you!
What an excellent chap you are. Thanks very much for this.
My hats are triggering fine bit i still watched with great interest - thanks Mike great info
Steve Monti Thanks for watching, dear Steve. Many people had asked me to cover that topic, so I did. ;)
Thank you! This is just what I needed and I've been looking for a video like this since I got SD3!
Thanks Ray, I'm glad I could help.
Fantastically detailed and helpful video, Mike... I know this will help a ton of people
I hope it will as I got so many questions about that issue in the last weeks.
Great video! Your channel has been an amazing asset!
@@MikeLuke Perfect Mike. Thanks for the quick reply. Now i know that it is not my ignorance but that the feature is just only on snare and ride.

Hi Mike,
Great videos from you and so helpful, thanks a lot!
Here’s some details of current settings:
- In SD3, it says in the Audio/MIDI-Setup for "Audio Device": Device type: CoreAudio; Output Device: Built-in Output
(there are no further options for both than those)
- When I change in TD-50 the Driver mode from „Generic“ to „Vendor“, no signal is transmitted anymore to SD3
- TD-50: I have set under MIDI-Setup „Local Control“ to ON (when setting "Off", I don't hear anything anymore in TD-50)
- I had recently installed the latest driver from the Roland site
Could you please help me and describe how you are doing this? Are you using an additional usb audio interface? What other settings have you used under MIDI Setup (Basic, Sync)?
Thanks so much for any advice - also from anyone - and best regards from Frankfurt, Germany! :-)
Cheers,
Michael
Hi, Mike
I have a TD25kv with the VH-11 and i tried all the steps and failed... I can't even use the preset TD25 because all hits on it are open! weird stuff.
Someone is having the same problem here?
That’s weird indeed! Do you hear just open hits when you use the internal sounds from the module, too?
Mike Luke nope! Maybe my module needs and exorcism!!
Thanks man! Very informative! Thanks for putting so much effort into it!
When you start, it’s a steep learning curve. But in the end it’s no rocket science 🤷♂️
Thanks so much! I was about to not record with my V-Kit anymore. :)
Thanks for watching, Todd!
Same problem with my Td17 and my cy5 hi hat with ExDrummer 3. I cant set the right articulation. Can you help me? Thanks a lot.
Thanks so much Mike!! Excellent video. Clear and complete.
Thanks for watching, hope it helped.
I am sure this will help a lot of people Mike!! You know module I am not as familiar with mine!!
Hoi Mike Luke, is it necessairy on the TD50 to set the LOCAL CONTROL OFF as well? Great tutorial 👍🏾

Gute morgen und danke ! ( Belgien) 😉
Hi Mike. Is it also possible to make a video for setting up VH-11 with Addictive Drums 2? Hoping you can read this. Thank you from Los Angeles.
Hi Francis, unfortunately I can't. Simply because I do not have all different Roland VH-series at my disposal to make videos for all different combinations.
@@MikeLuke Do you also use AD2? My issue is with Hi-Hat sensitivity.
SD3 won't sense the openess of my hihat in FL Studio? All notes play open.
Fantastic video, very well filmed and explained.
Cheers Steve. Glad I could help.
@@MikeLuke- Awesome, just what I was looking for. Thanks Mike

Thank you for your videos Mike; please can you make a video about cymbal choking in SD3? I can´t get it in any way with my e-kit, thank you.
Hi, I can’t, because I don’t have my e-drums anymore. But the Owner‘s manual is pretty helpful on this.
@@MikeLuke Thank you Mike.
Because after all it’s just a MIDI note you send to the software to trigger a sound and SD3 actually doesn’t care which kit you play. ;)
However, as you stated, the difference will be how good and accurate the pads or the kit in general will translate your playing.
Clement Thomas No, I never had the Chance to play it. I played Roland, Yamaha and 2Box.
Thanks a ton Mike! You save everyone so much time and straight get on to playing music :D

@@MikeLuke thanks Mike. So how do I separate the outputs?
If you want to use separate outputs with the SD3 sounds, you need an external interface connected with your laptop and the drum module. Then set the individual outputs in SD3 accordingly.
@@MikeLuke can you recommend one?
Hi, I can’t, because I don’t have my e-drums anymore. But the Owner‘s manual is pretty helpful on this.
When I read this I thought oh no the king of electronic drum technology has gone back to acoustic because he is tired of all the problems you can only pull your hair out for so long right
We have been thinking of moving fro BFD to SD3 after a month of trying to get the hats to work as they do with the module now we now are thinking twice
Anyone having trouble with Roland TD-9 and VH-10 HH?
Even if i press the HH control all way down the sound of HH its not fully closed.
@@annekedebruyn7797 i already solved this problem by updating my SD3.
What an Excellent tutorial Thank you

You are welcome, Marcos.
Hi Mike Luke, Great lesson! Now I have my ideal setting for my hihat by taking the preset MORE CLOSED.
So I adjusted it for my taste. But how do I save this new setting? Thanks.
Save it in the top left corner or as a combined preset.
Just brilliant hugely beneficial Thanks Mike
Cheers David.
Hi
Is there also a Way to get a perfect Hi-Hat on EZ2?

Hi Mike, Javi again. You’re are using a VH12 model, with the top and bottom pads included. For the hi-hat Roland VH11 model (mine), is this configuration valid/recommeded too? Thanks. My module is the ROLAND TD17.
I also adjusted my other pads, much better! Thanks again!
You are warmly welcome, Rob.
Thanks, Mike. Great info.
11:05 this is the secret sauce. I got my kit 6 months ago and watched this video and for some reason did everything but match the numerical values up on both the module and sd3. I guess I missed it the first time or didn’t watch the whole thing.
how it works for Pearl Mimic Pro?
Then you can easily use the „learn“ feature to manually assign the right MIDI note to the corresponding articulation.
Excellent video, great job!
Thank you!
Thank you for this video. Cheers!
Excellent info and guide! Thanks a lot! 👏👏
hi, can you help me to set my superior drummer 3 working?
Welche HiHat spielst Du denn?
urgggg I can't get my VH14 to trigger as well as yours. I tried all your settings.
The VH14 is a different beast as it’s digitally connected. So the settings might differ.
What about the TD 25? It’s different in the menu and I have a hard time getting it to trigger accurately in SD2 and SD 3
Yeah, me too!! The TD-25 hi hat VH11 does not work properly!
I am using the VH-11 together with a Roland TD-15 module. This combination sends CC ranges of 0..90 only and there is no way to reconfigure it in the module. So I had to adjust the CC range in Superior Drummer 3, which might be your solution too.
Reiner Rosin right on ... I’ll check it out.
can you please do the same video using SSD 5 ? Thank you
I can’t because I neither have my electronic drums anymore nor the module.
no problem , thanks for the reply .
Mike Luke Thanks Mike, very helpful :-)
Question: Is it possible to play the HiHat from the SD3 VST with a standard sampling pad plus a foot controller such as a damping pedal?
Thank you so much! It helped so much!!
Cheers!
Thanks!
Hard to tell from a distance as I never had the TD27
Did you ever solve this problem? I have the same issue with the TD-27!
