I'm astounded by the amount of drummers with electronic kits that haven't utilized their MIDI output into a DAW with a VST drum plug-in.
This is exactly why I'm buying an electronic kit. I wanna record drums at home and not mess around with noise complaints while having access to top tier samples.

This is a proper lightbulb moment for me. I’ve put off buying an e-kit due to the awful samples, but with this software and the superior drummer software, I think I’m finally going to take the plunge.
I already have a little home studio with Logic Pro x, so I’m all set!
Any advice on the most cost effective kit with decent feeling pads would be appreciated! 😁👍🏻

@@timpricedrums Look at EFNOTE. They trigger amazingly well with VSTs and have the best hi hats available (excluding the costly Roland digital hats). Another great option is to go without a module and get an eDrumIn. The triggering control with the eDrumIn is top notch and you can cobble together a bunch of used stuff for short money to get started if budget is a concern.

Exactly! Most of those drum samples sound BETTER than what I could get with my acoustic kit. Don't get me wrong, I have a nice kit, but I don't have the amazing mics or the mastering experience that the ones that recorded these samples did.

It's also great to as well as record using MIDI from my Roland kit to trigger the kits in EZ Drummer, to also take stereo lines out from the brain and record the audio at the same time. Surprisingly very few, because as you said the EZD samples sounds so amazing that people think the e drum kit module produce the sounds, besides for small venues you got the sound pressure level so much controlled, for me is easy to mix with the rest of the band, acoustic drums are awesome but they need a complex mic technique, if you set the E-drum module in the right way the results are so natural when you play

Another awesome video by Nick. However, I like to point out that there are differences between the standalone version and the plugin version in the setup instructions.
I am using this with Ableton Live 11, but this should apply to all or most DAWs. When using the plugin version (which I think is really a call to the standalone
version passing a parameter that places it into a "plugin mode") there is NO OPTION in the SETUP tab to select AUDIO/MIDI setup. Instead it only shows
EDRUM/MIDI IN. Selecting this brings you to the PRESET selection screen. From there you do the same as in the video to select which kit you have and the
section optimizing the HiHat instrument. At this point there is no option to select a buffer size in EZDRUMMER 3. Instead you can bring up a screen that
shows buffer sizes, but this is from the ASIO driver, not EZDRM 3 and it won't allow you to change that buffer size because it's in use by the program.
This may be an Ableton thing, but I have no way to verify that. So this may only apply to Ableton, your mileage may vary.
BUT, there is no need to change any buffer size as it all seems to work just fine with absolutely no latency or delay of any kind (at least on my PC which
is a mid level unit, not a gaming machine and I am using a Roland TD27 kit). Everything else follows the video exactly.
One more problem I ran into. I am using the internal interface of the TD27 module, so the resulting audio goes back to the TD27 and I use the headphone
output from there to monitor the sound. When I strike a drum or any trigger on the kit, I hear not only the EZDRMR 3 sound, but the sound coming from
the TD27 kit. So there are two sounds coming into the headphones. There is no way to use the triggers on the TD27 without having a drum kit selected.
This really had me stopped for a while. I fixed this by noticing that there is a special button on the TD27 called "kit volume". By selecting that on the
TD27, was able to set the volume to "-INF" which is essentially 0 AUDIO output, the trigger output
still comes out to the PC. Problem fixed. You can pick any drum kit in the TD27 and do this as you are
not going to use the synthesized drums in the KIT anyway.
So I hope this extra bit of info helps anyone having trouble integrating their electronic drums in a DAW using the PLUGIN version.
And thanks, Nick, for a great video.
    Joel

    • @sweetwater

Hey photographerjonathan, great question! EZ Drummer does have its own mixing engine built in so you can complete a drum track. It cannot record anything else though! My work flow with this program is to use it as a plugin within a DAW. There, after designing your drum groove, you can route each drum to its own track within the DAW and mix how you would normally!

Hey David, fantastic question! You will need a solid, low latency Audio Interface. I recommend the Motu M2, as it has incredibly low latency and sounds great:

I noticed that for certain parts in my e-kit like my snare and cymbals the volume is kinda low no matter how hard I hit it compared to how it should sound.

Nick!!! You're convincing me to change from acoustic to electronic kit. It's been on my mind for the last while. Only problem is I freelance for wedding bands so I'm always playing with different bands, so not sure how that would work for them as loads don't have great monitoring on stage. Would ya setup the kit with a wedge so guitarists and singers can hear what you're playing if they don't have in ears? Or would this just be too much hassle?

Hello, Mark! The way you described is commonly how this is done when drummers gig with e-kits. Best case scenario is always going to be in ear monitors, that way each member of the band can more precisely control how much of it they are hearing. Even in those situations though, it is nice to have some sort of a drum amp or stage wedge on the stage to provide some degree of stage volume, which is lost without an acoustic kit. If you ask me, bringing a small monitor is not too much of a hassle considering all of the benefits you gain with an e-kit - no need for mic’ing, access to different tones on the fly, volume control, etc…
      Thanks for the interest!

Hey Justin great vid a usual! Its amazing how much you know. You're like the Thomas Edison of e-drums. I have a question I can't get an answer from anyone. Can you trigger Alesis SR-18 sounds from pads thru a Roland TD-27 module? I was thinking if I connect with midi it might work. Alesis and Roland have no no phone support. And also what is the best headphones for e-drums? I have Bose quiet comfort and have problems with distortion. Thanks!!

Hey, Richard. Thanks for reaching out.
You should be able to via mid since both units have midi ins and outs.
The headphones I use are the Beyerdynamic DT770 pro. Super comfortable and no distortion.
      Hope this helps.

    Hi Nick,
Great video! I'm quite a novice at e-drumming. I have owned an ALESIS DM10-Pro kit since probably 2009, and about the only upgrade I've ever done to it has been putting mesh heads on it (with questionable success). It's not the latest. It's not the greatest, but it's what I have to work with right now. I'm not even sure if that model is still supported by ALESIS or not or if that even matters to get better sounds out of it. Is an old DM10 Pro still relevant?
I guess I need an "E-Drums 101" type video to learn some of the basics first. I'm not sure where to begin. Any advice? - Anyway, I need to learn how to utilize it better now. I'm joining a band that uses Band Helper Software, which can save sounds for every song for every instrument in the bands set list, but first, I need to learn how to program new and better sounds into my old DM10-Pro.

This is exactly what I do with freedrums, a program that is meant for air drumming with sticks made by the same company as freedrums.

I'm getting back into drumming after 30 years, just got a kit from Donner. One problem, the default sound the unit comes with is a bit disappointing, very flat with no range, all hits sound the same no matter how hard I hit. Do you think that is fixable with this software? You have range but you are also on a much more expensive kit by Roland.

    Hi
I didnt Read all comments, so it might be that the question is answered....
    But
Are the presets for all the edrums existing without installing the driver or do you see the special preset for your edrum kit only in that case, that the special driver is installed.
Without connecting any drumkit and installing any driver i dont see any preset.
The Video sounds as if ez drummer would have all the presets out of the box on board
    Thanks a lot

Hey, BenevolentDrums. You will need a midi interface to do that. I’d check into something like the MOTU micro lite:
