“I feel like a lot of people, when they see me play, they think, ‘Oh, it's going to be super aggressive, and there's a lot of shades of that,” shares Jared James Nichols. “But I'm so obsessed with the tone, the feel of it…. Growing up listening to Jeff Beck, Albert King, guys like that; the super feel stuff to me is where it's at.”
That sentiment is overwhelmingly clear when hearing just a single note of Nichols’ playing. And what makes his musicianship that much more compelling is his abandonment of the pick-most of the time, he’s not really “fingerpicking,” but he uses his fingers to shred like any picking guitarist. He explains, “I'm a lefty, so that's where it originated. I tried to use a pick, and I was really uncoordinated. I can play a lot of the same riffs that someone could do with a pick, but play ’em and they sound a lot different.”
Earlier this year, Nichols came out with his third full-length release, Jared James Nichols, which adds to his catalog 12 more dirt-covered, gritty tunes that dig in with his infectious passion and signature, glistening tone. The album comes on the heels of Nichols’ growing success, bolstered by his extensive touring and tens and thousands of new fans.
Given his commitment to Les Pauls, it’s fitting that Nichols was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, the birthplace of the guitar’s namesake inventor. Now, Nichols is a global ambassador of Gibson Guitars, an honor shared by only four other guitarists. And, since his last Rig Rundown, he was honored with a signature Epiphone guitar. In this new look at his rig, he shares his legion of trusty Les Pauls, as well as why he prefers simplicity when it comes to amps and pedals.

The weird moment when personal means that his new epiphone signature sounds better than the Paul Kossoff les paul. For me the Paul Kossoff sounds like absolute mud. I wanted to say shit but tried to be polite. So I am not. Fuck that one lol, his single p90 epiphone sounds just...better. The single p90 jr also sounds better for vintage mellow.

I saw Paul's comment and decided to reply instead of making my own. I'm not a hard rock guy anymore, but love Jared James - his playing is so different. I almost got an Epiphone Old Glory, but opted for a 1955 reissue instead, since I was born that year, and it has the large rounded neck I like, plus I'm more of a neck pickup guy - and I have a Lollar "staple" pickup, similar to what the original used for more clarity (Les Paul used a Gretch dynasonic until Seth Lover made the staple pickup for him). Jared James is a fun guy with an infectious attitude!

Jared you are correct 1958 was the release of the hard edge double cut juniors and specials and there was a hand full made single cut up until the switch to the SG body shape and during that time when sg was still called the Les Paul they made a batch of original double cut specials in cherry and in the 1961 ledger those guitars which where double cut bodies laying around were mark as “SG” and that’s the strange history of how the original les Paul double cut gave the SG its name

Omg, that old gold top reminds me of seeing Ted Nugent tearing it up on stage in 1977 Gonzo tour. All those crazy harmonics just oozing out of your P90’s on that one. By far best sounding Les Paul of that style I ever heard, as well as Free’s ol burst LP!!!

I was there when Dorothy was debuted in Pennsylvania (Stroudsburg at a little theater called The Sherman Theater). That night there was an unbelievably bad rain storm, it was the tail end of a hurricane that was down south. It caused so many roads to get closed that the trip that would normally be 1 hour for me to get home took nearly 4 hours. I spent 3 hours driving through the mountains from one side road to the next as they were closed. It was an amazing night i will never forget JJN is a beast!
