Well I’ve just spent two hours and a bottle of wine in the kitchen watching this, my wife called me a “sad bellend” for doing so. I disagree. She will have another birthday next year and she needs to understand the importance of these videos. Top work chaps. Also if anyone knows of a reasonably priced bed and breakfast around Merseyside let me know.
The ‘sad bellend’ part is heavily in her favour - very funny and hard to argue with. Bit much to put your birthday ahead of a guitar video, though. Nothing you can’t correct, I’m sure. Might want to plan your main points of debate, though.
I saw how long this video is and thought: "Hmmm.... I'd better save that until I'm in work..." Just point my laptop away from colleagues and look busy... I may even get a promotion. :-)
If you still need it, I'm in Lydiate and have a spare bedroom! Not sure what MY missus would think, but if we work together we could explain the importance of this stuff to both of them.... And then look for a B&B together!! Ha ha ha!
Mick, you are so humble about your guitar repair knowledge as well as being considerate of different peoples opinions and beliefs. All without loosing your sense of humor. If the whole world was as nice as you we would be a far better planet.
@@ThatPedalShow got mine back a few month ago. fretjob + PLEK, amazing. i wish i had chosen steel frets but i was afraid of treblely noise which i had problems with before where my baby had to suffer a lausy fretjob and i wasted 280 bucks.

Exactly that Justin. It’s where your ego says, “Yep, I don’t really need to be here any more” and leaves. In all aspects of life I think wisdom steps in when the ego steps out forever. I’m glad to be on that path - hopefully we’ll all get there one day. Matt is absolutely there in his work. It’s joy to experience!
Fantastic episode Mick. I love watching someone who is a true master of their craft perform their trade. Whether it's Matt or Jonny working on a guitar, or Andy playing guitar, it's inspiring to see the effortless that comes from their 10,000 hours. Enjoy the guitar! Hope you're well. Cheers.
Mick, I love love love that you were not to afraid to take that wonderful piece of history and make it play the way that it should once again! You no doubt will fall in love with it all the more because of it! Beautiful work Matt!
As a fellow luthier, I can attest; the look on Mick’s face at 2:10:55 is priceless and is one of my favorite parts of this trade. Always fun (and useful) to see how different folks go about doing certain parts of this process. Thanks for sharing!
A satisfying yet scary watch in equal measure & it’s not even my guitar! Big admiration for the skill & patience of guys like Matt who make it look so easy, I can only imagine how badly I would screw this up, not that I would dream of attempting such a process! Great video, really interesting and informative!
I admire your spirit about this guitar, Mick. It’s a vintage guitar and it should sound like it but it has to work or what’s the point. Spot on. Cheers from the Big Apple.
100%...when I got my dream guitar...an old 54 Les Paul, I played it for about 3 months with original skinny worn frets...then I had 59 style put in. ZERO regrets. Plays like a dream, sounds even better

Long video… TOTALY WORTH IT!!!!! As a budding personal home luthier, this has been an absolute joy to watch. Thanks so much for sharing the wisdom, experience, technique and tricks of the trade. GOOD SHOW! Cheers mates!
I just had my 1984 MIJ 62' reissue Fender Strat done. It had huge holes in the board and many frets were almost flat with the board. I had it flattened, and the sawdust filled back in the holes. Stainless steel frets, 7.25" vintage size accurate. It made a barely playable guitar play better than most new. Worth every penny. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone if you have a good luthier to do the work.
Here in Arkansas, I’m fortunate to have several buddies who hunt whitetail deer and regularly bring me any antlers not worthy of mounting. This makes a wonderful material for bridges and nuts. I’d be happy to send you some if you like. Just holler.
I would never in a million years thought I’d watch a movie-length video of a refret, but this has actually been and enjoyable and engaging watch. I can only guess at the opinions that might be expressed, but I’d take any of my guitars to this gent in a heartbeat. Excellent work, and seems a good guy, to boot. Thanks for sharing, Mick!
I'm always envious when I see people with these old pieces of art. But I absolutely love how Mick treats it like a guitar instead of a collectors piece, and plays it. It's at least nice knowing that old strat is in wonderful hands.
Same lol. I always think, man, I wish I had a better job, that could afford this sort of luxury lol. Unfortunately, I’m with most of America, just getting by, paying bills, and hopefully going on vacation, once every few years lol. Gotta just be grateful what I do have, like family and health. Although I’d maybe consider trading a family member or two, for a vintage Tele 🤣 That’s the beauty in buying a players grade vintage instrument. You still get all the benefits & joy, of owning & playing a golden era guitar, without having to stress its market value. There’s certainly a place for all original, unicorns, to sit as a museum piece. As a player though, a guitar is useless, if it’s unplayable. With a players grade, pot goes bad? Change it. Need new frets? Replace them. They’re also a fraction of the cost, relatively speaking, so imo, it’s a no-brainer. To each their own though, ya know.
Beautiful work. Seemed so easy. Watched two tours straight, then fell asleep. Woke up 5am to a video about Ritchie Blackmores strats. Went back to the video and watched the last ten minutes. Loved every minute of it!
I really admire the experience, diligence and craftsmanship that goes into the process. There aren’t many things that I’m more happy to spend good money on than having my gear set up really well, because good craftsmanship needs to be honoured and paid accordingly.
Zen and the art of refretting. It's really a special experience watching Matt working on the Strat, love it. Plus it made me aware of Monty's anyway. I've ordered two wiring looms and a set of PAFs, happy days.
I am about 60% through this video and can already state that this is one of the best guitar videos I've ever seen on YT. It's fascinating to see all those steps required to do a proper re-fretting of a guitar. And so well interviewed and filmed, too.

As you said, really generous of Matt to let you film and to be so open with his knowledge and experience. I love these videos - it leaves no hiding from the fact that I’m a guitar nerd!
I would like to thank you both, Mick and Matt. That was a great show and demonstration. I think I'll work on some guitars this fall. I had a hiatus over the summer to take care of my special needs son, but he goes back to his mother next week. I need some guitar therapy and this video has got the amateur guitar tech wannabe bug going again.
Thanks Mick for showing us your baby getting worked on....As much as my 1st love was Hank Marvin, i always for 35 years body decked my trem...for same reasons as you - pedal steel/unison bending will love you for it. Thanks to Matt for sharing his tips. Great first video to enjoy while eating a Saturday morning fry up in sunny (unusually for this year) Sydney
Thank you for this! Loved this long form video. I watched the whole thing and it was absolutely great! Thanks to Matt for being so generous with his time. It's a lot to ask someone to be filmed while they're working, and yet he couldn't have been more gracious. Cheers
Two full hours of a guy filing, sanding, and waxing?! Worth every minute. May the legendary 61 continue to sound even greater (of course, you could lend it to me 😎 but no guarantees).
Two amazing gents, I really enjoyed seeing Matts skills in progress and Micks total satisfaction at receiving his finished work piece. Love and respect!
Matt and Mick, thank you so much how informative and very very interesting, how generous of Matt to put himself out there naked “so to speak” doing his work , for me it only cemented the fact he is totally confident with his end product . Fantastic upload Mick really enjoyed it . Cheers John
It's pretty obvious that Matt is doing his job with a super natural flow ~~ He does not NEED to think or get OCD about anything. That clearly shows how professional and experienced he is. Super talented, and incredibly experienced. I would love to hand him two of my beloved vintage guitars for fresh refret jobs in the future, pity that currently I'm all the way here in Australia at the moment! Maybe next year or the year after that! Cheers!
What a brilliantly talented and nice guy Matt is. A wealth of knowledge and experience with a lovely open and sharing attitude. Probably my favourite TPS video. Well done all! 👍🏻

That moment where all of the wood is polished up and shiny, there's not much that's better as a woodworker, luthier, or player. All that work and effort pays off in an instant. Thanks for the inspiration to get into the shop, Matt.
A well setup guitar is a thing of joy and beauty. Thanks to Matt for taking us through his process. Totally enjoy these episodes and always learn something new. The smile on Mick’s face to get it back in his hands was worth the wait.
Okay, I clicked on the video, and thought, maybe I'll watch 5 or 10 minutes (I mean who wants to watch a complete fret job?!). But holy cow, I was mesmerized by the whole process and watched diligently from start to finish. Massive kudos to Matt for allowing Mick to film the complete process! Also, to be clear boys and girls, even if by some measure, you went and purchased all the tools Matt has, you do not have his experience, or insight on how to do all the things he does. This is a dying art, and needs to be appreciated.
Fretking Inc in Cary NC did my Strat with stainless steel frets about 10 years ago. It still plays like new. It's fantastic what a good luthier can do. I loved this video. Just seeing someone so skilled and someone else so appreciative of the results is a real pleasure. There there's how much I learned. A sincere thanks for this awesome video.
Not always a fan of long RUclips videos. But I was engrossed in every minute of this episode. Excellent guitar-nerd content and human interaction in this one. Please work some more of these into future plans.
Wow. Sandpaper on the profiling file. That's genius. Getting that round crown on top has always been my most dreaded part of fret dressing. Never thought of that trick. Thank you!
I wish this guy was near me to repair my Fullerton made 1982 Stratocaster. I could take the easy way out and put a nice new neck on it. But it would destroy both the value and the meaning of the instrument. Not only have I worn down the frets, but I have even worn down some of the rosewood playing it over the years. Thanks for this post and reminding me of how much I have loved my guitars!
That was amazing to watch. Thank you Mick and Matt for sharing this. I have always wanted to see this type of work being done. Just a fascinating watch.
Great video, watching a man who's obviously put in the graft to learn his craft (there's a song there somewhere 🤔😂) was thoroughly enjoyable, surprisingly relaxing and a privalage, .. Just spent the best part of my evening watching this. Thanks for sharing 🙏🎸👍
Thank you so much Mick and Matt for this extraordinary wonderful video. It’s so full of empathy, loveliness and deep knowledge in every matter and detail you both are living for!!
In a similar way to Dan’s guitar build. Mesmerising. Matt seems such a nice guy and clearly talented. Thanks for the video Mick and pleased you are so happy with the outcome.
I loved this episode. I try and do as much work as possible on my guitars but I have never messed with frets. This is a great reference if I ever decide to pick up a file. Great job Mick, and thanks for including the whole process.
Thank you Mick, watching this is a real education. Matt is so confident of everything he does and is a joy to listen to, his year’s of experience shines through. Just a brilliant watch.
Fascinating !! I had been thinking of trying to refret one of my guitars - you changed my mind. Thank you so much !! My hands would not have survived and I would have ruined a guitar.
This was not just a pleasure to watch, but as a guitar repair tech(I do not call myself a luthier!) I learned some new techniques and approaches, and not only that I was reassured that Matt uses the same as some of my own techniques. Also, I met Matt at the Birmingham guitar show this year. We spoke for a good 20 minutes at this stand, He is a top bloke who makes time to listen, also very humble. He doesn’t realise how good he actually is and his contribution to repairs and upgrades are up there with the best I have ever seen or heard. I am so wanting a set of his pickups in the future.
Wow. I just set my Strat up using the method mentioned here and it saved my relationship with my Strat. 1.5mm on the high E with the gradual increase to 2mm. Plays like butter now and feels like a different guitar! This video was worth that bit alone. I am like Mick and thought I needed higher action, but something about that set up just works!!!
I had always though (been told by StewMac) that they should follow the radius, so middle strings highest. Glad to have independent confirmation that I understood what Matt said correctly.

I watched through all of this in a single breath. Matt is so skillful and generous. Glad to see this precious guitar turn into something even better!
One of the absolute coolest techy vids you've done yet. The world is better for Mick having his '61 so beautifully set up.
Absolute blast of episode. Matt is a guitar luthier genius and also nice guy to listen to.
Thank you so much Mick and Matt for this extraordinary wonderful video. It’s so full of empathy, loveliness and deep knowledge in every matter and detail you both are living for!!
Thanks Matt & Mick!
Two hours well spent.
What a gentleman, so knows his stuff! I know who i need to take my guitars to when i get them setup properly!
These longer guitar maintenance videos are the best! Good chats and interesting content. Cheers!
What an episode!! Thank you so much for sharing this!
I have been doing re frets for a few decades and my method is almost identical ! So great to see ! Thank You for the video !
Now that I’m watching this again for the fifth time, I realize you guys really used that Reversing Lorry plug-in to its fullest. 😂❤
Fascinating !! I had been thinking of trying to refret one of my guitars - you changed my mind. Thank you so much !! My hands would not have survived and I would have ruined a guitar.
I love watching a master craftsman at work…there’s not many around nowadays…great stuff…thanks guys!!!!
@@GCKelloch I use 10-46 and it’s glorious
I had always though (been told by StewMac) that they should follow the radius, so middle strings highest. Glad to have independent confirmation that I understood what Matt said correctly.
Love Micks little ”very happy and just a little nervous”-laughs.
I liked this episode so much I've watched it twice.
Thank you TPS and Matt for this great video.
