@38:40 I have more respect for Matt every time he appears on TPS. I was thinking when Dan was playing the Tele, “The new pickup winding is close, but we’re not there 100% yet.” And then Matt says exactly what we needed with the precise height adjustments. Amazing knowledge and experience.
Congrats Dan! That is a very guitar player thing to say. "I found the guitar of my dreams. I'm just gonna change the frets, and the pickups and the saddles and the wiring...".
On the nose there. The frets, fair enough. The saddles? well if you must. The wiring though... if the switch is broken, sure replace it, but the whole loom? The tone is significantly different to my ears (such as they are) and I preferred the throaty growl those vintage pots and wiring had. The only reason to buy a vintage guitar is that its parts have aged. To spend that premium then replace the vintage parts? Hey it's his guitar, money, etc. and it's all very interesting to indulge that geekery. I just can't help feeling he's made the original sound like the copy.
One thing that really amazes me with both 'Dan and Micks' vintage guitar journeys is - When they both got the guitar of their dreams in there hands both suddenly seemed to take the next step up in playing standard. While I think a lot of the tone comes from the vintage instrument and pickups, I also think it is the affinity and connection to such an instrument that actually pushes us forward to more inspired playing. (At least this is what I get to hear when Dan and Mick play the instruments of their dreams)
My takeaway from these blogs is that quality of communication to a great luthier is perhaps more important than new, vintage, cheap or expensive. The transfer of the sound and feel in the players head to a great luthier that understands what changes to implement.
Many of the viewers to this channel will resonate with the blissful joy of finding a ‘dream’ guitar, that scratches that itch inside your head. So I trust you will appreciate the depth of sentiment that goes into the simple word Congratulations on finding yours.
Just got my parts Tele put back together, this time with a rosewood neck and I’m loving it. Very hard to avoid making all your guitars similar. You’ve got to just embrace how their differences make you play differently and roll with it. Sounds great, Dan!
100%. I have quite a few teles including 2 Partscasters. One with rosewood neck and for the longest time I didn’t play it much because it isn’t as bright sounding as my others and doesn’t quite twang the same. But lately I’m just enjoying the fact it offers a slightly different tone and rolling with it.
Love this Dan. I have been searching a long time for a 60s SG Junior just like yours. Recently I have been buying teles and P90 guitars. Love them single coils. I was looking for a 60s SG Junior. I don't need two pickups. Buddy at work asked me if I could look at a guitar for him. His father in law died a year ago. I did all the work to find out what it was (pot dating, serial, etc). I told him they probably are $6k on Reverb. It's a 1966 SG Special. So they decided that they didn't want to go through the hassle. They said “maybe I would like it?” I told them I had limited funds in my guitar bank. I just bought it for $3k from them today. It's even better than what I thought. Literally all original and other than the tetanus threatening strings, it is perfect. Cannot wait to get it home and restring it.
that is now one of the sweetest neck ups on a Tele I have ever heard. It'' never be a Red twanger, but it doesn't need to be. its sweet and rounded in the best possible way.
Unsurprisingly, this episode stands up to repeat viewing. So much insight and useful information. Thanks very much indeed team, a delight as always. ......bet Mr Gleeson's waiting list just went up again to boot!
One of the best transformational tones I've been able to witness online. Explained, expounded upon and experienced. I felt I was right there with you Dan. I may have to make some changes now myself after seeing and hearing these results. Congrats on your "new" ol' Tele!!
As jazz guy that uses the neck pickup on the tele almost exclusively, I was really disappointed in the neck tone initially. When I got to the portion of the video where you had the pickup rewound I was so excited to see how you addressed this. It sounds so alive now! Congratulations on this beautiful instrument! Now I want to hear you play more of those Pat Martino licks you mentioned in the last episode!
The first time I met Adrian Ingram at Leeds college of music, when I did the Ba hons jazz studies, I was so surprised he used a tele not a jazz box. He got a fantastic jazz tone.
Fantastic video for an amazing instrument. Was half expecting Zack to sneak in a “drink” after saying “when I was working at Carter’s”. And Matt’s workstation is fast becoming one of my favorite places I’ve never been to. Although no seagull cries this time… Congrats Dan on your brilliant guitar!
Picked up a 2017 NAMM Fender Custom Shop ‘59 Telecaster with matching hand-wired Fender CS Champ both in relic Olympic white. I went on a tele saddle journey, purchased around 12 different brands, metals, and types- Dan kindly shared the details about KTS in a Monday stream. The KTS saddles will never leave my tele. Apparently the KTS saddles were a commission build for a builder in Texas.I believe KTS is not longer making them tho.
I am so happy that you finally got the guitar you lost sleep over, it turned out amazing ! The only way I would ever own a classic guitar like that is if it was "players grade". I couldn't imagine owning any guitar I was afraid to play. Your repairs & mods really brought it to life. I love the fact you got it and made it your own.
This whole video is incredibly informative, but the single moment that blew me the most was "harlf a turn on the treble side & quarter of a turn on the bass". Not only that Matt knew exactly what was required, but also how much of a difference it made! Phenomenal!!
I'm so glad the camera captured the moment you realized that, due to the aged electronics, the guitar is even better than you thought. Congrats, Dan. Keep on rocking.
This hits home. I turn 50 in 2024 and I've always wanted a 1974 Tele to mark it. Sometimes I think 'old guitar, old guitar problems.' So then I think maybe I can get a new Custom Shop made in 2024 to begin with it at 50. That could be cool. I wouldn't be precious about either - I'd be playing it! - but I go back and forth between A) a guitar from my birth year and B) a guitar from my 50th year. Watching this video helped me see that a player-grade '74 could be helped along. Love that '65 Dan!
Good luck. I went down the north year rabbit hole and it’s not pretty. Landed on a CS relic’d strat. Reliable, the spec I wanted and no work to make it great. Then again my year is 82’… even those we’re getting a bit pricey even if not in decent shape.
@@joshuaenos9001 Thanks Joshua! Good to know you went CS, I might too. I love relic'd Fenders (I have a Vintera road worn Strat in nitro'd surf green, so lovely). Come to think of it, maybe that's all I need lol. You're right about the pricing. These days of high costs, with two kids and a mortgage, all of this is a little silly, but I still believe that when I get there the answer will present itself! I live a long way from a city with reliable guitar shops, so it'll be a dedicated trip at the time.
I do love a found my dream guitar story, the bit where they go it's perfect apart from it needs new frets, pick ups, electronics etc etc, like triggers old broom lol
One of the first mods I did to my first electric was to swap out the MIM pickups for some $$$ ones. While it made a big difference it wasn’t as much as I was expecting. When I swapped out the wiring harness (for all the same values but better quality) I could suddenly hear the pickups as they were intended and all that difference was there in spades. A wiring harness is a massive change for not too a huge amount of money.
I've got a 72 strat that has been refinished that one time had a floyd but had been put back to vintage trem and upgraded locking tuners and SS frets and a bone nut and I only paid $1800 for it and it's my very best strat of all time.
Loved every moment of this Dan...watching you two over the years is now like watching two buddies of mine who have finally got their dream guitars.....so well deserved and I couldn't be happier for you...the Tele sounds immense...health to enjoy it and thanks.
Great input from Zach when it comes to buying vintage gear, and what affects the value. He also highlights something that's important with a "player's grade" guitar: you can play it! My dad has '59 Les Paul Junior that's player's grade: holes drilled for a different bridge, tuners has been changed to Grovers, finish has some wear from playing. It meant he picked up in 2009 for less than a Gibson Custom Shop one - and it's a guitar he and I play a lot, including at gigs. And it's worth it, because it's probably the best guitar I've ever played! Also, that '65 is beautiful! So fun to follow on your journey to make it yours!
I got to see Porcupine Tree live in Dallas two weeks ago, SW plays a tele and that bark just imprinted in my mind. Loved when he would play his PRS but he changes when he plays that tele.
Dan. So pleased for you! You had in mind what you wanted, and with the help of Mystic Matt you've been able to realise your dream. Matt has a truly special gift. It was great how from just hearing the sound of the guitar and you telling him how you wanted it to sound he could immediately identify what was going to bring about that change. It was great seeing the pure enjoyment in Dan's face as he responded to this newly found sound. I have Monty's PAFs in my Les Paul and SG and they were a fantastic upgrade on the stock Gibson Burstbuckers. After seeing what the upgrade in wiring loom did to the sound of your Tele I'm tempted to do a retro fit on all of my guitars.
I have a friend who has a 63 Tele he bought new when in High School. He meet Les Paul a long time and Les asked what his guitar was. He said I brought my 63 Tele and Les said bring it in I will fix it. He took a straight screw driver and a hammer and banged on the brass saddles. Then Les re-intonated the guitar and handed it back to him. Scotty said it worked a ton better after that. :) I have had a bunch of vintage and man they require too much work for me. Have a Peto T type, Schneider Silver Wire Bridge Pickup (SD) Esquire, Dennis Fano built Psonicsphere (semi hollow 6lbs) and love each one of them. I like the brass saddles by Callahan. I sent you some ToneCaps from VCap a while back. The tone cap makes huge difference. But both tone cap and pots will make a huge difference. Dan remember the cap will change over 40 hours of use and then again after 200 hours. It's a ton of time but maybe worth waiting on making more changes. Don't solder to the back of POTS. Why this happened years ago??? it's soft carbon and it requires 900 degrees and that kills the pots. So your not potting the neck pickup? Watch the feedback! Great show thanks Gordon
Fantastic video! The one thing that I’ve heard that CBS changed first was to replace hand winding with machine winding. They seemed to want to up production volumes as a priority. I bet that nothing changed until later in ‘65 though
Watching the interaction between you and the luthier was life-changing. Musicians talking and it translates to technical expertise and craftsmanship that most people can't even understand. Fantastic
@@Montysguitarsandpickups Thanks for the info! It’s my favourite wonky guitar at the moment (after 30 years of playing Jazzmaster), owning one Gibson and one I built myself. :)
That was deeply therapeutic! All the best to you, Dan! No one deserves this kind of blessing more!! 🙏 Now if only we could all have a "pocket" Matt Gleeson! 😁
Wow wow WOW!! Absolutely loved that Dan. The difference after Matt rewound that neck pickup was just brilliant. The changes you made have really brought that guitar back to life. Congratulations, and thank you for sharing.
Hey Dan! Since you're having fun experimenting with your Tele's you should try the "reverse control plate" on one of them, the Custom Shop is doing this on some of their new Winter Masterbuilt Collection. Read the Reverb article about it by Joel Handley. It goes Volume, Tone, Selector Switch instead of Selector, Volume, Tone and makes it so much easier for pinky volume swells and the selector will never get in your way! Beauty Guitar and great video, been waiting for this for a long time!
disconnect neck from tone pot is a GEM of a mod...do it to all my Tele's...even my CS and LSL sound better....I have Ask Zach to thank. It even brightens nicely...the middle position. Great video here!
That’s got to be the best sounding telecaster I’ve ever heard. Just proves that the telecaster in the right hands can do just about anything you’d ever want to do on guitar. It’s minimalistic function over form design at it’s finest. It’s a beautiful tool when you get right down to it and tools are meant to be used. I’d rather have a player’s grade guitar over any mint vaulted like new collector instrument because of the stories that played and well loved instrument could tell if it could talk and maybe it can whenever you play one. There’s something about the mojo of an old guitar that’s been played in that really makes you play it different than a new guitar. One of the best guitars I’ve ever played was a 70 something LP deluxe gold top of a friend’s, it was crusty and green from honest play. He thought about having it restored to like new when he took it to Nashville to have it re-fretted I told him he was crazy it had earned all of its scars and wrinkles and it’d be crazy to put it back like new. The people at Gibson in Nashville agreed with me. He told me that they almost refused to do restore it when he mentioned it, of course they would’ve but he wasn’t sure until they made such a big fuss over how cool his guitar was. He said whenever they opened the case they people started to come from all over the shop to check out his old gold top . I had a chance to play a 59 burst that was of course way more valuable than the deluxe my buddy had. I wasn’t impressed by the 59 but that old deluxe had it all.
Great episode! You might not realize this, Dan, but although you may have bought a Player's guitar, you now have yourself a Collector's guitar... because it was owned and played by the one and only Daniel Steinhardt. True story.
That is now an absolutely AMAZING, Tele! 😮 thought it was a great guitar before, but you absolutely improved it. It looks like a’66 Tele I once owned, though way cleaner. That guitar for me was one the best sounding, but I never really liked the thin neck profile? Thought about going down the MOD road, but sold it to pay for an operation. So happy you have this guitar! It really does sound incredible. Love seeing Monty’s on your show! He is an amazing resource, and knows his shit!
Stunning stuff, what a difference, that neck pup really nails it Thankyou you’ve inspired me to continue with me Tele copy mod with Bareknuckle Mule & Mississippi Queen (neck) Premanand 11.15 8.8.24
This was fascinating, Dan. Each detail. Brilliant friends to help you, too. Your joy is palpable, even over the interwebs. Which is also to say you share it well. Cheers, mate.
What a great journey. Thanks for having us along for the experience. Each change made a difference but i think, in this context, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I can see how these physical changes to the Tele have emotional impact on Dan and he plays more freely/expressive when he's not wrestling with the guitar trying to coax "the sound" out of the guitar. Another great example of how feeling it is as important as hearing it. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that......certain je ne sais quoi. Great Episode, Thanks!
Sort of unrelated to the video, but I was really excited so I couldn’t help sharing. I just got a Fender Vintera Road worn 60s spec Stratocaster in fire mist gold to boot. It’s not quite as nice as yours Mick, but we match!

Great video. I’m a big fan of Matt’s work on video. I wish I knew a guitar tech with his skills. Keep up the great work to you all.
Lovely, Dan. Great to watch the journey of this guitar.
Fantastic
I loved this video. Teleporn. Congrats on a beautiful guitar.
you know the tone's good when it sounds great even out of tune! bravo :)
Love the Tele, but man, that non-reverse Firebird on the wall at Montys!! ❤
it's a gooden' made by providence guitars.
@@Montysguitarsandpickups Thanks for the info! It’s my favourite wonky guitar at the moment (after 30 years of playing Jazzmaster), owning one Gibson and one I built myself. :)
Words fail to express how much I appreciate you guys. So far all I have is, "Porridge is your gut's broom." But that seems a bit wide of the mark.
This is a fantastic episode. Bravo! Super sweet Tele, enjoy it Dan.
Great video Dan. Nice to see how you made your axe shine even more.
To me it feels like we'll be seeing Yellow a lot more in the future TPS episodes :) Boy oh boy those Monty's electronics + cap made a difference!
disconnect neck from tone pot is a GEM of a mod...do it to all my Tele's...even my CS and LSL sound better....I have Ask Zach to thank.
True story.
Hahahah 🤗
Matt is magician. Gotta love his approach and experience.
Stunning stuff, what a difference, that neck pup really nails it Thankyou you’ve inspired me to continue with me Tele copy mod with Bareknuckle Mule & Mississippi Queen (neck)

Really loved watching this. Every change/upgrade seemed to take the guitar to the next level! Well done!
What a superb job Matt did on that neck pickup rewind! Beautiful tone :)
Joyous Dan, absolutely Joyous!
This was fascinating, Dan. Each detail. Brilliant friends to help you, too. Your joy is palpable, even over the interwebs. Which is also to say you share it well. Cheers, mate.
Great show Dan. Tasteful licks throughout and what a wealth of knowledge to know what to do to tweek!
Thanks for turning this into a great educational video, the inspired playing at the end was such a selling point.
