I had surgery and ordered a Squier Bullet Telecaster to enjoy in recovery. It was delivered the day I was re-admitted into hospital with an infection. Today is the day I get to go home and see my family and also unbox my new Tele. This is the perfect episode to watch while I wait for my last dose of antibiotica before they let me go.
Thanks for the well wishes, means alot. I have unboxed it, IT'S A TELECASTER! £139 in white with maple neck and black gaurd. It's amazing what you can get for the money these days. Can recommend to anyone who wants a wallet friendly guitar.
I firmly believe that having less choices most often leads to more creativity. Too many choices leads to overthinking things and not getting on with it. Hence, the perfection of this instrument, in my book.
I agree, for a while I chased pedals and guitars with as many knobs and features as possible and usually would end up just constantly changing shit around because it all sounded good but I couldn't decide which setting sounded BEST lol so it was paralyzing. Now I'm much happier with an esquire and phasing out the overly complicated pedals and doing more actual playing
Having more choices is okay as long as you understand these choices. A tone stack in a preamp section helps a lot as long as you understand the end sound. I wouldn't call a Telecaster "perfection" because there are obvious things that it cannot do. That said, I have been gravitating towards playing a Telecaster more and more because it's so simple and predictable. You work with the guitar more instead of trying to force the guitar to work for you.
Dan, your jam at the end was stunning. I loved everything about this episode. And every episode. Since my divorce 5 years ago, I dove Back into guitar. I am so analytical that I need to know how everything works and why. You and mick have taught me so much over the last few years. I can’t even begin to say thank you enough. You both have gotten me through such hard times and I now look at both of you as my own brothers. Thank you so much. And God bless you both :)
IMO Butters is the best guitar in your collection. The bridge is perfectly bright without being brittle and the neck is dark, woody with lots of depth without being muddy. If I came across that guitar, i would not leave without it. Thank god you guys are across the pond!
LOVE this show!! I am the telecaster nutter called TeleCathster! I love teles and my name is Cath aka Catherine. You guys have often commented on my sign on name for when I’ve super chatted so thought I’d finally explain and this was the perfect episode! Thanks for all your expertise on answering my questions on live Q&A! I have 15 teles in all pickup configurations and different woods with some being custom made by local luthier. The best guitar that does everything! Keep safe lads!
Loved this episode just as much as the Strat episode. I can relate after having been a Strat player for most of my life and suddenly trying out a Tele that literally BLEW MY MIND! My Tele is now my #1 guitar and I play it about 90% of the time. My Strat is now my backup guitar. Teles friggin' ROCK!
@@pb25193 nope. I usually play every song with the same guitar. It makes no difference if I take a Strat or a Tele. But the Tele inspires me more than the Strat does. It's exciting and super simple.
I honestly can’t tell them apart… although I love telecasters and love watching countless guitar videos. I’m beginning to realize that most of the time we are just knit picking at sounds, when really there isn’t much difference at all! Just good sounding telecasters
I think a lot of times what ppl attribute to sound is usually more about how it feels to play/how the pickups play. A tele is supposed to sound like a tele so theyre all gonna sound the same more or less
There's a reason why Greg Koch designed his fishman fluence pickups to be voiced "50s" and "60s". "A tele is going to sound like a tele" is valid when you're comparing a tele with other guitars. But in this case, I wasn't.@@ThruThaRoofComedy
The passion you demonstrate for your favorite red Tele is by far the greatest audible difference heard in this comparison. A brilliant guitar with a heavy dose of musical spirit. Almost brought a tear to this old mans eye. Thank you both for your dedication to this instrument.
Those pedal steel intro licks by Dan were totally on point. As we'd expect. To segue that immediately into the Tele as a rock tool shows why it's so popular. Hucking Fell the outro riffage was mighty. Red is truly something else.
Just wanted to say, Dan’s red tele (and Pete’s purple one….. and Greg K’s red over white one…) gave me so much ‘gas’ 4 years ago…. So I bought a used post modern custom shop from Anderson’s in 2017. I’ve done 90+ gigs with since then. It really does do everything but more importantly it’s the only guitar I own that I truly connect with. It puts out exactly what I put in. Thanks TPS for helping me find me.
That direct, no hiding sound is definitely what gets me. The Roy Buchanan blowing minds and never really needing to sing bc the guitar’s doing all the talking thing… so good
I was in a rock band with three guitarists. All telecasters, all different with a distinct sound. A 2000’s American standard which was warm and clear, a 70’s with maple neck which was brash and spanky, and an ASAT custom classic which was smooth and right in the middle. It’s an amazing guitar and perfect for so many situations.
I’m a metal head and recently finally admitted to myself at the age of 49 that a Tele with 9.5 radius is my favorite guitar. Teles can absolutely rock and it does metal with the right pickups. That fretboard radius (9.5) allows me to play big chords that ring out and you can bend notes straight up the board without choking out the note. I’ve got an American Pro II with SD Hot Rails and it’ll spank any super strat w/EMGs. And yes, it’s still a Tele with Hot Rails although a straight up vintage Tele on hand is always a must. But in the end we know that 90% of that time resides in your fingers! But still…A Tele rocks. Great episode 🤘🏻
Dan has been putting in some time, eh? Good to see something else positive coming out of these past couple of months/years. The improvement is very noticeable!! And Dan was already a fantastic player! This is another level.
17 minutes in. My favorite part of this video so far is Mick’s enthusiasm in making the guitar exchanges; as though he can’t wait to hear the next one. Cheers from the Big Apple.
I'm sure I am missing a few, but here are the Telecaster Jazz musicians that jump to mind: Mike Stern, Howard Roberts, Ted Greene, Danny Gatton, Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, and believe it or not, lately a bit of John Scofield too. This was a great episode!
Been playing epiphones for about 20 years, my current squeeze was a 56 les Paul pro but I couldn't get on with the thick neck despite the great sound. Decided to try a Harley Benton so I bought the 62 custom vintage series. I'd compare it to a classic vibe. I've really fallen in love with this Tele, I can't believe I ignored these guitar's for so long. The sweetest part is it only cost me £141. I know people knock these guitar's but I'm not ashamed to own a fantastic telecaster with a Harley headstock.
Re: the pickups in Dan's red 63 CS Tele - you can call Fender customer support with the serial # and they'll email you a spec sheet. Based on the beveled magnets and stagger, it's likely what used to be referred to as "Custom 60s Tele" pickups in the early to mid 2000s and have since been tweaked/renamed as the "63 Telecaster Pickups." Both have approx 6.6k resistance and Alnico 2 magnets. Dan "may" be thinking of the neck DCR 7.4k-ish when he's quoting the DCR in the video. The bridge and neck pickup in a Tele use different gauge wire hence the non-intuitive DCR readings (neck higher than bridge). Either way, I have a 2005 CS 1960 Tele Custom with a similar pickup and it is indeed fantastic. 🤟
"Butters" every day of the week for me! Ted Greene, Tim Lerch, Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Jim Campilongo.... I'm a big fan of the 4-way switch also on my black guard.
First electric guitar I ever played was a Fender Tele a friend of mine's dad had in his house. I went out and bought myself a blue Squier Tele straight away. It was my first guitar. I've had numerous guitars ever since but nothing beats a Tele. 10 years on, it's still the GOAT.
That Bare Knuckle in the Standard sounds killer. I’ve never had a proper Tele as all my guitar heroes from my youth played Les Pauls, Super Strats and Explorers. But I suppose it’s high time to get a Tele at 51 years old.
check out G&L ASAT models. I love how they improved on the original tele 3 saddle bridge with a 6 saddle one that still retains the "ashtray" design of the original bridge.
I don't know about that 'life is too short for long youtube videos' bit, but this nearly 56 minute vid is worth every second. I'm not sure I've watched a guitar video - tele or not - that inspired this beginner guitar hack to go get a Tele as much as this 'experience'. Wow. The issue I have though is where to begin, but I really think the answer lies somewhere close to just getting off my rump, getting a basic, but good Tele, and playing. Just playing. I'm inspired, I kid you not. I mean, F me. I feel like I've wasted decades trying to put my finger on 'what was missing in life'. And what this is - is the sound of this music, like soulful tears pouring into your chest. I have chills. There's a Jason Isbell tele for sale near me. I'm making a phone call...
Worth noting that Jack Pearson uses Squire Bullets (teles and strats) as well as high end guitars and he sounds great on either end of the price scale (it’s all in the fingers). Great show as always guys!
Dan’s playing is off the charts in this episode, my lord! I don’t know about general consensus, but TPS+Dan+Red did a total 180 in my understanding of Teles. Yes, Teles are cool. I even had a Tele custom made for me BECAUSE of Dan and Red, and it’s my number 1 since.
ah!! Yes!!!one of life's small pleasures!! an hour of Tele talk with two of my most favourite guys on a Friday night. I think the backyard patio was most definitely made for nights like this! Can't wait to dig in with a frosty beverage. Thanks starting the weekend off right Gents!!
Let’s not forget just how many configurations a tele can come in. Tele Custom, Thineline, the Carbonita, humbucker in the neck etc. You could play nothing but tele shaped items and end up with a room full of guitars. ***Side note, you should have a show where you reunite Dan with the thin line that Paul Davids snatched out of Dan’s hands.
Great show, guys! And awesome to hear the Tim Lerch shoutout! I got my first tele this past November, a pine pro-2 in sienna burst, because I wanted something for jazz fingerstyle that would be really versatile. The neck pickup for jazz is just stellar (I usually play it through my 76 champ with an alnico Jensen speaker). Lerch was one of the people who convinced me on that front, and in that video he wasn’t even using the Charlie Christian pickups. But speaking of versatility: I was astounded by how much I liked bridge pickup - killer for rock and even metal (I’m also a metal guy, and I run my tele through a Kraken 50 head and love it).
And if you upgrade the tuners and pickups, you have closed 75% of the gap. Swapping the electronics too, probably closes 90-95% of the gap. Definitely diminishing returns after that!
@@CraigsWorkshop I own two early Squire classic vipes telecasters made in China. Both very proper produced. Only changed pu with a bit more bite on one of the guitars, that' s all I had to improve. Of course you can argue a good Fender custom shop has this little" I can' t tell what it is" extra but it' s not worth enough to pay thousends more quids for it.
Show idea: That Pedal Order Show. Short shows that just focus on two effects and how they interact with each other, order, tone, impedance, single coil vs humbuckers, other considerations. Some are, I think, well covered like fuzz and wah, or fuzz and drive, but phaser/fuzz, flanger/distortion, chorus/drive, and on and on. Might be able to make them 5-10 minutes each. Then you could make a playlist of them and have them be a pedal order reference you can always point to in the future.
Love this idea! Will our attention span? Switching pedal order, I generally settle on what works for what I am trying to accomplish at that moment and then decide that’s how it should be forever. Sounds like a great chance for Dan to ever so humbly pitch switchers for small pedalboards!
My wife bought me a Tele ten years ago and, much like said wife, I love the Tele more every day. Every day I'm home, I pick it up. I've changed pickups, pots, tuners, the bridge to three saddles (uncompensated). It's what I would grab in case of fire.
I’ve been using a Tele in many “rock” settings over the last few years (psych/stoner rock, post punk and alt rock) and have gotten so many compliments about how good it often sounds. It’s my fav guitar, and still the best sounding guitar I own. Also, if anyone says Teles can’t rock, send em a live video of RATM playing Killing in the name, and ask them again.
I watch all of your videos. I’ve purchased the ‘all you need is fuzz’ t-shirt (2 of them). BUT, all that screechy metallic bridge pickup playin’ makes me love my Strat, Les Paul and PRS so much more. You’ve saved me from the brink. Buyer’s remorse was on the horizon. Thank you a million times over.
I'm not a huge fan of teles and am definitely more of a strat guy but Dan's enthusiasm and excitement when talking about or playing teles is infectious! This video put a smile on my face and made me want a tele! 😀 Great content as always!
I just want everybody here to know that I'm from the Nashville aria and this opening was stellar! Stunning! Hats off to Dan. I'm always impressed with the playing here but you two always outdo yourselves.
Dan's playing was off the scale good in the play out at the end. Great video guys. I'm a strat guy that owns a Tele thanks to this channel and it's a great guitar so thanks.
It's crazy how your tastes change with age. When I first started playing at around age 13, it was all about "cool" looking guitars that I could show off to my friends like Jackson flying Vs, and ESPs for shredding. When I turned about 17 I began to become obsessed with Les Paul's but couldn't afford a Gibson so I went with Epiphones and Chibsons that looked exactly like the real deal (but didn't sound like it lol) at 23 I'm now liking a more balanced and dynamic sound so I now play a Strat, a Tele, and an acoustic as my main Axes.
Yep. It's not unusual to change horses as you progress in your musical journey. It will be interesting to see what you'll be playing in 25-30 years. Wouldn't surprise me if it turns out to be..(ta-da!), a Tele! Been there myself and still doing that.
Funnily enough that's exactly the progress I've gone through by now! Exactly as in it even was an Epiphone and Chibson at the LP Stage! Used to hate Teles but as you said, the amount of dynamics and expression in singlecoils along with their simple design just makes them sing (to my ear at least)!
Love me a good Tele! I've got 3. An American Special with Texas Specials, a Noventa with a P90, and a Suhr Alt T with humbuckers. All sound and play great!!
Been playing a G&L ASAT as my main for about 6 years now. Absolutely love that guitar and the MFD pickups (mine has the small/tele sized ones). Took some time to grow into them, but once I properly started relying on my volume/tone controls… wow they cover so much ground.
Oh man, not only did you cover all things Tele, the sheer JOY on Dan's face as he RIPPED awesomeness and Mick's huge smile as he did so was just wonderful!!! What a great way to end my miserable week! Thanks gents!
I just have to say, out of all the guitar enthusiast channels I’ve come across and subscribed to (and I’ve watched a lot), I can legitimately say yours is top of the list for me. I continue to come back and check in with you guys, really enjoy your content/feedback and walk away with new perspective each time I watch one of your videos. Unbiased, clearly very experienced and directionally accurate reviews. You guys are awesome! Thank you and cheers from Virginia, keep up the great work!
I've been using an G&L ASAT Special since the '90s and love it so much. Yet another Leo Fender-designed masterpiece. Love the fat MFD single coils. And the bridge is such a huge design improvement.
I would love to see a video about Tele PU combination. 1. 2 Charlie Christians 2. P90 in the neckposition and Tele bridge PU 3. Neckhumbucker 4. Coodercaster Tele variation
Even with the RUclips compression that red Tele just stands out. Some of the others were great too. I would just choose the red one for the sound. As far as looks go I like traditional black guard butterscotch teles with maple boards or red or burst teles with rosewood.
Dan is right about the particular few components being important in the Tele design. Saddles, Pickup & Bridge plate like he said.. I reckon the thin ashtray vintage ones have an extra charm too. Even though it's been celebrated frequently it begs repeating, that red tele really is something special.. What a gem. The frequency output seems to be balanced in just the right way to produce such a pleasing tone. The other ones demonstrated are quite different aren't they?.. I find that so fascinating. Thanks guys for a great companion piece to the Strat show a while back. You two really manage to illuminate the points you make here and also illustrate things so well which is a testament to the natural skills and pure energy you two possess as people. Always a fun & educational watch, and as jaded as I can be, I always find something humbling to appreciate in these shows. Thanks for the years of service/duty guys. Lots of love :)
Great episode! The best tip for a Tele is indeed as you say to set your amp to give you a nice neck pickup tone, but then when you switch to the bridge pickup just roll back the tone control a bit so it takes some off the treble off. That purple Squier sounded really good too, held its own again some really expensive guitars.
funny seeing how the squier performs, kind of goes back to what Josh Smith says, "I'd rather have a sh*tty guitar through a killer amp with my pedals than the other way around." The quality of the guitar is often for the player above all else which consequently often results in a better performance but the medium of delivery, amp and pedals, typically make the largest sonic impact. So I agree with Josh, in a gig situation ill take the great amp (s) all day
I saw the purple Bullet and the Affinity. Would really love to put my 2020 CV 50s in Dan's hands to see what he thinks. I love the sound of those pickups even though they're more like 4.6K resistance. Surprised no mention of adding a 4-way switch option to get the pickups in series...
It's kind of absurd how good they've gotten. Squier and G&L Tribute are the best ways to dip your toe in the water for any classic Fender design. I also love the fact that they've been given the freedom to go crazy with new designs lately.
In the late 60's, I watched Rock bands and most of the guitar players were playing Teles. They were perceived as a Rock guitar and Strats were used for Country. Not until Jimmi & Stevie did things switch around.
There in the hat! That's Mr smile, everytime he hits the note just right, he can't hide his smile. He certainly doesn't need to hide anything, at 72, playing since eight, would give my Honda to meet these guys who drip with talent, but act normal. That alone, gets my respect.
I saw The Who in 1981 the It's Hard Tour. Pete played all Tele's. Schecter parts put together by his team.. He had 2 cases with 8 drawers each and they were filled with the Schecter's. Pete banged out an incredible set to a roaring audience.
Watching this waiting for my first tele in the mail tomorrow! Definitely on the lower end lol a bullet but I'm excited all the same Beautiful show guys
Sort of stumbled into the tele world as well, as a 13 year old. Did a bunch of work for the folks and went down to the big guitar shop in the area and saw the 83 stratocaster and all the unsavory mods and settled on a 83 marble telecaster. Thus beginning a life long journey. Swapped out the bridge pup for a early hot rails during my metal days. Got my strats, kramers, Floyd roses. But always go back to the tele. Now I build parts casters. Seem to have gravitated towards a 59ish type tele. ash body and a slab board rosewood neck with more modern features. Compound radius, tall narrow frets, 6 saddle brass bridges. The cats meow for me. Essentially a tele. Something very simplistic, direct and pure about it. Sensitive would probably be a good word. it just responds to everything in a way the others don't. Thinlines are very cool, too. Teles are unbelievably modifiable. There are so many combinations of tone woods, solid , semi hollow, pickups, neck profiles, hardware, and electronics. The main connection points; bridge, frets, and nut. Start messing with any of that, stainless, nickel, brass, tusk, bone and it is going to affect the tone. Same with the tone woods, ash, alder, maple, rosewood, even mahogany. Humbuckers, p 90s, singles, vintage output hot wound. It is just such a simple direct design that every little thing has an profound effect on it. Just a matter of experimenting and dialing in your sound.
I imagine that Teles will be flying off the shelves this weekend! I have a Baja Tele (twisted tele neck and broadcaster bridge pickups are stock). I took out the rubbish S1 switch and disconnected the tone from the neck pickup. It has a soft V neck that is my standard for judging all necks. I will never part with this guitar. It might not be as good as Red or Butters, but it is good enough for me. Through my home-made 5e3 it sounds great. Thanks for doing a Tele show. In my opinion, it is the best guitar available. Leo Fender nailed it.
@@billgreen3629 The only thing I would think about changing on my butterscotch blonde baja is the thick poly finish. With a thin nitro finish, it would be awesome. I'm sure I'll never do it though. I love it as is. I did replace the plastic pickguard with a nice bakelite one. But that's minor.
The Telecaster rabbit hole is probably the second deepest after the Stratocaster. This video barely touches the arcane lore of great Tele sounds... Yet they all sounded great. The lesson maybe that we can tweak to our heart's content because the basis is so good to begin with!
@Ed I must admit that I have two strats, one I never use live and the other has a JB humbucker (full size) in the bridge pick up and a custom wound P90 in the neck, with the std strat pick up in the middle.
Wow fascinating stuff gentlemen! I own two LP’s, a 335, a Brian May, and on the Fender front a Strat, a Jazz bass and a Tele. If I had to keep only one? That’s a no brainer. All day long that would be my 2012 standard Tele which introduced the Strat style rear bevel at the top of the body. No other guitar I’ve ever played comes close in feel and playability to this 2 tone sunburst gem of a Tele. The young salesman in the store confessed that he’d had his eye on this; I’ve since concluded that he probably set it up himself as I’ve never had any inclination to change anything. If it ain’t broke… Dan’s look of obvious joy with a Tele in hand, particularly Red, looks just like the way mine makes me feel.
Dan really ‘Cut the Cake’ this episode (pun intended). As a non-tele player this was fascinating! Great episode and the outro, well no more needs to be said. Spectacular!
@@ThatPedalShowUpdate I’ve now bought a Tele. And it’s AWESOME! It does everything, and it sounds like me and only me. I didn’t get the Tele thing before, but now I get it. I haven’t picked up my Les Paul or Strat since getting it
One of my favorite episodes you have ever done. Of course, I’m biased as I own 7 teles….I especially appreciate that you tried affordable teles as well
I’ve never misunderstood the neck pickup on a tele. It’s my favorite sound out of my favorite guitar. Sam Prekop from The Sea and Cake deserves mention as a fantastic Tele player.
I had the same thing, never played a Tele until I did. Since then I've loved the things. For the same reasons, they're simple but do just about everything you want them to. And when you think the Tele was the first electric guitar Fender put out all those years ago. Yet they still take some beating.
Would have liked some more chat on the different T guitars and what they do differently and how they iterate on the original Tele design. Particularly that ASAT!
@@ThatPedalShow If you find the time, I'm sure everyone would love it. Either way, it's always a delight to watch you guys on here, regardless of the content. Really appeciate it. Cheers
Dan, Dan, DAN!!! You absolutely killed it on the intro playing, running the gamut from sweet and tasty to sultry and brutal. I am late to the Tele party, but I got my first recently -- just a MIM Special Edition, but it sounds beautiful, and I am totally hooked. I'm sure there will be others to come...
@@benashton3691 Well, yes, absolutely, I wouldn't doubt it. The MIM guitars are fantastic, at least as good as any American (non-custom shop) Telecaster. I guess my intent wasn't clear - the "just" was meant to emphasize how great the guitar is at a comparative price point far lower than its American Counterparts. I love my Tele - best sounding and playing guitar I own (and I have Les Pauls and quite a few other premium guitars). Just picked up a Strat Player Plus MIM, too, and it's amazing.
Very enjoyable as usual. Dan is certainly a Telemaster! His unbridled joy comes through and it’s really great to see. I also liked that you covered a range from obscenely expensive to really very affordable and Dan’s daughter’s Squier proved it is a great framework with just a pickup change. Be well my friends!
It really does sound so good.. No matter whether watching on a tv or a nice stereo..that balanced tone always seem to be apparent. And yeah maybe fender should just make a bunch of exact replicas.. Steel saddles!!
First gig tomorrow night since the pandemic. My current band is very well suited to the tele sound and aesthetic, I switch to a humbucker guitar for the 2nd set. Being a strat guy, I missed the strat sound. Obvious as it sounds, a strat pickup in the neck of a tele has been a revelation. Can you guys try it (Dan's daughters squire?). Might make for a great show. Pickups in guitars not associated with them and like the D&M drive...tele with a strat pickup in the neck. Happy happy compromise.
Watching this episode again because i'm just about to purchase a 60's classic vibe (double bound). The edit when Dan is reminiscing on the Tele Plus is gold haha
Am I the only one who thinks, that the middle position on a Tele is the perfect setting for just strumming some (open) chords into an amp, that‘s just on the edge of breaking up? Great show, great insights - as always. Cheers!
Damn that was beautiful! I became Tele fan in the 90's too, when first learned about electric guitars' history. Read books and magazines and stuff. That ugly duckling turned into a beaty when stared those simple lines long enough. Friends were real guitarists and strat / superstrat players, I was just a dreamer. It took until 20th century though, until got my first own Telecaster. If Strat is a Spitfire,Tele is a Hurricane. Simpler machine for brave men & women.
That country playing from Dan is absolutely incredible. I didn't realise how well teles took to distortion either can easily hold up with humbuckers (although the hum is pretty bad when not playing). This is making me lean more towards the squier paranormal offset tele than the super sonic. I just can't stand glossy fretboards and lots of teles I want that are otherwise good have them
I also hate them. I somehow ended up with several though. You can knock that shit off quick and easy with steel wool. I read about it everywhere and then just did it to my classic vibe neck this weekend as a practice run for a new 72 reissue I want to do next
After playing a Strat first and a gibson nighthawk later, I bought a used tele about 15 years ago. That was a great moment. I've never needed another type of guitar ever since.
Got into Teles after seeing Julian Lage play and got obsessed. My Baja Tele is my favorite guitar. I always think about getting some custom t style, but then i think what's the need.
I just received my Tele Ultra in arctic white with the S1 switch and it sounds and plays awesome, and the new radius neck is a dreamy thing! Thank you both!
I find the Tele is a guitar that has it all tonewise and that its much easier to take away stuff about a tone you don't like than it is to add it in. This is what makes the Tele the best in my book.
Ugh. Infection. Glad you are still with us. Maybe I should get a Tele in this lifetime? 🤔
Hope you have a fast and full recovery, Dale!
Enjoy your new tele. I got a Squier contemporary, my first guitar, a couple of weeks back.
Get well soon, Dale!

As someone once said, “too much knowledge leads to confusion, too many guitar lessons leads to jazz fusion “.
I wholeheartedly agree
Having more choices is okay as long as you understand these choices. A tone stack in a preamp section helps a lot as long as you understand the end sound. I wouldn't call a Telecaster "perfection" because there are obvious things that it cannot do. That said, I have been gravitating towards playing a Telecaster more and more because it's so simple and predictable. TRUE.
No matter what guitar you put it against, RED always sounds 10 out of 10....
Finally someone brings up the topic of tone paint.
Growing up dreaming of a Black Beauty, Red is now basically the reason why I only really want a decent Tele and... That will just about do. Hahahaha
I think it goes up to 11, Red is a monster out this world.
Red guitars are the fastest.
Red is part of Dan by this point.
50:24 - Some of the finest playing I've heard Dan ever do. Some reminisce of one of my fav Tele players of all time Tim Bricheno from All About Eve 😎😀

Why? I have both and I just find them to be different, hard to see why one is better...
@@pb25193
I agree, I love them both, but I find myself using the Tele about 90% of the time because I am really connected to it.
@@joequintana5546 is it because of any particular song?
@@pb25193 nope.
I usually play every song with the same guitar. It makes no difference if I take a Strat or a Tele. But the Tele inspires me more than the Strat does. It's exciting and super simple.
@@pb25193 I played Strats almost exclusively for more than 25 years.
I honestly can’t tell them apart… although I love telecasters and love watching countless guitar videos. I’m beginning to realize that most of the time we are just knit picking at sounds, when really there isn’t much difference at all! Just good sounding telecasters
thats not true... red and butter are night and day.
@@keithchang8566they’re not though.
I think a lot of times what ppl attribute to sound is usually more about how it feels to play/how the pickups play. A tele is supposed to sound like a tele so theyre all gonna sound the same more or less
@@keithchang8566they are just different pickups dude
Cheers mate, yeah, Red has something unique going on, love that guitar
Just wanted to say, Dan’s red tele (and Pete’s purple one….. and Greg K’s red over white one…) gave me so much ‘gas’ 4 years ago…. So I bought a used post modern custom shop from Anderson’s in 2017. I’ve done 90+ gigs with since then. It really does do everything but more importantly it’s the only guitar I own that I truly connect with. It puts out exactly what I put in. Thanks TPS for helping me find me.
Waaaay cool Simon. Glad you’re digging it! Mick here.
@@ThatPedalShow Thanks Mick. I just looked back at some photos and it was early 2017 when I bought it. Where has the time gone!!?
I had the same thing happen with Micks strat blue . I spent a long long time getting one that made me feel like I did watching Mick play his blue
That direct, no hiding sound is definitely what gets me. The Roy Buchanan blowing minds and never really needing to sing bc the guitar’s doing all the talking thing… so good
Not to mention he almost always used just the guitar and amp! Insane versatility just by using attack and a couple of knobs.
Yeah man. Teles + metal = great metal. :0)
I enjoyed a mexi Tele more than my 89 Jackson hss, to me it had thicker chug !
Dan has been putting in some time, eh? Good to see something else positive coming out of these past couple of months/years. The improvement is very noticeable!! And Dan was already a fantastic player! This is another level.
Ah, cheers mate, having a go 🤓🙏
Those bends in the intro jam were intense!
Dan is just KILLING it!
@@ThatPedalShow Dan, you have been bowling me over with your skill for many a year. Hello from the land of oz.
Oof. That closing little jam on Red was fantastic. I wanna hear the rest of that album!
Cheers matey 🤓🙏
17 minutes in. My favorite part of this video so far is Mick’s enthusiasm in making the guitar exchanges; as though he can’t wait to hear the next one. Cheers from the Big Apple.
Yep! I’m a great guitar exchanger!
@@ThatPedalShow your huge smile through this was just fantastic!
Many feel the Tele neck pickup is the perfect marriage for Jazz!
Ed Bickert
That’s great info Matt, thanks so much!
@@ThatPedalShow cheers! 🍻 (this info comes from the Fender Custom Shop Design Guide and conversations I've had with customer service 👍 )
Punch the serial # in on the website and will give the exact build in most cases.
I prefer the butterscotch 50's custom shop tele. That one sounds amazing to me.
Pointing out Tim Lurch was an excellent call, such a wonderful player, can listen to him all day.
Less than 2 minutes and I'm clicking "thumbs up." Soul piercing intro.
That switch to neck pick-at 51:30 was absolutely beautiful tone. Could’ve listened to that the whole time
That Bare Knuckle in the Standard sounds killer.
The standard with nice electronics really did stand out!
Ah, cheers Andre 🤓👍
Agreed, that thinline is astonishing
Any guitar can come in any configuration if you have enough $
Don't forget the Tele Deluxe! :)
Love my dual filtertron cabronita.
You just described my collection😄
I love love love Teles. Throughout my playing life I’ve loved squeezing every sound imaginable out of such a simple guitar.
Red is a BEAST!!!!! I have this open in another window while getting work done, and everytime I'm distracted by an AMAZING guitar tone, it's Red.
Although you can tell the difference between the Squire and Fender, it is amazing how technology has improved cheap guitars.
Excellent idea
That was Dan's "make a grown man cry" playing moment. Wow, amazingly good! 😭
I play guitar since 27 years and I always played a Strat but today I bought a vintera Tele 60s and it's amazing. I love it!
Who the hell says teles can't rock? Have they ever heard about a little known band called led zeppelin? 😂
Telecasters are the hardest rocking Fenders. The people that harp on about teles being for country or whatever are nerds.
Please bring back the Pick n' Mix series. Those were so satisfactory to watch.
I'm with you. I would much rather watch a pick 'n mix than a 2-3 hour q&a.
I'm always impressed with the playing here but you two always outdo yourselves.
....and the outro proves me right.
The acting delivery of Dan's first spoken line here puts Sir Laurence Olivier to shame.
I couldn't understand what he said before "Dan here".
Dan's playing was off the scale good in the play out at the end. Great video guys. I'm a strat guy that owns a Tele thanks to this channel and it's a great guitar so thanks.
Thanks Darren 🤓🙏
@@bjjerrold433 So true lol. Goes to show there's no pleasing us humans 😁
@@Dapno_ That's crazy! Clearly we guitarists are cut from the same cloth
Love the look of pure joy on Dan's face when he revels playing a Tele..lol
Love me a good Tele! I've got 3. An American Special with Texas Specials, a Noventa with a P90, and a Suhr Alt T with humbuckers. All sound and play great!!
Before I started playing the Tele was the last guitar I pictured myself owning - Strats and Explorers were way cooler. Then I started playing!
Ha, read my comment. You express what I meant by my comment. You explain it better :-)
Cheers Wes, hope this week is better for you 👍
I just have to say, out of all the guitar enthusiast channels I’ve come across and subscribed to (and I’ve watched a lot), I can legitimately say yours is top of the list for me. I continue to come back and check in with you guys, really enjoy your content/feedback and walk away with new perspective each time I watch one of your videos. Unbiased, clearly very experienced and directionally accurate reviews. You guys are awesome! Thank you and cheers from Virginia, keep up the great work!
Thank you so much B, that’s very kind of you to say. Thanks for being part of the TPS family!
I will be team T-style til I die. also thrilled to see the G&L ASAT represented here, such a unique sound.
It's a MASSIVE tone when the volume is dimed, but when backed down to about 6 or 7 is more classic Tele. I ride the volume knob constantly.
I've been using an G&L ASAT Special since the '90s and love it so much. Yet another Leo Fender-designed masterpiece. Love the fat MFD single coils. And the bridge is such a huge design improvement.
Freaking love my ASAT Special
ASAT is a fabulous Tele!!! Leo Fenders best design
I would love to see a video about Tele PU combination.
1. 2 Charlie Christians
2. P90 in the neckposition and Tele bridge PU
3. Neckhumbucker
So I agree with Josh, in a gig situation ill take the great amp (s) all day
So very true
I saw the purple Bullet and the Affinity. Would really love to put my 2020 CV 50s in Dan's hands to see what he thinks. I love the sound of those pickups even though they're more like 4.6K resistance. Surprised no mention of adding a 4-way switch option to get the pickups in series...
Amp and pedals for the tone. Guitar for the feel.
That Squier doesn't sound half bad at all.
Jimmy Page used a Tele on first two Led Zeppelin albums!!! Also on the solo on Stairway to Heaven!
There in the hat! That's Mr smile, everytime he hits the note just right, he can't hide his smile. He certainly doesn't need to hide anything, at 72, playing since eight, would give my Honda to meet these guys who drip with talent, but act normal. That alone, gets my respect.
Bless you mate, thank you 🙏
I saw The Who in 1981 the It's Hard Tour. Pete played all Tele's. Schecter parts put together by his team.. He had 2 cases with 8 drawers each and they were filled with the Schecter's. Pete banged out an incredible set to a roaring audience.
I'm actually Tele shopping right now because of that Isbell model, perfect timing for this video, thanks!
Dan always looks like he's having the time of his life when he's playing Red.
I am 😆👍
Find someone that looks at you the way Dan look at Red :D
I don't blame him

Beautiful show guys
You guys have made over half a million people very happy by making this video. I"m one of them. Bravo and cheers!
Teles are the best. In my humble opinion. Love strats and Les Pauls too. But teles just take me there. A good tele
Jim Weider said it best when he said “if you don’t have a toothbrush and a telecaster you”re in trouble” great episode
That sounds perfect. I think I need to find one of those.
These past two episodes have been nothing short of outstanding. Truly wonderful. Thank you.
Thanks Michael 🤓👍
If it ain’t broke…
Dan’s look of obvious joy with a Tele in hand, particularly Red, looks just like the way mine makes me feel.
Always good to see an ASAT cameo. 👍
Dan really ‘Cut the Cake’ this episode (pun intended). As a non-tele player this was fascinating! Great episode and the outro, well no more needs to be said. Spectacular!
Cheers RDB 🤓🙏
@@ThatPedalShowUpdate I’ve now bought a Tele. And it’s AWESOME! It does everything, and it sounds like me and only me. I didn’t get the Tele thing before, but now I get it. I haven’t picked up my Les Paul or Strat since getting it
One of my favorite episodes you have ever done. Of course, I’m biased as I own 7 teles….I especially appreciate that you tried affordable teles as well
I like the double cut telly on your avatar👍🏼
And they really should have borrowed a thinline from Andertons just to show us the difference.
And a deluxe and a Nashville
That outro is mesmerizing. Still waiting for Dan's lesson on fancy chords, BTW...
Great episode, guys. Thanks for sharing.

There's no such thing as "just" an MIM. My Mexican tele has some serious growl, even without an amp.
I have a Fender American vintage '52 tele and it is mind blowing. So versatile and the range of sounds is massive.
Gee I love Tele’s . My old 1985 MIJ Tele with Kinman broadcaster pickups is my forever guitar. I love it
Very enjoyable as usual. Dan is certainly a Telemaster! His unbridled joy comes through and it’s really great to see. I also liked that you covered a range from obscenely expensive to really very affordable and Dan’s daughter’s Squier proved it is a great framework with just a pickup change. Be well my friends!
Cheers Ross, certainly was a fun one 🤓👍
I'm kind of surprised Fender hasn't been in touch to talk about Red. Even just to see why it's so good.
It really does sound so good.. No matter whether watching on a tv or a nice stereo..that balanced tone always seem to be apparent. And yeah maybe fender should just make a bunch of exact replicas.. Steel saddles!!
Oh they will, they will..
is it an Alder or Ash Tele?
@@t3hgir I think Dan's Tele is Alder.
Cheers!
Nope, we entirely agree!
What an intro DAN THE MAN!🤘
Damn that was beautiful!
Wow nighthawk. Only 90s kids will know.
Both of you gentlemen have got me on this one. I love my strat and my tele. The best of both worlds. 😅rock on, brothers.
Got into Teles after seeing Julian Lage play and got obsessed. My Baja Tele is my favorite guitar. I always think about getting some custom t style, but then i think what's the need.
It's awesome when you find that guitar. It doesn't matter what price it is, if it pairs with you it pairs.
And the Squire for the win. That thing sounds amazing.
That purple Squier had no right sounding that damn good 🤘🏻
I just received my Tele Ultra in arctic white with the S1 switch and it sounds and plays awesome, and the new radius neck is a dreamy thing! Thank you both!
I find the Tele is a guitar that has it all tonewise and that its much easier to take away stuff about a tone you don't like than it is to add it in. This is what makes the Tele the best in my book.
