This is a wonderful idea. We got a spiral sliced ham on sale this year & it's fairly tough. The shank is in the freezer for some beans over the winter, but I think I'll make this chowder for dinner tonight. The slices cut up should work & hopefully simmering a bit will tenderize them. The ham tastes great, it's just too chewy...but I guess that's what you get when you're short on money & decide to get a half ham for $1.49/lb. None of it will go to waste. I always make chicken stock from the carcass of rotisserie chicken, so I have lots of stock to use, too. My grandparents & parents lived through the Great Depression & taught me to never waste food. I am consistantly inpressed with your Cameramans technicque in showing, up close, EVERYTHING that I like to see. Especially when he does closeups at the right angle and backs away at the right time. His talent is as good as what you cook! BRAVO !!!
I just made this soup to freeze, I omitted the cheese and cream, I will add the cheese and cream once a portion is thawed, perhaps you could put notes on all your recipes on how to freeze, as I am 84 and on my own ,this is a beautiful nourishing soup , it made three good portion sizes. Absolutely delicious. I did not put onions or cheese or cream. Did use dbl celery and celery leaves chopped instead of parsley. Your instructions re use red potatoes is key. Used the potato water. Did not add powdered chicken stock until i was at the point where i had added the ham because I was afraid ham might make it too salty. ❤❤❤. Did mine in my stove top pressure cooker.
I couldn't decide between your roasted carrot soup and this beautiful potato and ham chowder, so I let my family choose. This was the winner and, let me tell you, it was soooo amazing! I make this as well , I also add in corn & sweet potato . I sometimes use canned ham when my pantry is low . I love soups . I love any type of one pot meals ✨

I start all my soups this same way. Except, I don’t ever add milk or cream. No meats. I add whatever veggies I have on hand such as either green beans or canned beans. Whatever greens I have on hand. Drizzle with olive oil. And a good load of crusty bread.

This is one of my favourite soups to make. I thicken with leftover mashed potatoes. I use ham stock... why do you use chicken? Love your recipes!

I don't eat pork and substitute turkey ham for pork ham and I add instant potato flakes to thicken the soup.
I'm surprised you didn't check the seasoning before you served the soup.
Yes, this is a tasty soup. Typically the carrots are added at the beginning as mirepoix with the onions and celery.

Ham won't thicken the soup, but it will give a great flavor.
