I have the J-max and agree that the magnetic catch can be a problem. I have to be very careful that the magnetic catch doesn’t dislodge when grinding. I have another grinder that has a screw on cup and I like it better than the J-max magnetic cup.
Awesome video man, waiting for this to come in today. I’ve seen many other videos from small RUclipsrs to the big coffee channels and yours is by far the best demo for setup. Others tend to over complicate vid with unnecessary info
I just got this grinder. I was going through the calibration and have found a difference in the manual from what you seem to be doing. You say you shouldn't be able to turn the dial past zero. The manual says zero shouldn't be when there is resistance when turning the handle. This happens much sooner than what it would take to completely stop the dial from turning past zero although it is a more arbitrary point. Anyway love the grinder thanks for the video
The Taiwan engineers that developed the 1Zpresso grinder line should be happy with their great results. Thanks for the fine hands on use video, CY. I believe that WDT refers to water droplet tech. One just give a brief mist of water or wet the end of a chopstick etc and stir around the beans before grinding. This does greatly reduce static. Cheers.
Weiss Distribution Technique The Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) is a distribution method for espresso making. A funnel placed above the portafilter helps prevent spills.5 Mar 2021 I think the water one refers to RDT.
hi, I weigh the beans into to the lower chamber, and (if not too husky) just brush the remaining powder from the bottom straight into the lower catching chamber also
I'm not sure if you are still using this grinder, but I have had excellent results with avoiding retention by spraying two small spritz of water on the beans with water and shaking them in a dosing cup before pouring beans inside of the grinder!
@@iyawnis you can do that of course but why go thru the trouble of that when most spray bottles are $1-8 USD and you refill once and you’re good for at least 6-12 months depending how big the bottle is. I also saw more consistent results with the spray because it evenly coats the beans in water vs just wetting your fingers and touching them or having it drip out of your hands
Hi CY, I use a JX Pro (in addition to the DF64) and I've had a lot of success against static with one spray of RDT and shake in a dosing cup. It won't hurt the burrs because the beans aren't completely dry anyways, and it's easier to add and remove beans from a cup than the grinder body. Then after grinding, hand bellow then tap the bottom on your tamping mat. For espresso the retainage is less than 0.1 g, and for pourover it's usually just a little chaff.
Hi DeRock. Thanks for letting me know. The reasons for me not using RDT is I get almost zero retention without RDT and hence there is no need to use it. Secondly, for espresso grind I hardly have any static issue. Hence again there is no need to use RDT. For filtered coffee, like what you are doing, I have the k pro, comandante or Millwright to substitute the DF64. My DF64 is installed with SSP Red Speed Multipurpose burr and I also tend to use it for filtered coffee top as it's extremely sweet and high clarity. The static issue on the DF64 with coarser ground is not significant. The is perhaps due to the high humidity in Singapore. However, I am mostly with aircon and hence static should show up. But it works wonderfully for me without RDT and hence I don't use it.
@@CaffeMartellaSingapore Thanks for the reply! Certainly for your other grinders without static issues, no need to RDT. It may just be one thing to try with the J Max. Along with tapping it on the table or on the side with your hand, some combination may help!
It's interesting that your grind setting for apparently espresso, is way outside the recommended values, which are between one and two - and yet, it's still produces the desired result. 😁
I have a 1ZPresso K-Pro. Just gently knock the whole grinder on your tamping mat after grinding. Almost all the grinds will be in the grinds catcher afterwards. If you really want to compare speed between handgrinders do not take the time but count the rotations you need to grind your beans... :-)
Any recommended grind setting for my Breville Bambino Espresso Machine? I did one full rotation and pulled a shot at 1.4 but no crema. Maybe I need to calibrate it.
CY, How would you compare it to the Millwright Hand grinder for espresso? I realize it grinds much faster for espresso but what about the grind itself for espresso. I have the Millwright Hand Grinder but only use it when I travel. At home I will use the Niche or the DF64.
Maybe before using your spin device and your tamper, you should rake the coffee with some instrument either a fork or some kind of whisk to evenly distribute the coffee before you do the tamping. Maybe that will help avoid the channeling.
do you think you could connect a cordless drill to the top of the hand grinder instead of cranking it by hand so it gets done faster? so you would not put the handle back on after putting beans in it, just the cordless drill on the main shaft. and, are those all made by the same company?
@@CaffeMartellaSingapore I mostly agree. I ordered a df64 and it is taking a long time to arrive. So I am thinking about what is a good backup, cheaper grinder. I was hoping I could get this, hookup a cordless drill to the tip and still get it to grind pretty quickly.
@@CaffeMartellaSingapore How can I find your website? And I'm using lelit anna but with 57mm handle it's hard to find tools, do you have any for lelit anna
