The BEST 1Zpresso grinder? My Verdict

- In this video we take a close look at 1Zpresso Q2, Jx, J-Max and K-Max.
1Zpresso Jx Pro is still a part of the brand's line up, but in the video I argue that it has been somewhat cannibalized by other models.

I bought the K-max after watching this as my first grinder and it’s currently my only grinder. I make more in my V60 than anything, but wanted the ability to make above average espresso as well. So far it has not disappointed! By far the tastiest pour over I’ve ever had - but to be fair I went from pre-ground Starbucks to whole bean specialty coffees. It was like going from a Civic to a Ferrari
Is any whole bean a specialty coffee? Or what's exactly meant by specialty? My wife's about to bring me some green non roasted whole beans from Mexico to play with. All hand grown hand picked stuff from southern Mexico. Always loved coffee but I don't keep up with all the terminology so I wasn't sure if there's something specific that makes one a specialty coffee or if it's just a way of saying whole bean or more natural? Anyway, any input be great. Can't ever learn too much
That's probably the best way to phrase it with these types of things. All the major components involved in making coffee seem to have tiers to them, where it's not worth getting anything on a similar tier of quality, but if you jump by 2 or 3, you'll really feel the difference.
It's never just 1 thing that makes great coffee, it's all the little techniques, bean choices, tools, etc used for the job. The more you hone it in and adapt all these things, the more you'll dial it in for your personal perfect brew or pull. It's a fun thing and can create some really amazing and unique cups of coffee. What a tasty hobby haha
@@naturestrail2296 specialty coffee is not defined by being whole bean. Whole bean simply means it's not pre-ground. Regardless of what you get, you want whole bean coffee and you don't want to grind it until you're ready to drink. Grinding beans exposes more surface area to oxygen which leads to stale coffee.
Hand grown and hand picked also does not necessarily define specialty. If it's low quality robusta, hand growing and picking it ain't gonna make it a fine coffee. Specialty is basically defined as 100% arabica that meets certain standards of quality. I don't know what those standards are in a way I can define them but the more you learn about the source of your coffee, where it's from, who processed it, how it was processed, and if a trusted source can provide a cupping score that falls at least in the mid-80's range, you know you're playing in the world of specialty. And there ain't no reason in hell to come back from that.
@@camaperture8116 Is there actual differences in the plant between robusta and Arabic? Can you tell visually by looking at the bean or plant at all? What makes it one or the other? Is it the ground and or weather it's grown in or an actual variance in species?
I spent last night binging on your videos, trying to choose a 1Zpresso model. I have to say, your reviews are amazing. You really give a clear idea of the products. The usability, the flavour, where and how they sit compared to other products. You have a gift for determining the information that we need in order to make an informed decision. So many reviews are lacking in info and overflowing with ego and superfluous commentary. Yours I find to be very thoughful and thorough and balanced (just like a fine cup haha!). I adore watching Hoffman videos but when it comes to reviews...I'm going to say you've got the edge. I sure hope you keep up with this pursuit and that your endeavour can grow. You deserve it and we need people like you. Cheers!
I was leaning towards the JX (to grind espresso for 2 months until I receive a Niche, and to be my forever pourover-dedicated grinder). But now I'm thinking the K-Max will provide a nicer workflow, but more importantly, a different flavour profile compared to the Niche and the JX. I'm not really certain of which flavour profile I prefer at this point so I thought this would be a good path of discovery to go down. Otherwise, if I knew I really prefer huge flat burrs, I might just be tempted into a Wilfa with SSP. But for now that seems a bit much and potentially not necessary.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Really encouraging to read :) I think K Max would be ideal for your setup.
I would not suggest Wilfa with SSP for espresso, since the motor is a bit too weak to handle more than filter coffee with those burrs. But I think you will be quite happy to start out with conicals. If not you can always sell the Niche and get a Eureka or DF64 with SSP.
Best reviewer of 1zpresso out there. You helped me decide between Q2, JX and JX Pro. Thanks 🙏 waiting on my Q2 hepta to arrive this month!
It's a great little grinder, enjoy!
You cut throught the Gordian knot of 1Zpresso model confusion with a superb presentation, thanks!
Great video!
I'm a 1Zpresso reseller. We still sell way more JX-pro's than JX or J-max, I guess it's just the right price/feature balance for a lot of people. I agree you don't always need the 12,5 micron resolution of the JX-pro with manual espresso, but having a top adjustment compared to the JX's bottom adjustment is still appealing to a lot of our customers apparently.
The J-max isn't that more expensive than JX-pro if you take into account that half of the price difference is in the cylinder case that comes with it. (and you get the outer adjustment and magnetic catch cup too...)
The K-series are identical, the only difference is the catch cup. K-pro has a screw-on cup, K-max has a magnetic cup, and K-plus has a wider magnetic cup with the 2 bottoms, flat or grounds shaker. For espresso, the grounds shaker fits perfectly on a 58mm basket, a Pro2 basket, etc so (to me) really worth having. The K-plus also has the nicer square case.
The pentagonal Q2 has a burr that's similar to the Timemore C2 in design, but AFAIK it's not the same.
Thanks Dany! Interesting to hear that the pro is still very popular. In a sense, I can understand it. It's like when you're buying a new phone, you might as well pay a bit extra to get the extra ram/storage space.
Regarding the C2 and Q2, the burr look similar but I did notice that they seem to be more aggressive on the C2. I didn't have a look at them side by side though.
Yah, the JX-PRO is so good, even 1Zpresso told me there's nothing you cannot do with it, in terms of grinding quality. So again, I can't justify dropping extra money in whistles and bells from the more expensive models. Those who still believe the more expensive models can do better in terms of fines or particle distribution, sorry to pop your bubble but NO.
What would you recommend between JXPro, K-max,plus,pro for everyday coffee brewing from espresso to french?
@@tiodeniz the most "allround" is probably the J-series but if you prefer clarity, clean flavors and slightly less body, the K-series are the better choice. They're all good choices, it really depends on your personal preferences.
@@danymeeuwissen5973 Thanks, I'll take this in consideration. But 1zpresso really has to sum up their product line. All models with letters and pro plus max variations are messed up..
Glad to see another video by you! Well down and comprehensive as always
Thank you very much for an impressively informative and detailed comparative review out of the jungle of 1Zpresso grinders. There is already a Q2 available with hexagonal burrs on the China market (same existing outer body). It’s hard to find at the moment.
You’re right that 1Zpresso appears to have adopted the East Asian smartphone manufacturer philosophy of:
1) “There’s a model for everyone”
2) frequent new model or update releases
3) varying models and availabilities for different parts of the world
Fortunately, their products are of excellent quality and performance.
*Addendum:* Maybe I didn't state it clearly enough in the video, so I want to repeat it here: The minor K Max outer burr redesign has been a game-changer.
It's now (in my humble opinion) the best multipurpose grinder that you can get for under $500.
Hey! Quick question. I just purchased a k-plus. Would it be worth returning before use to upgrade to the k-max for the updated burr setting? Or would it simply not be worth the hassle.
I got 1Z J MAX as per your reviews.
@@ryannicholls3372 Most K Plus from 2021 have the same burr design, so you're probably okay, but if you like the other aspects of Max and it's not too much hassle, I would do it.
@@ryannicholls3372 if it's a recent K-plus, going for a k-max is a downgrade, not an upgrade.
@@coffeechronicler very helpful, thank you for the excellent review!
Thank-you Aasser for this very detailed and informative video. I was planning to purchase the J Max exclusively for espresso, and keep my low cost Krups electric grinder for drip coffee. We begin our morning with drip coffee (65 grams of beans). Based on your video, and your demonstration of the speed at which this grinder can grind, and the ease of changing grind settings, I just purchased the K Max. This will now be the ONLY grinder in my kitchen. I'm sure I will notice a richer more flavourful cup of drip coffee with this high precision grinder. Consistency of the grind size is paramount, and it sounds like the K Max is now the gold standard of performance in this regard.. Thank-you again!!
Thanks for your thorough reviews! There is a lot of nuance in comparing different brands and models of gear, and I appreciate all the time you put in to this. I was specifically looking for a grinder that could do both pour over (my main daily coffee) and espresso (the occasional coffee for frothed drinks or and extra zip for long days or nights I'll be up. Yours is the only that made it really clear that I could have a good grinder that does both and without going way over my intended budget. JX it is (chosen over the Timemore C3 and Chestnut Slim Plus). Thanks!
I've had the espresso focussed (and now discontinued) JE-Plus with coated Italmill burrs for about 1.5 years now and it's been really great for my Cafelat Robot, I couldn't be happier. The magnetic blind shaker fits perfectly on top of the Robot portafilter and the adjustment steps are great for espresso. I also used it for pour-over, however, recently I added the JX for pour-over/Aeropress, so the JE-Plus is now my dedicated espresso grinder.
If I had to find an espresso grinder in their current sortiment I'd probably opt for the J-Max because of the tiny 8 microns adjustment steps. My JE-Plus has 12.5 micron steps and a single click can make a noticeable difference, so for espresso I think it's worth to get a grinder that is primarily an espresso grinder. I just wish the J-Max had a blind shaker option, I really got used to that in my workflow.
On the other hand, the K-Max with 22 microns is very appealing as an allround grinder, but it's probably slightly more pour-over/Aeropress focused. The more expensive K-Plus appears to be a K-Max plus blind shaker, but I think the blind shaker is mainly an advantage for espresso, I wouldn't bother too much about it if it's primarily for pour-over. On the other hand the blind shaker also fits perfectly on top of an Aeropress, so it can still be a plus for this use case.
I love my new JX grinder, too, it's really super fast. The only drawback is that I've been spoiled by the JE-Plus' magnetic receiver. Also, for most beans 30g is the absolute max for the JX, I sometimes have to start grinding with the handle not fully attached for a few rounds and then push it in completely. It's not a problem, but the larger capacity of a JE-Plus which I think is identical to J-Max and K-Max would be better. Still, I couldn't justify to myself to spend quite a bit more money for a receiver and slightly more capacity.
I was considering the Q2 as well, but I couldn't find the heptagonal one anywhere when I was looking a few weeks ago. Regardless of heptagonal or pentagonal versions, ultimately for me the capacity of the Q2 appeared too small. It looks perfect for a single dose, but probably couldn't handle 2 in one go, so I gave it a pass.
Great comparison video! As of April 2023, some of the 1zpresso are on sale on their website. I just placed an order for the J-Max to be my dedicated espresso grinder.
Love Love Love your videos because of you I bought my first hand grinder as (JX-Pro) and a year later bought the JX because I got tired of changeing between settings for poor over and french press all the way back down to espresso. But I have to say the JX-Pro is always producing some tasty espresso and before bought the JX it was making amazing cups of coffee. Again thank you for your videos they have given so many of us the information needed to go ahead and drop the money to buy a life long grinder. Thanks again Happy new year and God bless (:
you just made my day
i feel most youtubers have been unfair by judging grinders for having to large steps
im a happy owner of a 1zpresso q2, and i take it everywhere, i brew whole chemex'es for family with it, a lot of pourover on my origami, aeropress go on my hikes, and sour-candy shots, turkish ibrik coffee, and even great espresso, and hitting the closest step on the grinder, and then adding ors subcracting 0,2 grams or so, and you'll hit the goal.
when i bouth the q2 i were so afraid i would waste my money, and had to upgrade to be happy, but i couldn't be happyer, id love to own one of the flagships, but they are too bulky for my kind of backpacking and at home my electric grinder do almost as god a job as the q2 :D
Looking for buying q2 for mostly Turkish. Does it grind fine enough? Does it take a ton of effort and time?
@@damjanmarkovic452 it does grind fine enough, but I would go for somthig with bigger burrs then, more cutting area grinds quicker as a rule, offcorse there's desingn differences that came make some difference but 38mm will probably never grind as quick as 48mm
Although at the chanpoinship for ibrik/turkish coffee comandante c40 (with has the almost same burr as the 1zpresso q2) are used, but it does take time 😊
i love my jmax for both manual espresso and filter coffee. i know the general opinion is it's not optimal for filter but I enjoy what comes out of the cup and so does my family who I primarily brew for other than myself, so it's good enough for me. I dont need to win a barista competition or do a cupping with the ultimate clarity as long as I get something satisfying out of the brew and my brews have still been plenty fruity, plenty flavorful
When talking about difference in taste between this very good grinder and that very good grinder, I think it's a game of chasing minute differences and it's likely quite influenced by small differences in brewing technique and such. The J max is very likely to be as good a grinder for filter coffee as *big name brand* much more expensive and hyped grinder.
There's a LOT of bro science in this hobby!
Don't get me wrong, J-Max makes excellent filter coffee. There are only a few grinders under $250 that are better.
@@coffeechronicler Yeah? I currently have an espresso only grinder and I want to get into V60 and also have a second grinder for dialing a second bean like decaf. So JMax is ticking a lot of boxes as decaf espresso + pour over grinder but I keep hearing K series and C40 taste way better for pour over... and C40 is pretty cheap here 10% more than J Max, so now I have no idea what to pick :)
I’ve had the JX for a little under 2 years and it was a great upgrade from my old Skerton. Your in-depth review actually encouraged me to get it! My only real complaint is the rubber sleeve loosened and slips while using. I noticed it within my 1st year owning it and contacted the company about it. They said cleaning the sleeve would help, but no luck. I’ve read other users also saying their JX & JX Pro rubber sleeves loosened as well. Also, the static issues are real. I have to brush the fines that gather on the dial and catch cup after each use.
Yea same for me I have rather big hands and a strong grip so I just squeeze the life out of it and grinding is a breeze.
Did you try to wash the rubber sleeve in hot water and baking soda? And wipe away any grease from the body. That does the trick for me in case of slipping.
@@coffeechronicler I have a brand new one and it does it anytime I'm grinder finer than sea-salt. Super annoying. Haven't tried washing it....because why should I? It's brand new.
Any advice/recs? I brew mainly pour over/aeropress. Thinking of swapping for a Comandante or Kinu.
+1 on sleeve slippage and static
@@coffeechronicler I soaked the rubber sleeve in hot water and baking soda and it seems to have temporarily helped. I think the hot water shrunk it a bit and the baking soda left a chalky film that helps with grip. I foresee having to do this again though. I wished 1zpresso would either improve the rubber material or change it to match the other grinders.
I love my K-max. I use it only for pour-over coffee and once it’s calibrated, it’s a pleasure. I enjoy the actual grinding and observing the differences among beans and the weight and feel and am totally happy I spent the absurd amount of money ! In the past 8 weeks it’s been in Massachusetts, Maine, st Thomas ( a tad weighty but my bathing suits were light so coffee and books) and I have enjoyed the heck out of it
Thanks for commenting. I'm waiting for mine to arrive. How do you calibrate it?
I found this video and the comments really helpful

@@pameladrexler5345 Thank you.
What to get j max, jx pro or k max for, mokapot/v60? I Love sweet, fruity coffee with aromas.
Thank you for your comment about jx being suitable for manual lever espresso machines. I've been scouring the Internet for this info! Great review!
I appreciate how you recommended grinders based on taste preferences! 👍
Hey, thanks for your videos! I bought the JX after watching your channel. I appreciate your attention to detail! Can't wait for it to come in.
The cellphone analogy is a good one, I don't need to upgrade from a Samsung S20 to S21 or Apple iPhone 12 to a iPhone 13 unless I'm the type that wants the latest and greatest. I'm happy with my Jx Pro and small changes and improved features isn't going to get me to rush out and replace it.
Same here! Totally happy with the JX-pro. I just can't imagine how 'superior' a hand grinder can be over the JX-pro. It just excels in every aspect!
Great review. You are straight-forward and well-articulated
I've tried them all and to me the JX-pro is still king, all-rounder grinder. Amazing flavor and smooth operation. There's NOTHING I would want from its bigger brothers in terms of performance, flavor or quality. In fact, I love the JX-pro adjustment knob which is hidden under the handle lid. This is cool because you just can't touch it accidentally and change your setting while grinding. Also the wider body and upper opening makes it easier to fill the beans without making a mess.
JX-pro is superbly adjustable (only second to the espresso-oriented Jmax, and not by much) and makes absolutely delicious and sweet filter and pour over coffee. Less parts, easy to clean and calibrate. You may think that it's no longer easy to recommend given that price wise the newer Jmax or the Kpro aren't quite far. And I agree, most people would just pick the freshly released models for a similar price BUT if you look closer, the JX-pro is still the best option as all rounder, technically speaking and it's also cheaper
Great point , thanks ,...I am also thinking about JX-pro , I found it even cheaper then standard Jx , in my country for 142 euros , ...and want to upgrade from my Coffee tales grinder ( basically something like Xeoleo or Timemore C2) , I would like to have a lever espresso on future , so that is the reason for upgrade.i was only curious about the speed of Jx pro , i think Chronicler mentioned that it is slower than standard Jx ....but if you are saying it is that smooth , then I am leaning towards Jx pro....thanks for your opinions
@@mrYodacop all grinders from 1Zpresso are very fast and JX isn't any faster than the JX-pro TBH
I would even say that speed isn't a relevant factor here. As said, these grinders are really fast and really precise. Some people may argue the JX-pro is better for espresso, and this is true ONLY if you're using a real espresso machine. But for lever units like the Flair, it doesn't matter and you'll be OK with any model.
K-series is a bit easier to crank too, as the burrs have 7 edges instead of J series 6 and are bit sharper too
@@manuelpenaruiz3694 thanks for all the info. Can I ask which one would you recommend for a flair neo?
Totally agree. But I’m still thinking about picking up the heptagonal Q2 for a different taste profile. That burr looks like it can deliver.
Thank you! The 1Zpresso website is a confusing wall of text and hard to compare the various models. They hide the direct comparison in an FAQ. This video makes is clear the differences between the models.
I moved up from the plastic Hario grinder to the Jx Pro and my life will never be the same. I am now experimenting with every type of brew method. I just bought a rebuilt Gaggia Classic Pro without really ever having had much espresso before. I have had about three 36 gram doubles a day for the past two weeks, and I'm getting a little jumpy.
I just got the K-plus, upgrading from a cheap electric burr(Sboly). So much more consistent, no big surprise there. What really impressed me (and sold me on it) was the grind time. I thought I'd get this grinder as a way to get great pour-overs with espresso capabilities every once in a while. My thought was I'd get a flat burr electric for espresso later on and therefore have dedicated grinders for both. Now that the K-plus is in my hands, I still think I'll follow that plan, but solely to have a flat burr. I really don't think that there is much to be gained in workflow speed from an electric, the K-plus is wicked fast, consistent and virtually no retention. Grind effort is pretty easy, even with light roast at 3.5 clicks. I'd need a pretty fast recovering espresso machine to outpace the grinder workflow.
I have zero regrets, for anyone considering, buy one (any of the line from what I gather in this video and my experience with the one product).
Wow production quality in the videos improved, love it dude
I've been debating between the K-max and J-Max with emphasis on espresso 60% of the time and the rest on pour over. that said this is really helpful and i may just go with the K-Max
I had the same decision to make and went with the k-max. Across all taste test opinions online The stainless steel burr set design and engineering seems to have a much better interaction with beans than the coated titanium in the j-max. Resulting is a more refined flavour experience, a quality in the same direction set by the commandante’s set up. And with over 400 plus steps the j-max just seems overkill if you only need to experience espresso with in twenty clicks. That just seems much more practical.
Illuminating, well thought out, and well presented. Thank you sir, you really helped me out with some of my first world problems today. Cheers!
I have some version of the K-Plus. It is expensive but honestly fantastic all around.
The convenience of the magnetic catch cup and the outer adjustment ring are things I would never ever give up on another hand grinder.
They probably do release way too many models which can be very confusing for the customer , but at least they innovate heavily with these sorts of features.
It is this innovation and convenience which leads me to keep recommending them to people over other popular grinders such as the Commandante.
Thank you for a great review! I will be considering the JMax or Jx-Pro
While both are awesome, kindly consider the Jmax has a very fine superior external thread that can suffer a bit from coffee fines build up. You would even damage the thread if not careful enough. For espresso is a dream machine, but the JX-pro does as good as the J for espresso and runs bit cheaper
If your goal is an all rounder workhorse, the JX-pro can be beaten just yet
@@manuelpenaruiz3694 hey thanks for your reply. I would be using this grinder exclusively for espresso. I would keep my electric grinder for pour over applications
Another awesome grinder review, sir! I think 1zpresso is going to have a tough competition soon. Try looking up or reviewing the Kingrinder lineup, like the K2 and K6. Based on what I read, they're basically like a cheaper version of 1zpresso but with same or maybe even better performance.
Bought the J-max after coming across your review while researching for my first grinder. This is my first foray away from Nespresso and the like, and I’m enjoying the learning experience. I’ve a D’Longhi Dedica which, again, takes a bit of getting used to. I’m still hit-and-miss with the fineness of the grind and weight I put in the basket… not to mention I haven’t a clue on what beans I should really be using.
If you’re bothered, I’d love to hear of any pointers you could give me?
Thanks
Beans from a coffee roaster, fresh.
James Hoffman has a video about dosing. A coffee scale is a must so you can measure how much coffee grinds you put in, and the amount of espresso you get out. This is how you work out your ratios. Experiment and good luck.
I use my k-max I picked up last month for every brew I make... I prefer it over the Encore and love the ritual. I also think it makes better coffee.
I'm waiting for k-max to arrive. My friend has a k-max and virtuoso plus (similar to encore). The coffee from both grinders (k-max and virtuoso) is comparable. I have tried both. I cannot say it's better from k-max. I want k-max because it's a hand grinder. My friend prefers k-max to comandante.
Thank you for the video, Asser! I was starting to get confused by all the 1zpresso models.
I have the Q2 with heptagonal burrs. It’s awesome. I see it is slower to grind than the other models, but it’s fast enough for me, and I have no issue with it because the feel of grinding coffee with it is so nice and pleasing. Another nice part about is that the grip part unscrews so you can easily brush and blow fines out from the top chamber for a quick cleaning. You can only grind up to 20g at a time, but that’s not such a big deal for me. It really is a joy to use everyday.
Small awesome grinder!
I like to drink espresso with caramel and chocolate flavor, what should i buy k plus, k ultra or k max to make espresso with caramel and chocolate flavor ? Thanks brother
Thanks for making this! Your insights are appreciated!
Just picked up a K-Max. Holy cow that thing is impressive. Still learning buy I"m freaking amazed.
After watching your very informative video I had to make a choice between the JX and the Q2 grinders. The combination I would like (and many others I suspect) is to have the Heptagonal burrs from the Q2 together with the capacity of the JX. Now that the JX has been discontinued are you likely to review the new J that replaces it.
The J model that replaces the Jx has the same burrs. However, there's also the brand new X Ultra, which is a good compromise between volume , functionality and the hepta burrs from the Q2. Check out my latest short video for more.
Thanks for that vital bit of info. I see that Sigma Coffee will have it in stock in approx 2 weeks.
I’m torn between a J-Max and K-Plus. I’ll be using mostly for espresso, and a very occasional moccamaster drip or French press. The K-plus has the blind basket that looks quite useful and less messy for espresso workflow, and easier to switch between brew methods, but the J-Max is supposed to be better for espresso. Any recommendation?
Which one did you get
I love my K pro. As a tip: DON'T place the head upside down often when storing. I did that so the bits of coffee remaining inside would not fall off to the counter, now I can see one or two scratches on the otherwise beautiful aluminium :(.
Also another tip: If you look at the top piece on the bottom side (the lower parts of the burrs) you will notice some brown 'dent like' shaped thing on it. At first I PANICKED cause I thought it was rust and I ruined my grinder with RDT. Nope, it's just coffee oil, and it comes off easily with a Q tip.
I’m planning on getting my first lever machine in 2023. What hand grinder would you recommend for dialing in on a lever. I have a Baratza Sette 270 for my Gaggia Classic Pro machine Thanks
Don't think any of them will be an upgrade compared to the Sette, more like a side-grade.
Really thinking about getting the K-Max. I currently have a Hario Slim and a Cuisinart "burr" grinder (block burrs I think). I currently brew with a Ninja Hot and Cold machine, uses #4 cone filters. However, I may get an Aero Press or maybe a manual lever espresso press, at some point.
What would you recommend for day to day Aeropress usage?
Thanks. I’ll be interested in comparing the different grind size settings on the Sette for dialing in the lever vs the GCP. Enjoy your videos.
Thank you for this awesome review! Do you have a picture comparing the outer/inner burr sets of the older k plus to the k max?
I have the k-max and love it so far . Coming from a 30 hand grinder with ceramic burrs along with an electric blade grinder . The quality is miles above the later.
Hello dear friend! Thank you for such informative information in your videos!! Thanks to you, I chose 1zpresso jx and I am very pleased with her, she makes an excellent fine grinding for Turkish coffee and any grinding, and most importantly everything is very fast, but they say about her that she is very bad at espresso. I now want to buy Saeco Picopresso for espresso and I 'm wondering if I should choose another coffee grinder for this ( jx-pro, j-max, x-pro) what would you recommend?
Jx is okay for espresso; give it a try before you consider upgrading.
In your article, you mentioned that the Q2 pentagonal also makes a good espresso. What grind setting did you use since the 1zpresso site does not indicate in their grind guide for the Q2?
We Want More Videos from the mysterous Coffee master!!
I have already watched this video several times. I think I am going to get the JMax finally.
Hi, great video! What is the best setting for v60 using heptagonal q2? Currenly waiting my heptagonal q2 arrive. Upgrading my $10 grinder😂
I might get a Flair Pro2, would JX enough for the brew? thanks 🙏🙏
I got the K-Plus, but I didn't know they had an old and new burr design. is there a way to see which one it uses?
Thanks for review what grind settings are you using for moka pot ?
Hi there! Very much appreciate your videos
I'm curious which of the grinders would be best for a cafelat robot? I think i remember in one of your previous videos that the K-Plus wasn't that good, but am not sure if the updated burr in the K-max/K-plus would be ok?
I'm coming from a $20 blade grinder and moka pot and it's time for an upgrade 😅
I don't have a robot yet, but will be looking to get one soon. From the videos, it seems like that the JX is best for brewed coffee...so part of me is thinking of getting a basic JX for that..and perhaps a seperate J-max/K-Plus (or even a specialita) for the espresso shots..particularly if it's a lighter roast as I prefer those. I just don't know how good any of the hand grinders here would be good enough for the robot...or if I get a hand grinder good for the robot, it won't be as good for brewed coffee...thoughts?
J-Max would be the best option for Cafelat Robot.
Kudos for the great content!
What area your thoughts on the K-Plus. Would it better than ZP6 for brewing?
Thanks. ZP6 is a bit cleaner. You can check my latest video for more.
Dude izpresso changed the game with the external adjustment. I went from a jx pro to the k plus, and just the overall user experience is so much better. I used to be discouraged changing brew methods just because i didn’t want to count 3 or 4 damn rotations on the awkward and small adjustment ring on the jx pro lol
Hi there. So you think the K ultra (or k series) can produce a good frind for turkish coffee ?
J ultra better for finner grind need i just got one and it great for everything while being amazing for espresso
For making pour over in a v60 if choosing between the c40 mk4 and the kmax what would you choose?
KMAX all the way man. The coffee they produce are almost identical, which needs Lance Hendricks to spot the difference. The main selling point of KMax and most 1zpresso grinders is that the grinding speed. It's fast and leaves MK4 in smoke. The dial on KMax is also much simpler to use, you don't have to remember the clicks like MK4. Not to mention the price of MK4 is nearly 1.5 time of KMax at some places. All the best mate.
Hey which one you recommend for Turkish coffee (powder fine)?
Thanks for review just got my K-Max recently.
Finally I found someone call this brand easy-presso like me not one-z-presso YEAH 😁(just my understand since I know this brand from e-pro model in 2018 and I think this company from china and in chinese pronouced 1 as i-i so I read it ii-z-presso since then)
Time for an update to this! Looking forward to hear your opinion of the new X-pro!
I think i'm gonna take the plunge and get it, as it sits between the JX and JXpro but is smaller !
But does it fit inside an aeropress....
Hi! Tell me, please, which of the presented coffee grinders is suitable for jezve?
May I ask why Kplus does not make the list. I am happy with mine for pourover
It's still a solid model, I just picked the grinders I would go for at different price ranges/use cases. K Max definitely has the new outer burr design, whereas not all K Plus units that are in stock at distributors across the world will have it. Besides that small tweaks mentioned in the video, including looks.
@@coffeechronicler There is a way to know if my kplus has the newer outbur desing or the old one? some visual clue?
Thanks for the great quality content. you helped me buy it. here in Brazil because of the devalued currency, buying such a grinder is a big deal.
If you were to choose between the k-max and the Wilfa uniform for exclusively pour over (V60 and Kalita) which would you choose?
If we're just talking about flavors, out of the box, K Max would be my choice. If you add SSP burrs to the Wilfa, then that would be the winner.
@@coffeechronicler alright, thanks a lot for your answer! I really like how hand grinders have very low retention and lower noise - But I really care about the flavor in the cup, so I’m still considering the uniform with ssp upgrade (tho more expensive and feels like less of a complete product in a sense)
@@nikolajhansen15 I'd probably go K max in your case. The flavor is top notch for both pour over and espresso.
Also, if I were to go for SSP burrs, I'd much rather use the Ode than Wilfa, due to a better motor.
@@coffeechronicler I’ve decided to go with the k-max 🙏 only cremashop sells this model in eu as far as I can tell, but I’m so excited to get my hands on it! :D thanks for all the help in this decision
in Japan they have some sick 1zpresso JPPRO & Z Pro they're like a step up from the flagship Max series (Amazon jp has'em)
I have been using K-max for espresso and pour over. These days I have an idea to separate the grinding for expresso and pour over. I heard about the Q2 is very similar than Comandante C40. I'm hesitating about these two grinders. Have you any suggestion for me? Thanks!
Thank u for this video - it's great & very helpful! I have K Plus, K Pro & now J Max. Partially for my dislike of the magnetic catch cups (i've knocked them off a few times!), I prefer the K Pro. Also i like the sleekness of it. Could u please tell us specifically why u don't prefer the K Pro?
Nice collection! I think K Pro is too easy to knock over with that slimmer catch cup. Those on the K Max and Plus provide better balance..
hi Paul, whats ur opinion bout J max compare to K plus in terms of espresso taste? any significant difference?
@@nicoradityoboedhi8961 Nico sorry for delayed response. I do make espresso at all but luv the J Max for all manual brewing methods. My friend only drinks espresso using the K Plus & he thinks it's great. He is not into using my J Max for comparison. Apologies i can't help u
@@paulmillerick4092 thanks Paul!
I know you are really into 1Zpresso grinders, but I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts on the Timemore G1 plus, and the newest Normcore, especially for pour over and aeropress.
which coffee grinder is the most versatile for you, if you use it from a pour over to an espresso?
Hi, great content on your channel! I would like to know if the K MAX and J MAX handle is magnetic or just the cup? Thanks.
Just the cup...
I'd love for you, or someone to do some comparisons of the best hand grinders vs the best home electric grinders like the niche zero.
Moved from a JX-Pro to a K-Max a few months ago. I absolutely love both models, but I prefer the experience I get with the K-Max. I didn't give myself a chance to test them side-by-side, so I can't say how much better my brews taste with the K-Max, but it just feels better to use. I think the dream would be if 1zpresso released a model with the K-Max burr set and design, but the J-Max adjustment mechanism.
No doubt the K is great but there's nothing the K can do the JX-PRO can't
Just some slight improvements in user experience, different adjustment mechanism but in the final cup, blind test, you just can't tell a difference
In fact I still prefer the JX-PRO as it's impossible to move the adjustment dial by accident while grinding, as can happen with the external adjustment models. From the JX-pro and beyond the difference is in the bells and whistles, and price of course!
@@manuelpenaruiz3694 Different burr sets I believe the K series is more like the Comandante c40, pretty high clarity and great for coarser brew methods. But also works well for espresso.
I wonder if the K burr could be used in the JMax or JX, they're all 48 mm? But could still have different attachments. With 48 mm being the standard across almost all 1zpresso except Q2 it would be cool if some people started making burrs. 48 mm conical could be like 64 mm flat.
@@221b-l3t I got lots of 64mm flat burrs. They're different but both good. I hear good things about the Q2 burrs even though they're smaller. I just recently realized commandante c40 is also smaller and that's one of the top rated hand grinders pretty much. 1zpresso K series is supposed to be similar but easier/ nicer to use and better value.
I think J burrs give you more traditional espresso. Less clarity more body vs the k series. Lots of people love it too.
@@BensCoffeeRants Cool thanks, I do enjoy sweetness and body as long as there is still claritynin there. But doesn't have to be unimodal style.
And yeah Q2 and C40 have the same size and the hard to find heptagonal burrs are allegedly modelled on C40 burrs while pentagonal are modelled after Timemore C2. Too bad the heptagonal is so rare, some people think it makes grinds very close to the Commandante. Hope they bring that burr back.
On the K-Max, What grind settings are typically using for light roasted coffees for v60 and for espresso?
5.5-6 for V60. Around 2.5 for espresso but also depends on the beans and basket.
@@coffeechronicler nice! I’ve been struggling a little with lighter roasts but appreciate the feedback thanks!
I received my J Max today and the adjustment ring and thumb nut (two bits from the top of the shaft) were loose in the case. It also seems like the burrs are stuck. Any Ideas? I saw this happen to someone else in an Amazon review. Bleh.
Edit: I decided to try gently tap the shaft with a screw driver and the burrs released. Did a quick test and ground for what should be close to my moka pot settings on my Q2 and got a very similar grind consistency.
I imagine this is just that 1 in 1000 case where the assembly isn't quite 100% perfect.
I'm barely 1 cup in on the jx for cowboy coffee and it's already the best purchase ever made.
Hello! I’m torn between the J-Max and the K-Max - although I do a lot more of pour over + drip coffee currently, I do want to be prepared for the espresso machine I plan to purchase in the near future. Do you have any thoughts on the taste of the pour over comparing the JMax vs KMax? Also, I see in other RUclips videos that some people have had a problem dialing in their espresso with the KMax because of the 22micron jump (the espresso goes from 34 seconds to 24 seconds in one single adjustment of the KMax), so I’m leaning towards the JMax for that reason but dont want to sacrifice on the flavors of my pour over + drip coffee! Thank you for your time!
I would still go K Max then. You can always adjust your dose 0.5 g up or down if your shot moves too much.
@@coffeechronicler thank you for your reply! What are your thoughts on the taste of pour overs/drip coffee with the KMax vs JMax? (I prefer light roasts). Thank you!
Great comparison. Which year did the JX change from their initial release version? Thanks!
Think it was 2020. Just took a while before I got around to try it.
Hi , which model more suitable for both coffe filter v60 and espresso ?
Hey great video! thanks! May I know what was your grind setting for JX (non-pro) when you did this video? 12g at 13-15 seconds. With light medium roast, I did 15g (63 clicks) at 23 seconds and 20g at 30 seconds, and I was turning the handle at your speed. Wondering why it seems slower instead of 1g per second.
I just ordered the K-max, to replace my Graef CM800 grinder that got me into this whole coffee mess. I will be using it for everything from french press to hopefully espresso, once I get a machine. I just hope it will make it easier to get a good cup, I've been struggling sometimes with the Graef.
What settings do you recommend to start out with for V60? I'm using the Tetsu Kasuya 4:6 method, it seems a lot more simple to me, compared to James Hoffmans method.
Love your videos, keep them comming :D
Thanks for the kind words! I think you'll be happy with that upgrade.
I'd probably try the 4:6 method with setting 7.5 on K max and adjust from there.
for mr Chronicler and others with input: I do mainly dark roasts and I'm looking for a portable grinder for pour overs and the choice is between either the Q2 pentagonal (119 eur) or the JX (159 euro) is it worth the extra money and weight for the JX or is the Q2 pentagonal the best option in your opinion? cheers for potential input and great vids! =)
Hi, I own a Wilfa Uniform, I’m using it for pour overs, aeropress and also moka pot and I am very satisfied with the grinder. Now I would like to also add an espresso machnine to my coffee bar. I am thinking of Flair 58. My question is would the K-Max be a good grinder to pair it with Flair 58? I will still keep the Wilfa for other brewing methods, however I will also use the hand grinder for other methods when travelling. This is why I would prefer the K-Max over J-Max, I am just not sure if the 22,5 microns is to big of a step to dial in the espresso on the Flair 58? Would you recommend J or K-Max for my situation?
K Max would be fine. Lever machines are more forgiving with fine-tuning, so you shouldn't have problems.
what about the KINGrinder selection of grinders(the k3 looks like a cheaper version of the jx but with coated burrs)? They look like the 1Zpresso grinders but they're a little bit cheaper, are they a good option, because i want one capable of mainly moka pot and entry espresso level(and maybe aeropress).
For the externally adjustable ones:
K4 = JMax but with 16um steps
K6 = KMax but with 16um steps.
And some other cosmetic differences of course (no magnetic catch-cup, no carry case, etc).
@@ash.hunter Thanks, but what about the k3 and k5? Because the I can't find k4 and k6 on Amazon, only the rest of them
@@pedrocamara8495 Burr sets:
K3 = K4
K5 = K6
Adjustment is 18um per-click internal.
I don't know about equivalence to 1Zpresso, other than all of their K-series use the same burrs. Not sure which 1Zpresso ones use the titanium-coated burrs of the K3/4 other than the J-Max.
I go the Timemore C2 Max grinder on a great Amazon deal. How does it stackup to those? Is it similar due to the similar burrs?
Timemore C2 is similar to Q2 with pentagonal burrs. It's not quite as consistent as the more expensive 1Z grinders, but still very decent.
Which is better keno classic coffee grinder or zpresso k-plus
A reworked question for Coffee Chronicler.....Do you think there are any electric grinders (for home use) that can grind for pour-over as effectively as the Comandante C40? (assuming med-dark roasts)?
K max vs comandante for V60?
Is the K-Max better than the K-Plus? They're naming scheme is confusing, I'd assume "Max" is the top of the line. Is the Plus more expensive only because of the catch cup?
IMO K Max is the better choice.. But they are basically similar.
Great video! I find your content super helpful :)
I'm just getting into expanding my equipment. At the moment, I have an Aeropress and a borrowed grinder from a friend, but plan to add both filter coffee and a Sage Bambino Plus. Is the K-Max suited to find a good setting for the Bambino (which I plan to make 60-70% of my future coffee with), or would it be hard to dial in, since the steps between settings are not small enough?
I have used the K Max with the Bambino. It works great 👍
@@coffeechronicler Cool :) Thank you so much for the super quick reply!
@@coffeechronicler I have the bambino and having problem dialing in..what do you use with the kmax and bambino (not plus)? ty
Did you ever review the cheap 64mm grinder in the background of your df64 blog? Wondered what you thought of it.
You mean the Xeoleo ghost burr? Haven't published a review yet but will plan to in the coming months.
@The Coffee Chronicler Hi Asser, I don't know if you remember me or not, but I was the one who told you I enjoyed a 1:40 ratio(25 grams per liter), who couldn't stand filter but was curious of espresso and I just wanted go give you an update on my coffee journey and the strange turn it has taken. In spite of your hesitancy, given the weakness of coffee I enjoyed, I bought a Cafelat Robot. Of course with the Baratza Encore it was horrible. The only way I would enjoy it was with milk or doing a Cafe Cubano(which was great). And then like a mad man, instead of saying "Clearly espresso is not for me, I will just stick with my weak coffee" I went ahead and pulled a trigger on a Ditting 807 Lab Sweet Grinder, with which I could easily start a coffee shop. I had it aligned, and afterwards tried making some espresso. And it was AMAZING. Just unbelievable. Sweet and well balanced, and not at all bitter. And I have been drinking espresso ever since. I have been to plenty of coffee shops and only one rivals the espresso I make at home. I seem to enjoy 1:1.8s, ristrettos and Allonges 1:5-6 ratio. After that I started enjoying Turkish Coffee(1:10) as well. What is really strange is I like my weak coffee(1:40) and my super strong one(1:1-2), but cannot stand any filter coffee ratio, even if done in a french press, or a syphon, or a chemex, or just as a weaker turkish coffee, I find it horribly bitter and sour(even though by all accounts it is well extracted). So that is where I am at right now, everyday drinking espressos and my weak infusion brew. I still haven't looked into Roasting, but I might buy a small roaster soon enough. I just thought I should let you know since it is quite the anomaly by all accounts... Happy New Year!
Hi David, I remember your comment from a while back! Great to hear that you have found your path in coffee. I'm sure almost any coffee and any ratio will taste amazing with that Ditting as well :D
Hi, great video. Would you compare any of the models with the same clicks as the comandante?
Not sure I understand the question?
@@coffeechronicler are 20 clicks of the comandante also 20 clicks on the other models? SInce the comandane seems to be the standard which grinder grinds in the same ballpark?
@@vizzo7 Ah, not at all. But it's easy enough to figure out new settings with each grinder
Will the Q2 (5-core) grind well for the picopresso, if so both are tiny so will be a great combination.
Can you please explain what setting you recommend for pour over on the JX new version. I have heard two full rotations-this +5 clicks but all of this just seemed too fine to me. Do you recommend under two full rotations?
Hello Sir Asser! You can ignore my question until the appropriate time. I have the J-Max and I can't seem to remove the internal burr for deep cleaning. Any tips on how I can get it un-stuck? Thank you for your help.
If you have a glove with some sort of grip on it will be easier. It can be a bit hard the first time. And then of course remember that it's a reverse thread.
