10+ yrs ago, My first experience with a turbo Honda was a 95 ex budget build. A friend of mine ran an old Mercedes turbo with a dsm side mount intercooler, injectors, and bov. Burned a chip with his own tune by crunching some numbers (on the rich side) and this thing was impressive! We later walked a 350z and that guy was confused and angry by the beater civic that just pulled on him. Lol Project Payless was the cars name.
@@kennethpowers8995 That's a piece of history right there! I'm pretty sure that's what my friend used. Best part of his build was that he boost controlled it with his right foot so it wouldn't go over 10psi. 🤣 The turbo was internally gated to about 14? And he didn't want to make too much power on the stock internals d16z6.
@svKam it ran perfect for the 3 years my friend had it. He sold it to a younger guy that drove it too hard and melted the top of a piston. He was doing 5th gear pulls on the highway. The stock D series will last forever if you keep it at 200whp or less and don't do back to back 5th gear pulls. Lol
@Daver G as a generalization, it's definitely true about the engine falures. As specifics go, those failures were due to the cam lobes spinning independently from the shaft causing agressive and unwanted timing change that causes piston to valve contact. Most OHC motors are interferance engines so if the mechanism for controlling timing (cam, belt, chain, tensioner) ever fails, there will be piston to valve contact. Why are we even talking about this? Well because while most engines have cams ground from a solid billet, this motor strangely had its lobes made seperate from the shaft which was hollow and interference sawgged onto the shaft. As history proves this was a terrible idea because the lobes rotate over time. I assume that after the Ford Yamaha partnership that yielded such awesome cylinder head potential wasn't cheap, they maybe chose a process they could tone down some of the final cost😬. After the failures forever doomed the motor to "that motor with catastrophic engine failures," they recalled vehicles and welded their lobes to the shaft thus fixing the issue for the stock bumpsticks. What you have left is a very promising small displacement DOHC (Yamaha-headed) V8. Not a terrible candidate for love just like it's past V6 counterpart. And since we're talking about performance mods, ported heads, and aftermarket cams mean that the "engine failure" stigma becomes irrelevant so long as one does the usual stuff you do for big power (ARP hardware, MLS head gaskets, etc).
You and the people around you are great because of all the trial and error you save people some of us are not tech savvy and would appreciate a quick verbal rundown on the price of the components thanks for everything

I had a room mate that had a del sol with the same power. And it was insane. 3rd gear at 90mph the thing wanted to torque steer the wheel out of your hand if you weren’t used to it. On the dyno it had a theoretical top speed of 170mph with the “dx” transmission. Sad times when we pulled the original head gasket at 230,000 miles had the head ported, bigger turbo cam and eagle rods. Funny thing was that it didn’t make more power on the dyno. Would love to see a torque-monster made out of the Acura 3.7L or Honda 3.5L with some home head-porting, intake mods, throttle-body mods, N/A or Turbo, more torque the better.
King of the junkyards, here's an idea. Fab something up and adapt that GM v6 supercharger you tested on an LS and topped out at 300 ish horse, on 6 or 8 cylinders 😅, on a small Honda, and see if it can do that there. You said those can be found for dirt around there, and I recall some other RUclipsrs getting a Honda DelSol for 200 bucks. Some injectors, at that level one could go for some Subaru ones or something, nothing special aftermarket, maybe a fuel pump from a truck, 300 horse for 500 bucks in something that weights nothing, would be something, maybe.
Great video Richard, very cool to see as I have a turbo sohc Honda myself. I am curious to see the differences in power/response between different sized intercooler piping. Say 2.5" vs 3" for example. Thank you.
Awesome! I didn’t hear what fuel this was on? 91 or e85? I’m assuming e85 with those numbers. Also was there head studs or any ring gapping going on? Big LS guy here, but I do enjoy the Honda stuff. Keep it coming
Love the content, would love to see a B18B limit on nitrous, I have been running mine on 100 shot for a while and want to take it to 150hp but also have a turbo kit for it and not sure if I should just slap the turbo on or keep the nitrous.
Even before the IC could be useful, close to compressor outlet. Total evaporative cooling might help keep IAT's at the TB more consistent over a long pull.
Considering how rapidly that torque curve drops off above 6500 rpm, it looks like valve float is beginning or something weird is going on with the turbo. That motor should be making peak power at 7000 rpm or higher. The one thing I don’t like about cheap turbos are the manifold designs. The primaries need to be longer and equal length.
Ezequiel Ortiz : In the Americas Ezequiel. Hondata and Crome are the worlds easiest Fuel curve computers, and Hondas no turbo edict makes fours the most natural go to. Down here in Australia and New Zealand, its all in line sixes. Ive done a 250 Honda Cross Flow head 84 Falcon, a turbo Cologne 2.3 V6 Taunus, and had a host of six cylinder Toyotas, Nissan LD28 Diesel Ford Falcon and a LD 28 Nissan engined Holden Commodore . My last RB25 was a Stagea RS4. The only problem....Richard Holdener said it best "Pumps and Hose...".Current rides Suzuki Vitara and RAV 4.1 with 3SGE.
I would love to see some b18b stuff. Here goes... In the spirit of challenging conventional wisdom I would like to ask the question, could a built LS head be superior for turbo applications? Here is why I ask, the LS head yes has smaller valve diameter than a gsr/ b16a head but, I believe the valves can be upgraded to 33 mm. Secondly the LS has a longer valves and the valve stems are larger than the gsr/b16a. Springs and cam can provide huge improvements there. From what I have found, the LS head can support more valve lift Soo, GSR sized valves plus more lift probably = good! I do have concerns of valve clearance here which is one reason I ask. In this configuration I presume a dished piston would be ideal, lower compression, more valve clearance blah blah turbo happy. Lastly to bring this all together and this is where the hate comments will come, having a single fuel and ignition timing map should create a more stable and reliable tune as compared to VTEC. I have always feared lean conditions when VTEC kicks as the new maps switch.
Surprised the rods didn't turn into noodles past the 230 mark lol. I'd like to see a big bang F22a non vtec, they get crap for blowing ringlands so it'd be interesting to see what some ring gap would do!
Would love to see some F22a1-6 any of those motors the ex motor from the 92 93 accords i have several of these i just ported a head and am doing a full rebuild on one with new rings and bearings and a balance shaft delete so if you possibly happen to have one of those motors that would be cool to watch any honda content really though even though on the boost side of things you got it pretty well covered i love NA as well as e 85 so if you do anything along those lines that would be cool
Would be interesting to see how goo or how bad could a FMU equipped motor. Could be a honda or any 4 cylinder. Back in the day i built an fmu equipped turbo civic and that thing ran very well for years at 12 psi, the timing was addressed with an MSD box with BTM. The engine never broke the car was totaled and it ran fine till then.
Richard, I run a D16Y8 in an ashpalt circle track car. I won the championship with it last year but now I'm getting smoked by newer celicas and RSX's. Rules say I HAVE to use the stock PCM. How much WOT fuel tuning can be done with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator? Or how could I go about getting a good AFR with light mods without a tuned PCM...orr, how could I hide a tuned PCM in a P2P case lol.
What about transmissions? Do the D series trans's hold up to 300+ hp? So often these swaps are determined by the drivetrain. Maybe its worth going B series for a stronger trans? Could you test a couple different trans to destruction?
Let's see how ported heads affect power and torque, bit by bit, do the throat, then port match, then 3 angle valve seats, cut back valves, bigger inlet valves etc......rather than just the V8 stuff where a different head is bolted on.
Which cam were you running? I have this exact turbo kit on my Y8, and with a stock cam, I made 320hp/265tq to the tires (vitara/eagle bottom end). I could hit 20psi, but after about 6000rpm it would slowly drop back to 17psi.
I ran that egale Vitara setup few years back on a y7. Made 470hp/378tq. Then I switched few things out and we made 678hp440tq. Now I just went VTEC y8 and a cam, just need to get it on Dyno.
I want to turbo a 1.0L Geo Metro, that I have sitting around. What do you think about sticking on a Borg Warner turbo #1-853-970... that I also have. Do you think that combo would do anything of great smiles? What injectors?
I love your other guys videos. It would be great if you could expand it further, into other odd ball import and domestic performance engines. Say the GM v6s or the hot Toyota 4cyls.
I know they are very popular with the younger crowd especially but I always wondered why do people put so much time money and effort into a Honda when you can put it into a Chevy V8?

I love all your content, but I'm currently wanting to put a boosted B20 in my Civic wagon oh, so I'd like to see some B20 combinations.
Love the content, would love to see a B18B limit on nitrous, I have been running mine on 100 shot for a while and want to take it to 150hp but also have a turbo kit for it and not sure if I should just slap the turbo on or keep the nitrous.
D-series 14 psi on stock Rods and Pistons? I wonder how long that will last
You should do a water meth injection test, with different location for spray, direct port, close to tb and right after intercooler
Even before the IC could be useful, close to compressor outlet. Total evaporative cooling might help keep IAT's at the TB more consistent over a long pull.
I personally prefer the black tar heroin PCP mix injection straight to the jugular...👍
B16 head flow bench numbers. Sohc motors rip.. you can rip em up to 15 20psi or more. Its all about the fueling and tune.
Like to see holley x or xmax. Does self tunning work better than having a tuner tune it?
2nd this
Thanks for the great videos Rich! CX Racing is low budget.... but not bad kits
There quality is very shoddy.....
Their*
popomomo12 :Lol. I am guilty too. My English Epic Fail.
@@popomomo12 Im sure if you over spin the turbo is doomed for failure......remember low budget
@@PVW4EVER i can agree for sure
Let's see some 12v vr6 stuff!!
Thanks a lot for these Honda vídeos!!! 😃👏👏👏 really cool
D series hero! Thanks for making this video
Excellent!! I love B, D, and K series stuff. Have you ever tested any 2J stuff? Those NA engines can take a lot of boost!
I enjoy the older Honda stuff. Show some more B & D series
Please do a 7th gen d17 tubo. Rumor says the cant handle like 400hp.
I straight up want to see you max out Maxpeedingrods cheap universal turbos.
Everyone has done turbos on Honda's 4 cylinder engine but the 6 cylinder motors are hardlytouched. I would like 6 cylinder stuff.
I haven't found them if you have done it but would like to see some boost builds on toyota engines.
How about a LS factory ported head shootout? From guys like Texas speed vs Katech vs Advanced Induction.
A truly budget build? Sign me up!
You haven’t tested an Aussie Barra
Test a Barra!
Something on the ecotec engine, they have a great bottom end and currently the fastest 4cyl ¼mile on a stock block and head
eBay turbo kit vs Jackson racing supercharger on Single Cam Vtec
Wow 280whp on factory D-Series rod bolts.... that's pretty high!
Let's see how ported heads affect power and torque, bit by bit, do the throat, then port match, then 3 angle valve seats, cut back valves, bigger inlet valves etc......rather than just the V8 stuff where a different head is bolted on.
Thanks dad! Id love to see any import engine tests. 2z rb 13b etc.
You should do a d16 vitara build detailed and push it to the limit!
Would love to see you do a NA Subaru sohc ej251 engine with a turbo
I'd like to see you guys push the limits a 2.7l ecoboost
Right on
Bolt-ons or boost? Both. Both is good.
I love your other guys videos. It would be great if you could expand it further, into other odd ball import and domestic performance engines. Say the GM v6s or the hot Toyota 4cyls.
More b series stuff pretty please
I know they are very popular with the younger crowd especially but I always wondered why do people put so much time money and effort into a Honda when you can put it into a Chevy V8?
Make a 10k rpm motor. Ways to beef up the block to handle more boost/ power.
I want to see a 1000hp d series. What ever you have to do to make it happen.
Wheres the turbo specs you spoke of? Giving A/R numbers dont tell much. Inducer and exducer dimensions would tell much more.
