Few pilots understand how clever and thought out the engineering of this plane is , especially the landing gear . The fact the swing arm axle is brought to the center of the fuselage a hard landing releases less energy into the airframe and more energy into the shock / strut due to its shallower angle of incidence out to the axle ...The result .. fuselage shock on Carbon Cubs etc is mostly absorbed by the tire causing bounce whereas energy punched into the shock / strut on this shallower angle is rebound dampened ... The overall result .. plants much better than all cubs that have landing gear attached to the fuse side ... beats the carbon cub or any other cub by a considerable margin ... The Swiss figured this out decades ago with the Pilatus Porter and most Americans have no idea why its a better system .. Most Americans think the side mounting of the swing arm is optimal and have no clue what bringing it to the center achieves

Changing angle of strut to wing? How about geometry change of wing attachments.

Nice to see that GARMIN used a traditional looking slip display versus that trapezoid thingamabob on the G1000 PFD. Overall I enjoyed the very simple explanation of this interesting taildragger.

Beautiful bird! I hope to see it in person in the very near future. I really love the Rans -7, but this thing has me thinking. Can you do another video with it in action and show its performance throughout the entire flight envelope? I’d love to see it in a typical level cruse configuration and see what speeds and fuel burn you’re seeing and also see it in full STOL mode.

Garmin InReach is NOT a PLB. It uses the Iridium satellite network like a satellite phone. Rescue would be on its way much quicker with a real PLB like an ACR ResQLink View or similar which transmits on the COSPAS-SARSAT system and there is no monthly subscription. It is essentially a pocket-sized 406 Mhz ELT that won't be confused as just a really hard landing. It can't hurt to own both. The InReach can be useful to communicate via text for anything non actual emergency but if it's a life or death situation search and rescue is mobilized much quicker by a signal from a PLB.

@Jimmy De'Souza I reckon it would be next to impossible to land anywhere in the "back country" without running some hillwalker over during the landing. You would also be vilified for causing any number of 911 type phone calls as people erroneously assumed you had crashed...

Has anyone strapped on a set of super stol wings onto a piper cub? That would be an interesting set up.

115-125ish mph iirc, I flew rev2 with the 152 wing... don't remember what this 172 wing version was exactly.. these seem to land as slow as a cub no problem, but definitely are faster! sweet bird!!

@@GravityKnightFlying some guy in Alaska is building a 4 place cub (SxS obviously) pretty cool...and Murphy in BC Canada has nice planes...I was out there visited the factory and apparently the guy who designed the wing for the beaver/otter allowed him to use the same design for the Moose wing. pretty cool also.
