Trent, thank you for the profile videos of some of your friends aircraft, I'm really enjoying them. Any chance you could do a comprehensive profile on the Freedom Fox? I would love to hear your opinion on the 915 after 4 years of running it, and numbers you're seeing in all the different types of flying you've been doing. I'm also curious about the maintenance over the last 4 years on the 915. Thanks again for your fantastic videos!!!
You guys are fortunate to have access to all this stuff, we here down under have little in the way of parts and manufacturing for high end experimental parts.
Can't say enough good about BD turnkey engines. I didn't know he did anything aviation related but had a great experience buying a turnkey LS engine, harness and tuned computer from him. Now I'm getting ideas for a plane project...
@@TrentonPalmer given the stance of the plane.. I was waiting for a bit of a run down on the undercarriage.. it IS afterall nearly as important as the wing.. for stol
The motor was a motor bike motor. The r1. Then moved to sleds, I dreamed 6 years ago helping build a kit 7 to put a apex / r1 motor in a plane. And now here I watch it being done, feels like a dream come true. Awesome content, still my dream to have my own.
Mountain biking with a group is a blast, I wish I could experience flying with a group. That would have to be awesome. Just flying wherever I want to is my dream.
I'd like to know how it compares to a more traditional build. That would be a big factor if you want to land at home and have neighbors that you have to fly over
I had an R1 motorcycle with a similar engine design, most of them were on the track at high RPM's and the valves were in spec when checked at 20,000 miles. That motor isn't stressing at 8500 and it's reasonably quiet with the right exhaust. With a full exhaust system and a dyno tune my stock motor made 180 Hp.
@@GrizzAxxemann They do sound great, I'd love to see an R1 crossplane engine in a plane. Sounds like a throaty V8. As far as I know it's only in the motorcycle, not in any sleds or jet skis as they don't need the traction advantage.
For price. I got a steal. I bought an Avid flier. The performance is very similar to a kitfox. Bought the plane and the trailer for 10k. 86HP VW engine. Cruise is nice and take off is really nice as well. Put around 1-2k into it. Burns 3.5gallons per hour. Couldn’t be more happy.
What a climate shocker. Going from a frozen snow covered high desert, to a warm green savannah in the space of a few dozen miles (and minutes). If only the Donner Party had had such an ability.
Friend of mine has Slepcev Storch STOL. He swaped normaly used Rotax 912 with Yamaha motorcycle engine. You could change gears mid air to reduce engine RPM. Result was 150hp instead of 90hp Rotax had, while consumption fell from 18 to 8 liters compared to Rotax.
Aviation... standard rule of thumb..... 10.5 HP per gallon of fuel burned. Air resistance is a function of density altitude. If your buddy was burning 8 liters... that's a little over 2 gallons an hour and 22 or so HP. Not much will stay in the air with 22 HP, unless the cruise speed is below stall speed.
Man my dream just got further away but im still gonna keep in in heart. 90k is a ways away for me. Thanks for the info though I really appreciate it. Ill keep playing the lottery and will it to myself. Always enjoy anything about flying or information on flying love yall stay safe👊🙏😎

Hi you are talking about more lift with this wing ,lift more payloads ,more fuel for long distance, I'm in Manitoba and sometimes we have to travel long ways?
Just as all us Rotax 912 fliers finally get the legacy engine guys to quit calling it "a snowmachine engine," the Yamaha conversion comes along! We also got them, the legacy engine crowd, kinda used to high RPM's, like 5,000 or so, the Yamaha is going to blow their minds!
Nissan's ZEOD RC is a 3 cylinder engine 1.5 liter turbocharged direct injection I believe. It puts out 400 h.p. & 300 ft lbs of torque. The entire engine & accessories weighs 88 lbs with turbocharger exhaust everything. It's dry sump. Check it out it would we great for airplanes. It was made for the 24 hrs car race, so it's very durable & reliable.
Mike Patey was making a thing with double leading edge slots on Draco a while ago, but haven't heard anything about planes with that recently - has anyone taken that up, and noticed the benefits ?
Imagine using a motorcycle engine with the gears, as far as I understand you could trim for low speed performance at takeoff and just shift up for cruise. This should work until the blade tips start to hit transsonic/supersonic speeds. But also it would allow for much lower engine RPM at cruise reducing fuel-burn.
Why aren't there more motorcycle-powered experimentals out there? It seems like there would be a gold mine of wrecked Hayabusas ready to power these planes.
This plane has a bit of draco looks other than the color. If it was red everyone would at first glance think of draco. Especially the take off it's so much like draco.
Brian’s channel is great, he did a really good job on his build series.

A lot of them don’t handle extended high RPM runs like a plane requires, and the power reduction (gearbox) is always a challenge
It’s simple. Motorcycles have transmissions built into the block. The snowmobile engine does not.
