    Very nice aircraft.
    Very knowledgeable pilot.
    He’s probably the safest piece of equipment on board.

    Thanks Erik and Mark for a very nice M20F review. I hadn’t realized Aerostar had owned Mooney at one time. Nice airplane and Mark seems like a very competent pilot.

    Nice airplane. I’ve wanted a Mooney from the first time i saw them. Good speed for the fuel burn. They’re well made, with the exception of the wet wing design which ultimately will cost some money to remedy either with a reseal or new bladders. Either proposition will set you back quite a bit.

      This panel works very well because everything is directly in front of the pilot. It's more difficult for people flying from the right side, but it was designed for single-pilot operations.

    So many questions answered in just 25 min. Regarding ownership, I've heard that Beech cost about twice as much as a Piper to own, buy parts and maintain (comparing an Arrow to a Sierra for example), where would a similar equipped and age Mooney fall into this range? Thanks much!

    • @markdanielson9407
      @markdanielson9407 5 лет назад +3

      The Mooney landing gear is very simple, and never has leaks because there are no hydraulics other than brake lines. An annual inspection generally runs 1500.00 plus any work that needs to be done. The price range for a Mooney varies as much as the winter temperature in Texas. It all depends on the equipment, time on the engine, paint, interior, etc., but they generally start in the mid 30s and go up from there. The best buys are generally estate sales, or from people who have lost their medical. Beechcraft tend to cost a lot more because of the brand name. Mooney parts are more comparable to Piper and Cessna.

    Just curious how tall the pilot is? I’m not sure I would like being so close to the controls. But I’m 6’-3” so I may have to move back anyway. Great video. This guy knows his plane.

    • @markdanielson9407
      @markdanielson9407 5 лет назад +2

      I'm 5'10, but it's the sitting height that matters. I'm way forward because I have a long torso and shorter legs. I recently had a 6'8" passenger who is all legs and he was on the back notch. The rudder pedals are fixed almost at the firewall, so a 6 foot pilot with average legs would be quite comfortable. Yes, cavernous is relative, and what I referred to in the video was cavernous -- compared to the C and E models, which had 5 less inches in the rear seat. :)

    The fuel selector is at your feet? What was the designer thinking?

    • @markdanielson9407
      @markdanielson9407 5 лет назад

      I think every Mooney owner feels the same about the fuel selector location. It's incorporated with the gascolator drain, located at the lowest point. Beyond that, I cannot explain their logic.

    • @teejayevans
      @teejayevans 5 лет назад

      Next model changed the fuel selector to the front middle, and emergency landing gear crank to the middle of both seats.
      He likes to try to have his knees bent, that’s why his sitting so close. If you sit like in a sports car, with legs extended, you will have plenty of room.

    • @markdanielson9407
      @markdanielson9407 5 лет назад

      @@teejayevans, from my experience, bent knees are necessary for full rudder movement. Though most of the time it's unnecessary, stiff crosswinds can demand full rudder. The same applies for multi-engine aircraft where full rudder may be necessary in the event of engine failure. While I keep my seat at the second notch from the front, this seat will fit most people comfortably.

    I would liked to have seen him check his controls- that must be a short, short throw on the elevator

    • @markdanielson9407
      @markdanielson9407 5 лет назад +1

      Michael, the aileron movement is about 1/2 that of a C172. The ailerons are very effective, and need little input. The elevator movement is typical of Pipers and Cessnas, extending well into your lap at full nose-up. The flaps are long, skinny and very effective, but significant nose-up elevator trim must be added when the flaps are lowered.

    It literally astonishes me that so many Pilots are willing to "Bet their Life" on those "All Glass" panels!
    All it takes is just one "Random Static Discharge" to kill the microprocessor! And then YOUR ENTIRE PANEL GOES BLANK!
    And YES! This does happen!
    I use extensive modern electronics, but I NEVER fly any airplane that has no redundancy.
    Give me at least some "round dials"! These are VASTLY MORE RELIABLE then your microprocessor controlled wonders.

    • @paulwright7239
      @paulwright7239 3 года назад +1

      So I've been watching flying videos like these for years, maybe > a decade. Funny that I've never seen that happen on any of them. Not saying it doesn't, but there are so many advantages to modern avionics that calling steam gauges fed by vacuum pumps and gyroscopes "vastly more reliable" (in ALL CAPS no less), is really a bit laughable.

    • @markdanielson9407
      @markdanielson9407 2 года назад +1

      Every glass instrument has power redundancy. On my two unrelated alternator issues, the Aspen units reverted to their backup power, but the standby SAI340 was never affected. Whenever an electrical power failure occurs, there are few alternatives. Either land at the nearest suitable airfield, turn their power off until needed or continue if the weather is clear. If I was IFR and experienced any kind of electrical issue in any single engine airplane, I would land immediately. VFR, I've flown until the Aspen backup batteries ran out of power to see how long they lasted. The Aspen PFD has always lasted at least 45 minutes and the MFD at least an hour. I flew airliners around the world for over two decades and only had one oddity where the glass display functioned, but lost its color. During my military career flying fighters, I experienced numerous steam gauge attitude instrument failures, one of which required landing on the wing of another fighter from a Ground Controlled Approach in 100/1/4 weather. As the saying goes, flying is inherently dangerous, but by choosing the most reliable instruments, staying current and not taking unnecessary risks is the best way to avoid mishaps.

    Beautiful plane! Thanks for the video. You seem very knowledgeable. It may be splitting hairs to say it but, according to Bill Wheat, a 42 year Mooney Employee, there were in-flight wing failures with wood-winged Mooneys so, the idea that a Mooney has NEVER experienced a wing failure is apparently not true (according to Bill). I don't know if it's a true statement to say that a metal-winged Mooney has never experienced a wing failure. Source: www.mooneypilots.com/mapalog/woodwing.html
    Never the less, my next airplane will be a Mooney, F or J or K probably...

    Richer mixture=higher CHT? I don’t think so.

    • @markdanielson9407
      @markdanielson9407 5 лет назад +2

      I didn't think so, either, but the Mooney experts told me this and it's backed up by my CHT. The CHT on this IO360A-1A engine runs 20 to 40 degrees higher with an extra 1.5 to 2 gph fuel flow in cruise.
