    DO YOU NEED A LICENSE TO FLY AN ULTRALIGHT AIRCRAFT IN THE US?
    FAR (Federal Aviation Regulations) Part 103.7(b) states:
    Notwithstanding any other section pertaining to airman certification, operators of ultralight vehicles are not required to meet any aeronautical knowledge, age, or experience requirements to operate those vehicles or to have airman or medical certificates.
    So in real people talk, NO, you don’t a license, certificate, or any knowledge or experience to operate an ultralight. But we HIGHLY recommend that you take a basic ground school courses and flight instruction before you take to the skies.
    We offer a 3-4 day “Path to Solo” flight training course. Call or write us for more info!
    Anyone can fly an airplane, it’s landing one that very few know how to do.
    -Unknown wise man
    Here we go again with the legal jargan, FAR Part 103.1 states:
    For the purposes of this part, an ultralight vehicle is a vehicle that:
    (a) Is used or intended to be used for manned operation in the air by a single occupant;
    (b) Is used or intended to be used for recreation or sport purposes only;
    (c) Does not have any U.S. or foreign airworthiness certificate; and
    (d) If unpowered, weighs less than 155 pounds; or
    (e) If powered:
    (1) Weighs less than 254 pounds empty weight, excluding floats and safety devices which are intended for deployment in a potentially catastrophic situation;
    (2) Has a fuel capacity not exceeding 5 U.S. gallons;
    (3) Is not capable of more than 55 knots calibrated airspeed at full power in level flight; and
    (4) Has a power-off stall speed which does not exceed 24 knots calibrated airspeed.
    HOW MUCH CAN I EXPECT TO SPEND?
    Expect to spend anywhere between $11,700-$28,500 for a brand spanking new Badland kit. You can expect to spend another $2000-$4500 for the firewall forward parts unless you have an engine laying around.
    Then on the contrary, $35,000 will get you one of the baddest bush style ultralights in existence. It all depends on engine choice, instrumentation, and other options of course.
    Who wouldn’t love a full titanium airframe, 21″ bush tired, 8″ suspension travel, 60HP ultralight that can take you anywhere you want to go?
    DO I NEED A MECHANIC TO DO AN ANNUAL INSPECTION?
    Annual inspection cost you ask? Where we’re going Marty, we don’t calculate annual inspection costs.
    Since ultralights aren’t registered aircraft, you don’t need an airworthiness certificate. FAR Part 103 states:
    (a) Notwithstanding any other section pertaining to certification of aircraft or their parts or equipment, ultralight vehicles and their component parts and equipment are not required to meet the airworthiness certification standards specified for aircraft or to have certificates of airworthiness.
    Does this mean you should jump in your Badland every Saturday Willy Nilly and go zipping around? Um, no. We recommend learning how to do basic regular maintenance on your craft and doing a thorough inspection on your own annually. If you’re not feeling confident, give us a call. We’ll walk you through it or even pay you a visit and give you a hand if needed.

    This aircraft shows that with proper engineering, Part 103 is no obstacle. Such an impressive looking plane, this F3.

    It was great to talk with Chris at the show. Seriously this is the most impressive of the Part 103 planes I've seen in this type, and the video doesn't really do justice to how clean and well laid out the aircraft was from spinner to tailwheel. I'm super excited to see these taking off and I look forward to seeing some in person. Might even have to get one with a little Verner on it as an E-AB runabout.

    He has done a remarkable job that boy... Quite impressed. It has an extremely professional look about it and you can see he has spent a lot of time in solid works getting it perfect. Come on FAA.. Give 103 an increase payload for another 5 gallons. If the price is right he is going to have to reduce that delivery time yet that's a nice problem to have.

    • @mikecorleone6797

      Paul Dutton even 7 gallons of fuel to give at least a solid 3 hours of flight time would be nice.. at that point it could be used as a commuter plane or for sight seeing.. strap a camera under it and fly over historic or scenic sights n broadcast it

    • @harpandharley
      @harpandharley 5 лет назад

      Of course, raising the fuel capacity knocks it out of the Ultralight category and puts it into the ranks of E-AB aircraft. No problem there. The various options allow you to pick exactly what you want. I noticed your website mentioned an upcoming 65 horse power 4-stroke engine option that would put it solidly into the E-AB category. I'm really impressed!

      I would hate for the FAA to revisit the Part 103 regulations. Part 103 accomplishes what it needs to do (hang gliders, paragliders, and ultralights) without the complications of licensing and additional requirements. Look at all the regulations for drone operators. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that the FAA / Congress could rescind Part 103 altogether under the right circumstances.

    This Badland kit plane has to be the nicest most plane appearing "part 103 legal" aircraft of any of the kits available today. It looks like a real outfit clone but yet is Still a true ultra light requiring No Pilots License ! Great job very professional kit with solid performance numbers. It will be very interesting to see where these new FAA Sport Plane regulations coming by 2020 take us.

      I was thinking the same thing. I think I kinda lean towards the merlin personally because its all metal. Im being dragged in a few different directions right now. And the 1 that keeps winning is biting the bullet and getting a light sport cert. Because if you look at the merlin psa its almost the same price as the lite for in my opinion twice the plane

    • @scottwatrous
      @scottwatrous 5 лет назад

      I agree, I want one with a Verner on it. There again, with the Verner I'm pretty-sure you'd be too heavy for Part 103: the Verner 3V is approx 17kg heavier than the little Thor 250. That's not so bad because I'm confident that Verner will pull its weight and then some, and based on the Legal Eagles flying around it'll sound great and look good doing it. But it does take it to being a different class of airplane and costing an extra 3-4k

    There is a bloke in Germany that has managed to make a frame using carbon tubing. Not sure but think it is a mini Corsair replica(found it - www.jh-aircraft.de, however the technique he uses to join tube to tube is new. Not sure if it lends itself to fast construction yet clearly no welding involved so could be faster construction but above all it is uber strong with all junctions in compression whilst being very light. The frame construction method might lend itself to the Badlands and facilitate reduced build times. It's worth checking out I think.

    The cruise speed should be whatever puts the wing in an efficient AOA. I think the small Polini has to be run at high RPM, but you'd like to turn it down to half-power but then the aircraft would probably be mushing.

    • @badlandaircraft9504

You will come. LOL Let's do this!!!!!!!!!!!! I see the wing is very Dragonfly inspired, tried tested and proven by our Aussie friends and Danny Lang my tug pilot. In fact, with the bigger motor, could aerotow HG pilots up and maybe compete with in the HG community with the Dragonfly for that purpose. Sell a lot more kits for this reason. ehh?
