- www.ultralightf... - Legal Eagle Part 103 Legal Ultralight Aircraft by Leonard Milholland - produced in kit form by J&N Bolding Enterprises of Baytown, Texas and intended for amateur construction.
The Legal Eagle is so named because it is capable of being built in legal compliance with the United States FAR 103 Ultralight Vehicles regulations, even when equipped with a four stroke engine.
The Legal Eagle features an open cockpit and is powered by a 30 hp (22 kW) Half VW engine.
The design features a fuselage of welded 4130 steel tubing, mated to an all-wood wing made from spruce. The struts and tail surfaces are made from 6061 T6 aluminium tubing. The flying surfaces are covered with doped aircraft fabric. The rear fuselage is normally left as an open truss structure to save weight and to ensure that the aircraft does not exceed the FAR 103 maximum speed of 55 knots (102 km/h; 63 mph). Like the fuselage, the taildragger landing gear is sprung steel.
The aircraft has been developed into several variants of the basic design including the XL version for larger pilots and a two-seat ultralight trainer and Light-sport aircraft.[6][7][8]

"6-9 months, if you're taking any longer than that, you're messing around" Got to love that remark :)
mike o thats what I'm saying. This guy sounds a treasure.
Yup
Dunno what I like more: the plane or listening to this guy and his moxie!
I've have been fortunate enough to be able to talk to Leonard a few times. What a great guy!
This is what building and flying your own airplane back yard without having to mortgage your home or without having an education in engineering to build.
Jesus Christ, I really shouldn't have watched this. Damn I'm on a mission now!
This legal eagle looks like an amazing aircraft
I believe the time has come for the 103 breed of aircraft to switch to electric.
They are so wonderful machines, and they will become even more magical.
Just like the RC airplanes did.
From a technical standpoint, you are probably right, or soon will be, as batteries improve. But regulators move very slowly. This plane was called the *legal* eagle because some sacrifices were made to stay 103-compliant. www.wired.com/2015/09/blame-faa-blunder-lack-electric-airplanes/ is mostly talking about slightly larger planes, but the same resistance is there. The only thing the FAA has said about electric motors is that batteries will count against the already-tight structural weight instead of the fuel allotment.
Thats why he is in the ultralight hall of fame
Leonard I just bought the plans and the build has begun.........I've named it already, color picked out, and I have a flow chart for the production line... my wife thinks I've lost my mind ( she is not a pilot ) but just wait 'til I fly out the shop door........ Thanks for all your hard work making up the plans and posting this Video.
Sorry the video is not Leonard's - it was done by The Ultralight Flyer Video Magazine
GOOD VIDEO !
Don't stress...Your wife would be mad if you painted all her flower pots Copper Red...Build your plane...Enjoy your life....Cheers 🍻!!!!...
Wow! How fun, this would be. Hope the poor fella's shoulder is okay now. Fly safe, Sir.
love this plane
I like how the aileron controls are on the outside on the strut.
CHOPPERGIRL's AIRWAR i
His Double Eagle and Cabin Eagle designs seem like the most economical two place planes out there. Both are really two place versions of the ultralight in this video.
It’s a go kart for the sky Superb!
WHAT A NEIGHBOUR!
I am a 60 year old former private pilot who used to own a Cessna 172 with a couple of other guys. Unfortunately I became disabled, lost my pilots license and eventually my job. I have been thinking about an ultralight aircraft for a long time. I am physically able to fly such a small plane (actually I'm physically able to fly a general aviation aircraft, but can't pass the FAA physical) I would like to get into something that does not require a license and doesn't cost over $10,000. I would really like to get back in the air while I still can. Any ideas on where to look and how to get started would be greatly appreciated.
It tells how to contact in the video at the end you can email or call him plans are 50$ good luck man !
Gerald Scott , where are you located?
@FooBar Maximus Anything that meets FAR Part 103 can be built by whomever with whatever materials available. So yes, if you know of a local handyman or mechanic that would be willing and able to build this you can absolutely hand them the plans and let them tear into it. Any aircraft manufacturer or FBO in your area that even would be wiling to undertake this would almost certainly charge you far more than the average person would think of as a sane amount of money. So you're stuck with Billy Bob or Juan or whoever you have locally.
Good luck to you sir.
You can become ultralight instructor. Consider that.
This looks like a blast. I love airplanes. If only I weren't so afraid of heights.
Rick West I am afraid of heights, and I am a licensed pilot
I once had to call the fire department to help get my dad back down a light pole on his airport. He struggled to get up there to change the bulb, and then froze and could not come back down. He was a flight instructor, and an aerobatics instructor at the time.
Yeah - if everything is working as it should, an airplane cannot fall out of the sky. As long as the wings and tail are still attached, you're gliding. If the engine is still working, you're flying.
I'm afraid of heights too, but knowing this about aircraft made my fear of flying disappear.
Thanks Leonard, love the concept. If you want to fly, just do it.
appears stable enough to lend me some
This is a awesome aircraft...10lbs..! And Flyability!
I can just throw on carb heat when decending🚜. Used to work. Nice little planes.
Простой в конструции и прекрасный в полете. Отлично!
Love this plane!!
Very nice 👌👍 machine
Outstanding little aircraft
Looks like a fun little bird.
What a great idea not to cut the VW crankcase.
CONGRATULATIONS, I LIKED A LOT OF THAT AIRPLANE, CUT A FOUR CYLINDER VW ENGINE AND TRANSFORM IN TWO ...
I'm gonna build an XL someday
Cool guy, thank you
Como hago para obtener un Curso para volar estas pequeñas aviones o comprar una aquí en México??
The author tell me the characteristics of the screw
Any engine may stop at anytime especially old ones. What about these small aircrafts? Are they death boxes?
The 4 stroke VW is pretty reliable if built properly. Also, the glide ratio of the plane is pretty good so if you have good pilot skills you should be able to land it in the event of an engine stoppage or failure. That said, you are defying gravity so any safety margin you can build in will be helpful.
anyone know the price range on parts for this size build?
3-5k depending on your scrounging abilities.
Cost me $3600ish in '15
Kyle Smith for the whole build!?
Well the vw to steal the engine from can be as much as 40k:)
Assuming you will buy most of your parts new (from places like A/C Spruce or Wicks), you will spend a good $3500 or more on the airframe. If you buy a ready-built motor and prop, etc, it will run you another $4000. But, if you are good at scrounging stuff, and can build your own motor, you can build one a bit cheaper.
I love it. I wonder how hard it would be to mold the framing out of carbon fiber?
It would not be hard at all. But it would defeat the purpose of being cheap
@@pmac7527 Yes, but you could make the fuselage super light and then use the weight savings to hang a more powerful engine on it for us folks who live at higher altitudes,
Heck...!!! Anythang is possible if you throw enough money after it...Guy took a RV 6, I think, and made a twin outta it...Guy built his own single pilot B 17 bomber....Look at all Burt Rutan's designs...Weird, but, they fly....sooo...
What is the weight limit for the pilot?
Any guide or ebook to build one of those?
love parasol airplanes
how much power is it. good job
It is a 1/2 VW engine - approximately 35 HP.

Link to ultralight flyer does not have a link for the plans to the Legal Eagle, just several "subscribe now!" links to the videos of other aircraft...How do I get the plans and parts?
Vist the website listed in the video.

Why not add it to the description of the video?
👍 👍 👍
If he shot new videos for the plans it would be better.
Was this interview at Sun-N-fun 2017 by any chance?
Interview was done a number of years ago at Sun N Fun.

This would be GREAT to about the neighbors with! Haha
What was the ul similar to this but your legs straddled the seat and were out in the wind? Skybike??????
There are two the Airbike now available from Jordan Lake Marine and AeroMax from Team Mini Max.
The Ultralight Flyer
Thanks, Is a pilot ready to fly at 280 Lbs do-able?
Should be no problem with a Rotax 447 or the Hirth F23 50 HP.
The Ultralight Flyer.

Airbike
what engine you are using
1/2 vw

good
Keep in mind this was 17 years ago so parts may not be available and prices may have gone up or laws have been made.
Lucas Smith no new laws have been made. Its still a legal part 103. The engines are still sold, as are the plans.
I have a feeling the L.E. will be around for a long time to come.
bluestudio67 that's amazing to hear
Leonard is my neighbor. You can definitely still get the plans. Prices have not changed.
Alguem tem a planta de montagem para me passar!
Like it
Plans are $190.00 not $50.00.
PLANS were $50.00 WHEN the video was shot.
@@ultralightnews
Still $50 today.
