I know right? Whenever I just barely hit my head, I think I gave myself a concussion and therefore brain damage. It really stresses me out. So this is making me feel a lot more reassurance, as you said.
(Male 56yrs) Thank you for your video and your previous one. On Sunday 30th I was doing some cleaning at home and I ended up knocking the front left side (eyebrow area) of my head on the top of a wooden bed post. I was stunned for 5 to 10 seconds and then was able to carry on with the cleaning. For the remainer of the day I didn't think too much of it. As I recall the rest of the day ran as normal. Monday I got up and went to work. Tuesday I woke up and was aware of a pain on the left side of my head. A headache type pain. I got ready for work, took 2 ibuprofen and went to work. Wednesday I woke up and again I was aware of the pain on the left side of my head. I then started to make connections to what happened on Sunday. Again I took 2 ibuprofen before I left for work. While at work a couple of incidents occurred. I could describe them as a result of loss of focus. When I got home I noticed I did not have much of an appitite. I did eat something small but the thought or smell of food gave me a sick feeling. The pain in my head became worse, I felt nousia and sensitive to bright light and noise. I took 2 ibuprofen and went to sleep. Thursday morning was very different. The pain in my head was very intense (could describe it as a throbbing headache) i felt sick. I had to move around very slowly and i became mindful of my steps. There was no way I could have gone to work. I got ready and prepared to travel to the A&E department (emergecy room). After I got ready it took me over an hour to mentally prepare myself for the journey. I felt so low and depressed as well as having this throbbing headache. After an hour journey and a four hour wait I described to a doctor what had happened. He example and gave me a few physical tests. He said it appears I have sustained a mild concussion. He gave me a leaflet about head Injuries and what symptoms to look out for major concussions such as a bleed on the brain. Thankfully I have none of them symptoms. I have not been able to go to work. With the help of 2 ibuprofen before I went to bed I was able to sleep for about 4 or 5 hours. After I woke up I was quickly made aware of the throbbing in my head with a terrible feeling of nausea. This has not changed for the last 4 hours. I seem to get some relief in the afternoon/ evening time. The mornings are just terrible. I am able to take care of myself and prepare simple meals but there is no way I can even think about going to work. I honestly believe I would collapse before I got there. It's been a week since my knock to my head and I feel like I'm in a very dark place. I have watched a few videos about concussions and I am hoping I am one of the 70% who recovers within 3 to 4 weeks. I can assure anybody out there that a concussion can be a dreadful condition to have. An added problem is that it is not visible. I have also noticed some watery discharge from my left eye and nostril. I hope this information helps. Thank you again for the video.
@@bladerunner9646 thanks for the reply. i’m happy to hear that ur back to normal and this gives me at least a bit of hope. it’s been about 6 weeks and i still dont feel like myself bcz of the headaches and brain fog. it feels like im in a bad dream i look around and the world scene around me feels different. but i will hear u out with the patience. any tips?
Thank you so much. I hit my head, it didn't hurt or made me have concussion symptoms, but me feeling my brain "move" made my anxiety skyrocket. Your videos helped me understand what happened and be a little more calm. Thank you!
I come to these videos everytime i bump ly head to remind myself my crazy symptoms aren’t gonna come back & make me go insane & its all anxiety! I see a Dr that dr cameron trained weekly ive had a handful of concussions from golf cart crash, baseball skull fracture etc etc! Thank you for this content! Im sure its saved alot of people afraid of CTE
I'm a teacher in a rough high school.5'1 at 110 lbs 58 years I usually yell my way through a hall. "Watch for the short lady, she bites" Large students not lisyening started a shoving fight just as I passed by and shovedme hard. I went airborne, landed on my hip and bounced my head off the floor then slid headfirst into a locker. (I'm sure there is a tik tok video of my flight) immediately stunned, head and back hurtikecrazy. The EMS arrives and I can't get my words out. It's been 5 days and I'm still struggling the speech and having bona fide panic attacks. MY Headache andneck ache are bad. CT shows no stroke or concussion but my doctors are worried.
Wonderful series of videos. I am a neurologist, so I see a lot of head injuries. I have a suggestion for studies. I find that significant head injuries (bleeding on a scan) are less likely in cognitively normal people than the cognitively impaired. I very seldom see blood from a ground level fall in a cognitively normal adult unless the patient hits something on the way down. What’s going on here? That being said, concussions are a major cause of worsening in many neurodegenerative diseases, both before and after symptom onset. Thanks again for your good work.
Hi doctor! What do you say about self punch to the temple? I assume it produces angular acceleration. Can an amateur's self punch to his own temple surpass the concussion threshold? Or cause Sub-concussion (micro concussion)? last week I punched myself around the temple 2-3 times due to anger. I didn't feel anyway dazed, confused, light sensitivity, ear ringing, or problems with conversation. Only things i noticed are some sleep issues difficulties 1 day later. And probably an increase in my PRE-EXISTING migraine and PRE-EXISTING dizziness.
Thanks so much for empowering me. A power assist door slammed shut on me. This happened 6 months ago. My symptoms are still prominent. I difficulties are with balance, Vision, noise and light sensitivity, fine motor, cognitive deficits, general brain fog and chronic fatigue and pain. I look forward to learning more from the next episodes- Merci.
50 year old female co-ed 12" softball player. I play 1st base. Fly ball hit in my direction. While looking up to catch the fly, my male pitcher collided with me, impacting my sternum. He fell on top of me, my back and head hit the ground. Knocked the wind out of me and caused pain in my sternum (I thought he cracked my ribs). After about 10 minutes I got up, was able to say how many outs we had and finish this game as well as a 2nd game, running and sliding throughout. BTW-I did catch and hang on to the fly ball 👍 I didn't notice concussion symptoms until the next morning. They were REALLY bad. extreme light sensitivity, fatigue, headache, etc. This happened 3 years ago. I struggled with symptoms for 6 months, however towards the end I learned that I was dealing with rebound headaches due to excessive over the counter pain meds I'd been taking to combat the headaches. The withdrawal from that was horrible! I'm happy to say, I'm recovered and back on the ball field. Now when a fly ball is hit to me I scream I GOT IT, I GOT IT, I GOT IT!!!! No further head injuries since. 🙂
also, I found you via your Tua video. This series is very informative. I wish I had them 3 years ago! I also wish I was smart enough to take myself out of the games, I'm sure I didn't do myself any favors by continuing to play. Thank you for this series!!
6-24-24 I was picking up some trash and as I was raising back up I fainted and fell backwards and the back of my head slammed against the concrete floor of parking garage. I spent 7 hours in emergency at Kaiser Cadillac and did several blood test and a CAT Scan and they said that they couldn't find anything critical. I followed up on 6-28-24 with my primary dr. and he re-ran all the test and concluded that I had a severe concussion. He took me off work until mid July and will re-evaluate me then. I will feel unsure of my equilibrium and sometimes can't focus. Thank you for posting these video, because of them i know what I am warring with and what weaons I need to fight with. Thank you for helping me understand my daughter's concussion & PCS. It's been a searching journey of understanding BTI as I've watched the dynamics of her family unit disentigration. My deep thanks to you. I pray for more research, awareness, proactive treatments & family support.
As of January 2023 I am 70 1/2 years old. I suffered a fall 10 days go and hit my head, suffering a concussion. At day 10 I was starting to feel better when I mildly bumped my head and the symptoms came back at a level of right after the fall. Now I had another concussion 16 months ago in a car accident and shook that one off. I've probably had 20 to 25 concussions in my life but never felt any effects from them that lasted more than a day. So I have to assume that age and possibly the volume is finally catching up with me.
I am a 24 year old caucasian male from Scandinavia who fell on a bike with medium speed. I did not wear a helmet and hit the right front of my forehead on the sidewalk. I was bleeding from my head and got a lot of scrapes and a huge black eye. I luckily did not bleed from the inside of my head but bled from my nose and mouth. I fractured my skull from top to bottom but did not need any operation. I did not have any loss of memory or any "retardation". Just energy drop, confusion and anxiety. I do have a double vision (the accident happened about 3 weeks ago) but it is getting better now. All the doctors have been saying that I was very lucky.
Hi! Since you're responding to some people and said in your video, I thought I'll try my luck! I'm 25 year old female, I had a nightmare, and while sleeping on my stomach I tossed my head side to side with a lot of force, and overextended my neck as much as I could beyond its normal range to one side during this. It sounds ridiculous but its just something I did during a nightmare. I woke up with a sore neck I couldn't move thought it would go away but it than spread to lower part of my head on the same side, week after that dissipated and I had sharp headache sensations across my scalp and had high sensitivity to light and first migraine. I never had headaches or migraines before. But after that for about 5 months, slightest wind, my period, stress, odd neck posture/movement would cause headache/sensitivity to light. I had extreme anxiety- and I was just a positive happy person before the incident. After I tried physio for 4 sessions my symptoms went down 80%. I'm just wondering if this could have been a concussion because when I called my doctor right after the injury they thought it is a pulled muscle/tension headache. But this had a lot of symptoms afterwards, once for a few days I had tingling and stabbing pain on y arms and hands but that is gone now. Watching your concussion video I did definitely accelerate my head and hit it on to the pillow really hard so I am just wondering.
😮 I was walking thru my kitchen, and I lost my footing I knew I was falling and screaming as I went down. My head hit the floor and bounced . I felt like I would not get up again. I did very slowly. I have a bad black eye now. I fell on my left side and the top side of my head temple was bruised. I will never forget how strange I felt. This happened the other day and I went to dr the next day. Still recovering 😮
I was told that during a fight, I was picked up about head to shoulder height and was tackled backwards, and the back of my head hit the hardwood floor as I was driven back. I lost consciousness and was conscious in the hospital, however I was unable to recall anything from that night. My feeling is that my anxiety was exacerbated. This was 6 years ago and I fear that I may have developed CTE, as some noticeable personality and cognitive issues have appeared, even though this was my only diagnosed TBI, and I'm only 25. Thanks for the informative video, a bit of relief to know the science behind it.
I fell of my bike me and my phone suffer of concussion . I'm not supped to be on youtube both the screen light and Dr concussion's voice are teasing my brain cells
I’m not sure if I had a concussion when I was in high school or not. I was in my backyard and fell off a 6 foot ladder and smacked the back of my head on the ground pretty hard. I just laid there for about 3 or so minutes. I stumbled around a bit when I got up but I felt better by the end of day. Another time I may have had a concussion, I remember getting knocked out when I was a little kid (about kindergarten age) in my living room. I hit my head on a wooden magazine rack and next thing I remember, I was waking up on my couch not knowing what happened or where the last couple minutes of my life went and with my mom beside me frantically asking if I was ok. I just remember that magazine rack getting closer and closer to my face as I fell.
Hi! Where can i find that little infographic you guys posted a while back on social media i believe laying out the forces required for certain injuries (conc 70-120, whiplash 4-6, soccer header, etc.). I find it a great resource when chatting with my patients about whiplash versus concussion but i cant seem to find it anymore. Thanks! Love the content
I was in the Swedish army in 1995. It was a very heavy winter, like up to 40-50 cm snow in all of Sweden even in the South, well my group was a motorbike ordnance kompany, but when we went to field practices we were working with other companies obviously. Well we got skilled at driving with skiis and that art made me confident it was a very tough education and often in minus 26-28. If we as much as tied the scarf a bit too messy we would freeze like fuck from that little hole. When I crashed I went into a forest and the sun was in my face outside and it just went black. We were practicing darkness training but the self charging glow plate I should have had on had been forgotten on the ground and my officer had also forgot to inform me to use it and to let it charge so he said, go first deliver this comm radio cable to this and this haubitz cannon team. I remember this because rode the same rout just 10 minutes before. Next time I have no memory of. Yes I remember waking up on the ground, I said I must deliver this cable, someone answered sorry we took off your helmet your brakn could have splashed out. I say it feels like it's still there. I had smashed my face in the windshield of their terrainvehicle (Volvo Valp/terrängbil 11). I looked fucked up, smashed bleeding eyebrow, teeth biten off, cheek a bit smashed and as they discovered later an actual cracked jaw and a broken neck. My neck aaaalmost broke. I piece of bone is still loose in my neck. I then woke up again in a hospital and, well the rest is for another time. It took until 2022 to understand I have been an untreated tbi victim for so long. I have had 40-50 jobs and had no clue. I have two daughters with two different mothers. I'm 100% it changed my person. I have been completely crazy and made so many stupid choices.
thank you for your videos. very informative. Do you have anything about when you run/do jumping jacks and you can feel your brain bouncing around in your head? i do stuff like this and think I only notice after I had anxiety from having a mild concussion. I'm sure I'm feeling the muscles moving around in my head but I keep noticing it whenever I dance or run.
Your brain does not contain pain sensory fibres - so although you think its' your brain moving around in your head, you cannot actually feel your brain (other structures like blood vessels do have pain fibres). This sensation is usually neck-related sensations which are felt in the head through referred pain mechanisms
I fall into the older/senior female. I was dragged to the pavement in a dog fight. I don't remember the fall or the fight. This was 6 months ago and have been struggling with PCS since. I am not able to work as I fatigue quickly on the computer. My job is entirely computer based, very high pace and multitasking. I have left sided ataxia. MRI showed "age related changes". I think this may be a reason my recovery is delayed. I am receiving treatment at one of your certified clinics.
I had a concussion when I was 16 because either I pulled myself up into a solid tree branch while climbing a tree or the person I was with hit me with a piece of rebar. What I know for sure is that I was up in a tree when it happened and I heard a big cracking sound, I cursed, and then I had to do a bunch of stuff with my breathing to make sure that I climbed down from the tree before passing out, which I managed to do. I even managed to walk over and lie down on a nearby bench before passing out. Then, when I woke back up, I tried to walk up the stairs three floors to my bed because I obviously didn't feel good. I made it up there but it was really hard because I was so dizzy. After that, I stayed in bed for a while because I was dizzy but, at some point during that day, I had to go back down the stairs and to the hospital, where they took my temperature up my ass because I guess that's what they do in some countries and I happened to have been in one such country at the time. Anyway, I didn't feel well for at least a week and stayed in bed after that and the wound I got bled for about as long too. Then, I stopped feeling so bad but it was hard to focus on words because my eyes wanted to kind of bounce around trying to focus on them. That eventually went away but it sucked because I don't remember a lot of that vacation and what memory I do have has sort of like a dream-like quality to it. Very odd. Don't get concussed if you can at all help it. Ironically, I was in a motorcycle accident and, despite ripping off my shoulder and getting some serious lacerations, plus a lovely new tattoo from physics and the road, I suffered no concussion at all in that accident. I could tell that everyone was expecting me to have gotten one. It was funny because everyone kept questioning me about the scuffs on my helmet and they didn't believe me when I told them that they were from fumbling my helmet into some paint on the floor of the garage that just so happened to be the same color of paint of the truck under which my motorcycle ended up. I had fallen off before that due to some debris and scrambled to the side because I didn't want to end up hitting the truck and I held my head and back away from the ground the entire time I was sliding down the road. I even held my fingers up because I didn't want them to get ripped off. My shoulder is another, terrible issue for me to this day, but I made sure not to fuck up my spinal cord or my brain because I also had to go back to college a few days later and I knew my classes were going to start getting hard that year. The accident did take my grades out of dean's list range that year but they came back the next year, when my classes were even harder.
Oh, I should mention that one of the big reasons my grades went down is because I had to sit very still for like a month or I'd have all kinds of muscle spasms so that made it hard to study and do all the reading that I would normally have done.
Hi Concussion Doc, Thank you this is very insightful! I was wondering what types of tests are being done on concussion preventions or reducing produce?
My most recent concussion happened when I was getting out of my car and there was a thick low hanging branch that I didn't see. I stood up and the top of my head hit the branch. I didn't pass out but I did see stars and felt really dizzy.
I once hit my head on a bar so hard that I fell to the ground, but I didnt have a concussion. I even went to á brain scan and there was literally nothing to see. Despite countless hits to the head from Judo etc. my brain is completely fine.
I see a whole bunch of people telling stories. Well my turn ig. I'm here because about an hour ago I fought a garage door with my face. I ride motorcycles all the time. I work a mile from home so I don't usually gear up for that ride. Judge me all you want, idgaf. Well I opened the garage door, but it closed partially without my noticing. I then parked my bike inside like always, but smacked the garage door dead center of my forehead in the process at about 15mph. Dented the garage door. So I'm now learning about concussions.
I got first subdural hematoma when I fall bacwards from second step up of truck. My head was about 3m high from ground. I guess stocking cap I was wearing softened hit a little bit. Second I got almoust excatly 7 years later when I fall on icy yard and side of my head hit the ground from 1,75m high from the ground.
Hello, thank you for your video so I can get my recovery starts at the early stage. Female, training in the pool, I have 1250m/27mins already, someone elbowed me on my left eye in the water. The first hour I was fine but it started getting worse with massive headache and vomiting plus numbness on my left face and head. I'm surprised how this little force cost me concussion.
I am 66 years old and fell backwards on the ice while ice skating. I wasn't going fast on the ice. I more or less lost balance. However, when I hit the ice, my head took the blunt of the fall and I lost consciousness for a few minutes. I went to the hospital and had a CT Scan done. Besides the large hematoma on the back of my head, I was diagnosed with a head concussion. Everything on film looked ok. I hae had problems with confusion and memory since. Are those symptoms from the concussion? It's been one week since the fall and I still do not feel right..
I am 48 and my husband passed away and I started sleepwalking I would pass out or fall back asleep and wake up after hitting the floor. I fell 3 times in a week with tremendous force because I wasn’t bracing myself I would wake up on the floor in a lot of pain. My brain wasn’t working because even tho I’m a nurse I didn’t go to the ER. I broke my wrist in 2 spots that week and looked like I had been beat by a maniac. Eyes were swollen shut I had swelling on my skull for over a month. The 2nd time I broke my arm I did go to the Er 4 days after the 3rd fall and they did a CT scan. It noted the hematoma and swelling. After about 6 weeks the swelling on my scalp went down and I could feel that my skull had been broken and I have about a dime size indentation on my R side about an inch into my hairline. Kinda like a soft spot that an infant has. That spot also doesn’t grow hair it’s been a year and I still have a bald spot. So after a 6 month wait I finally saw a neurologist and he ordered a neuropsych eval. A MRI and an EEG. I have maybe 25% short term memory retention. Brain fog unable to concentrate and can’t drive in the dark because even w gps I can drive around completely lost for hours. So no night driving it doesn’t happen durning the day tho. I’m trying duel sensory activity to try and improve my short term memory recall. I also seem to have some aphasia. Do u have any other recommendations for me to try. I’m learning a lot from ur videos ty for making them. My sleep dr put me on klonapin and I’m only sleepwalking maybe 3 times a month now So I’m falling a lot less
I stood up, fainted, and fell forward. This caused me to hit the tile floor with my chin and left side of my face. I was unconscious already due to fainting, so I wasn’t able to break my fall with anything. It would be nice if there were more studies done on acceleration and concussive forces delivered to the brain during falls like this.
I fell into a ravine during a descend from Mont Ventoux on my roadbike almost 3 months ago. I hit the ground (that was over 1.5 meters below the road) head first. I think I made one tumble more or less straight forward before I came to a stop. No fractures, only scuffs, I didn't pass out or feel sick. My helmet is damaged a few cm's right to the top middle part, so I'm thinking there was some rotational force? I felt bad overall (sensation of pressure on the head, pain behind my eyes, tinnitus, anxious response to overload of stimuli) and super tired for a few weeks, then thought I was getting better. However, symptoms clearly worsened when I got back to uni after summer. I started to notice several cognitive symptoms in addition to what I already had: strong light sensitivity, difficulty remembering things/concentrating/routing/making sentences/logic reasoning, making 'stupid' mistakes without noticing it. Those could have been present during summer, it's hard to tell. Now I can't function during classes and practice (I study dentistry) and the medical help I've had so far wasn't very helpful. I won't go back to roadcycling or speedskating anytime soon, but I hope to learn when would be a safe moment to do so. Thank you so much for your videos, I'm going to watch all of them and figure out what I can do.
I was struck by lightning and the force of it threw me back hard onto cement below me . One moment I'm watching a thunderstorm next thing I know I woke up on the ground My spine is fused in 3 places & neck now and my Dr said I have post concussive symptoms he said it'll last 18 months . I'm at 2 1/2 month mark
Hey , I am an athlete that plays sport in Australia. I have had concussion in the past about 2-3 times. It has been over 4 years since I've had a known concussion. But when I try to return to sport I seem to get concussion symptoms from extremely small bumps without any head rotation or contact to the head. My general symptoms are brain fog, frontal headache , drop in energy. Could there be somthing else causing these symptoms ? Because the contact that gives me these symptoms is very small (way lower then the thresholds in this video) and it is stopping me from being able to play my sport.
I can relate. It took years, but eventually I built up a bit better resistance. I'd suggest running or another sport that doesn't involve ANY head bumps.
Thank you for the video! I’m 28 male. Had 2 bad concussions in 2017 and PCS ever since. A girl I was dancing with last night bumped my head and I feel a little off. Not sure if it’s from the anxiety around the past or acted my symptoms up.
Good afternoon, I don't know if you're seeing comments on this specific video anymore, but let's go. 6 days ago, someone elbowed me in the back center of my head, it was a very mild pain, no wounds were created on the head and my head moved a few centimeters forward, but as I have OCD that worry kept bothering me. Since shortly after impact. Later, about 20 minutes later, I started to feel dizzy, along with a small pain at the base of my neck that intensified when I swallowed something. And now here I am, with mild cognitive issues, not knowing if a concussion actually happened or if it was my damn OCD. If you can answer, it will really ease my mind. Thanks.
It could have been a concussion or it may not have been. But even if it was, the injury heals within the first few weeks. Persistent symptoms however are due to other factors (mental health being one of them). So, whether there was an injury or not, the persistent symptoms are NOT due to ongoing brain injury but rather other factors...which are all treatable. Check out the rest of the videos in this series to understand more.
I fell head first and hit the side of my head on a rock whilst walking down a peak in the UK. I got significant bruising, but no broken skin on my head. I've felt so unlike myself for 3 months, and it's frustrating because doctors and my loved ones don't seem to be listening to my concerns or taking them seriously. I lost my job because I was trying to return after 2 weeks, it was too much, I extended my sick leave and that was that. I feel the word "minor" in the MHI label has been unhelpful. Is it all in my head? I'm exhausted
One month ago I was rear ended at a stop by car going about 28 mph. I've snapped my neck and head forward at the impact then hit the headrest. No issues or any pain at that moment, the next day I had a painful neck and a mild headache with fatigue. What could be the g in such rear end events? Were those symptoms caused by whiplash or concussion? CT and physical exams were normal by two neurologists I've seen but both diagnosed me with concussion.
I'm a little late to this party, but want to know if you can estimate the amount of g-force sustained when I went head first into the boards playing ice hockey. The impact was forceful enough to cause a chance fracture of T12 and facet fractures of T11. Any early concussion symptoms were masked by the anesthesia and pain meds from the spinal fusion surgery. Oh, and then for more fun with physics, can I back calculate the speed I was traveling right before impact?
For a female adult group for research on concussion forces. Could I suggest looking with horse people may it be athletes or equestrians. The concussion risk is high! Got mine that way😅
My son was playing in school and he had a twist and fell and had a black out for about 5 to 20 seconds and when he stude up he could not recollect were he was until the mate told him his name and other things and we took him to the doctors.
Hello. I fell hit the back of my head on concrete 2017. I was knocked out for under a minute. Two days after accident I flew 19 hours with two brief stops. On takeoff I immediately had a dynamic headache that only got worse as I flew. The flight attendant suggested possible Altitude Sickness. I still struggle with fatigue, headache, sleep, stamina, confusion, aphasia, and memory issues. Could you speak about the impact of AS flying after a concussion? Dehydration? And what might help now?
It’s incredible how hard to impossible to cause diffuse axonal injury and how much force is needed to do so. Even punches to jaw rarely cause any damage axon. Knockouts are temporary with almost always full recovery because it disrupts communication between brain cells not due to primary or even secondary axotomy.
Hi Doctor, 58-year-old female. I recently bumped my head on a wood post at work on the right side above my ear. I’m a week and five days into this injury and have all the symptoms of dizziness, Nauseous, headaches blurred vision, ringing in the ears. Went to the emergency hospital where they did a CT scan was normal as you stated, what was told this was a concussion. I feel miserable, I’m hoping that I will find some relief very soon. I do have a follow up appointment with my occupational doctor. This is just all very scary. Does it matter where you hit your head? I was told that the Front and the back of the head of the skull is much thicker than the sides of the head, Is this true? I just wanna feel better. Thank you for all the information provided in your videos. 15:02
Hi there, I hope you feel better soon! If you want some more help with your recovery I would suggest you check out our Concussion Fix program (it's online and teaches you how to start addressing the underlying drivers of persistent symptoms - the sooner you start on this stuff the better) - you can google it and read some reviews and see what you think. Now, as for your question regarding location of impact - no, this doesn't matter at all. The reason is because the injury is from the brain moving inside the skull - so the thickness of the skull doesn't matter because it's actually the whipping motion of the head that causes the brain to jostle and stretch/sheer. Hope this helps!
Hey doc I hit my own head 6 times on top of my head because of anger issues now I am having a slight headache but no severe symptoms only minor scalp discomfort am I fine?
I fell from a bunk bed. I always thought concussions are by athletes and grant forces of that kind. But falling from the bunk bed and breaking a tooth seems forceful enough plus all the aftermath I'm going through
I asked this question on the "What is a concussion" video, but it's more appropriate here. Can one give themselves a concussion through shaking their head, or headbanging to music? I don't have reason to believe so, and I guess it all depends on the force being exerted by the neck muscles.
@@CompleteConcussions Thank you for replying to my comment. I have been having a lot of anxiety wondering whether or not I have gotten a concussion from headbanging. If it is possible, would you say that it is unlikely? I think so, because of this interesting study: www.ircobi.org/wordpress/downloads/irc0111/2007/Session5/5_3.pdf
What do you have on soldiers who suffer a concussion, or several over a number of deployments, that are not immediately treated, and who suffer long term term effects in the communication center. Have there been studies on soldiers who are in service? Delayed processing speed seems to worsen, short term memory loss seems to worsen
Yes there has been research on this. Military concussions tend to be more blast-related....blasts are a different mechanism than physical contact and are usually paired with traumatic events (death of close friends) and other bodily injuries. The research examining cognitive issues in veterans post-deployment shows more association with PTSD and mental health issues than it does with brain injury. Coming back from war is hard and the supports aren't always adequate...this is a bigger problem in my opinion vs. the concussions.
Thank you so much for your advice. I am a 30F I am 3 years out of a mild concussion, I got an MRI and EEG recently and they came back normal and the doctor says I don’t have PCS but I still have head sensitivity to small bumps and certain head movements like getting startled and will sometimes get this weird (what feels like) a nerve like sensation around my head if I bump it or my head jerks slightly sometimes and it’s like it activates it. This weird tingling sensation almost feels electrical and makes me dizzy sometimes and lasts 4 hours, what could this be?
Imaging doesn't show PCS - so your doc is completely misinformed. But anyways...this video will help to explain why these small bumps result in symptom activation: ruclips.net/video/U138nAb2cZE/видео.html
Hi dr, i have a question i hope you can answer. About a month ago i hit a deer and ended up with some minor whiplash and a concussion. Last night i was backing out of my driveway and didn’t notice the car behind me, so i backed into the car. This caused my anxiety to skyrocket making me worry that i re injured my brain from backing into the car. is this plausible?
I believe I have post concussion symptoms- I can’t get into my doctor till the 11th A water slide at the great wolf lodge there is an intense slide that drops the floor under you -my head kept hitting the back of the slide back and forth the whole way down it hurt and I kinda felt dizzy after but I didn’t think anything of it at the time next day I was so drained could hardly do anything -but I did not get concussion like symptoms till weeks after - to this day I feel like I’m always in a “brain fog” and light hurts my eyes and my vision goes on and off blurry..not sure yet if it is…not sure for me what the impact would take to cause one I am a small female 5/4 hight -105 pounds
got caught in sparring with aclean hook. Felt fine for two days the 3rd day I started having a heacache that lasted two weeks. Roughly a month in I decided I felt good enough to surfing been surfing 10+ years. Took one on the head now I feel worse then I did
The lower linear acceleration threshold for concussions in kids, ages 9-14, means they have an intrinsically lower threshold for concussions. Neck and head stability would have nothing to do with this lower threshold. Neck and head stability would only have something to do with possible higher peak acceleration, but that has nothing to do with a lower concussion threshold, correct?
Well we don't actually know why for sure, but yes, your assessment is what I theorize as well. In my mind lower head/neck stability could lead to higher head accelerations with less impact force....however this is showing that kids get concussed with less acceleration - i.e., intrinsically lower threshold. Which to me likely points to reduced myelination/development.
I got attacked 8 days ago now and the last couple days I been headaches and I'm having problems remembering simple things example I cant find my hat and I had an hour ago. I was driving yesterday and I realized I was 20 miles past my destination that I regularly go to. When I got attacked they punched me like six or seven times in the face I got stitches on my eyebrows and my eyes swollen shut. I didn't that could cause a concussion. And I had to watch this video 3 time because I'm daydreaming about and I usually pretty good at paying attention
I was 15 and was hit by a car at 45 miles a hour when i was waiting for it to pass but it ran in to us. I was on a snowmobile. They took me to the hospital and said had fel off the machine.
Hello, I was picked up, thrown over the shoulder of my (ex) boyfriend, he then spun around in circles until he dropped me directly on my head onto a concrete garage floor. I have also had multiple other prior to this one, pushed into a stucco/ concrete fence (someone ran full speed into me), head smashed into a brick wall, and finally a filing cabinet corner where my vision went black for approx. 5 minutes (2018) still suffering severe daily symptoms, migraine, vertigo, nausea, shaking/ trembling. Also suspecting POTS.
I am sorry to you your ex-boyfriend sounds like a monster. I know what it’s like to be twirled around and then dropped on your head and that’s why I am reading this particular section of articles to find out. OK, that happened, now what,
I concussed myself standing up into a granite countertop. I’m 44, female. It doesn’t really help to hear these numbers of Gs with no reference point. I don’t have any idea what 70gs would feel like 🤷🏻♀️ I have memory and cognition issues, ongoing dizziness, mood instability, for the first 4-5 days a headache and pressure behind my eyes. My doctor was very hesitant to believe I was able to concuss myself at what seems would be a low velocity, but the symptoms persist at 12 days post incident. So again, without some kind of explanation to give people a reference point for what different g forces feel like, throwing a bunch of numbers out isn’t that helpful.
I do make these reference points in a number of other videos! To put in perspective - a car accident in which airbags deploy is roughly 60G through the seatbelt. Less than 1% of all NFL hits are above 70G's. A sneeze is 3.5 G. Roller coaster - between 4 to 6. A countertop is not generally enough to hit the threshold...BUT the issue here is that the symptoms of concussion are non-specific...meaning there are a number of conditions that cause the same symptoms.
Still not very helpful. How do you convert pounds of force to G force? That would help your audience a lot more than giving these varying reference points.
Hope you feel better now. I’ve been told I have a concussion from standing up and hitting my head on an open draw on the way up. I literally had a dent in my skull where I hit it. I still have symptoms 11 days later. So it’s still early days but I have had some improvement which is nice. I couldn’t do anything for almost a week. Since the studies are all on men, I wonder if the force needed to cause concussion in women is much lower.
I also forgot to add this to my video comment of what do you do if it’s been years since you got hurt because you did not know that it was a concussion and you did not go to the doctor because they have to make a decision of finding a new place to liveand money to live on and placement for your children etc. again I say who pays and where do you find the money?
I just hit my right side of the head on a edgie closet as I was lifting up my body not with big force but it hurts and it is swollen. Is that a concussion?
I had concussion 9 months ago. I fell on flight of stairs and came down rolling down 5 concrete steps like a football rolling down. Since then I’m having dizziness and lately getting worse. Feel confused and can’t go out on my own. What advice to get better?
Generally, yes! The rule of thumb is that if it doesn't increase your risk for suffering another concussion and it doesn't provoke your symptoms, then it is safe to proceed.
As someone else pointed out in a reaction to another video: how are people bumping their heads and still getting concussions? You would think the force with an accidental hit of the head would be way below the lower treshold. For example I hit my head on an iron bar on a stationary bus and seemingly got a concussion symptom the next day, how is that possible?
what needs to be separated is concussion from concussion symptoms. You can have symptoms that look and feel like concussion but aren't. For example neck dysfunction is identical to concussion...you can't tell it apart. Anxiety can look exactly like concussion. Long-Covid is almost identical to PCS. So every minor bump to the head is not resulting in a concussion...but if there is something underlying the surface (autonomic issues, anxiety, neck issues, inflammation, etc.) then a minor bump can cause someone to experience concussion-like symptoms. The interesting thing is that the treatment is the same! Address the dysfunction :)
Hello, So I had a head injury YEARS ago. An am still feeling horrible after effects. The shitty thing is when I was rushed into the ER they didn’t bother looking into my head injury at all because I had a seizure that caused me to collapse hit my head… yadda yadda. When I came back to everything I couldn’t breath I guess while I was having my seizure, and when I finally woke up I guess I inhaled some of it and it got into my lungs pretty lucky I didn’t bite off my tounge. So I physically couldn’t breathe so they didn’t even look into the head injury part. Now I’m constantly dizzy, sensitive to light, headaches, problem with sleep, still have troubles with being confused, severe panic attacks. Can this all be linked? I’ve told like 5 doctors since I don’t want anxiety meds they don’t work can you look into my head injury? Nobody cares they just ask me if I’m seeing things and prescribe me more meds🤦🏼♀️. It’s gotten so depressing I’ve given up. Do you think that maybe I could be correct that there is a link? I seen one of your videos by sheer luck I guess, and if you think it could be related I can’t give up I have to keep trying. I just want to feel normal again more then anything in the world!
Hi there - sorry to hear that you are still struggling. Given your situation, I think that you would likely do well with the Concussion Fix program (google it and read some reviews to see what you think). It'll help you make sense of the symptoms!
I hit my head in hit and fall scooter accident recently. I was in the speed of around 30kmph. A calf run fast suddenly towards me. I fall and my head hit on the road surface. My helmet slipped out of my head after hitting. I fall on my left. Immediately I tried to stand up but felt vertigo and I felt loss of sense in my right hand. I had blurred vision. After 10/15 minutes my vision came to normal and I had regain my sense on my right hand. Though a plain brain CT shows normal I feel pain inside my head if I put little mental pressure. Sound intolerance is there. As I have checked there is no injury or pain/swelling nowhere on my outer skull. I still feel little heaviness inside my head. This feeling is like when we have flu or fever and we feel heaviness inside our head. Its now 5th day of my accident. Hope my case may be little helpful for your further research in the topic. I would be very much pleased in getting suggestions from you as well.
Hi doc, i bumped the temporal part on tree trunk and there is no swelling or injury or cut , nd ni symptoms at all, i even went to gym im all okay its been 36 hours now, There is no pain at injury sight but when i press my finger on that part it is giving me a slight pain which would be 0.5 on a scale of 1 - 10. Area of this slight pain is an inch. Could it be due to superficially injury or muscle inflammation outside only? Regardless ill be doing a ct brain to be on I'm i safe side And if my Ct is normal is there a chance that concussion may come later
So I have really bad aniexty and migraines and somebody bumped me with tv remote in forehead would that be enough force to cause concussion or hard enough object or is it probably just aniexty /migraines ?
My friend punched me mistakenly at the back of my head.....but I didn't feel anything....I fell good...just a bit sleepy the next morning....should I need to worry??
My thoughts are very slow it might takes days for me to comprehend a conversation point in passing. Could you speak about the impact of AS and flying after a concussion? And what might help now?
So far the limited scientific evidence we have shows that flying after concussion in the IMMEDIATE post-injury period (i.e., within 6 hours of the injury) seems to delay concussion recovery, however all studies done outside of that time period (i.e., 24-48 hours after the injury) seem to show no worsening or delayed recovery due to flying. Now that being said, there are only a handful of studies on this - air cabins are pressurized so there could be something there. Not to mention the stress of travelling - crowds, security, etc. could have some sort of impact. But it does not seem to be outsized according to the data we have!
I banged my head on my fridge about four weeks ago, was told I had a concussion and ended up in the er due to headache pain. CT came back fine. But could that really be enough force to cause a concussion or is it something else?
how exactly did it happen? where on your head? were there any immediate symptoms after the injury? when did the symptoms start? were there any other symptoms?
Hi Doc. thanks so much for the videos. I have a question. My 16 year old son was playing dodgeball last week at school. He said he ended up ducking from a ball at the last moment - whipping his head very fast - but without being hit and he did not hit anything. He had a couple of concussions in the past two years, and says he is experiencing similar symptoms. But he is wondering if this is just whiplash or psychosomatic since having the past concussions was very debilitating for him and he worries a lot. Could simply dodging a ball generate enough linear or rotational force for a concussion?
I can't say for certain but I think it would be extremely unlikely. The symptoms of concussion are non-specific meaning that many things can cause similar symptoms - neck, anxiety, etc. can all look like concussion. Just something to consider...
@@dr.cameronmarshall1032 Robert's mom here - to add to Dave's comment, Robert did actually get the ball in the head. Does this this change your thoughts at all? It was a proper dodgeball ball sanctioned by the school as this was part of intermurals.
Hi, around 3 months ago I completely miss-headed a soccer ball instead of hitting it with my forehead, it landed somewhere else on my head (don’t know exactly where but my nose hurt so I think there..) I got disorientated for around 10 sec but continued to play. Rest of the day I didn’t feel anything. Next day I woke up with a headache and I immediately connected it to that moment. I didn’t really rest and went on with my life (working, studying) for the following 12 days with a headache and sometimes loss of concentration after long effort. After the 12 days my symptoms got a lot worse. Light and sound sensitivity, severe brain fog, loss of concentration, feeing off. I couldn’t do anything anymore and had to move in again with my parents. MRI came back normal, but my neurologist says it couldn’t be a concussion. But he also said for a concussion you need to go out and have amnesia. Do you think it was a concussion and how can such a small impact take me so long to recover? Thanks in advance!!
I fell down some steps and hit my head on the garage floor which resulted in a bleed. I don't remember the fall at all but I do remember thinking oh no I am going to fall. I woke up on the floor and there was a lot of blood from the back of my head. 911 was called and they did an exam but it was already starting to close up. Because we were on vacation and I had literally just arrived I chose not to go to the hospital. I laid on an ice pack almost continuously for the first 12 hours. I couldn't lay flat in a bed so I sat in a lazy boy. I couldn't lay flat because my neck hurt so badly. When I got back home 6 days later I went to the ER and had a CT scan and hip and pelvis xrays. They didn't find anything wrong. It has now been 6 weeks and it took 4 weeks before I was able to go 6 hours without a tylenol for the severe headaches/migraines. I also did a lot of sleeping. Now I don't sleep so much but I am noticing little neurological things I have never noticed before like tightness around my face and some drooling. I also have just started having like a nerve fire off on my upper back near my spine like a sharp pain for just a few seconds. I am wondering if this could be a latent symptom of the concussion (my dx as the ER doctor just brushed it all off and after reading the symptoms I had almost every one except vomiting although I did have nausea) I am also wondering if I should see a neurologist . I am anxious to watch the rest of your videos to learn more before making a decision. I just don't know what kind of specialist I should see. I still feel a little swelling in the area of the hit.
Hi sir..9 months back my head unfortunately hits to the door..after 15 days onwords am feeling imbalance & unsteadyness in head( still also)..MRI scan done for 2 times ..but that is normal...am always feels my Brain is moving when i turn my head in up & down & in both left & right directions..while walking & in all daily routine works..am suffering with this problem a lot..not able to concentrate on my job...can u please let me know the details..is it really something happened inside head or else ?? Plz sir plz share the reasons for my problem..
This is called Persistent Concussion Symptoms (PCS) - the reason your MRI's are normal is because PCS is not due to brain damage. You "Feel" like you brain is moving when you turn your head but your brain actually can't feel anything - it doesn't have sensory cells to feel anything - so what you are feeling MUST be something else. Usually in my experience , this is due to neck dysfunction...
How am I supposed to actually know how hard I've been hit... A grown man fractured my face and I woke up on the concrete I'm pretty sure something is wrong but nobody believes me
Thanks, this was reassuring for the hypochondriac in me
I know right? Whenever I just barely hit my head, I think I gave myself a concussion and therefore brain damage. It really stresses me out. So this is making me feel a lot more reassurance, as you said.
THIS MADE ME FEEL SO MUCH BETTER HOLY, THANK YOU
(Male 56yrs) Thank you for your video and your previous one.

Thank you so much. I hit my head, it didn't hurt or made me have concussion symptoms, but me feeling my brain "move" made my anxiety skyrocket. Your videos helped me understand what happened and be a little more calm. Thank you!
The good news is that you can't actually feel your brain...so you feeling your brain move is not actually feeling your brain move :)

Hello, I was wondering if you are better now? I hope so
Wonderful series of videos.
Or cause
Sub-concussion (micro concussion)?
last week I punched myself around the temple 2-3 times due to anger. I didn't feel anyway dazed, confused, light sensitivity, ear ringing, or problems with conversation.
Only things i noticed are some sleep issues difficulties 1 day later. And probably an increase in my PRE-EXISTING migraine and PRE-EXISTING dizziness.

what is a power assist door? like a supermarket door?
Wow what a stunning lecture about my injury. Can't wait to see the rest.
How much force is needed to get another concussion right after the first concussion?
As of January 2023 I am 70 1/2 years old. I suffered a fall 10 days go and hit my head, suffering a concussion. At day 10 I was starting to feel better when I mildly bumped my head and the symptoms came back at a level of right after the fall. Now I had another concussion 16 months ago in a car accident and shook that one off. I've probably had 20 to 25 concussions in my life but never felt any effects from them that lasted more than a day. So I have to assume that age and possibly the volume is finally catching up with me.
do 20-25 concussions did impact your cognitive ability. If not , then did you tried to live a brain healthy lifestyle?
@@chrish7694 hi I was just wondering how you are doing now? Are you feeling better?
Thank you Dr. Cameron Marshall, this is NFL outrageous 🙏🏼

I have gotten 7 to 8 concussions in my life because I hit my head alot when I was younger thanks for the information.
I have been completely crazy and made so many stupid choices.
what advice would you give?
thank you for your videos. very informative.
Hi Concussion Doc,
Thank you this is very insightful!
I was wondering what types of tests are being done on concussion preventions or reducing produce?
You should make a video for boxing and head trauma. A lot of boxers died due to head trauma from boxing matches.
Excellent content, ThanykYOU
Can someone please summarize this. My head hurts really bad.
Hi, how did it evolve afterwards? have you recovered?
This would for sure be enough for a concussion!

Is hitting your head on a shelf enough force to get a concussion?
Had similar incident ,had the first set of symptoms like u ,doctor Said its sinus headache
I was struck by lightning and the force of it threw me back hard onto cement below me . One moment I'm watching a thunderstorm next thing I know I woke up on the ground
My spine is fused in 3 places & neck now and my Dr said I have post concussive symptoms he said it'll last 18 months .
I asked him something similar in one of his most recent videos and he replied that is post-concussion syndrome
I can relate. It took years, but eventually I built up a bit better resistance. I'd suggest running or another sport that doesn't involve ANY head bumps.
Same with me.

Thank you for the video! I’m 28 male. Had 2 bad concussions in 2017 and PCS ever since. A girl I was dancing with last night bumped my head and I feel a little off. Not sure if it’s from the anxiety around the past or acted my symptoms up.

hi doc i walked straight to glass door it was very loud do you think i got concussion? thanks
What mph in rear-end car crash corresponds to the 70-120g threshold?
One month ago I was rear ended at a stop by car going about 28 mph. I've snapped my neck and head forward at the impact then hit the headrest. No issues or any pain at that moment, the next day I had a painful neck and a mild headache with fatigue. What could be the g in such rear end events? Were those symptoms caused by whiplash or concussion? CT and physical exams were normal by two neurologists I've seen but both diagnosed me with concussion.
Can cause eye floaters ?
I'm a little late to this party, but want to know if you can estimate the amount of g-force sustained when I went head first into the boards playing ice hockey. The impact was forceful enough to cause a chance fracture of T12 and facet fractures of T11. Any early concussion symptoms were masked by the anesthesia and pain meds from the spinal fusion surgery. Oh, and then for more fun with physics, can I back calculate the speed I was traveling right before impact?
For a female adult group for research on concussion forces. Could I suggest looking with horse people may it be athletes or equestrians. The concussion risk is high!

I did that but with driving halfway across the states. Aphasia is my biggest struggle.
I hope you find something that helps you relieve your symptoms!
But falling from the bunk bed and breaking a tooth seems forceful enough plus all the aftermath I'm going through
Does hitting bag or shadowboxing cause microconcussions on brain?
no
I asked this question on the "What is a concussion" video, but it's more appropriate here.
Can one give themselves a concussion through shaking their head, or headbanging to music? I don't have reason to believe so, and I guess it all depends on the force being exerted by the neck muscles.
It's definitely possible but difficult to quantify. I think you can find other ways to enjoy the music ;)
I believe I have post concussion symptoms- I can’t get into my doctor till the 11th A water slide at the great wolf lodge there is an intense slide that drops the floor under you -my head kept hitting the back of the slide back and forth the
whole way down it hurt and I kinda felt dizzy after but I didn’t think anything of it at the time next day I was so drained could hardly do anything -but I did not get concussion like symptoms till weeks after - to this day I feel like I’m always in a “brain fog” and light hurts my eyes and my vision goes on and off blurry..not sure yet if it is…not sure for me what the impact would take to cause one

Can someone tell me where i could purchase accelerometers that i can monitor my own head?
best bet would be an instrumented mouthguard...
What happens when a boxer throws a quick series of punches with 58g. Can it add up and surpass the concussion threshold?
no. The threshold has to be surpassed in one shot in order to cause concussion.

Hello,
I was picked up, thrown over the shoulder of my (ex) boyfriend, he then spun around in circles until he dropped me directly on my head onto a concrete garage floor.
OK, that happened, now what,
Hi doctor! What do you say about self punch to the temple? I assume it produces angular acceleration. Can an amateur's self punch to his own temple surpass the concussion threshold?
Hello Doc can I get concussion if I shake my head left and right repeatedly beacuse I am having headache after that
I concussed myself standing up into a granite countertop.
Did your symptoms improved now?
Still not very helpful. How do you convert pounds of force to G force? That would help your audience a lot more than giving these varying reference points.
@@Enigma0071 yes, it took almost 2 months to feel like I was back to normal.

So what happens if we just return to exercise and start weightlifting after concussion and there's no symptoms, is that safe?
Hello,
So I had a head injury YEARS ago.

Will shooting handguns at a indoor shooting range cause concussion?
no you're fine lol
I would be very much pleased in getting suggestions from you as well.
are u oK? now
Took a 90 mph fastball to my cheekbone two days ago while batting. Got knocked out then vomited and fainted. Ct negative.
Take it easy bro and don’t get covid. You’ll be right in 1 month to 1 year.
those CT's always gonna be negative bro, it barely if ever shows up
There are mouthgurds now to measure rugby athletes collisions and monitor concussions
Hi doc, i bumped the temporal part on tree trunk and there is no swelling or injury or cut , nd ni symptoms at all, i even went to gym im all okay its been 36 hours now,
There is no pain at injury sight but when i press my finger on that part it is giving me a slight pain which would be 0.5 on a scale of 1 - 10.
Area of this slight pain is an inch.
Could it be due to superficially injury or muscle inflammation outside only?
Regardless ill be doing a ct brain to be on I'm i safe side
And if my Ct is normal is there a chance that concussion may come later
Ok went air born and land head first. I jaut got told I have a permanent brian Injury
So I have really bad aniexty and migraines and somebody bumped me with tv remote in forehead would that be enough force to cause concussion or hard enough object or is it probably just aniexty /migraines ?
I'm just afraid I wouldn't be able to tell the different between all of those conditions

I slapped my head from back and front really hard .. will this cause concussion ?

How are you feeling now? Did your symptoms went away?
@@Enigma0071 Hi, it turned out to be long covid which I also got around that time. Still battling it.
Thank you so much sir for your valuable information...
How am I supposed to actually know how hard I've been hit... A grown man fractured my face and I woke up on the concrete I'm pretty sure something is wrong but nobody believes me
I would say that if there is facial fractures, the force was likely strong enough
Thank you! I'm trying to find a good doctor and someone who will listen and atleast check it out. Thanks for your time to reply! It helps
