    This was a useful video! I hit my head really hard on the handle of my freezer door while taking something out of my fridge about a week ago and immediately felt dizzy, and my head felt worse and weirder each day that passed afterward, so I saw my doctor 3 days after the incident, and he immediately dismissed my concerns and insisted I didn't have a concussion without even doing any tests. He said, condescendingly, "there's a pain scale, it goes from 1 to 10, and you definitely don't have a concussion unless your headache is at least an 8 or 9 on the pain scale." Even after I told him about the pressure in my head, nausea, and vision changes, he insisted I didn't have a concussion. I got a second opinion from another doctor the day after who listened as I explained my symptoms, asked clarifying questions, and did a thorough test, and she told me I do indeed have a concussion. Every day I feel worse and worse though, ugh, when does it get better...

    Loving the concussion content! I relied on your videos when I had my first concussion two years ago. My question to you Dr. Cam is, if you were to sustain a concussion injury, would you also have whiplash injuries alongside the concussion due to the force needed for concussion? Would it be less likely to have a concussion if the blow to the head didn’t cause a whiplash injury? Thank you for the work that you do and answering us viewer’s questions when you can!

    • @CompleteConcussions
      @CompleteConcussions  Год назад +4

      Every concussion comes with a whiplash - there is no way to avoid it based on the forces. Concussion = 70+ G's of acceleration...whiplash only takes 4.5G. So if you get a concussion (70Gs), it would be impossible that your neck not get much more than 4.5.

    Great videos, thanks you so much! It really helps to understand my own situation better and get peace with it as it seemed that my doctor wanted to diagnose it as a burnout while I am strongly doubting this and your videos give me proof to myself that I most likely have PCS.
    I do have a question which I hope you could clarify for me: Is it possible to develop stronger pcs/concussion symptoms after a few months of the accident?
    I got a ball on the side of my head during football a half year ago and was not able to work for 4 weeks wherafter I started again but looking back on it I never really felt back as normal (always kept a click/pressure around my ears and was not able to work on the same level). A month ago I was suddenly not able to work anymore and all my concussion symptoms came back stronger this time. This time everything which requires concentrating creates a heavier pressure and click in my ears and head whereas I can only stay at home.
    My Docter says that he doesn't want to speak of a concussion as I didn't blackout or as I didn't faint after the accident... although I did get for a sec dizzy and was tired the days after (+ couldn't watch a screen anymore and stopped listening to music).

This is the official sports medicine docs of all major professional league sports teams in Washington DC. I fell on my head. I ran into the bathroom and I could still see but did not check each eye separately. Much later I learned that I could see 70% or more with one eye that I could see with two eyes so seeing just with one eye would not necessarily reveal that one eye was not functional.
    I did not realize that I had a vision problem until about six months after my fall when I did test my injured eye separately and could hardly see anything out of it because I had a detached retina in that eye, which probably occurred at the time of my fall. I never had a headache after the fall (though now I do, five years later. Is very bad vision because of a detached retina a "concussion like symptom." The next day, again in the shower, the same thing. Both times it lasted less than a minute. I have never had this before or since. Is this a concussion? e.g yesterday my teacher hit the top of my head with her hand a little fast. but not with malicious intent. i knew it but I have anxiety so I felt very bad in the moment. i didn't hurt but I wonder if this would damage my brain? (before i had a brain concussion)

      What a bad teacher! By the way, my teacher also used to hit me and slap my face when I was an elementary school! Now it has become an unpleasant memory! I got concussed after getting a very strong hit in my head 3 years ago though! I still remember that day vividly! Now I have concussion and miss those old days when I had no concussion or something! 🙃👎🏻

    Ok so I am so worried right now, I was talking to someone and stood up and banged my head off the shed door which was solid, the top of my head feels so sore (there's no bumps or bleeding) of course my anxiety has kicked in, my stomach is now playing up and I feel sick and like I'm going to pass out. I feel like this is all me overthinking it but I'm also worried I've done some damage. I'm now nearly 24 hours in and have a pain where i hit my head and I feel a little dizzy but I think that's my anxiety.... dies this sound like a concussion? I'm so worried.

    How long do concussion-related headaches usually last? Can they be under 1 minute in total duration?

    • @CompleteConcussions
      @CompleteConcussions  5 месяцев назад

      "concussion-related" headaches have varying subtypes - they can be migraine, tension, cervicogenic etc. The headache that you are talking about sounds like something called the "Ice-Pick Headache" - very intense and lasts a very short period of time. It can be associated with head trauma however we don't really know what causes them. I have had treatment success with patients working on reducing inflammation and working on the neck! Look up ice-pick headache and see what you think.

    I slipped and fell 10 days ago and landed (no pun intended) hard and was diagnosed with a concussion/hematoma/brain bleed.
    So, whether I had/have one isn't in doubt. However, I'd been heavy duty weight training and walking at a cardio level prior to the injury.
    I was released from the hospital three days later after thorough testing. The neurologist recommended, like you did in another video, I only walk for at least 30 days prior to going back to weight training. My issue is there is no plan for me to be tested as you'd described in another video. There's no plan to test me on a treadmill to determine my threshold and whether or not I'm prepared to initiate weight training again at any RIR (Reps in Reserve). Guessing I should contact my primary care and arrange for the type of treadmill testing you'd recommend to determine a baseline. Correct?

    What should be simple often isn't. I was 'bounding' up some stairs 2 at a time on a pedestrian bridge the other day and ran into a metal door. It was hot, I'd been running, I had just flown back from a timezone 6 hours offset from my current one (my run was supposed to help 'reset' me). Anyway, when you are out of breath and hot, and you can still feel the pain from smarting into a metal door, it's hard to know whether to attribute your feeling of being 'off' to a concussion or not. Based on your last video it seems unlikely I had a full blown concussion, but who knows. Hard to tell how many g's I would have experienced.
    It's been a few days and I DO have concussion/pcs like symptoms (oddly, they've gotten worse since the first day, but like a fool I drank some wine while out with some friends). I had a hum dinger of a concussion years ago and had these symptoms for about 2 years, till they finally went away (for the most part). It's probably been 5 years since I've had them, but alas they have returned. Fingers crossed it won't last long.
    Thanks for providing all this great info.

    I recently discovered your videos and am a bit confused. You have brought up the concussion threshold or range in what seems to be an effort to reduce the anxiety and misconceptions that even minor head bumps can be concussive injuries. In this video you’re saying you only need one symptom to reasonably suspect you have a concussion. Yet these seemingly minor head bumps can cause any number of these symptoms (e.g., headache, dizziness, cranial pressure). How does one discern they have a legitimate concussion in this scenario? For example, you mention the G forces necessary for a concussion. Unless I’m missing something, I don’t know how anyone can measure this on their own to know whether their injury fell within that range.

      this is for educational purposes only...not so that people can try to self-determine if they have a concussion. Basically if you took a decent knock and you have one or more symptoms, you should be speaking to your healthcare professional (preferably one with expertise in concussion)

    Hi so I have an issue with the 1 symptom criteria met causing the diagnosis of a concussion. My son recently got a boot to the side of the head and a scratch cut near his ear. He wasn't on the ground long and walked off with the physio. Then he was at the side of pitch, and the physio Said have you got a headache or blurry vision , to which he replied a little yes. He wasn't dizzy and no issue walking he sat down and within 10mins no issues with blurry vision and headache gone. He wanted to go back on but was told to rest, he got in the car had no symptoms, and has displayed none for 10 days. He exercised the same afternoon and the next day and had no sign of any symptoms at all. 10 days layer no symptoms. 2 days after he sat school exams and has all week. Tuesday he attended normal soccer training. No symptoms. On the same day he had the incident the soccer physio told him he was in the 23-day recovery process no exercise for 14 days and light training for 7 more. So I tried to work out why he had been diagnosed with concussion as he had only momentary signs and nothing at all after. Basically, I was asked to remove him from the sport he loves for for 15 days and a further 7 days of competition. Considering it was also not a direct blow but a glancing blow I consider it highly likely he never had a concussion. It isn't as easy to find a neurological practitioner as you suggest so as a parent of 4 kids I just have to try and apply some parental common sense. My lad is 16yrs 6ft and 85kg. It's all variable everyone's susecetability is different and also their recovery rate so why do we have this scat rule that says just 1 of the symptoms can be endured and for any length of time. On that basis, I've probably had 50 concussions in my life hence my deliciousness at the whole subject. Any thoughts

    Something I forgot to mention in the comment I made on the last video was the idea I had of putting accelerometers in the helmets of military personnel because then you'd get a larger sample size of adults of perhaps a wider age range and of sexes. It's still not a perfect sample size of the population but it would definitely yield more data on a wider range of people. The only thing it likely would not sample are rich people but I think the only difference between them and the rest of us is that they aren't tempted to join the military due to financial concerns.
    Another thought I had was to just have accelerometers in all helmets but, of course, make it so that the person wearing the helmet can opt in or out of their data being used. You'd still only get info when the person was wearing the helmet but some of us wear them a lot and it would definitely contribute more information to the topic.

      Concussion symptoms overlap with a variety of conditions - this is correct. But to suggest that we arming people with concussion anxiety is false - you need to take a look at our other content. We spend most of our time trying to reduce concussion anxiety by presenting facts and research. Dizzy as the only symptom could be a vestibular event...but it can also be a sign of a concussion.

      @@CompleteConcussions You have a lot of great content but I have been trying to help many who get locked into "I suffered a concussion because So-in-so said these symptoms are a concussion. Should I drop out of school and hide in a dark room? Am I going to get CTE? I was planning on XYZ school, "
      Concussion Anxiety Syndrome, a term I coined for the online community over 8 years ago, is destroying lives. Every bump, bad step, strong unexpected hug, bumping the headboard during bedroom activities, a strong sneeze, hard brake/stop in the car, sets the CAS sufferer into a tailspin. They ask, "If that was not a concussion, was it a sub-concussive impact?" as if a single SCI is a high risk. They start looking for symptoms and post a list of symptoms like they copy and pasted it from some internet concussion specialist. The Concussion Management Industrial Complex is doing well but scaring the pee out of anybody with a bit of anxiety/OCD/health anxiety, etc.
      If you really want to help people get better, do a better job of helping them differentiate anxiety symptoms or 'looked for' symptoms from real concussion symptoms. Help they understand their pre-existing anxiety/depression/health anxiety/OCD. 80% of people with prolonged 'concussion symptoms' have a pre-existing struggle with these issues. Treat the anxiety/OCD/depression and many of the concussion symptoms resolve. SSRI's and such become a necessary evil to get people past the hump of Concussion Anxiety Syndrome. Nobody has developed a CBT protocol for unhabituating these responses to bumps. I've heard of EMDR being tried..
      How many concussions have you suffered in your life? Have any of them not had some immediate symptoms, for maybe 5 seconds then gone?
      As neuroscientists know, Three repetitions of improper responses makes a habit. It takes 7 or more consecutive correct responses to start to undo that learned false response. People hear these "1. Mechanism of injury. 2. Any ONE symptom" and get locked into Concussion Anxiety Syndrome. A sensitive startle response and/or sensitive vestibular response to sudden movement can be that ONE symptom.
