I like to read on electronic devices, particularly now that I can do so on my phone, because it's much lighter than most books. They now have these settings where you can take some of the blue light out of the screen and I find that this is easier on the eyes. A lot of book apps also have the night setting and I like to use it for most of my reading, even if it's during the day. Then, if the light is really bad, you can often activate a red filter in the accessibility part of the settings and that is nice. The only reason I realized that this was nice is that I've done a lot of stargazing and you use red lights so as to prevent your night vision from being messed up. I recover my night vision at what seems to be a quicker rate than anyone I've ever met and compared notes with, which is why the importance of using a red light has been burned into my memory by all the people who were annoyed at me for using a different flashlight while we were stargazing when I was a kid. Anyway, night vision seems nicer on the eyes.
A funny note on the dangers of reading ebooks in bed: So my first actual smart device was the original iPad that my mom gave me a long time ago. It was a heavy iPad and it was in a heavy case. So I had been lying in bed and reading on it when I fell asleep reading (because that's how good the book was since I would normally not try to push through another chapter if I felt that tired). It was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I had the iPad with the book on it propped up on my chest because the cover of the case could be used as sort of an A frame. Well, when I fell asleep, it eventually lost its stability and I woke up to being conked right on the bridge of my glasses by the top edge of my iPad. I don't think I suffered a concussion or anything, but it did suck to have my glasses jammed into the corners of my eyes like that and it would have been terrible had I just had a concussion. I was just reading to go to sleep; mission accomplished, at least until the book hit me in the face. lol
I'm currently struggling with a concussion. I was in a rollover car accident about a week ago. I've had a lot of concussions over the years. I was a clumsy kid with poor eyesight and hit my head a lot. I've been knocked out at least 15 times probably more. This current concussion seems to be my worst. I was unconditional for several minutes and was very disoriented for more than an hour. I didn't know who I was or what happened for quite a while. I'm about a week out and am still struggling with a headache and feeling like I'm in a fog. I'm just wondering how long this is going to last. My Doctor said several days up to several months. He wants to do a Brain MRI in about 2 months to check for long-term damage from the multiple concussions.
Sorry to hear about your injury. It sounds like your doctor isn't really well-versed in concussion. Best advice would be to find a good concussion clinic...and watch the next video in this series as we talk about long-lasting symptoms!
@@petrosk7789 honestly, not great. To make a long story short I continued struggling with symptoms for several months before finally getting in with a neurologist. After significant testing I was diagnosed with a TBI. I suffer with frequent headaches, I struggle to process new information, I quickly start shutting down in stimulating environments. I am still unable to do much of anything, and I am really questioning the point of continuing to try.
3rd concussion. 12 days after the hit I developed intense symptoms. Mostly just can’t open my eyes or I’ll have a spin of symptoms include nausea. Vision is flickering like a candle. It’s been two weeks since I’ve started symptoms. Help me please. I can’t even do the exposure thing you mentioned because the moment I open my eyes I get bad symptoms. I’m alone too and no help. Just got back from Mexico please help me
I would recommend you check out the Concussion Fix program. It will help you to build your foundational recovery structure and get past this initial stage!
Most injury specific things tend to be a non-issue. For example, the evidence on loss of consciousness tends to be quite mixed - meaning some studies show prolonged recoveries and others show no difference...the things that are shown to consistently produce persistent symptoms are: 1. Previous history of mental health issues (anxiety/depression) 2. How high your initial symptom severity score was (which is actually more associated with your mental health state and your coping style/skills) 3. How quickly you were in to see a trained concussion provider 4. How quickly you initiated active rehabilitation (i.e., subsymptom threshold exercise and vestibular/ocular/cervical spine) So it's less about the "severity" of the injury but more about how you deal with it as well as your inherent anxiety and coping style. A good concussion provider can help to reduce this anxiety and start early rehabilitation which can basically negate the first two issues and address the second two.
Hi Doc! Was wondering what treatment would you recommend to start with for a concussion? Chiro, physio or osteopathic medicine? Made an appointment at one of your accredited clinics, hopefully improvements will be seen Thanks 😊
So I have a question: if a concussion causes a leaky gut due to increased metabolic need, might that also mean that an increased metabolic need for some other reason, such as injury or infection to much of the body, might also cause the same thing? Might this sort of thing cause an autoimmune response? The reason I ask is that there are a lot of autoimmune conditions that seem to run in my family, suggesting that some people are more likely to develop this kind of problem than others. The thing is that I developed my first problems with food allergies after my first concussion. Then, in 2020, I nearly died of Covid, even though I'm fairly young and relatively healthy. After that, I developed the worst of the autoimmune conditions that run in my family that results in odd, fatty masses that feel like you constantly have a bruise. They are just annoying except for if they get really inflamed, which they like to do, and/or when they form somewhere that doesn't have a lot of room for that kind of bullshit, like the stupid ones I have on my wrists and on the bottoms of my feet. I had zero problems with any of this back when I was younger and I realize that a young body is remarkably resilient, but the onset of these things was pretty stark for me, particularly all the masses that cropped up right when I was the sickest with Covid.
Got hit on the top of my head pretty hard. Burning sensation and tightness around head. Also uncomfortable stomach sensation (while walking) no concussion clinic near me. Went to urgent care, doctor just laughed about my walking and said to go ER if it gets worse. Not sure what to do
Can concussion symptoms come on almost a year later? I had an accident and only muscle/rib issues.. no headaches or anything but 9-11 months later started having dizziness issues that havent gone away since- come and go, mostly come. 5 yrs now. Ive had close to everything tested. I now have upper cervical issues but not bad, nothing on mri- so i believe its that and or eyes. Still wonder if concussion related or not and its just normal eye/neck stuff.
I fell on my head I was In and out of consciousness for two days at the hospital they said they needed the bed so they kick me out of accident and emergency and left me on a chair being violently sick . they told me they had 100 people waiting for one bed so they said nothing else to me. So my friend took me home. They told me nothing about after-care. They left the van from in my hand. I contacted the doctor and he wasn’t interested. I spent two weeks in bed sleeping most of the time and being sick of extreme headaches and severe pain in the head 4 CT scans. They told me I had a bleed on the brain and a clot I’ve had no after care it’s now 3 months.
hi doctor ... i love your content , please answer my question i had a mild concusion after hitting the back of my head while kneeling down understairs to a concrete wall (like 25-30 g force )... had symptoms and recovered why is minor head bumps after a month from recovery causes symptoms to come back ?
Is it normal to still have a tender spot where you initially hit your head 4 months before? I have not had a CT and I understand most people don't. But I've been in PT OT and soon ocular therapy with an optimologist. Im bipolar so it has been affecting my mental health. I'm just wondering if I should as to get a CT?
2 questions: what does taking a moderate rest consist of? I read that sexual activity can increase blood flow to the brain and help recovery, is that true? Secondly, does taking NSAIDs help reduce inflammation and increase bloodflow?
I have headaches that started after trip to gun range Had ear protection but somehow i got some kind of concussion And i had developed headaches Exercise definitely help me Also massages Wanna try accupuncture But definitely not in sex mood
Hi, I got hit by a heavy bag in a crowded market really mildly but after that I started to feel dizzy in my head. I got it checked with a Neurosurgeon he said it’s probably vertigo symptoms, my CT-Scan came out normal. Hello, I was in a car accident over a year ago. I was diagnosed with post concussion syndrome and eye convergence insufficiency. I was seen by two neurologists, the first stated my neck was the issue, and the second stated, I should take a neuropsychological test. I took the test which was a year later, now they are saying my brain has recovered from the concussion, however, i have a type of depression that needs to be treated asap. My question, If a concussion is not treated could it turn into a life threatening depression?
Persistent concussion symptoms can be due to a number of factors (next video in this series is going to cover that). Mental health is one possible factor. So concussion can lead to depression...but the severity of that depends on how it's managed.
i have a serious question about concussion in my classroom my class mate who was sitting behind mine bench threw heavy 8-10kgs of bag on my head it hit me pretty hard and after 8 hours i am having severe headache at the spot of hit . how likely it is that it caused me concussion ?
:( having my head up straight when i can because of the neck pain. other than that i’m laying down. I’ve been using ice and tylenol. My day 2 and i still feel horrible :( i’m seeing a specialist tomorrow.
@@evelynchavez5274If any of what you are experiencing is neck-related (and it most likely is, as explained by Dr.), daily icing is one of the best ways to reduce neck inflammation. It is also crucial that you adjust your sleeping posture, as that will help your neck realign itself. The upper cervical injuries/concussions can be a bit trickier to manage, as C0-C3 is harder to fall back into place with good resting posture. That is why a PT is recommended. Make sure not to get a PT who wants to jump right into improving your range of mobility, which is too extreme for most sensitive neck and whiplash injuries. Find one more concerned with light stretching and movement. Maybe massages. Best luck - PCS 14 months.

Yes you need to be checked again. I falled and hit side of my head to ground. I was checked out in same Day. Later I got black eye and headacke didn't go away. 4 weeks later when I got to doctor again they found out I got subdural hematoma.
because weight lifting is not the right way to start exercising post concussion. It needs to be a slow gradual start into cardio-based activity. And there is a proper way to do this to stay below threshold. If you go beyond your threshold you can make things worse.
I think my 7mo old lab gave me a concussion. She was having zoomies and clocked me in the jaw with her head; I literally felt my brain jiggle like a piece of jello and am now in a world of pain and nausea 🤕

Hey Cam. Odd that you use such horrible text to background contrast in your chart at 7:00 . In the US, you would be in violation of the ADA WCAG standards. You use your reports to support your Concussion Industrial Complex business model but then you say wake them up in opposition to the data. If they are free of the serious symptoms, sleep at normal times is more important than the rare risk of a bleed or other serious event. Disrupting sleep cycles is not good. The person needs to cycle through all of the sleep cycles to enable the glymph system to function properly. Waking them up prevents these sleep cycles. Do you understand the glymph system. Moderate rest is not the same as maintaining a low intensity activity level. People misuse the moderate rest instruction. Manual activities are a great low intensity activity. Play cards (Solitaire is great) with real cards, not on the computer/phone. Work in the garden. The hands cannot act faster than a concussed brain and strained visual system can tolerate.
You are correct that the current recommendation that came out a few years ago suggested that we abandon the practice of waking however I have personally seen cases where patients have died without obvious signs prior to going to sleep. There is also no evidence that sleep disruption in the first night after concussion affects recovery time. So in my opinion, I would rather err on the side of caution on the first night (and obviously when presenting videos to the general public on RUclips you want to take an even more cautious approach) - that's how I see it anyways. There is also no evidence that screen time is harmful post concussion so they can play on the computer if it isn't bothering them FYI. Helping people with concussion is now the "Concussion Industrial Complex" is it?
@@CompleteConcussions I never said no screen time. The challenge with screens is the speed and intensity of the stimulation. Gaming... NO..... Watching streaming videos or watching TV is fine as long as the subject is not high stress or have a high visual impact. The objective is to stimulate the brain to have good blood flow without stimulating stress hormones and such. Scrolling phone screens is high impact. A TV can be low impact. The point of uninterrupted sleep at normal times is also to reduce the risk of disrupting sleep patterns for the next nights. It is also extremely important to get the glymphatic system flowing. That requires the slow wave stage of sleep. [A publication by L. Xie and colleagues in 2013 explored the efficiency of the glymphatic system during slow wave sleep and provided the first direct evidence that the clearance of interstitial waste products increases during the resting state.] The sleep importance was explained by neurorehab therapists who has a specialty in sleep and recovery. She follows the best and latest research. Disrupted sleep at normal times often leads to long term disrupted sleep due to the tendency to nap during the day. I don't understand why you say vestibular and vision therapy can start so late...10 after injury. The research I've read says they need to be assessed and treated as soon as possible. Vestibular can be assessed and treated immediately with great benefit. Epley therapy with goggles can quickly treat the vestibular issues related to canalith disruptions. I suffered a head bump 2 months ago. It I did not know better, I would have claimed concussion. off to the ER because I have a history of TIAs. Nope, a quick referral to a vestibular therapist who did Epley with goggles and I was fine. Unfortunate that Epley's research was rejected for so long. When is Canada's health system going to make access better? Hockey players get access to team doctors but the rest of Canada can take months to get past their PCP after being concussed. Just like the UK, Canadians need advocates like ONF to get them to the care they need. Lots of 'Bring your own money' specialists but few in the Provincial system. Have you worked with MyoWorx?
@@idadho Yes we are well aware of the glymphatic system - we cover it extensively in all of our training courses. What we are talking about here is the very first night and we aren't advocating to wake people up and give them a math test...it's simply a check to see if they can be aroused. There is no evidence that disrupted sleep in the first night after injury causes any delay in recovery. To us, it seems like it's better to err on this side. Obviously some will disagree with that...and that's ok. Secondly - you are confusing vestibular and vision rehab with a simple BPPV check. Any clinician with any knowledge at all would pick up BPPV in a second and treat it right away. This is our protocol as well. But if someone is having symptoms of dizziness (that are not BPPV) after concussion it can go away on it's own in the first few days...so there is nothing to treat. The current literature is pretty clear that if those symptoms are not going away after the first 7-10 days, then starting some rehab is required. Finally - Canada and the UK health systems will never have better access...in fact things are getting worse. The major problem with concussion however is that treatment consists of manual therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, vision therapy, nutritional changes, etc. These are not covered by gov't health care in any significant way. So they'll continue sending people to neurologists and they will continue to get nothing and nowhere. The reason we exist is because of this terrible system; and good thing we do otherwise thousands and thousands of people would continue to suffer.
@@CompleteConcussions How do you arouse a sleeping person without disrupting their sleep stages? The cascade effect of disrupted sleep can impact emotional health, depression/anxiety, that will impact recovery. The expert said this was an important concept that needs to be considered. You say you know of bad situations where the patient was allowed to sleep. Yes, and I could say the same about chiros who do twist the head and pop the neck, resulting in serious cervical or vertebral artery injuries, but I know how rare those events are. BTW, Do you teach against such chiropractic adjustments post concussion? An unstable C-1/C-2 does not respond well to them. Gentle traction and mobilization is often the limit to cervical treatments with a strong dose of postural self-discipline, especially during sleep. Yes, the current system, especially nationalized or provincial systems, is terrible at responding to concussions but the profitization of concussions, started by Mickey Collins/ImPact and others lead to too many seminar trained 'experts' who are lacking. Carrick and the Carrick copy cats have a poor track record. Many concussion specialist appear to actually over-treat, usually chasing dollars, creating over-stimulation and fatigue conditions. Reports of "I had cognitive therapy today. I feel horrible." are rampant. Even you spend too long saying too little showing you are missing some of the finer points like the struggles a concussed brain might have receiving information. It is like you are doing long form infomercials. I'm not denying that you have a lot to offer but there is far more need to focus on self-care than clinical care. That self-care needs to include reduction of anxiety issues by not over-stating the issues. I know of too many who spent $10,000 with Carrick or CognitiveFX or Dr Amen with no benefit, some even worse. Why is it that all the research you mention is kept essentially behind a paywall when so much is valuable for self-care? Yes, your RUclipss are valuable and free but include direction to your program. Dr Glen Johnson offered his TBIGuide to the world with just pleas to support his costs to publish. It may need some updating, especially from the physiological angle but Dr Johnson's heart to help people is obvious. A key value is it is in readable format. One can read it and even print it and highlight parts so family can read it. The Buffalo Protocol is available to those who dig to find it. But, even it is misused. It is intended for Return to Play, not Return to Study or Return to Life. Your "How to reduce symptoms.." by pushing challenges is lacking. The grocery store exposure therapy concept could be explained much better. Not every exposure causes immediate increase in symptoms. Some have a delayed increase in symptoms. Most increases in symptoms are much more subtle than 3 point increases in headaches. I never experience increases in headaches. My increasing symptoms are more cognitive or processing oriented. I've yet to meet anybody who understands how to recognize the early signs of increasing cognitive/processing struggles. Do you know what they are? It may be that we both have different ideas of recovery. Just getting back to life, Return to Play, Return to Study, are not recovery. That is the target of most concussion and neuro rehab specialists. "You can walk and talk and chew gum and you look great. You have recovered" That leaves us far short of the goal of not living on the roller coaster. There is so much to understand about the mechanisms behind the triggering of symptom increases. Understanding why grocery stores or restaurants can be a struggle is important.

I was just reading to go to sleep; mission accomplished, at least until the book hit me in the face. lol
I just got one yesterday
Thankyou doc it was very informatiive
How are you today?
@@petrosk7789 honestly, not great. To make a long story short I continued struggling with symptoms for several months before finally getting in with a neurologist. After significant testing I was diagnosed with a TBI. I suffer with frequent headaches, I struggle to process new information, I quickly start shutting down in stimulating environments. I am still unable to do much of anything, and I am really questioning the point of continuing to try.
What if there is no Clinic in my country, what kind of neck treatment exactly should I look for ?
3rd concussion. 12 days after the hit I developed intense symptoms. Mostly just can’t open my eyes or I’ll have a spin of symptoms include nausea. Vision is flickering like a candle. It’s been two weeks since I’ve started symptoms. Help me please. I can’t even do the exposure thing you mentioned because the moment I open my eyes I get bad symptoms. I’m alone too and no help. Just got back from Mexico please help me
I would recommend you check out the Concussion Fix program. It will help you to build your foundational recovery structure and get past this initial stage!
I can’t afford 300$ I can’t work because of this concussion
I have high blood pressure since my concussion
Does severity of concussion and if you lost consciousness have impact on long term? Or is it a non issue?
Most injury specific things tend to be a non-issue. For example, the evidence on loss of consciousness tends to be quite mixed - meaning some studies show prolonged recoveries and others show no difference...the things that are shown to consistently produce persistent symptoms are:
1. Previous history of mental health issues (anxiety/depression)
2. How high your initial symptom severity score was (which is actually more associated with your mental health state and your coping style/skills)
3. How quickly you were in to see a trained concussion provider
4. How quickly you initiated active rehabilitation (i.e., subsymptom threshold exercise and vestibular/ocular/cervical spine)
So it's less about the "severity" of the injury but more about how you deal with it as well as your inherent anxiety and coping style. A good concussion provider can help to reduce this anxiety and start early rehabilitation which can basically negate the first two issues and address the second two.

That is reassuring and lowers my stress.:)😊
I started slurring my words 3 months later...from being in a t boned on the driver's side car accident

Would exercise post 7 days still help you, or would it be less effective
Exercise is always good
I called around today. A one year wait for anyone who gets even close to handling this.😢

hi doctor ... i love your content , please answer my question
i had a mild concusion after hitting the back of my head while kneeling down understairs to a concrete wall (like 25-30 g force )... had symptoms and recovered
why is minor head bumps after a month from recovery causes symptoms to come back ?
This is usually due to unresolved issues related to Persistent Concussion Symptoms. In these cases, small bumps can cause symptoms to flare back up!
@@dr.cameronmarshall1032 so thankful for replying back doctor, is it fully recoverable like before concusion status? and how?
Is it normal to still have a tender spot where you initially hit your head 4 months before? I have not had a CT and I understand most people don't. But I've been in PT OT and soon ocular therapy with an optimologist. Im bipolar so it has been affecting my mental health. I'm just wondering if I should as to get a CT?
My 2nd concussion was about 5 months ago, first one 6 months ago and both spots on my head are still tender. Feel better soon 🙏🏻🙏🏻
2 questions: what does taking a moderate rest consist of? I read that sexual activity can increase blood flow to the brain and help recovery, is that true? Secondly, does taking NSAIDs help reduce inflammation and increase bloodflow?

Hi, I got hit by a heavy bag in a crowded market really mildly but after that I started to feel dizzy in my head.
I got it checked with a Neurosurgeon he said it’s probably vertigo symptoms, my CT-Scan came out normal.
But even after 3 months I still feel dizziness and heaviness in my head and it feels my head is very mildly shaking inside. Symptoms tone down at times but I don’t feel normal almost 24x7.
Please suggest if I can get better with your program.
how exactly did it happen

Hello,
I was in a car accident over a year ago.
My question,
If a concussion is not treated could it turn into a life threatening depression?
Persistent concussion symptoms can be due to a number of factors (next video in this series is going to cover that). Mental health is one possible factor. So concussion can lead to depression...but the severity of that depends on how it's managed.
@@CompleteConcussions thanks, I will be looking out for the next video!
Hi. Hope you feeling better soon. I have a question: after your car accident was you in a coma or unconscious for days?
9 months in and I still have symptoms, unable to do anything that raises my heart rate. This is horrible

i have a serious question about concussion in my classroom my class mate who was sitting behind mine bench threw heavy 8-10kgs of bag on my head it hit me pretty hard and after 8 hours i am having severe headache at the spot of hit . how likely it is that it caused me concussion ?
according to my mother she is saying i am ok you are having normal headaches
This is definitely possible...
Bro do we use a cold pack or heat pack or neither? Do we take pain meds, drink plenty of water? Do we keep our head up or down ?
not much evidence on any of that stuff and it won't really impact your recovery...so just do whatever feels best!

I received a concussion 3 days ago I went to the hospital with blurry vision and today I have started to develop a black eye and bruising on both sides of the bridge of my nose, (the impact was on my forehead above eyebrow) headache which is starting to get worse - do I need to get checked out again?
Yes you need to be checked again. I falled and hit side of my head to ground. I was checked out in same Day. Later I got black eye and headacke didn't go away. 4 weeks later when I got to doctor again they found out I got subdural hematoma.
What did they do to treat that and was it an mri or a ct scan
But How do you explain this? After two weeks i went to lift weights and it just worsened my symptoms a LOT
because weight lifting is not the right way to start exercising post concussion.
