That was the most beneficial palm muting lesson I have ever watched, as I've been trying to palm mute and play all six strings, and now I know it's only the top three, so thanks a million from a 67 year old.
Thank you for taking the time to say little things like "listen to the sound open up" and telling us to be aware of hand/bridge position. It was like wiping Windex across smeared glass, and I could finally understand what palm muting is actually doing. Thank you.
I've learned from every one of her lessons and this one is amazing for me as a beginner. i can't believe how cool it sounds when the sound starts to open up!!! i sat here for two hours trying to play her quick lesson on the first five notes of iron man with a huge smile on my face!! great teacher
At first learning palm mute is very difficult for me because all videos i watched are like too fast, dont show how to do palm mute, they just put their hand on and play so i cant keep up. Luckily i found ur video, explain how the sound diffenrent and find a sweet spot, it helped a alot. Thank you very much and have a nice day!
You've got me headed in the right direction. I appreciate all your awesome lessons, and you recently taught me my favorite Roy Orbison song in You got it!! Like how you take the time and allow someone as myself to get a thorough and concise lesson and not something rushed. Rock on Laura!!
I wish I would’ve found your channel when I started playing a year ago. There’s no shortage of song tutorials on RUclips, but I haven’t found another channel that goes so in depth on the fundamentals of technique. When I watch your videos I really feel like I’m learning how to play, instead of simply memorizing what to play. I’ve gone through a lot of trial and error to figure out things that you present really clearly. I’ve filled in some gaps on the basics that I should’ve learned many, many months ago. It feels as though I’ve taken private lessons with you. Really great work, I wish you and your channel all the success that can be had.
Amazing. I always feel you are teaching in one to one.I don't have enough words to praise you are lesson. It is in a class beyond comparison. Tons of thanks and blessings
Great lesson, never was fluent at Palm muting, was a few I could not get consistent so skipped playing due to it.. Bob Seger "Night Moves" G-F-C (Intro is Palm muting). I lost my calluses and they healed like a babies butt, took for granted...Never take breaks.. Cannot play anything tentative..Like walking barefoot on gravel..(ooh ah ouch) Great Lesson !!
Hi Lauren! I am Brian May's student. Still learning my guitar and not quiting. Love this lesson about muting. I am working on Proud Mary Tina Turners version which uses percussion strumming. Love it Brian May told me today you practice hard . You not only got the percussion strumming good but the power chords for the intro almost perfect.
Thank you so much for this clear explanation. I’ve been struggling for a while to figure out how to get the right sound with palm muting. With your simple instructions I finally found the sweet spot on my guitar. 🙏🏻
I love your teaching style and the way u explain things. I’m an intermediate player but I love going back to these types of lessons bc if u really get the fundamentals and foundation down it helps a ton in the long run. Thank u, Lauren!
Thanks for great advise. It was very helpful to me, since I tried to improve my guitar beginner skills and understand more. Now after your teaching I made a great jump to understand how to mute the chords or single strings. Also such rthythms are Great. It is new to me, because my main instrument is accordion and with that did not use or think about such wonderful rhythms. But this I realized after practicing guitar or similiar instrument. But love it to learn and understand it and began slowly to play them. And want to learn more even being 68 years old! Greetings from Germany!
Lauren I wish you lived in St. Thomas Ontario. I would highly recommend you to be a guitar instructor at Studio Arts. Brian and Anita May own Studio Arts and they are short staffed for instructors.
I was wondering when you'd let that jump off the wall! Funny thing, I'm just now working on the palm muting with my 5222. It's good for the muted base line on Travis Picking that I'm kinda failing to learn real fast (all things in time). Thanks for the vid!
Hey Lauren, greetings from NH! Love your videos - had a light bulb moment at around 12:45. I mainly play finger style and always looking for ways to spice things up with my strumming. Palm muting 1/2 the strumming pattern really adds flavor, and helps to make things sound more interesting ... Awesome tip. Will be starting your strumming course here soon. Thanks for all you do.
Depends on your feel of the song your writing, sometimes my acoustic gets treble so I mute when I'm singing, but lift off to get loud vocals through, its all according to feel
@@LaurenBateman thx for your response! Yes, i find it easier too - it is more about adding as much technics to my arsenal as possible to be more flexible and I am struggling more with the muting of more strings and especially with muting them on the upstrokes…
Brilliant explanation of palm muting. Love the fact you took the time to use both acoustic and electric. You seriously have become my favorite guitar teacher. Also noticed you mentioned a spark amp. Just bought the Spark 2 months ago and love it. Keep on Rockin' Lauren....you're awesome 🎶

Hi Lauren, around the 13:20 mark when you were playing Em and C with no palm muting, it sounded like Soundgarden, Blow Up The Outside World
I was really close without hearing the song, it was E major and C for the Soundgarden song
Ooo I love Sound Garden

Nice tutoria Laurenl. But how do you palm mute on the up strum? I have not a video at RUclips, teaching palm muting on the up strum.
Usually up strums aren't palm muted
Thanks,You rock!
No YOU rock!
Nice and cleanly explained. Well done.
Thanks Jack. Now if I could only help people find those 'ands'

I love the little spices you can add to rhythm. Glad you enjoyed it.
Very Nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Sounds great, and easy to learn: now if I could only get an electric guitar!
You can still do this on acoustic. If you have an acoustic that has electronics you can run it through and amp with distortion.
Depends on your feel of the song your writing, sometimes my acoustic gets treble so I mute when I'm singing, but lift off to get loud vocals through, its all according to feel
Exactly
Mind blowing
Thank you!
Awesome I was ready for you to break out with cherry bomb from The runaways 😊
Yeah!!!
genial teacher
Thx for the great lesson! I have a question. Why is this way of muting only used for the top 3 Strings and only with down strokes?
You can mute more, but I find it easier. It's very commonly used with power chords which are only 2 or 3 string chords anyway.
@@LaurenBateman thx for your response! Yes, i find it easier too - it is more about adding as much technics to my arsenal as possible to be more flexible and I am struggling more with the muting of more strings and especially with muting them on the upstrokes…
really easy to understand! thank you so much, earn a subs immediately ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the sub!
ThAnk you!
How can I palm mute the up stroke?
It's harder to do. I usually only do the down strums myself when I use the technique.
Please help: how to connect my scales with chords when using barre chords?
Ah, that's not my area of expertise. I recommend following my friend Charlie Long.
Gail awww thanks. Again, so happy to help. I like the Spark. Cool little amp.
Fantastic......
Thank you!
