Lauren, I love the way you teach, and I wish I could afford your 7-level course, but just having had a heart attack and diagnosed with lung cancer I cant. I will continue to watch your free videos and maybe I can get the full course in the future. Thank you so much for the free videos as they have helped me as a beginner to see where to focus my practice..
I have been teaching all my life, 40 years in various schools and I have seen a heck of a lot of teaching styles, I have been teaching guitar now for over 20 years, and I have worked with many many guitar teachers online, and I swear to God, you are the best of the lot . now that's the best compliment and recommendation I can give you. Lauren Bateman is top of the top drawer.
Lauren I am so excited that I found you! I started guitar 4 years ago in my 50's and have been learning by religiously using one particular online guitar teacher. I still use his lessons and always will, but watching your lessons the past few weeks has helped so much with your genius tips. I love your teaching methods and your awesome personality. Don't ever stop teaching.....and I won't stop watching.
Aww thanks Maggie. It's even something I over looked. It's thanks to students like you that I still need to be reminded that I can always dig in further.
You can't learn unless you make mistakes making mistakes makes you think and solve problems, when I practice with a metronome I use speeds: 15, 80, and 160bpm and the three values I use are 1/4, 1/8 and triplets all 4/4 time, scales, strumming and changing chords 160bpm is too fast for scales the metronome is a useful tool and this is the first video showing how to use a metronome and it is basically what I have been doing I am glad I am doing something right
Awesome lesson. Chose Em and D6/9 (because I'm still working on Horse With No Name) , got my count of 30 BPM and within minutes I'm waiting to hit the next strum. Within half an hour I'm practicing Horse with no name, including down strum, at 60 BPM. One thing I did find that worked for me, was that rather than following the 4 dots at the top, I focused on the sliding dot and played at the start and end of each "slide".
Lauren I sent a message when I first started A gain I am 80 years old. I have 6 great children I want to play for. Mainly children’s songs . I like your videos and your style of teaching. I’m not good on a computer using my I pad to look at your videos I am frustrated but understand it’s going to take time plus I have weak. muscle memory. 😀. At some point I’ll try to sign up for your course. Sincerely. Don Baun. Townville SC
I have tried and given up playing guitar several times over the last 15yrs (I am now in my 50's) but thanks to your videos i have started to learn again and am finding it understandable and not so daunting. I have been given a classical guitar that I have managed to restring and tune (thanks to You Tube) but am wondering if I should invest in a normal acoustic guitar as apparently a classical guitar is harder to learn with, I am wary of going to a shop as I am a salesmans dream customer and would end up buying the most expensive impressive looking guitar (it doesnt help that I have moved to France and dont fluently speak the language so I cant even ask the people for advice) Can you give me any tips with regard to this?
My biggest advice is buy something that's comfortable for your body. I good price range (in US dollars) is $300-$500 for a starter guitar. Better quality and easier to play. I like Ibanez, Martin, Taylor, Seagull, Crafter.
I am one of your Platinum students. As such I started off using a metronome. It seemed easy and beneficial but got away from it as it appeared to impede any progress whatsoever. I was probably trying to do too much at once (for myself). I plan on trying again as this is the only way I will create any real progress. Thank you for the tips. Now if I can go from the online lesson to the Workbook without losing something of value.
This very lesson is EXACTLY what I have been looking for! I've diddled around with my metronome but do not know all of the things that I can do with it and would really like to get more out of it. My most recent goal is to improve my strumming and this video is a GREAT start indeed! Would you , or anyone in here be able to point me to other videos or written material that may be similar to this particular video? Thank you so much for creating this helpful video!
Lauren I take guitar lessons but until now I've never used a metronome. Your lesson to increase chord changes is a big help. I'll continue to use it, it really helps. Thank you!
Awesome tips once again. Going to adjust my routine accordingly. Every time I watch one of your videos, things get a bit clearer. It's amazing really!!

Thanks again, you're the best ! db.
you are so very helpful. I do not have the resources to join your classes, but you have been so very helpful. I have jumped around a little so ive explored pantaotonic scales but I am really focusing on chords and chord progressions. I know know about 13 chords and I can play them sight unseen. I find that exploring is ok but I always go back and conentrate on the basics. so now I practice scales as away of getting new familiarities and am now going to really concentrate on chord changes to the metronome. I have only tried about two songs and have one ok but I am not bothered by not playing songs...I am enjoying the process. When I am able I will make a donation as I could not have come this far without the clarity of your guidence or the understanding of age. ....Thank you Lauren...I really apretiate you. best regards.
Thank you so much for you lesson series and all the effort you put in to unlock the joy of guitar playing for all of us who are trying to master this wonderful instrument. You are a true revelation.
@@LaurenBateman Day 12: Comfortably switch at 81bpm. Wow surprised! This method works. Thanks Would you have a vid on how to increase arm/hand strength for playing barre chords?
I started playing as an adult, and kept trying to figure out how the use a metronome. This has been so point on and so easy to comprehend. THANK YOU! I'm sure some adult students have had this happen, as I'm an adult, teachers automatically assume with good intentions that I know. I simply don't!!
I just tried it with Em to easy C (30bpm) and Em to D 6/9 (50bpm).I love the challenge! Question: Do you use the metronome with a fingerpicking pattern like Travis picking? Any difference from chord changes?
I am wondering how to use the metronome with a strumming pattern like DDU UDU. I hear the clicks and it is causing my U U to shift. I cannot seem to keep my strumming in time. I am going to try a simpler pattern like DDUDD and work on this for a while and then see if I can remove a D and keep it in sync.
This was incredibly helpful. Started off on learning the guitar recently and this is easily one of the best explanations of how to get better on chord changes I have seen. Thank you so much!
What a great video! I'm a beginner of less than a year playing, and I'm still trying to get better at chord changes. Up until now I have not used a metronome, but tomorrow you can bet that I will begin. Great teaching style, too!

Yes. I asked the question in the comments below your "3 BIGGEST Mistakes Beginner Guitarists Make" video. It was only a few days ago, so thank you again for your quick and terrific response!
Hi lauren your strumming video was a great help, i've been learning to play for 3 years well no formal training just somethings taught never the full songs i just pick alot like up and down the board but i have learnt some cords and the strumming video helped with the chord playing. But i have question maybe u could help me, im finding it very hard to know what string im hitting when im using a guitar pick i always hit the string below what i thought i was gonna hit, and if i hit the strings in up strokes i skip the B E strings unless i look at my struming or string picking, but i can finger pick without having to look and i hit all of the right strings but doing that makes my other hand miss the note and hold the wrong string on the neck so im asking what might i be doing wrong? If you could give me any kinda advice or make a video, anything to help. Thank you from one guitar enthusiast to another
I have a string control exercise in my course that I go over. It's like anything else. You have to train for that specific skill. So work on that alone. No chords, no nothing. Just trying to figure out string distance.

Good lesson,
Thank you Charles!
Would it help with leads and solos and bends
Absolutely!
How slides, pull off and bends will work in terms of beats(metronome). How to practice slides using metronome?
Depends on the music. But I like to practice then with students as 8th notes.
Awesome video. Know I know how to use the nome the correct way now. Get tar made easy.
Thank you.
Thank you, this has been my biggest hurdle. Since COVID I haven’t been able to ask anyone in person how to properly use the metronome.
Glad this lesson helped!
Brilliant i like using a drum beat feels more fun is this a NO NO should i start off with a metronome
Drum beat is great too
Ok sist..thx
