When I was a teenager in the 70's I asked my dad about this. He had played in bands most of his life, and he sang and played guitar. He said you have to do it so much that it becomes like driving a car. When we drive a car we can be doing several things at the same time without really thinking about it. Especially on a standard transmission. Pushing the clutch changing gears and signaling all at the same time while watching the traffic in 360° around you. We do all of this at the same time, without even thinking about it. It becomes almost like muscle memory. It's necessary if you want to be a good defensive driver. The skills in this video are important to become a versatile musician. Glen Campbell could not sing when his alzheimers started to advance because he would forget the words, but he could play the guitar a lot longer because of muscle memory. His arms, and fingers were on auto pilot. Thank you for this video. I have been playing a few years now, but still can use some help every once in a while. I appreciate your time in doing these video's. Plus this video just happened to remind me of my Dad, and that made me smile.
Aww glad to remind you of you’re Dad. But he’a right! It’s like driving a car or riding a bike. We do so many things based on muscle memory. The guitar is the same.
Right on Sarge! If one simply does what this lady says, shows, plays & sings, they'll improve their playing ability hugely and very soon. I know, because I have. Practice, practice & then practice some more. Ain't no short cuts that I know of. This woman is awesome as a teacher. And I've had other guitar teachers in the past. She's almost "too good to be true," but of course, she is. And she's for real. How refreshing that is these days. JMO
I battled for over a month to get my brain to multitask in this way. For me it was that I was hooked on music and the guitar was my tool, locked myself into a room and drove my family crazy. Others have an easier time, I expect. It took years as a pastime to get my fingers to reach the chords. Then I focused on one song until I got it.
one year.. from 2020.. i learn from basic zero knowledge about guitar… lear by my self & from youtube…. now i can singing & playing guitar at the same time… & start made cover… love this hobby👍☺️
When I was learning to play guitar and learning songs. My teacher set me up right. For one, he taught me to only practice guitar for 30 minutes at a time and never more than an hour a day. Now, I could play my guitar all I wanted but practice is more structured and results driven, practice with a metronome, but play from the heart! During practice, if I made a mistake, I would stop and correct myself, but when your playing and make a mistake, you just play through. So if your chord sounds dead just keep playing through it, and get back on track with the next chord. Also, he taught me to listen to live versions of the songs I wanted to play instead of just the studio versions. He also taught me that when it is just you and tour guitar, when your not playing in a band or with another person. your timing doesn't have to be perfect. You can draw out a word of a song, or what ever to get back on track. The most important thing is to play through it. You can qork on what you need to at your next practice session! Between the practice and playing you get better!
Hi Lauren I'll be 60 ( on the 4th of July ) and last weekend i sang and played for the very first time in a pub, i got a round of applause so i couldnt of been that bad lol and it's all down to you and your online lessons THANKYOU
To Melody. I'm too busy practicing now, thanks to Lauren. I'll add some videos (with songs) to my youtube page as soon as I feel (and hear) that I'm ready. Ain''t quite there yet. I'll also be listening to your songs and will have a comment for you after I do. Thanks for touch'n base, and take care, lady.
This is a good lesson. Especially because you emphasize the importance of taking it slow and easy. I now know that there are no shortcuts. I have to put in the hours and hours of repetitive playing until my muscle memory kicks in. Thank you Lauren for being you 🙂
Just LTL, (Listen to Lauren). And of course, do what she shows and advises, and you'll get much better, much faster. And no, she pays me nothing for my opinions. They're mine. And based on my experience with her, she's one of a few "class acts" left, I fear. On this platform. Merry Christmas Folks. Ron
Two things that helps me a lot: whistle and using my foot as a metronome. I'm not quite there yet but I'm seeing a lot of progress! Great tips! Thanks!
One other good trick, is to simplify the chords, for example Brown Eyed Girl G C G D can easily be played with G Cadd9 G D, I do that at busking gigs, it is just so easy and some of the busking gigs are long,. When you are gonna be playing and singing for 4 to 5 hours, this trick comes in handy I use it a lot for G C D songs. Giving it a try with the simple Down Down up Up Down up strum. Also, another good tip is to use the open strings passing chord (strum) for chord changes, lifting your fingers off right after the down strum on 4 and strumming open string on the up stoke on the & allows you time to form and land your next chord for the down strum on the One.. it adds a nice fullness to your music.
U R incredible Lauren. U make things so simple & help fulfil my childhood dreams. And I spend about 3 hrs everyday with you practising 🎸. U R adorable. Thank U dear.
Oh my gosh!! You are an amazing teacher! As a retired teacher of 30 years, I know about quality teachers. You get right on the level of your students. As an older student playing a baritone ukulele, I have been watching your channel. You have helped me so much with the cords that I cannot access because of arthritic fingers. I like the small size of the baritone uke and I like the way the strings are like the bottom 4 strings of the guitar. This is such a help to me because I want to play for my grandson’s little preschool class and sing some Christmas carols that are very simple. If you can point me into some very simple Christmas Carol direction, I’d sure appreciate it. Thank you so much❤️
Gloria, oh my goodness thank you. Yes I have some easier songs in my Christmas playlist. Check out Jingle Bells, Joy to the World. Here is my song list on my website: www.laurenbateman.com/christmas-songs-for-guitar Here is my RUclips Christmas playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL10FTzm-zsiItltus9Iu7wp3Vr19nz8Lj
Yes Gloria, this lady's solid gold as a teacher. Her teaching talent is going to allow me to join the youtube crowd soon as an entertainer, and I'll be 80 next month! Wish me luck. Thanks, Ron. And me too. I have to limp around due to arthritis in my left foot. That started 30 years ago! My dad had the same problem.
I find that looking at something interesting or watching TV helps me train myself singing while playing as it helps me not think about strumming. This helps me develop muscle memory.
Well I'm 56 years old and have just started learning guitar again after 20 years or so and these short video lessons are really helpful, I've learnt more in the last month than in 20 years so much easier to learn from your excellent videos than reading a book many thanks.
Hey Wayne. LTL (Listen to Lauren). I'll be 80 next month but I don't tell anybody. They might assume I'm old? LOL I try not to "act my age." That might cause another car wreck? Reck'n we've got enough of them already. I'll crank out a video or three on youtube next month, if I'm still alive. See ya then. Ron
Thanks so much for this, Lauren! I was resigned to believing I could never play and sing at the same time. I can play (been playing a long time) and I can sing (I'm a rockstar when singing along to a song.) With these tips, I think it's possible I can combine these skills.
Hey Paul. If you can sing, you can play and sing. I do it daily. And I'm getting ready to demonstrate that on youtube. Not quite ready yet. I've always felt the need to be "B" or better, at anything I did. Lauren's an A+ at what she does on this platform. I believe there's no one better.
I went from knowing nothing about guitar 8 months ago to being able to play about 7-8 songs now, i onow 10-12 chords all thanks to Lauren. Still cant sing and play but hey, here i am trying to get that down. Im sure with laurens help, il get there
Thank you for this video. I found this at the perfect time in my beginning stages. I was/am struggling with playing and singing. This Video has three simple steps for prractice. Repetition. I knew muscle memory was a must to play and strum but did not know how to practice toward that goal. Like walking and chewing gum or patting the head and rubbing the stomach. Such a clear lesson plan from Lauren. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU,! P.S. I am 75 years young and even I can follow this.
This has got to be the best video tutorial you have ever done, this to me is your best video, cause I haven't learned to move or even stand up with my acoustic guitar and I'm gonna try it today,You said something earlier that was thought provoking,"You have to be able to change chords in between words, cause the song is still going on so you can't stop strumming, in essence you've become 2 different people in one performer,When I get a riff,I find a bridge then a chorus and when I put them together I always hum until the words come out, then when I get something, I sit down with my cellphone and record the music then I write words after that, then I sing and play at the same time while I'm perfecting the song..Thank You Mrs.Bateman, this lesson was right on point..Good Job!!!!😅😅🥰🥰🌷🌹💓⚘⚘💘💕🌹⚘💕🌷⚘⚘🌹⚘💓🌹💝🥰
I'm in the beginner/intermediate state. I have 2 strumming patterns that are engraved into my brain. Pretty much can do anything with those. But I'm having a harder time going past the 2 patterns I know already, which is keeping me from pushing forward with more intermediate songs. Have to go back to basics for new patterns because my mind still needs to tell my arm what to do.
I needed this video so badly right now. Saw your Brown Eyed Girl video and thought I could tackle it first. I now realize I’m still way back on Step 1! Going to watch some TV and strum. Thanks Lauren!
Thanks, Lauren, your lessons are simple to follow. Your explanation is very clear. I have trouble holding the pick, as I play it moves. Please do advise.
Hi Lauren well thanks a lot for your youtube channel that helps me a lot am trying to play guitar by myself for twenty years but in vain. After watching your videos for one month I have a lot of confidence and improvement. You explain it very clear and easy way. i will continue to watch our videos and improve my skill and who knows I'll send you a videos
Hey Rocky, She's a KISS lady. Most youtube "teachers" don't know how to teach. I don't know why they're there, attempting to? Stick with Lauren. She's got teaching down. She knows & shows how you can learn as quickly as possible. Takes lots of practice, practice and practice. Merry Christmas.
I've reached the point where I don't even think about strumming... I just strum what sounds/feels good at the time. Sometimes, usually, I do chord changes as I hear the change in the tone (is that the right word?) of the song, as I sing. But then, I've been doing this off and on, for years. Now, I'm working on learning new chords, getting the strings depressed correctly so they sound good (finger picking lets me know if I succeed) and finding simplified versions of some of them, so my short, stiff fingers can reach. But my fingers are stretching better, as I practice and being retired, I can practice a lot! Then, as I find a new chord, I practice forming it and then changing from the chord before it, to the chord, then the chord after it in the song and back and forth until it feels natural and easy. I sit and quietly do this while watching videos, or day dreaming... Your videos are encouraging, informative and fun... When I want to know if I'm on the right track, I come here... I learn from you! Thank you! You are greatly appreciated!
Lol! "walkman battery dying down slow". Nice Laura you put in me in a reference there. I am still a student and I watch you for deconstructing things to make it simple. Thanks and cheers.
Thank You Lauren for the tips! I have been singing and playing guitar for many years but really haven’t started putting the pieces together until I started following your channel. I was working on the G-C-D transition from Jet-plane and find My transition smoother while I sing than just strumming! Always have an awesome time during practice session now that I see the full roadmap! Even the wife says my sound has improved and she recognizes the songs I’m playing! 😂👍🙏🌵
Hey I wanted to sing first.... 🎶 choirs in elementary school boys Glee in Junior high concert choir and 💈 Barber Shop Singers and high school musicals, Lil Abner, Carousel, The Sound of Music Oklahoma all that we did.... The guitar was always in the background but it was secondary .. now it's first and singing is secondary.... Yeah that lead tenor voice is gone Lauren.... Thanks Teach.... 🍎
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. This video explains so much, and makes me feel much better. I’m singing in my head😀, which hopefully is the pre-step to step one! Just glad to know I’m on the right road, just have a ways to go😀 Thanks again.
This is the best singing and playing tutorial I've seen on YT! You make so much sense. Thank you! I have a lot of years playing guitar. Switched from electric jazz to acoustic fingerstyle (self taught) as I got older. Would love to be able to just strum and sing as well. You've provided concrete advice and tips that I think will get me started. I'll check your site for a list of songs. Something simple. BTW, they say that this gets easier as you go along. Is that true?
Bravo Missy, informative lesson as always, thanks for teaching many skills besides playing the guitar, this lesson being one, singing and playing, be safe and you're becoming a hit on YT and deservingly so.
You know we love you Lauren but really ? I can barely walk & talk & with my hips I cant go up & down without the guitar !I wrote this while I was practicing my strumming one handed, I am sure I can glue it back together ? !!!!!!! A really great video my dear, as always England is sunny after one of your tutorials, thank you, regards Andrew.
This video is so on time for me. Been struggling with the idea of starting to sing while playing. Still haven't tried, but been thinking about it. This is exactly what I needed to get motivated. Thanks again for another great tutorial.
Hey Sean, I still can't tap my head and rub my belly at the same time, never felt the need. But I can play & sing. Albeit, not well enough. Yet. But those folks who surrounded my campfires in the 70s & 80s didn't seem to notice that. Or simply didn't care. Perhaps the "pass around" vodka saved me? Listen to Lauren. There's none better at what she provides on this platform. Practice, practice & then practice some more. And again, LTL (Listen to Lauren).
Very good lesson here. I have been playing and singing for a long time but my down fall is I always play and sing sitting. Tricky chord progressions also make me slip up from time to time but with practice I can usually nail them down. I have a real hard time playing guitar standing with a guitar strap. But I'm not in a band and only play and sing for my enjoyment. I am a new subscriber and so far have enjoyed everything you teach. Thanks!
Great process to get to the ultimate goal of singing along. Although in my case I might have to start with strumming while chewing gum, LOL. Thanks for the lesson, Lauren.

Thank you for you and your Father and of course laurenbateman
One of the best comments. Your Dad said it as it really is, and we can learn from that. Thank you.

Walkman reference I love it!

Perfect timing for me.

This is a good lesson. Especially because you emphasize the importance of taking it slow and easy.

Yes, I call those the stuck like glue chords. Good options.
U R incredible Lauren. U make things so simple & help fulfil my childhood dreams. And I spend about 3 hrs everyday with you practising 🎸. U R adorable. Thank U dear.
Wow, thank you!
Hey first of all you are very beautifully and the way u teach me more beautiful ❤️ lots of love from india
Thank you!
Oh awesome!!!
Very helpful, Lauren. Thank you! ❤️
You're so welcome!
Just what I needed Lauren if you haven’t seen my Facebook videos. I love to sing and play…

Your lessons are so practical and I started using them right away without any fluff. thank you.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
Lauren I love music and playing the guitar it takes a lot off your mind you have help with this than any instructor you bring it down to earth
Thank you 😀
This has got to be the best video tutorial you have ever done, this to me is your best video, cause I haven't learned to move or even stand up with my acoustic guitar and I'm gonna try it today,You said something earlier that was thought provoking,"You have to be able to change chords in between words, cause the song is still going on so you can't stop strumming, in essence you've become 2 different people in one performer,When I get a riff,I find a bridge then a chorus and when I put them together I always hum until the words come out, then when I get something, I sit down with my cellphone and record the music then I write words after that, then I sing and play at the same time while I'm perfecting the song..Thank You Mrs.Bateman, this lesson was right on point..Good Job!!!!😅😅🥰🥰🌷🌹💓⚘⚘💘💕🌹⚘💕🌷⚘⚘🌹⚘💓🌹💝🥰
Oh wow. Well I'm glad you think that. Yes trying moving around with the guitar.
I tried and dropped the pick in the sound hole on Rocketman by Elton John,Still gonna try🥰
Yeah, you got to get out of the comfort zone of playing those same patterns over and over again if you want to get to the next level.
You are a blessing Lauren !! I could play flute but never tried guitar. You inspired me. Thank you.
I'm so glad I was able to inspire you!
I ordered a Fender Digital tuner from Amazon. I would be so tickled to be able to do the strumming. A huge step for me. Thank you Lauren! Mike
Good luck. You will get it.
I needed this video so badly right now. Saw your Brown Eyed Girl video and thought I could tackle it first. I now realize I’m still way back on Step 1! Going to watch some TV and strum. Thanks Lauren!
Rock on Adam. One step at a time.
Thanks!,
I really enjoy your lessons. Your teaching ability is much better than others online. Just don’t tell anyone that I’m a mandolin player.
Thanks for that!
Thank you so much @lauren Bateman ❤️
You're welcome so much
Thanks, Lauren, your lessons are simple to follow. Your explanation is very clear. I have trouble holding the pick, as I play it moves. Please do advise.
Search Lauren Bateman how to hold your guitar pick
Been "playing" for 30+ years. This is an awesome lesson! Thanks Lauren.
Aww thanks!!
Wow! This lesson is just what I needed! Can you do a video on how to hold your pick and of the angle the pick must hit the strums please?
Already did that video. Search Lauren Bateman better sounding strums. The thumbnail is me holding at a pick at a wired angle.
Thank you Lauren you give us all hope
Ian, you're very welcome.
Love how you explain everything so well Lauren😊
Oh thank you!
That's awesome!
Cheers from Ireland, thanks for another great lesson
My pleasure!
i have really been struggling in this area and have watched many lessons on this.... yours is by far the best, thank you Lauren!!
Aww thanks Rocky!
Great stuff. Very helpful. Many thanks. All the best to you and yours, love from Scotland 🏴
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent tips , great lesson ! Thanks Lauren.
You're welcome!!
Good job, that is a great explanation and demo, thanks Lauren.
You got it.
This is so awesome. Glad to hear your strunning is on autopilot. That's a great achievement.
Okay, interesting. Thank you. God bless
You're very welcome
Walkman slow. You are hilarious. 😃. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed
Thank you so much for breaking this down, Lauren! You are such a great teacher. I love your videos!
Happy to help!
Yeah. Excellent breakdown.
Appreciate it!
Lol! "walkman battery dying down slow". Nice Laura you put in me in a reference there. I am still a student and I watch you for deconstructing things to make it simple. Thanks and cheers.
You are always welcome!
Excellent info shared with humour and your usual positive, cheerful vibe.
Thank you kindly Heather!
So happy to help!! What a great compliment from your wife too.
Hey I wanted to sing first.... 🎶
choirs in elementary school
boys Glee in Junior high
concert choir and
💈 Barber Shop Singers
and high school musicals,
Lil Abner, Carousel, The Sound of Music Oklahoma all that we did....
The guitar was always in the background but it was secondary ..
now it's first and singing is secondary....
Yeah that lead tenor voice is gone Lauren....
Thanks Teach.... 🍎
You got it Zayne

Brilliant instruction. Love your method and clarity.
Thanks so much!
your classes are class! thank you
Thank you!
Hi Nikki, it does get easier as you go for sure. Glad you enjoyed the lesson!
Thank you Lauren, I needed this video so much. Lots of great tips for strumming and singing at the same time.
Glad it was helpful!
Bravo Missy, informative lesson as always, thanks for teaching many skills besides playing the guitar,
this lesson being one, singing and playing, be safe and you're becoming a hit on YT and deservingly so.
Thank you! 😃
🤣🤣🤣 one step at a time. Save the Leg kicks for later. 😉
@@LaurenBateman lol , I love that you find the time to read & reply to our comments, thank you Ax
thanks a lot lauren! its another enlightenment day for a beginner like me who loves not only playing but also singing. thanks again!
Awesome
Fantastic video thanx so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This video is so on time for me. Been struggling with the idea of starting to sing while playing. Still haven't tried, but been thinking about it. This is exactly what I needed to get motivated. Thanks again for another great tutorial.
Sean glad to help. It's like tapping your head and rubbing your belly at the same time.
Thank you for an awesome lesson..❤
You are so welcome!
@@LaurenBateman i like how you just cut to the chase and put it in perspective…. 5 stars all day every day

Great one Lauren.Awesome.
Thank you!
Thank you so much Mam..It will surely going to help🇮🇳🇮🇳
Great!
Thanks!
John, thanks so much for subscribing. Tricky chord progressions can throw you off, but really focus on the strumming then the singing.
Very sweet Lauren thank you.
Any time!
This is soooo useful tutorial. Thanks 🙏🏼

Great process to get to the ultimate goal of singing along. Although in my case I might have to start with strumming while chewing gum, LOL. Thanks for the lesson, Lauren.
Thanks for watching!
Wow... This is a fantastic lesson!!!
