Justin's the best, man. He taught me so much. I picked up guitar again a few years ago. I used to play in high school but information was so scarce it was hard for me to figure anything out. With the advent of RUclips, it's only a matter of dedication. The information is at our fingertips thanks to Justin and many other teachers who make content. Justin's one of, if not THE, best teachers. He goes into so much detail and tries to put things in layman's terms which makes it accessible to anyone.
Your lessons give me this time of forgetting whatever problems I might have, and enjoy the sound of guitar! Thank you, Justin I’m 3 month into the lesson, learning zombie and house of rising sun.
Well, how did you know I’d been wondering how to do some percussive strumming? I love how you break down techniques in bite size chunks and provide us with both drills to practice and a nice tune we can use to show off what we have learned. You are a brilliant teacher and always manage to inspire me. Thanks for making guitar playing accessible to many by making so much of your content freely available.
I am 61 years old and 7 years ago , i started watching your videos on how to play guitar. Im not brilliant just intermedate. So thank you. George hails
Justin you are a LEGEND of a teacher. I have been struggling with this technique yet wanting to get it right for ages. 15 mins watching you on this video and I immediately correct my technique. I will soon be very much enjoying this technique in my songs ! Best teacher on RUclips ! thanks so much.
Although I'm and old git new player I found this quite easy and it helped me to count the beats in a bar, so I play it either every 4th beat or every 8th beat (2 x 4) , by using this method I actually managed to make up my own wee tune which I use to practice, however I do find it very hard to use the plectrum on the up and down strokes, down is easy but to come back up the plectrum moves around in my fingers and falls out.
I have your book Beginner's songbook, but only now seeing your video I realise you speak neurodivergent! I'm so used to not understanding a **** from teachers that this was a very pleasent surprise. Thank you @justinguitar ❤
Now I understand this technique a lot more! I’m a fairly experienced ‘silver haired advanced beginner’ but have shied away from songs using this technique! I have been trying to get the snare sound from the palm because I’ve understood that’s what RUclips tutors have been demonstrating? However, the later brake downs of your tutorial show the palm muting the strings (which I already got!) followed by the pick or finger strumming the muted strings and therefore making the snare sound - now I have it! Massive thank you
Hi Justin, just picking up the guitar- I am a complete beginner - I love your approach and teaching - so different and gentle! Thank you- you have a new fan!
At first I thought this was impossible but after a few days Im getting the hang of it. I still gotta practice on the right technique though but at the moment i find it easier to strum with my index instead of my thumb so my palm stays in the right spot
These are techniques you definitely want to try and do for one simple reason; not everyone utilizes it, so you sound unique. Secondly, adding a percussion sound to your guitar playing is priceless.
This lesson is pure gold. Showing it from just the right angle and breaking it down so clearly made me figure it out really fast. I even managed to do the strumming pattern with the upstums after just a couple minutes of practice. But the longest I can keep it going is 3 bars. This kind of strumming really makes the pick move around in my grip, and doing the percussive strum with a mispositioned pick is hard (and sometimes, even if I make it happen, I scrape my index finger on the strings). I gues I should practice it really slowly and pay attention to my pick grip?
I'm a ukulele player and found this extremely helpful. On ukulele we call this a chuck but same principle. I haven't been able to get it down until tonight, so thanks so much.
I find it very different from the ukulele. I use the side of the thumb on the ukulele but here we have to use the side of the hand. Mine is already sore.
@Ursula Myers you use both. The edge of your palm is to mute it, but your thumb is to strum. You'll figure it out. Just keep practicing. Being sore is part of the process lol I've got a big ol callous on my thumb now since the time of posting this comment.
I was waiting for this lesson from last couple of months . Finally you did a lesson on this technique . I am very thankful to you from the bottom of my heart .
there is an older lesson on this topic in the intermediate course. If you are looking for something specific, Justin probably already did it and you will find it on his homepage! (or youtube)
Man old habits are hard to break!! I’ve never kept my hand moving while strumming and brother the struggle is real trying to keep that hand a wrist going and not hit the strings 😂😂 I’m starting to get it thanks to the help from your videos! ✌️
Excellent lesson and a really handy rhythm strumming technique. Did the video. Started a little practice with it. Was a bit hit and miss at first; but surprisingly quickly I started to get it. Next thing I knew I found myself putting it to perfect use playing The Beatles Two of Us. Such a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Carry on and many thanks!
Love Justin's teaching. Very through and easy to follow even if you are a beginner. Has an awesome web page. If you haven't checked it out please do so. One of the best I have come across. Thank you Justin.
Hi Justin! I'm having a hard time finding this video on your website (I like figuring out where it fits into the learning path). Please consider adding that to your description! :) Thanks for all the great lessons.
oh these are part of Justin's new 2020 beginner course he saw a "need" (not saying its bad) to update the course and with covid it was just a good time to work on it, he mentioned it in an interview somewhere. its basically technique based and he would assign "homework" (like a pattern, a song, riff, and/or lick) edit- the 2020 stuff is a different beginner course its like a part 2 of technical stuff
Man! I was playing along, with you, on our site. Suddenly, a loud knock at the door; a Breedlove Companion! YES. I have graduated. The sound is AMAZING!
@@justinguitar I am from India and at 47, I have been following your course from website and I practice daily, it's almost 8 months since I started. I am thankful to you.
Really great lesson, Justin - many thanks for so many useful hints! (especially about the palm muting technique and sequencing the moves). Definitely in my top 5 on strumming at YT.
You give a really good lesson, the procusssive strum is something that I really want to learn and have made a few unsuccessful runs at already. Ha ha, I hadn’t even noticed the glare until you captioned it✌️
Might I just say, you are my newest RUclips crush. PS its not JUST your very handsomeness, but the caring way you present your lessons. Such warmth. Cheers to you and your family. 🙂
Thank you so much!! This is extremely informative and a huge revelation for many of us. However, I’m still not completely clear on how Donovan gets his percussive strumming on the song Pamela, Jo or even on mellow yellow. Simple beat, but he mutes every strum so perfectly.
Great teacher, thanks. You're idea of making it look easy reminds me of the Father Ted effort and My Lovely Donkey, where he say, "wait, I can get this cord".
This is a great lesson -- thanks! One thing I noticed while working on this is that the placement of the palm muting hand helps determine how much sound (if any) can be heard on the strings. If the muting hand is positioned closer to the bridge, there is more of the true resonance of the strings (muting is less effective). If the hand is closer to the neck, there is absolutely zero resonance (muting is extremely effective). Hope this helps others learning this technique. Again -- thanks!
Great video - really enjoyed that. At 15:17 Justin mentions doing long practice sessions on a simple strumming pattern, trying to get it to feel as good as he can. I'd like to know more about these practice sessions - perhaps a video about that?
it sounds great but i am just starting out on playing electric guitar and acoustic!! this will come in later down the road when i get used to the up, down, up, down pattern with the chord changes because this seems a bit advanced for me!!
Check out this easy blues shuffle for beginners! ruclips.net/video/xWexaS61NwY/видео.html
Thanks 👍.. this was simple but forgotten by me 👍 I going tot play CCR to practice this till i can do it in my sleep 🙂
