    Six has the classic Porsche "wail" when pushed. The four sounds like an enduro motorcycle I recall hearing as a child (i.e.: not good). At idle, both have their unique +/-'s , but in this case the sound of the six supercedes the performance of the turbo 4.
    Performance is not always the #1 factor.

    The 6 all the way... nothing beats that beefy redonkulous robust sound. Music to my ears.

    Normally I'm a fan of engines with more cylinders because of the high sound but damn, the 4 sounds so raw and the anti lag is so insane.

      and they relied less on PDK so better manual handling in tight curves with direct feedback

    First video that I have seen that shows the real difference for the sound, other videos do show that they both have their own sound, but don’t let you hear just how differently they sound when you hear them taking off away from you. The six cylinder definitely sounds better in that regard. Thanks

    Beautiful comparison. I personally like the flat 4 a lot, because it sounds deeper. Some custom exhaust flat 4's sound pretty similar to a V8

    I personally like the flat 6 better. I've heard both side by side and I went with the flat 6. Performance is better with the new turbo charged 4, but it wasn't enough for me to buy the new Cayman GTS.

      Les performances sont nettement meilleures avec le GTS 981 qu'avec le 718 cayman s. Seul le 718 GTS affiche de relatives meilleures performances en reprise mais loin derrière en accélération. 12,6 au 400 m DA pour le 981 Gts et 13.1 pour le 718 gts et 13.4 pour la version s. Le 0 a 100 > 4.4 s pour le 981 et 5.0 pour le gts 718 et 4.8 s pour la version s. 981 gts est vraiment un must.... sonorité, plaisir et performance !

    The majority of these comments are no doubt made by people who do not own a Porsche 4 or 6 nvm driven one so if have plan on buying one do yourself a favor a test drive the new 718 before dismissing them outright becuase of some random's comment.

      I dont own one and have never driven either. With that said the 6 sounds so much better and sound is a big part of my sports car buying decisions.

      Exactly what I did and bought it on the spot. Drove a used almost new 6 and then drove a new 718 and loved the torque. The turbo four developed power sooo much sooner and just felt like a faster car. Funny thing is I never really put my foot into the new 718 because well, it was new. Both were manuals and both were base models loaded with options. Did the 6 sound better...yes, was it a deal breaker...no. The 4 in real life (not recorded on a phone cam) sounds better than you would think. I watched a lot of videos and read tons of comments and had pretty much decided the 6 was the way I would go. Then I drove the turbo 4 and was pleasantly surprised that is has a nice low snarl to it. Best part is because of the reluctance of the populace to accept the 718 I was able to get a new one out the door within a few thou of the 2 year old car. Win win.

      @@101ktm But can always enjoy the Flat 6. In a Porsche with a flat 4, die hard Boxster fans would be asking "Am I driving a shitty Subaru?". The key ingredient for Boxsters and Caymans is the sound from a flat 6 engine which can be enjoyed 24/7!
      You might be able to enjoy the Flat 4 engined Porsche UNTIL a Subaru WRX STI parks up next to you and rev their throatier Boxer 4! Your ears will bleed and you'll be crying when that happens!

      T8PolestarCyan lol your just mad that my Turbo 4 banger is faster that your 6. all critics agree the turbo 4 beats the old 6 in every way but the sound. A sports car is about performance my friend. Yes sound is part of it (if it had no sound like a Tesla I wouldn’t buy it) but it definitely has sound. Please don’t be butt hurt that your 6 cyl. Cayman loses to a car that sounds like a Subaru. Sports cars are about performance!

      @@101ktm When driving European Sports cars, it's also about sounds. They often have their distinctive character.
      BTW you can often enjoy good engine noises especially when you can't speed. Not to mention that cops are often busy giving speeding tickets!

    4 sounds nice, although not as strong as you would like from a sports car. 6 sounds amazing! Personally, I would rather have the 4 cylinder Porsche just because of price, but I do agree with Porsche purests that the 6 is the best sounding engine.

    Oh my god. I do have a 987 and it sounds INSANE with soul longtube headers and carnewal gt exhausts along with fabdpeed x pipe, evoms air intake and desnorkel and ive kind of gotten used to it BUT i did not "think" the 718 sounded 'bad' but side by side the 718 is complete bs and it sounds horrible and all the critics were right that a flat 6 is legendary

    I've got the flat 4 gts. I feel like I would get a better experience driving with the sound of the flat 6, however outside the cars both sound good, just different.
    If I had my time back I would have gotten the flat 6

    The six has a better exhaust note, but the turbo four in the 718 makes more power. Depends on what is most important to you. I was looking for a 2016 with the flat six until I drove the turbo four. The turbo motor has a bit more horsepower and a lot more torque earlier in the rev range with stronger acceleration.

      Basih you would be surprised at how good it sounds in person. The 6 is still better imo but with the pdk in the new S models they haul ass haha

      I own a Subaru and a Porsche, both with flat sixes and I love them. Even though I'm biased towards the flat 6 I still appreciate the Flat 4's, it's just that for me the Flat 4 soundtrack fits better with the rally looking Subaru rather than the sporty Porsche. I'm sure the performance is great in the new 718 but I'm eagerly waiting for the 718 GT4 with the 4.0L flat 6.

      I think the 4 has a better sounding idle with the grumble, otherwise the six has that iconic Porsche sound when reved up.

    The four cylinder sounds a little like a Volkswagen Beetle with the Empi Sideflow exhaust and the CB Performance 2332 CC EFI Engine.

    I dunno, I like the 4. Deeper more growl. 6 you gotta push it so hard to hear it wail, so will your neighborhood cops lol. In a world where I could rev high alll day, 6 would be nice to have to go high RPM, but normal everyday driving, you’re mostly less that 4k RPM and the 4 sounds more growl and I’m sure more torque to boot!! Both amazing though but just my personal preference

    The reason I have not bought a new Cayman S is because of the 4 cylinder. If i wanted a sup-up VW motor I would have bought a Jetta.

    What a con job this is! The 981 is still in first gear (with a manual trans) when it passes the fifth tree on the right side of the road. In the 982 acceleration demo at 1:32, that car is clearly equipped with a PDK and it's already in THIRD GEAR by the same tree! Someone has deliberately skewed the performance by keeping the revs low on the 718.

      58icarus wow, I felt the same way. Bogus test. Lots of 6 owners unhappy the turbo 4 banger is faster, handles better and has better technology. Times change. If I was going to buy just one for the rest of my life it would be the six as I feel a naturally aspirated 6 would survive the need for rapid acceleration every time I drove it better than the turbo 4. But, all I’ve read (and watched) about the 718 by the pros who really drive these cars say with the exception of the "not as good" sound the new turbo 4 wins in all other ways. My 2 for what it’s worth.

      @@101ktm Actually, because the turbo engines (four or six, doesn't matter) develop maximum torque much lower in the rpm range than their equivalent naturally aspirated siblings, you don't need to push the engine as much to get performance. It's why the 982 version's 2-litre F4 turbo (300 hp) in a base model is faster than the larger 3.4-litre F6 (325 hp) in the 981 S model.

      58icarus agreed however the turbo is an additional mechanical piece that like all things mechanical will require additional maintenance or replacement at some point. As we all know all things related to Porsche parts/maintenance are not inexpensive. Not knocking the turbo 4 (I own one) but the flat 6 will never need a turbo rebuild, intercooler replacement, etc..

    Finally Porsche 2020 models are “once again” equipped with a flat 6 I was starting to lose faith in the Cayman line up. The over reviving turbo flat 4 tin can sound was so disappointing. It was a bad idea to begin with...even though they tried to improve the sound with sport exhaust options. The flat 6 engine is robust raw visceral and has a full range of orchestrated high and low notes that whimsically sing to an Porsche Aficionado owner. It’s what a Porsche sounds like either on the Autobahn or a Sunday drive on the PCH. It’s too bad that Porsche forgot and we’re to stubborn to fix it at the time...

      harold feldberg First, the only confirmed F6 car is the GT4. Rumors of an F6 GTS, but only rumors. Meanwhile go listen to the rev off between the 981 GT4 and the 982. You’re getting a F6 that sounds like crap.

    The only reason they changed it to the 4 cylinder is because people were starting to prefer the cayman over the 911 due to it having more balance, control and basically having the same engine. Plus, it’s cheaper. So now they sabotage it and surprise nobody carea about the 718. Porsche can either discontinue the 718 or just bring back the NA 6 cylinders

      @@Meatwad650 One month straight. Through Canada. My friend owns a 911 a 718 cayman s. Drove incredible, sounded like a dyson vacum. Its common knowledge, im not in the minority nor am i trolling. compared to the 987 and 981 it doesnt have the iconic tone.

    I have a 981 Boxster S and the six is sublime. This 718 isn’t a Porsche. It’s an embarrassment.

      The first 911s came with a 4-cylinder tho...If a 4 cylinder can make the Boxster more affordable for the everyday man, then heck yeah! How often do you use even 50% of your Porsche's performance? I bet that most people don't even use 10% of what their Porsche can do! Even on a twisty road, the engine's peak power doesn't matter. The car just needs great suspension and this 4-cylinder has that. It has everything you need...except for the low grumbling V6 sound! However, a stock 6 cylinder boxster is also a quiet car...so I would not mind driving the 4-cylinder model!

    4 cylinder is ok for a 914, but is out of place in a Cayman. I know, their excuse is fuel economy....but we know the real reason, too close to 911 performance.

    OMG!! One of the most blatantly biased RUclips clips I've ever seen! In the first comparison, the flat-6 is much closer to us (i.e., the microphone) than the turbo 4, so of course it sounds much more immediate. The 4 sounds feeble. Now listen to the revs of the flat-6 at 0:13. He revs it far higher than the 4, so of course it will sound more exciting.
    Second, he does the exact same thing when he drives the cars. In the flat-6 (0:58 - 1:23), he selects an engine mode that shifts the gears at much higher rev points than the 4 (0:48 - 0:55). The 4 sounds as if it is in Comfort Mode.
    Third, notice the amount of time he takes in driving the flat-6 (0:58 - 1:23): 25 seconds, compared to 7 seconds for the 4 (0:48 - 0:55) (plus a few more courtesy seconds at the end, at which point you’ve written the 4 off anyway).
    Fourth, he doesn't tell us if the 4 cylinder is the anemic 2.0 liter Cayman or the better-sounding, more muscular 2.5 liter Cayman S. If you are going to compare two engines, at least do it on a fair basis. I can't believe so many of you fell for it.
