Hi Roger, Just want to say a huge thank you, because it was this video that made me want to pursue my dream of Porsche Cayman 981 ownership. I found this video last spring while I was doing my homework as to what vehicle to buy upon my upcoming retirement. When it actually came to my retirement date in July 2019 I actually didn’t buy a Cayman 981,as I was scared off by its ownership costs. So I purchased a lesser vehicle new with the thought of practical long term ownership, unfortunately I just could not get the thought out of my head of owning a Porsche Cayman 981. I kept watching this and many video reviews like it and eventually in January of this year I actually bought one!,as I thought you only live once and this would be my last chance to fulfill one of my dreams. It’s not an S but I am besotted with it,I viewed many both manual and PDK and I found due to a leg injury I sustained a few years ago,the PDK gearbox was the obvious choice and I don’t regret it at all. It is a base Cayman in Rhodium silver with GTS rear lights and sits on 20” Carrera wheels and looks stunning. Sorry to ramble on but I will finish by saying, thank you for helping me to realise my dream of Porsche ownership. Stay safe and all the very best. Phil
Currently driving a '16 370z, fun car. But was tossed up with the previous model porsche cayman s. Came from a miata nb. Pretty certain I'm going to upgrade in a cpl of years to this cayman s. Miss the balanced handling of the miata, but would like that with a bit more power than my 370 puts down. Sexy ass cayman.
@@spencer963 I traded my 981 for a 718 last November...it is such a freakin awesome car. It gets a lot of hate from the the sound of the 4 cylinder, but otherwise it's such a far superior car to the 981 in every other way.
@Bruno Desrosiers the 1st point is for concealed advertising only, because I am not buying that terrible noise anecdote... how is it not illegal to wear noise cancelling headphones?! You must be able to hear the traffic.
As a 981 GTS owner, I recommend tossing those headphones in the trash! Just keep the engine above 4,000 RPM and it will drown out the tinnitus! Great video.
I go to sleep at night playing a recording of either the sound of the 991.2 GT3 Flat 6 reving to red line or the 981 GTS Cayman reving to redline. Now my gf beats me with a broom stick because she say's she can't get away from the engine noise in the cars or in the bed...but it's worth it thank you very much.
Got a 2016 2.7 PDK 981 Cayman 6 weeks ago as daily driver. As an overall package I think it’s better than my 997 turbo! Fab sound, handling, plenty of power for a daily. 45 mpg on motorway! Love it
Great Video Roger....Thanks. One small PDK tip relating to your point 3, if you simply stab the throttle and release, the car will downshift to the optimum gear in readiness to go, it will hold this state for a few seconds waiting for you to nail it, so perfect if you are thinking of going for a pass on a twisty road. If you don’t give it the beans the PDK will return to the higher gear and settle down again.
Good heavens Roger Bailey Stephen Spielberg’s got nothing on you. absolutely Brilliant. The camerawork, presentation, description, passion, knowledge of the product, awesome(not biased) totally agree 981 six cylinder dream machine. Respect from Chips
The PDK really needs the sports steering wheel with the proper "flappy paddles". The normal buttons are awkward an not really intuitive, and the PDK-lever works opposite to what you'd expect (forward is gear up, backwards is gear down. All other car makes, incl modern Porsches work just the other way around). And as said below it actually does have a flat tyre kit in the front boot. But the rest of your video is spot on! I love my 981!
Roger, the "noise" you speak of is pure music to me when I run my 2016 981 S through the six manual gears I chose. I agree with you on every other point. Every drive is a thrill. Great video!
Roger you are a master!!! This was brilliant enjoyed every second of it and could clearly see that that this must have been one of your favourites. Good job mate
Whoo, I saw your video of the Skoda Kodiaq and I was already impressed of your video editing skills. But this video is even much better. Funny, curious and professional again. Thumb up for me!
This is my first time being introduced to your taste and style of designing a RUclips video. I really enjoyed it. Great job Roger. From the USA - Utah.
Honestly this video is impressively done, you've earned a sub. I'd suggest making the music much quieter when those wonderful car noises are playing. The enormous production value of the video shows in the wide variety of shots you've used. You've clearly gone to painstaking lengths to shoot so many angles. Noticed and appreciated, Roger! The sound work is pretty good aside from the music being overall a bit loud (esp. during car noises), and you could in time think about upgrading your equipment. You've worked very well with the tools in front of you. This video was made with the same attention to detail that the car represents! How fitting.
Have one too. A few points though. The front tire chatter has to do with geometry. Tire selection makes a difference as well... the OE pirelli rubber does it more than the PS4S rubber I have now. Ambient temps are the final factor. Gear selection is less of an issue if you press the pedal past the kick down detent. Agree about manual selection... very fun.
Thanks for Point 2 - was slightly concerned with my 718. I know there are many differences not least 6 vs 4 cylinders but I really enjoy mine with the PDK box too. One other point maybe worth mentioning is the brakes - if you are light on them, they are prone to squeak - use them hard! Great video - thank you
Nice video, there is a tyre inflater standard in a every porsche. In the 981 it is in the front close to youre battery. There is a little box with a tyre picture on it. That is where the tyre inflater is stored
I have the same car... great fun for five years and 50000miles. Btw. There’s a tyre inflator supplies by Porsche; it’s packed nearly in a box hidden under the front scuttle panel
majid batran hi, no significant issues... a few punctures, two that needed roadside assistance. Otherwise it’s been hassle free motoring for six years and nearly 60k miles.
Ive got the 4th gen Cayman purchased at the begining of this years Uk Summer. The car's performance is quite simply incredible. I looked at similarly priced hot hatches that offer better preformance figures and are designed well to be a decent competitor but decided against it. Im so glad i did. Residule prices remain quite strong, running costs are decent, maintenance, fuel & insurance, its cheaper to insure than my Q7. Its one of the only cars ive had when you are cruising the fuel gauge goes up. Tryes expect to pay around 450 for a set of rears and thats for p zeros which you will replace before the fronts not unless you are tracking. The positive attention was really nice too, from all ages people asking questions, kids taking photos it truly has been a joyful experience. It even gets the approval from the superbike fraternity which suprised me. Forget anything else that you may have your eye on, test drive one and you'll be smitten. I covered 10'000 miles in mine this year bringing my total to 24k on the clock not once did it misbehave but does get a bit skittish around the 170mph mark analysing this characteristic its not a straighline car but a cornering machine supplying you with mountains of confidenxe with its capabilities, the feedback you get is rewarding which only puts a smile on your face wether driving or looking at it while having a coffee and seeing other people enjoy it from afar. Stay safe and all the best 👍
Nice shoot. You really put the time in on this cut. I aspire to 'go drone' soon myself and this video really moved that to the fore. You make me miss my 981-GTS. I'll take solace in my 'new to me' 987.2 Spyder. Thanks for the effort.
Roger Bailey Oh, yes, it's a keeper! Couldn't bring myself to take the 981 to the track. Went down a few thousand and now I'm after it on the auto-x circuits!
Wow Roger that was an amazing video! You have fantastic video, editing, music and content. This video is brilliant. I am first time watcher but you have one new sub. Fantastic work. Thank you :)
The tire studder when backing up at slow speeds scared the hell out me the first time. It was when i had the car from the dealer for the weekend and i thought i scrapped the curb my heart dropped.
I’m now in my late 60s….a long time owner of a 944s2 Cabriolet, that I “gifted myself” the year I turned 50 which coincided with the same year that I was promoted to O6 Captain, US Navy. I love the car, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to wanting a late model 911. But….the more I research, the more I envy the Cayman. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet….but I’m awfully close. Now on the fence of a 6spd manual….or the PDK. Any issues that I should be aware of with each? And you’re right….that Cayman coupe? It is truly “art on wheels”!
LOVE cars! Oh heck..I LOVE to drive, ride, Captain (cars, motorcycles and boats..licensed for all.) I wish ALL cars came in manual trans! Sooo much more control! Found you on JAMES LIVE #Iamacreator Supported and Thumbs up!
Your make a bloody good salesman mate , I enjoyed how much you like this car , and may have even convinced me to buy one too next year I've been thinking about it for a while
Nice video - Thanks. The clunk you hear while moving with the steering wheel at full lock is due to the Ackerman steering. One wheel is turning more sharply than the other. It's much more noticeable on my cars when the tires are cold and goes away as the tread reaches temperature.
i got 2 boxsters but will be buying my FAV which of course is a CAYMAN. yur video is the best i've seen. i look forward to some of those '1 fingered' waves. TALLY HO from Houston TX.
Hi there! i am looking on googlemaps to rent a car in Nice and i found your review of the Avis branch at the trainstation.:) Any idea which company so use? Thanks
TRAVEL ADDICT 18 hey! my only complaint with avis & budget is that they promise you one model of car but nearly always give you an alternative, they dont even stock the car i chose! I felt mislead.I've never had such a problem with Sixt who i will always choose to use from now on. Happy Travels !!
Thanks! All the companies have a lot of bad reviews and in France the cars cost much more than other places that i rented. Anyway, i need a car for to days, i would not brake the bank.
What extra features would the GTS version add to this car? Are these worth the extra price? When you use it as a daily drivers car as well as to have some fun in the weekends.
I,ve been kicking around the idea of getting one of these cars. It seems like the perfect sports car to own with perfect power to weight ratio!🏆🏁 Thanks for sharing the seven important facts. I might actually pick up a pair of headphones to avoid more tinnitus.😊
As an owner of a greatly specced 981 myself, I agree with you totally. One thing I’ll correct you on, and am surprised you didn’t say, the car comes with an air compressor and tyre gel in the event of a flat. Hope I never need it. Mine is now running on Michelin PS 4S and they have taken the car to a whole new level in handling. Keep up the good work.
Good video roger. I have to say, as an owner of a 2105 2.7 pdk cayman, point 3 @4.26 in, to me, i find myself totally disagreeing . To me its ALWAYS in th right gear when in automatic mode. Everything else i agree with. What a machine. After 2yrs of ownership, il say what i said when i decribed it to my brother afyer my very first drive of it......more than th steering, sharpness, throttle response etc....'what a gearbox!' It really is the best i have driven
My thoughts are on the 987 model, but here is my list of 7 things you should know about the Cayman S. 1) It's awesome 2) It's awesome 3) It's awesome 4) It's awesome 5) It's awesome 6) It's awesome 7) It's crap. I mean awesome.
Thank you for this video. I saw it before I bought my 981 and it was a relief knowing about point 2 beforehand when I experienced the tires scudding for the first time. Had I not known about it I would have thought that I had broken it for sure.
The Flat 6’s are definitely keepers.....I have a ‘14 S I bought new ......14,000 miles, pdk, sport chrono, sport steering wheel with paddles, and titanium colored 20’s....never selling her.
I have a 2007 Porsche 987 Cayman S with currently 407,000 mile on the odo...Purchased from Brumos with 42k on the odo. Original engine, NO IMS issues... Headers, GT3 Manifold, Flashed the chip 365BHP... Bilstein R 9 shocks, Machined short throw shifter, light weight flywheel... This car is ALL of THAT! The magic of changing the oil and filter with Mobil ONE or other Full Synthetic every 5-6,000 miles is the ticket... It's a "sleeper" for the street... 0-60 about 4 flat... So do not hesitate to buy a pre-owned 987 even with 100k on it... Really so long as the records are good... You'll have minimal issues... Fuel oil separator, coolant flush annually... New sport clutch at 350k. GREAT CAR! Kind of rare as most are turned into race cars...
Is this for real? I tempted to get a 987 but the mileage is on the high side of 100,000km. Your figure is in miles? 400,000miles is 640,000kms! I intend to maintain it with fully synthetic oil every 10,000km. That’s about every 6,000miles. Would love to hear more from your experiences.
Amazing video Roger, superb footage and love the way your edit this. Very enjoyable watch. Thanks for sharing, thanks for your continued support to our channel :) Sarah & Andrew.
HI Roger.I just watched your report on the Cayman. Super job. I bought a 2010 Gen 2 which is not an S but the performance is very close and road tax a lot less. Same upholstery but manual. Notice you're local to me too recognised the landscape . Looking forward to the summer now although we miss the Boxster we parted with in December. Graham CH61
Great video. I'm a proud owner of a 981 S and I agree this is the best car in its class and for the money. By the way Porsche does include a tire inflation device in all Porsches. I saw it by the battery in your video.
any really Kevin, they all offer very similar levels of enjoyment, just make sure its fully serviced, get it checked independently, and older ones check ims bearing is fixed.
Roger, im looking at buying one of these probably at the13-14 plate, but I've also wondered apart from having the slightly dated interior is there much downside to purchasing an older model at around 09-10? it seems you can shave off a good 4-6k just going a few years backward, thanks
I hear the older 987 model generally reliable, ensure a full service history, known faults are the notorious IMS bearing failure, coil springs, main oil seal failure, there is plenty of information available, personally I'd buy one and use it, - great car.

I'm not a porsche guy, but I was very upset when they replaced the flat 6 in the cayman and boxter with the turbo flat 4 in the 718. It's just not right.
Glad I see this, I experienced point 2 shortly after I bought a used 13 Boxster, fortunately it’s normal. But somehow this doesn’t happen on my brand new winter tire and rims
Roger Bailey yes, looked into that. checked the picture of 981's front suspension, their race car like Ackerman geometry design doesn’t compensate low speed tight turns.
This is the kind of vids I like, loud cars, aggro music and drone shots. Who would've thought the thing actually appreciated after owning it for months? -A
I own a Cayman S Sport, Limited Edition #252 for many years. Zero issues with the car, handling is superior to any other car I ever had and as you have correctly stated, the value has in fact gone up. Especially in my case, as it is a limited edition,, low mileage, and still in showroom condition. Just had it's first 'major service' where the spark plugs and filters were replaced. That cost less than a minor repair on my Chrysler PT Cruiser! (Needed the clutch cable replaced as the little retaining clip on the gearbox side had fallen off. Off course the dealer had no spare clips only complete cables). That cost $500!!!
@@esoterex New engine design, no IMS bearing and 2.9 vs original 2.7 with IMS bearing. 👍 1st gen Cayman body. Even the base 2009 with PDK is faster than the manual S
Nice Vid! I'm on my 3rd Cayman (a 2007 987 base, a 2014 981 base, and a newly acquired 2015 S with Chrono and only 8.000 miles!). I couldn't agree with you more about the desirability of these cars. From looks (especially the 981's) to performance, you can't find a bigger bang for the buck!
yes the Carrera has more power, is faster and feels larger and more refined, also has two small rear seats which the Cayman does not have. Some say the Cayman handles better but you need to be a very fast driver to notice.

Decided to give up my S2000. Great car, but my God, my new to me 981 Cayman S (2014) is all you said it was. I am madly in love with this car!
Banana shake at McDonalds? Ok that does it, I’m moving to UK! And oh yes, well done video & what a beautiful 981 CS!
Isn't the tire repair kit inside the front booth hidden behind the lower rear panel?
beautiful car, done justice through gorgeous editing

love your comment
I'm from the Cayman Islands, so I was immediately drawn to this video. lol. Beautiful car! Love it!!
Gina Welds Hulse how nice for you to live in the beautiful Cayman islands, I went there in 1996, thanks for looking in
Thanks for the great video.
I am considering purchasing one in the next few months, this video is really tugging on my heart strings.
Thanks Roger.
Glad it was helpful!
LOVE cars! Oh heck..I LOVE to drive, ride, Captain (cars, motorcycles and boats..licensed for all.) I wish ALL cars came in manual trans! Sooo much more control! Found you on JAMES LIVE #Iamacreator Supported and Thumbs up!
Your make a bloody good salesman mate , I enjoyed how much you like this car , and may have even convinced me to buy one too next year I've been thinking about it for a while
Khaos969 thanks - if you do try & find a cherished example
Nice video - Thanks. The clunk you hear while moving with the steering wheel at full lock is due to the Ackerman steering. One wheel is turning more sharply than the other. It's much more noticeable on my cars when the tires are cold and goes away as the tread reaches temperature.
Jacob Knudsen thanks for sharing this
i got 2 boxsters but will be buying my FAV which of course is a CAYMAN. yur video is the best i've seen. i look forward to some of those '1 fingered' waves.
The main GTS items are alcantara trim, 20mm lower suspension, slight power improvement, & GTS tends to hold it's value a bit better.
We would like to invite you to our Sunday Live at 2pm EST #IamAcreator You will be in the news portion "Imports"
I,ve been kicking around the idea of getting one of these cars. It seems like the perfect sports car to own with perfect power to weight ratio!🏆🏁
Thanks for sharing the seven important facts.
Keep up the good work.
interesting to hear the PS4S have improved it so much, and yes theres a tyre compressor there under the front panel, I just never found it !
Good video roger. I have to say, as an owner of a 2105 2.7 pdk cayman, point 3 @4.26 in, to me, i find myself totally disagreeing . To me its ALWAYS in th right gear when in automatic mode. Everything else i agree with.
What a machine.
After 2yrs of ownership, il say what i said when i decribed it to my brother afyer my very first drive of it......more than th steering, sharpness, throttle response etc....'what a gearbox!' It really is the best i have driven
yes PDK is the best auto box there is, cayman one of the best cars made
My thoughts are on the 987 model, but here is my list of 7 things you should know about the Cayman S.
1) It's awesome
2) It's awesome
3) It's awesome
4) It's awesome
5) It's awesome
6) It's awesome
7) It's crap. I mean awesome.
The Runs awesome comment 👍!
Really well made videos man, honestly. Keep it up. Peace, JR.
Jake Roman
thank you, really appreciate your comment
Thank you for this video. I saw it before I bought my 981 and it was a relief knowing about point 2 beforehand when I experienced the tires scudding for the first time. Had I not known about it I would have thought that I had broken it for sure.
Glad it helped
The Flat 6’s are definitely keepers.....I have a ‘14 S I bought new ......14,000 miles, pdk, sport chrono, sport steering wheel with paddles, and titanium colored 20’s....never selling her.
sounds like a great example
Nice to see some cruising up and down the front in New Brighton there, and a few other familiar Wirral spots. Well put together video, nice one!
I have a 2007 Porsche 987 Cayman S with currently 407,000 mile on the
odo...Purchased from Brumos with 42k on the odo. Original engine, NO
IMS issues... Headers, GT3 Manifold, Flashed the chip 365BHP... Bilstein
R 9 shocks, Machined short throw shifter, light weight flywheel... This
car is ALL of THAT! The magic of changing the oil and filter with
Mobil ONE or other Full Synthetic every 5-6,000 miles is the ticket...
It's a "sleeper" for the street... 0-60 about 4 flat... So do not
hesitate to buy a pre-owned 987 even with 100k on it... Really so long
as the records are good... You'll have minimal issues... Fuel oil
separator, coolant flush annually... New sport clutch at 350k. GREAT
CAR!
Fun video. I don’t miss my 987 Cayman S ONLY because I replaced it with a 997 GTS. They are both great cars!
Amazing video Roger, superb footage and love the way your edit this. Very enjoyable watch. Thanks for sharing, thanks for your continued support to our channel :) Sarah & Andrew.
Cornish Walking Trails thank you so much for looking in
HI Roger.I just watched your report on the Cayman.
This really has helped Roger - now it’s 2020 what is the year and model Cayman you would pick today for a £25,000 - £30,000 budget?
any really Kevin, they all offer very similar levels of enjoyment, just make sure its fully serviced, get it checked independently, and older ones check ims bearing is fixed.
Super video! Super camerawork & presentation! The sound from that Porsche is awesome...👍
Construction Machines Channel your comment means a lot, thank you
i heard there was a tire repair kit in a hidden compartment in the frunk?
Hi came here from seeing your comment on Pedal Loud , and have now subscribed, looks like you have some great content 👍🏻 Steve from London UK
steve march great to hear from you, thanks for the sub !!
Cheers from America mate, great informative video. I shall begin my search
Hello Allen, from England, hope you find one - Roger
Roger, im looking at buying one of these probably at the13-14 plate, but I've also wondered apart from having the slightly dated interior is there much downside to purchasing an older model at around 09-10? it seems you can shave off a good 4-6k just going a few years backward, thanks
I hear the older 987 model generally reliable, ensure a full service history, known faults are the notorious IMS bearing failure, coil springs, main oil seal failure, there is plenty of information available, personally I'd buy one and use it, - great car.
@@RogerBaileyOnCarsExcellent thanks for that, ill do my due diligence! Great channel btw :)
amazing video .... i love porche and the countdown is a nice touch
CorreteandoT2
thank you, really appreciating your comment
I gave up at 2:30.......... pissed at myself for not bailing sooner.
i have the most highly speced drop top 2016 981 gts ever made with a 112k sticker and have to say its a complete ball, good points and great video.
Such an awesome video, awesome accent and awesome car! You made a perfect circle! It looks so luxurious from the inside!👌👍
Karla Cook thank you so much, such nice words
@@RogerBaileyOnCars hahaha out of all the people who commented on your video you only responded to hers. .... and wrote “such nice words” you’re hilarious mate. Mid life crisis much? Go to a bar you might have a better chance ;)

I'm not a porsche guy, but I was very upset when they replaced the flat 6 in the cayman and boxter with the turbo flat 4 in the 718. It's just not right.
I'll probably never own one, but that car is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Great video! Thanks for sharing, Roger. :-)
Adele Celeste thank you for looking in :-)
The best car video I've seen in my life .
Just picked up a ‘13 plate. My first Porsche.
F me it’s glorious. The hype makes sense now !
Glad I see this, I experienced point 2 shortly after I bought a used 13 Boxster, fortunately it’s normal. But somehow this doesn’t happen on my brand new winter tire and rims
F M the tire scrub is reportedly worse on summer tires
Roger Bailey yes, looked into that. checked the picture of 981's front suspension, their race car like Ackerman geometry design doesn’t compensate low speed tight turns.
This is the kind of vids I like, loud cars, aggro music and drone shots. Who would've thought the thing actually appreciated after owning it for months?
-A
@roger, would you buy another cayman 981 or other?
i'd enjoy owning another 981 but unlikely to do so for the foreseeable
I own a Cayman S Sport, Limited Edition #252 for many years. Zero issues with the car, handling is superior to any other
car I ever had and as you have correctly stated, the value has in fact gone up.
Sepp Stoxreiter
Sounds like you have a truly great car there, a keeper I would hope,
What year?

My dream car right there sir! Nice video.
This was a very enjoyable and informative video, Roger!
addicted2speed
thanks for saying this, really appreciated
Great video Roger, point 8; Porsche put the tyre inflator In a compartment on the left-hand side in the front boot, they're not that mean
thanks, and you are correct, I subsequently discovered point 8
My Porsche 911 carrera gts 2014 was to loud started to get fatigued on long journeys. I’ve always preferred manual over pdk. I’d prefer 718 spyder
You're such an awesome dude!
And an excellent video...Liked and Subscribed! ☺️
Great video! I'm considering the Cayman and the Carrera. Can anyone tell me what the Carrera does that is better than the Cayman?
yes the Carrera has more power, is faster and feels larger and more refined, also has two small rear seats which the Cayman does not have. Some say the Cayman handles better but you need to be a very fast driver to notice.
Great car, engine, and exhaust then wear headphones? Why spend over $3k for the PDK then use it to shift yourself?
brilliant review glad I found this channel
Hi Rodger, great video! Super enjoyable! We had an '06 Boxster S and it was awesome!
Heidi and Franny's Garage Hi, thanks for looking in, Boxster S is a superb sports car
This video is really cool Roger, the later one you've done of the newer car is even better imo
Hey thanks Shaun, thought I'd pin a link to it: Porsche Cayman 718 : ruclips.net/video/ql6_oxRM66o/видео.html

Future classic no doubt. Currently saving up to replace my corsa with a 987

Awesome video bro. How really put your own personal experiences in this video. I have a 328xi now. I’m really thinking about getting a Cayman S next.
