Hi Roger, Just want to say a huge thank you, because it was this video that made me want to pursue my dream of Porsche Cayman 981 ownership. I found this video last spring while I was doing my homework as to what vehicle to buy upon my upcoming retirement. When it actually came to my retirement date in July 2019 I actually didn’t buy a Cayman 981,as I was scared off by its ownership costs. So I purchased a lesser vehicle new with the thought of practical long term ownership, unfortunately I just could not get the thought out of my head of owning a Porsche Cayman 981. I kept watching this and many video reviews like it and eventually in January of this year I actually bought one!,as I thought you only live once and this would be my last chance to fulfill one of my dreams. It’s not an S but I am besotted with it,I viewed many both manual and PDK and I found due to a leg injury I sustained a few years ago,the PDK gearbox was the obvious choice and I don’t regret it at all. It is a base Cayman in Rhodium silver with GTS rear lights and sits on 20” Carrera wheels and looks stunning. Sorry to ramble on but I will finish by saying, thank you for helping me to realise my dream of Porsche ownership. Stay safe and all the very best. Phil
Great Video Roger....Thanks. One small PDK tip relating to your point 3, if you simply stab the throttle and release, the car will downshift to the optimum gear in readiness to go, it will hold this state for a few seconds waiting for you to nail it, so perfect if you are thinking of going for a pass on a twisty road. If you don’t give it the beans the PDK will return to the higher gear and settle down again.
Good heavens Roger Bailey Stephen Spielberg’s got nothing on you. absolutely Brilliant. The camerawork, presentation, description, passion, knowledge of the product, awesome(not biased) totally agree 981 six cylinder dream machine. Respect from Chips
Currently driving a '16 370z, fun car. But was tossed up with the previous model porsche cayman s. Came from a miata nb. Pretty certain I'm going to upgrade in a cpl of years to this cayman s. Miss the balanced handling of the miata, but would like that with a bit more power than my 370 puts down. Sexy ass cayman.
@@spencer963 I traded my 981 for a 718 last November...it is such a freakin awesome car. It gets a lot of hate from the the sound of the 4 cylinder, but otherwise it's such a far superior car to the 981 in every other way.
Roger, the "noise" you speak of is pure music to me when I run my 2016 981 S through the six manual gears I chose. I agree with you on every other point. Every drive is a thrill. Great video!
@Bruno Desrosiers the 1st point is for concealed advertising only, because I am not buying that terrible noise anecdote... how is it not illegal to wear noise cancelling headphones?! You must be able to hear the traffic.
Great video. I'm a proud owner of a 981 S and I agree this is the best car in its class and for the money. By the way Porsche does include a tire inflation device in all Porsches. I saw it by the battery in your video.
Whoo, I saw your video of the Skoda Kodiaq and I was already impressed of your video editing skills. But this video is even much better. Funny, curious and professional again. Thumb up for me!
Roger you are a master!!! This was brilliant enjoyed every second of it and could clearly see that that this must have been one of your favourites. Good job mate
Your make a bloody good salesman mate , I enjoyed how much you like this car , and may have even convinced me to buy one too next year I've been thinking about it for a while
LOVE cars! Oh heck..I LOVE to drive, ride, Captain (cars, motorcycles and boats..licensed for all.) I wish ALL cars came in manual trans! Sooo much more control! Found you on JAMES LIVE #Iamacreator Supported and Thumbs up!
I,ve been kicking around the idea of getting one of these cars. It seems like the perfect sports car to own with perfect power to weight ratio!🏆🏁 Thanks for sharing the seven important facts. I might actually pick up a pair of headphones to avoid more tinnitus.😊
Nice video, there is a tyre inflater standard in a every porsche. In the 981 it is in the front close to youre battery. There is a little box with a tyre picture on it. That is where the tyre inflater is stored
Nice shoot. You really put the time in on this cut. I aspire to 'go drone' soon myself and this video really moved that to the fore. You make me miss my 981-GTS. I'll take solace in my 'new to me' 987.2 Spyder. Thanks for the effort.
Roger Bailey Oh, yes, it's a keeper! Couldn't bring myself to take the 981 to the track. Went down a few thousand and now I'm after it on the auto-x circuits!
981 Boxster S and you get best of both worlds plus 918 styling. One the best cars Porsche have ever made and also it saved them from bankruptcy in the 90’s 😁
Porsche Cayman 987 and 981 are the best Porsche’s you can own now and the Ur - Cayman the 987 was the best classic design Porsche has made in the last 2 decades 😊
Glad I see this, I experienced point 2 shortly after I bought a used 13 Boxster, fortunately it’s normal. But somehow this doesn’t happen on my brand new winter tire and rims
Roger Bailey yes, looked into that. checked the picture of 981's front suspension, their race car like Ackerman geometry design doesn’t compensate low speed tight turns.
Roger Bailey Sure is Roger, I have a basically free Porsche to drive when ever I like 😜 Your vid is so spot on, I can tell you love your car and I know perfectly well why you do 👍 I have started to spend a bit of money on maintenance now but it’s done 112,000 miles so would on any car by now, BMW, Mercedes and all but they would still be depreciating and my car has stopped now and will actually start to go up in a few yrs time I’m glad you told me about the tight turning thing, I was wondering what that feeling was Great vid mate 👍
Best version of the Cayman. Only thing I dislike is the headlamps. Preferred the diagonal stacked lights from previous model which are similar to Gt car.
I agree with all but Point 4...they come with their own tire inflation system. Its in trunk up front. Maybe that's just for US models? I love my 981 S.
I sure hope it sounds better than that in person. reminds me of baseball cards in my bike spokes. I was ready to compare it to a 917 but then I changed my mind. By the way, do you realize that you were driving on the Wrong side of the road?
Is your Sports Exhaust an option? If so, one way to avoid Point 1 is not to have one fitted. Great car. Well filmed, edited & presented. Most enjoyable review!
You had me until you got the PDK. I would have to get the manual gearbox with this car. Going to these Auto with paddles is breaking my heart overall with the car companies. Gotta have the 6MT gearbox.
1. Topgear didn't ask you yet to join them? :) Great video! 2.I have a mavic too, in auto mode is a little bit overexposed all the time. 3. I always like the manual cars.Don't you think for ultimate driving experience the manual with the clutch is better?
TRAVEL ADDICT 18 thanks for this, I've had no top gear request as yet :-) I'm still new to mavic settings but will try adjusting exposure and yes I love manual cars as well as these modern semi autos, PDK just about gets my vote having tried both
Make sure you have a diagnostic interface, you’ll need it, only ever had an engine management light come on on two car, both Porsche’s one only had 5000 miles, lovely looking cars but quality is questionable
What extra features would the GTS version add to this car? Are these worth the extra price? When you use it as a daily drivers car as well as to have some fun in the weekends.
Great info and well presented again. Roger would you buy from Porsche Centre or go private ? Any chance of a video on Porsche direct versus buying private? ( Or did I miss this? ) 😎
Hi Kevin, thanks, personally I avoid buying private as sellers seem to ask similar amounts as dealers. The Porsche comprehensive warranty inc roadside assistance is the main reason why I'd want to buy a Porsche from an official Porsche Centre, when these cars go wrong it is usually expensive .
You very welcome. Yeah they were a great experience too, i forgot to mention the Boxter, one of the last models, was great too, so is 4 counting with that one. It was a trade car of a guy that bought a new Range Rover , the Porsche was practically new with 2k on the clock, such a waste of money buying an expensive car and after swap for a different one few months later lol... At least i did enjoyed the car for that day and took it home :).
Excellent video and lovely car (although better in blue😉). Really well done on producing the video, is it a hobby or are you a professional? Also looks like you may be fairly local to me with the shots of Liverpool (hence the blue comment). I’m in Southport👍
I'm sure there isn't such a thing as a poor Cayman, I own and drive a manual 987 S and it's the best car I've ever had. I'll go even further and say I know I'm at the pinnacle of my car ownership experience and if there's ever the possibility of me selling it I won't get anything better, except as you point out a newer Cayman with maybe the PDK box. Oh,...and a nice little review by the way. 👍😎
Love the camera angles and the editing. Wish i would see more comments about the actual car but oh well. Debating between the 981 Cayman S and the 718 Cayman. I prefer to have lower torque versus engine note so the 718 Cayman should be the obvious choice but just wondering what your guys’ thoughts are? Just curious.
I have just purchased a 981 Cayman base model but it has the Cayman S exhaust as an option from new. Its sounds equally as good as this Cayman S with crackles on overrun. Top end power is excellent and very responsive once you hold revs bit different to turbo model 718 Cayman but yes would rather have the good sound.
Roger Bailey Wow, as im watching this video 4 months later and im scrolling through the comments i see my comment and Roger Bailey actually responded, so cool. Anyways, i am glad to say i am about a month away from making my purchase and it is going to be the 718. I found one at a reasonable price with low mileage! I’ve realized i can sacrifice some of the glorious engine note from the flat 6 and “make due” with the turbo 4 cylinder and have that low end torque for my everyday driving. Also thanks for the input C30motors.
Roger, im looking at buying one of these probably at the13-14 plate, but I've also wondered apart from having the slightly dated interior is there much downside to purchasing an older model at around 09-10? it seems you can shave off a good 4-6k just going a few years backward, thanks
I hear the older 987 model generally reliable, ensure a full service history, known faults are the notorious IMS bearing failure, coil springs, main oil seal failure, there is plenty of information available, personally I'd buy one and use it, - great car.
There's a reason the PDK was developed, not withstanding the ability to use paddle shifters and keep hands on the wheel, it's a step from tiptronic not down, you should have boufgt the sport steering wheel.
Nice piece. I've just bought a 987 Cayman S 2011 which I'm picking up and driving for first time tomorrow. As mid-engined 2-seaters I'm thinking the Lotus models are equivalents - I used to have an Elise 111S. I guess I'll find out tomorrow how close the comparison :)

There's a reason the PDK was developed, not withstanding the ability to use paddle shifters and keep hands on the wheel, it's a step from tiptronic not down, you should have boufgt the sport steering wheel.
Very well done!
cheers
It is a beauty.
It’s a great idea to learn how to drive in this car?
Great video and sound track... and not just the sound of the flat 6 !! Roger what's your thoughts of Cayman S vs Boxster S?
No PDK needs a clutch pedal love the car
Nice piece. I've just bought a 987 Cayman S 2011 which I'm picking up and driving for first time tomorrow. As mid-engined 2-seaters I'm thinking the Lotus models are equivalents - I used to have an Elise 111S. I guess I'll find out tomorrow how close the comparison :)
let us know
Great video. I drive a Boxster S here in NZ, but nice to see my home town there. Cheers!
envious of those roads in NZ :)
Isn't point 2 in fact related to all cars???
Your video is the best video on the tube. Faaaaaaantastic.....!!!!!!!!!!
John Kroll thanks !!!!!
Got myself one of these bad boys 2014 Model Flat 6 3.4L version. Honestly, the most fun and best car I've ever driven!
