    As a teenager in the mid 70s I remember reading a review of the then new 930 turbo, the content and photos of which sparked a life-long desire to own a Porsche. In the mid 80s a Porsche franchise opened in the village where I lived, and with a lot of luck, I started delivering and collecting its customers' cars at weekends - 944s, 911s, 928s, and an exquisite orange 912, which was for sale at £10,000 - hindsight!. My Porsche driving days ended all to soon when I moved on in my full-time job, returning my Porsche experiences to magazines and tv car shows. But my desire to own didn’t diminish, and on my recent retirement I finally got my own set of keys, to a manual Cayman 987.2, something very similar in size and pace to the early 911s, delivering an intoxicating surge of induction and pace as the flat 6 races to the red line. The cost of the air-cooled cars may have escaped me, but the best Porsche is the one you can afford - and that’s my Cayman!

      Gagan Gill i kinda realized this with a cayman in, hmm, might have been 2012-13 or so. Lost track of bmw after e92 and 1m, im sure m2 is good but 1) bmw has nothing to compete with current new p cars, and there are no real successors to e30, e36, and 2) there are such good options for used porsches, like older caymans/gt4 and996/997 c2 and turbo. GT3/2/rs i always thought were beyond bmw, you dont crosshop those and m cars really. Porsche still makes some somewhat lightweight track focused cars, bmw were still in that game up until e46 (csl) platform. Now i dont see how they differ from mercedes and audi really (and lets not get into how those brands stepped up in racing and with the r8 and gtr models).

    Having driven all 3 I totally agree with all of your comments. It is worth knowing that you can significantly improve the feel of the 981 by fitting the 718 rear ARB and brace as well as dialling in more neg camber. This is about all that Porsche changed and the improvement is drastic.

    • @TheTravisTube
      @TheTravisTube 3 года назад

      Very interesting! As the owner of a 981s with x73 suspension, I have always wondered how much of the handling improvement granted to the 718 actually comes down to the suspension versus subtle changes in electronic steering. PASM is the sportiest option in the 718, but it gets major kudos and I've no doubt that it is good. Another tiny detail to keep in mind is that the steering wheel of the 718 actually has a smaller radius (I know this for sure because I recently swapped out my OEM multifunction wheel for a 718 wheel lol). I really need to drive the 718 (preferably on track), because now I'm curious about the overall differences in the way the two cars are set up.

      718 gts 4.0...

    • @ZDY66666
      @ZDY66666 4 года назад +6

      Nate Crabtree nope, I disagree and here’s the technicals to why:
      718 GTS 4.0 sounds worse than 981 GTS (especially with the particulate filter). Near non-existent noise below 4000 rpm but due to sharing the same horrible gear ratios as the 981 (also 981's big flaw too imo), except with even more horsepower. Slow gearing with even more horsepower means that to hear that engine you’re in 100% jail speeds. Whereas the 981 makes nice sound anywhere past 2000 rpm and even 2000rpm makes a grumbly sound (but arguably a drone sound, still better than nothing). While its still got horrible gearing, at least you still get to hear something. And since it has less horsepower, you can actually ride the horrid gears and end up in less speed than hte 718 4.0 GTS. Espeically when the day comes where none of these cars are competitive at 0-60, this will matter even more.
      Secondly, 718 GTS 4.0 is built on an engine complying with newer emission standards and laws. It also has much less induction noise as well.
      Thirdly, 718 GTS 4.0 price point is much higher. As high if not more than 981 GT4 if we were to travel back in time. And I am referring to average samples around the market,not starting price (which is a horrible indication for porsches).
      Also I’m assuming everyone already knows this. The GTS “4.0” ‘s 4.0 engine is not the GT3 4.0 engine. It’s a much cheaper to produce engine based on the twin turbo flat 6 used in 991.2 and 992.1 911s. But stripped its turbos and bored and stroked up to 4.0. Which is why it sounds so bland.

    • @bunsenn5064
      @bunsenn5064 3 года назад

      @@ZDY66666 So it’s the sound? That’s it? Like, when people complain about turbocharging these days, I can usually understand that being due to the performance difference and the way the car delivers power. The sound is probably one of the last things that matters. The emotion and driving experience of an engine is about the way the engine performs and feels. And frankly, the sound isn’t really a turn-off for me. A naturally aspirated flat-six on its own is enough for me.

    I remember watching your black Cayman review before buying my first Cayman. Now I'm on the 987.2S in manual, and everything spoken in this review is right. You feel the steering wheel column connected to the wheels through your hands, the 987 hydraulic rack gives you a ton of feedback, especially when it gets serious with the front wheels, it will brake your hands if you have the wrong accident. That's where the magic with the Cayman happens, because the car sits on the road in a very refined way. It has enough mass to feel respectable and safe. Then you step on it and in the curve the car feels responsive, lively, short - like a backpack. This wheelbase, the proportion and the simple suspension setup, not too wide 265 tires, all make it just the right experience, it's quite astounding because when you understand it you see how this is the perfect formula for a drivers car. Damping in my S is just right for me to daily it with pleasure. And then with a blip of the gas pedal you have a motorbike like experience. It's not only the power, it's the sound, the way the suspension flexes, the vibration. It's one of the true great sports cars of all time.

    I’ve been lucky enough to own all 3 Cayman generations. My latest 718 is the best of the bunch out of all 3. Why? Because, in my opinion, the 718 has better handling, better acceleration, better tech & the best interior of all 3. I’m impressed whenever I’m behind the wheel & look forward to the next Cayman generation.

      I'm very seriously considering the 718 300HP 2.0L but thinking that I might miss out a whole lot from the 981 flat 6 341hp.
      Both PDK. I live in a rather small city with fair amount of country roads
      Hope you can sway me to the 718 and not much im missing fr d inline 6 and the sound. But I can be seduced by the inline 6 and the sound.

The smaller size, hydraulic steering and lines of the 987 are big selling points over the newer ones.

    Great comparison. I've driven all extensively, and found the 987 is by far the most communicative and the best choice for a weekend car. Extra refinement of the 981 worth considering for a daily or for long distances. I can't imagine paying more for a 718 and losing that beautiful sound.
    My solution was to take the 981 budget (~$35k) and buy a 987 for weekends + and a Golf GTI for practical stuff/long distance. The greatest weekend fun in the Cayman + serious 4-seat practicality (and still a chunk of fun!) the rest of the time. Regularly driving two very different types of car is enjoyable too.
    Don't think there's any going back to the feel of the 987, so sadly think this is the last Porsche I'll own. I love it.

      My thought exactly... Porsches numbering scheme and the fact that all three generations look so similar made it tough to tell which generation you were in each time you jumped to the next car. I need to watch it again and pay more attention to the details!
